2011 Mazda CX9 SUV (879)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2011 Mazda CX9 – which was a Rental from Enterprise while on Vacation in Sandpoint, Idaho, USA. Not a press car but this is a great way to see a new car that has been abused by renters… know what I mean?!

Anyway it was a good experience and the car was holding up well against the abuse. I have tested the CX9 in the past so I had some reference point from a new vehicle driven very little, from the factory. Kudo’s to Mazda. Everything worked and it was still Zoom, Zoom, Zooming…

General Info:

55% of Parts are from the US and Canadian; 35% come from Japan including the Engine & Transmission. It is assembled in Flat Rock, Michigan, USA. Class is Midsize. Cars from Mazda – CX-7, CX-9, Mazda 2,3,5 & 6, MAZDASPEED3, MX-5 Miata, RX-8, Tribute, Tribute Hybrid & Truck..

Handling & Performance:

I took it off road and never had a problem with this FWD (Front Wheel Drive) version. In most cases you won’t ever need 4-wheel drive anyway although I would have preferred it in the places I was taking this SUV.

Styling:

I like it, even if it is a typical look of most of today’s SUVs that obviously appeal to a lot of people. Most all brands have adopted a similar look because that is what consumers want from an SUV.

Fit and Finish:

Very good.

Cost:

$29-34,000 is an expected price range for this class SUV and acceptable.

Conveniences and comfort:

As a rental car it was pretty basic. I like navigation, but I still recommend getting an add-on product like Tom-Tom or Garmin, to save money. This rental did not have Nav so I just used my phone Navigation application – VZ Navigator. . . still cheaper than a factory option. I’m sure manufacturers will give up eventually because the option is still way more expensive than I can justify. They can’t compete with portable units now but as the const continues downward they may be able to make it a standard feature in time.

2011 Audi A7 3.0 TFSI Quattro Auto Tiptronic Sedan (878)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2012 Audi A7 3.0 TFSI Quattro Auto Tiptronic Sedan. This is a really impressive luxury car and a glimpse into the future.

Brother John and I weren’t terribly impressed with early Audi’s at our Foreign Car Repair shop, but we appreciated brands like BMW, Audi and Jaguar for revenue. A Ferrari now and again helped too. Thanks.

There is no evidence that is the case today. Technology has allowed 100,000 miles between tune ups and electrical has replaced mechanical systems. Such as electronic ignition replacing distributors and fuel injection in place of less efficient carburetors.

One could argue the complexity and addition of so many more systems and features offset other improvements. But all things considered it is clear that cars today are far more reliable.

Parts from the US and Canada are 1%, Germany 75%; Engine – Hungary Transmission – Germany. It is assembled in Neckarsulm, Germany, Classification is Mid-size. Cars from Audi: – A3, A4, A4 Avant, A5, A6, A6 Avant, A7, A8, Q5, Q7, R8, S4, S5, S6 & TT.

Handling & Performance:

Outstanding, fast and super easy handling. Even the fuel economy is decent for this class of turbocharged cars.

Styling:

Beautiful look and elegant inside.

Fit and Finish:

Excellent.

Cost:

Pricey, but it is a special car worth the price of admission.

Conveniences and comfort:

Wow. The 21^st century is upon us and we’re beginning to see some pretty amazing additions to our cars. Consider that when you go to the Airport, The Coffee Bean, the Library or most anywhere you can usually get WiFi. Well, you guessed it, now you can have WiFi in your Audi A7. Yep, very cool. Turn on the power and connect your cell phone and computer to the internet. And because it uses your phones contacts you select them right there on the color screen that appears out of the dash and tucks away neatly when not in use.

So I get in the A7 and my iPhone and iPad connect automatically to the cars technology systems. I let my hand fall to the control and with a glance I push the button, select the person I want to call, or Navigate to. Voice, Nav commands or music from my Cell hands free through the speakers, loud and clear. I would have to pull over to use my iPad or computer but if I have a passenger, they can find restaraunts and make reservations, get directions and literally anything they can do from the office or home. Print to a home or office printer. Incredible and we know it will only get better over time.

Another fabulous feature is the addition of Google Earth Navigation that takes Nav to the next level. You can see it coming, can’t you? With such accurate devices like GPS coupled with Smart Cruise, lane change warnings, it won’t be long until you can add “Hands Free Driving” to the ease of transportation. Set it, take your hands off the steering wheel and leave the driving to Hal – of 2001 – a Space Odyssey fame. Then if some fool cuts you off, the car will reduce speed or jam on the brakes to avoid accidents. Computer sensors have faster reaction time than any human driver plus it doesn’t get distracted by anything.

Ok, so it isn’t here today, but you know it can’t be far off. Most component features exist now that even monitor your eyes and wake you up if you start drifting off into never-never land.

An in-law has a neighbor who works for Apple and the word is “you wouldn’t believe what is coming down the pike.” Yes I would believe it, Charlie. Wouldn’t you love to be a fly on the wall of some of today’s high tech companies.

A big thanks to the Space Program, NASA and all our tax payers who made it possible. Thanks to Jack Kennedy for the leadership and inspiration to put a man on the moon. JFK was a student of the London School of Economics and believed in the free market system, unlike too many who believe in Keynsian Economics. Keynes and Karl Marx were joined at the hip, philosophically and by now have been proven wrong. A final thanks to, arguably, our greatest president of the 20^th Century, Ronald Reagan who’s leadership grew our economy while convincing the world of Socialists & Communists to give up a failed social and economic experiment that lasted from 1917 to 1989.

So, thanks again JFK, Ronald Reagan and a country of ‘Free Market’ entrepreneurial capitalists who work wonders of hope based on Adam Smith’s invisible hand.

If this is in your price range you won’t want to miss test driving this A7.

2011 Chrysler 200 Limited Convertible (876)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2011 Chrysler 200 Limited Convertible. I don’t know about the Limited thing, because it seems complete to me and more than adequate for what it is. I’m sure it isn’t all things to all people, but it is what it is and an especially impressive true hard-top and convertible all at the same time. It is a Transformer and morphs before your very eyes and is a marvel of technology, says engineer Merkel. Yes, you can say that about other manufacturers retractable hard tops but they do it more expensively. Consider this list: Mercedes-Benz SL Class at over $100,000; Lexus SC 430 about $70,000; Cadillac XLR over $90,000; Mercedes Benz SLK Class at about $50,000; Lexus IS 250C at about $40,000; Infiniti G37 around $45,000; BMW 3-Series from $45,000; Mazda MX-5, VW Eos and Volvo C70 have HT Convertibles at or near the pricing of the Chrysler 200.

On top of that the value of features is quite good, like Smart Cruise control, Blind spot sensor system and Hill start assist. These are favorites of mine so I give the 200 high marks for being as smart as me. All kidding aside, when you go from car to car each week as I do and now numbering 877 you learn to appreciate cars that are smartly and wonderfully made.

Opinion:

Long ago and seemingly in another life, I was driving in my 1988 Olds hard top convertible down the freeway to the North Island Naval Air Station, San Diego, and not paying a lot of attention to speed when a CHP black and white pulled along side. I looked over and he motioned with his hand up and down to tell me to slow down. A glance at my speedometer and a simple nod of my head acknowledging my agreement with his assessment, and of course I slowed down as he pulled away.

I recall that scene on occasion when I find I’m going a little too fast. Sadly those days are gone along with a simpler life and arguably better people. Those were days when you rarely locked the doors on your house or car for that matter. Truly they were kinder and gentler days. The slogan on police cruisers “to protect and serve” is just that, a slogan. They didn’t need no stinking slogan back then, because we all knew who they were, and if they called you on something they were usually right. That doesn’t apply in Today’s world. I saluted that officer 53 years ago as I do these days. Unfortunately today’s police are more tax collector than servant. Why, because an out of control government is hungry for the dough to support their ‘Culture of Corruption’. Of course in the military it was a full hand salute to show respect, where today it is a few fingers shy of real respect. Oh if we could only return to those days. . . dream on, Joe, dream on.

Handling & Performance:

Smooth, really smooth. I guess all the weight from the retractable hard top mechanism adds to the solid feel and stance. A powerful V6 gives it all the power you’ll likely need, it handles well and is simply an enjoyable ride.

Styling:

Picture worth 1,000 words to show nice clean lines that makes it easy on the eyes. Inside you’re drawn to white piping accenting black leather seats that is a ‘touch of class’. Good job and kudos to the designers.

Fit and Finish:

Quite good. Like so many these days plastic detracts a bit, but in class it is typical and not a real negative. Could be better, but no complaint.

Cost:

All things considered I’m happy with the price to value of this car. Without the retractable hard top the price is very much the same as other competition in class listed here, who don’t even offer a convertible that I could find.

Conveniences and comfort:

A good mix of features for the price noted that includes navigation and a Boston sound system. I particularly appreciate the newest of features today, and that I find most useful, like Smart Cruise control and Blind Spot sensing system.

2011 Dodge Durango Crew RWD Crewlux (875)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2011 Dodge Durango Crewlux SUV. Son Mike could use this 8 passenger van. Mike is on his way to filling every seat. Number 5 is on the way and I’m sure Utah’s finest are thrilled. It’s what they do in old country, USA. Congratulations. Once the 7^tharrives Mike may need to move up to a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter that seats 12. The bad news is that a Sprinter with seats will cost $45,000 so he may need a second job or a couple more wives to pay for it. We won’t follow the logic on that.

General Info:

Parts: US/Canadian – 69% including the Engine & Transmission. It is assembled in Detroit, Michigan, USA. Class is SUV. Cars from Dodge include: Avenger, Caliber, Challenger, Charger, Durango, Grand Caravan, Journey, Nitro & Viper.

Opinion:

…And speaking of my son’s growing family (In Utah), at first blush it seems out of touch with the “New World Order (Society)” of hope and change. In a society that demands politically correct and to do as the government dictates, this large vehicle is violating those dictates, some would say. Hogwash, say I. As long as we remain free it is our duty to do as Nature Dictates and not as high fashion Culture Coordinating Government says, as it meddles in the affairs of Mother Nature.

For you greenies and tree huggers who still have Al Gore bumper stickers, the large vehicles son Mike uses for his family makes the most sense, (assuming large families make sense to begin with).The brand and model is supported by those who can do simple math and know instinctively that hauling around a lot of folks means doing it in one vehicle, not two or more.

Mao Tse Tung would roll over in his grave and say he dictated “Only One Child” per family. Well for Mao that was a necessity since they didn’t have cars in China, let alone SUV’s that seat 8 people. Seriously though, at well over a billion people in China, it was necessary to do something! But once again, fooling with Mother Nature was poorly thought out. The culture in China discarded the girls so there is an imbalance and too many males. Now they have too many men and not enough women. Who’d a thunk! Obviously Mao did not, or didn’t think it a bad thing.

Handling & Performance:

Wonderful, large SUV. Large means convenience for the higher fuel consumption. But that is where it is interesting since the MPG of this Durango is exactly the same last week’s Mercedes-Benz E550 sport coupe. That Benz is lucky to seat 4. Have I made my case Obama?

Styling:

Nice appearance even if it resembles an FBI or other Government security vehicle used for diplomats and politicians and other better people than we – the real people.

Fit and Finish:

Very good.

Cost:

Good price to benefit ratio if you need a high capacity passenger vehicle, but if you intend to use it as a commuter it is expensive.

Conveniences and comfort:

For the money there is a huge list of standard features that are really nice. There are a couple of high tech options I would add and suggest you consider them as well for $1,195 – “Adaptive Cruise Control/ forward collision warning and “Blind Spot and Rear Cross Path Detection”. These are extremely helpful and the best of recent improvements to available features.

2011 Mercedes-Benz E550 Coupe (874)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2011 Mercedes-Benz E550 Coupe. Beautiful only begins to express my feeling about this car. This one is easy to fall in love with. I’ve owned a couple of top of the line Mercedes cars over the years and so when I drove this E550-C it brought back fond memories. They are truly special automobiles. I tested an E320 Wagon throughout Germany and northern Italy, Austria and Switzerland. They are always a joy to drive.

This very sporty 2 plus two smaller folks in the back coupe is to me perfect for a young exec on the prowl. It is very exciting and faster than snot on a hot day. And yes the test car was red. Beautiful and a target for added taxes on the rich.

E Class originated from Einspritzmotor or fuel injected engine, if you’re interested.

General Info:

Parts are from Germany and it is assembled in Germany. Class is Sub Compact. Cars from Mercedes – C-Class, CL, CLS, E-Class, E-Wagon, G-Class, GL, GLK, M-Class, M-Hybrid, R-Class, S-Class, S-Hybrid, SL-Class, SLK, SLS & Sprinter.

Opinion:

This is a follow up to the State’s rebuttal of my comments about Government addiction to oil.

I am amazed at how out of touch they are with the general public. They are off in their own little world of ‘make believe’. Make believe everything is ok and make believe they are needed. Clearly they are not. The song “I get along without you very well” pops into my mind and I think of simpler days when people made things happen and the Government pretty much stayed the hell out of the way. The pioneer spirit was alive and well before the Nanny State morphed into this monster of stupid government bureaucrats who think they really matter. They do however, in that they contribute nothing and the MATTERS. It matters to our society because government is a huge burden we can ill afford. It’s a social machine gone amuck.

So to Ms. Kathleen M’s query that if $.07 per gallon goes to oil company profit and $.55 goes to Government taxes then where does the rest of the price of a gallon of gas go?

Well, to begin with I think the profit is approximately 7% to the Oil Companies, and the tax in California is $.66 / gallon not $.55. Be that as it may Ms. M., the difference is called “Cost of Sales”. The price of a barrel of oil, refinery costs, advertising, rent, and most importantly Salaries and Wages among other expenses like ‘taxes! All of that cost is what fuels our economy, and by the way, the taxes, included in those expenses, is what makes government jobs possible to begin with.

Recommended reading:

Michelle Malkin’s “Culture of Corruption”, and another book I found illuminating is Catherine Drinker Bowen’s “Miracle at Philadelphia”, the story of the Constitutional Convention, May to September 1787. Wouldn’t it be great if our schools would resume teaching Economics in school, and while they’re at it how about Reading, Writing and Arithmetic.

Handling & Performance:

This E550 will get your heart pumping. 0-60 mph in a heart trobbing 5.0 seconds – Wow! Top speed 130 mph (Electronically limited). I wonder if that is the case on the Autobahn’s of Germany. I understand the speed laws are changing there anyway, which is sad, because that was great fun to experience those speeds on a highway.

Styling:

Stunning.

Fit and Finish:

Impressive!

Cost:

$55K base and $65 with the premium package.

Conveniences and comfort:

Sumptuous.

If you can afford the price of admission, this is an E-Ride.

2011 Audi TT TFSI Quattro S-Tronic Coupe (870)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2011 Audi TT 2.0 TFSI Quattro S-Tronic Coupe. The TT is Audi’s sporty two-door, four-passenger Coupe and Roadster, named for the Tourist Trophy, a European motorsports event that was first held in 1905. Both the TT Coupe and the TT Roadster were redesigned for the first time for 2008 and incorporate the third-generation Audi Space Frame (ASF) technology that combines aluminum and steel in the chassis to reduce weight and improve weight distribution. The TT Coupe concept was unveiled in 1995 and arrived in production form for 2000 with very few visual changes from the concept. The Roadster was added for 2001.

The 2011 Audi TT receives new bumpers, grille, fog light grille and chrome fog lights. Inside additional aluminum and high-gloss black trim is added for the steering wheel, center console and door panels.

I reviewed the TTS in 2010 and for 2011 it receives fog light grilles with horizontal braces and 19-inch tri-spoke 5-segment wheels.

Handling & Performance:

Awesome performance as usual, and that is where the trouble begins if you don’t exercise self control. It is easy with a turbo to take the exhilaration of rapid acceleration to push the limits – speed limits. And in today’s world that is getting pretty expensive for the “E” ride experience. If you were born after Disneyland changed ticketing for the rides at its park you likely don’t know what the term “E” ride meant. Ask your mom or dad.

Styling:

Oolong Gray metallic paint. If you go to Chinese restaraunts you probably have had Oolong Tea? Good stuff but very expensive tea. This design speaks expensive too. But it is an eye catcher for sure. People always comment it is a “nice car” which translates to mean “well designed” for today’s tastes. I really like the Audi lighting. I’ll bet the guy that designed those got a raise.

Pricey, but it is in the company of very expensive cars so in that sense it is a bargain. It’s all relative I guess, and if it performs, looks and feels as good or close enough then the price is irrelevant. And if you decide on this class car you can probably afford it.

One must consider when buying this car, if the size is right, that the cost of operation in class is usually pricey. Friend Mark when he takes his Porsche to the Porsche – Audi dealer in town it is never cheap. If you can’t pay the price cross this one off the list. Mark can, and when we got back to LAX from a trip to Oregon and sat in the car he was noticeably impressed. He really liked this TT and he can literally buy ‘any’ car made. Glad you liked it Mark, But I have to give it back in a week. Life is simply not fair.

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2011 Korean made Kia Forte SX. Kia says they had the best quarter sales on record. Not surprising to me as this company just gets better every year. If you’re interested in what is new for 2012 you can go to kiamedia.com.

Hard to believe another car year is almost over as we begin to talk about 2012.

The promotion people at Kia remind us that the entire Kia lineup continues to be backed by its 10 year, 100,000 mile warranty. In today’s lousy economy (for way too many) this is good news and welcomed security for a product we just can’t seem to do without … of course unless you live in New York City. I love the subway system there.

Opinion:

Years ago, in the late 1940s, Los Angeles California was manipulated by government and the auto related businesses. They stripped out the public transportation system and tore up all the tracks for the ‘Red Car’ and other rail services in the area. Why? Because the tire manufactures, auto companies, gas & oil business all wanted to push their products and somehow convinced government the rail system was not the best way to move people around. Ironic, today we have begun replacing the rail system… albeit too late for what it could have been. What a shame. And shame on those government officials who allowed it. That’s how the free market system is tampered with to the detriment of the people. It’s not nice to fool with mother nature or the ‘free market capitalist system’. And yes, you guessed it… those officials were paid off to do the ‘wrong thing’. Shame on them.

Handling & Performance:

I prefer the handling of rear wheel drive cars like this Forte. And it doesn’t get much better in the performance area to make it a great commuter or simply a great car for the young family on a budget. With gas hovering around $4 a gallon this 32 highway mpg car is looking pretty good to me.

Paddle shifters come standard and they could save the pot metal or plastic as far as I’m concerned. You may like that feature but especially on this economy car it seems inconsistent.

Styling:

Basic, basic, basic which is a good thing in my opinion… and I didn’t stutter. It is basic as are all the competition listed here. Anything car makers add is just fluff and you must know you pay dearly for fluff and fancy badges to boost your ego. Sad commentary on us as a culture bent on displaying outwardly who has the most money or rather who appears to have the most money and that translates into who is more important or somehow better.

Fit and Finish:

Basically good.

Cost:

Outstanding value. If you want a BMW or other fu-fu badge, that’s a different story. But if you are a self assured person that feels a car is not what makes the person, you will save a really lot of money. I suggest you use the money you save to spend more time with the family. Take them to Europe. Trust me, you really can save that kind of money driving a car like this.

Conveniences and comfort:

Unbelievably good stuff is available for a little more money. I particularly like the push button start keyless device so you can keep it in your pocket or purse. I love it. I like Nav but leave it out and buy a portable brand for about $100. The options above the standard MSRP of $19,000 include leather package for $1,000 a power sunroof for $750 and a Nav system, push button start smart key and climate control for $1,800. The only item I would want to have is the push button start out of all these options.

Consumer Recommendation:

Your budget is vital in a car buying decision. It’s not chump change, but if you’re an average Joe who needs to commute what better way than in a “commuter” car that delivers great mileage out of a conventional power plant. Hybrids are a waste of money when you can get about the same mpg from a car like this Forte or any of the competitors listed here.

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2011 Hyundai Sonata SE 2.0T 4-door sedan. The fuel economy (mpg) numbers are good and without the Turbocharger even better by 2 mpg more on the highway. Personally I prefer having the option to use the rapid acceleration provided by the Turbo when I need it. I’d miss the 2 mpg and especially so when it goes to $5 or $6 per gallon. Thanks Obama, you are a slow learner and when we get rid of you we will likely resume drilling our own oil instead of sending our money over to other countries that do NOT deserve our help. If I thought you could change arrogance like you can change ignorance through teaching I wouldn’t be so concerned about the future. But our current president is simply marching to a different drummer.

Do you ever wonder why private enterprise works so well and government is so inefficient at virtually everything it does, except killing guys like Osama bin Laden clandestinely with highly efficient military men and women?

I traveled all over eastern Europe shortly after the fall of Communism and I observed older folks in the family throughout Poland for example who hated the fall while their kids were loving it as they embraced capitalism and have now turned Poland, the Czech Republic into thriving economies in less than two short decades. The actual turnaround was evident just 5 years after that collapse of a stupid socialistic 40 year experiment was proven terribly wrong.

I am reminded of the drastic differences between Marxist Socialism and having to actually work for what you want or need to accomplish in your life. You know, “From each according to his abilities and to each according to his needs”. Karl Marx was a bloody idiot as are all those today that haven’t lived it or at least studied history enough so they don’t STILL think it is a good idea. Those who voted for Obama’s stated hope and change – translated to mean – let’s try Socialism again because we’re smarter and can make it work. Then we can have equality so we’re all equally poor. Handling & Performance:

Outstanding with turbo power that is the future for gas or diesel powered engines. And the engine employs variable valve timing that is usually found only on more expensive cars.

Styling:

Great job on giving the Sonata the look of ‘today’ and not unlike even more expensive top luxury brands. I suspect that is the major reason why there is such a ‘buzz’ in the air from reviewers and car buyers how much they like this Sonata. The cars rep is growing in part because it is a South Korean product that is also getting good press.

Fit and Finish:

Very good, especially for the money, this is a well put together car.

Cost:

You’ll hear a lot about the real value of the Korean made cars and it is all true. Much like the early days of Japanese products the price was destined to go up quickly. If you’re in the market this is the perfect time to take advantage of the new kid on the block.

Conveniences and comfort:

Hyundai delivers a lot for the money which is the consensus of review columnists I talk with. I can’t say enough about the keyless start system. You literally do not have to take the key fob out of your pocket or purse.

Consumer Recommendation:

There are so many nice cars in this class to choose from and that gives you even more bargaining power considering a lousy economy if, of course, you are among the lucky ones with a job.

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4WD Crew Cab 2HY Hybrid. I own a 1985 Silverado and got to wondering how this new Silverado will look in the year 2037. Will it hold up as well, better or the same as my 1985?

As to this new 2011 Silverado, the first thing you notice after you close the door is how quiet it is and the seats are like easy chairs at home. Then as I drive down the highway, I notice how solid it feels. It is light years better than the 1985 I have. I also think of my 1955 Ford Pickup and back then we were happy to sit on a milk crate as seating, so it was a luxury having a bench seat with coil springs. Literally you look under the seat which is hollow and you could see the coil springs holding up the seat covering and providing some seat cushion. That was real luxury. Those were also the days when Crank up windows were the norm and there was also a hole in the grill where you inserted the ‘Hand Crank’ to start the engine when the starter failed. Even further back to the Pre-electric Starter days, which WAS before my time, was when dad had to start his cars with a hand crank. Ringing any bells?

I’m sure any of you who remember “Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride” and other “E” Ticket rides at Disneyland will relate to my comment above.

OK, so what’s your take on the diamond lane ‘off hours’ times? You know, that’s when it is posted that it is a diamond lane between the hours of 5AM to 9AM. In other words it functions as a HOV lane during heavy traffic hours. Does that mean outside of heavy traffic hours the double yellow lines can be ignored? If it is not a diamond lane then entry and exit should be allowed with a simple turn signal anywhere along the road. That is what is happening currently by many but that is because they obviously possess ‘common sense’.

In Northern California as an example there ARE no double lines of any color separating diamond lane from others. Off heavy commuting hours you can use (enter and exit at will) any time any where. Now that is smart and something we apparently can’t expect from CALTRANS. I call that brain dead.

· Another thing that chaps my hide is the messages on signs on the highway. Not that they are there, but rather how some moron says, such as, “Slow down or move over for workers, IT’S THE LAW?” Well screw those arrogant bastards. Who the hell do they think they are? Who hired these idiots? Where did they learn to communicate? . . . Oh excuse me. Right – Public Schools! That’s where students are dumbed down and learn very little. Civil people would write it something like “Please watch for your road workers and slow down in construction zones. Safety First. Thanks”.

Handling & Performance:

Fast was a real surprise, especially since it is a Hybrid. Kinda cool that you can creep along in slow traffic without the engine even engaging. That is a great capability for driving in LA traffic where freeways resemble parking lots more than highways.

Styling:

It’s a truck. No doubt about it. Hard to conceal that fact.

Fit and Finish:

Excellent.

Cost:

More pricey than I expected, but the price includes features that are all standard and including in the pricing.

Conveniences and comfort:

You get a lot and it’s all standard but it will cost you. They just save you the trouble of choosing options packages. Personally I prefer having the choice, plus it gives you the opportunity to bargain with the salespeople.

2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe (863)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 R-Spec M/T. This car is in fantastic company to compete with, and they are mostly more expensive. The Coupe was a 2010 finalist for Motor Trends ‘car of the year’ and it is the most sporty of Hyundai’s offerings to date. Although it is pitted against muscle cars like the Camaro, Mustang and Challenger I see it more comparable to Infiniti G Coupe, Mitsubishi Eclipse and Mazda RX-8.
I did experience an electrical anomaly that was unsettling. While driving it dropped to a maximum of 2,000 rpm and wouldn’t run over 20 mph. Odd but after shutting down and restarting it was back to normal. It didn’t repeat the problem and appeared to be an electrical glitch that I reported to the company. I experienced the same problem with a BMW with the same result. It either has something to do with the ‘drive by wire’ accelerator or in the computer somewhere. I will let you know as soon as I get an answer. I never did get a reply from BMW.

Opinion:

Wow! The Gestapo is at it again. In the Midwest they are downloading your cell phone data onto police computers without probable cause. This isn’t a suggestion, they are actually doing it. The direction is scary that law enforcement would go along with obvious intrusion on our right to privacy. It is the 4th amendment that guards against unreasonable searches and seizures and the government is testing us to see what they can get away with.
Benjamin Franklin is quoted as saying, “those who would give up liberty for security deserve neither”. How insightful.
Speak out against such abuse of power that corrupts before it is ‘absolute power’ that corrupts absolutely. Of course you can’t be stopped if you are an illegal alien without probable cause but you can be stopped while driving and demand you turn over your personal information that is kept on your cell phone. That data includes all your personal mail, texting messages and GPS co-ordinates for the past year so your every move is recorded. Wow!

Handling & Performance:

The Coupe is fast and a fun driving experience which comes standard.

Styling:

The Coupe is a sleek and a pretty looking sport car. The RED paint on the one I tested makes it a magnet to attract the ticket writers.

Fit and Finish:

Good, but I did report to the company there was an annoying squeak I couldn’t find, which was reminiscent of the “Good old days” when cars always creaked and groaned as normal and expected. I’m sure it is a glitch that is unusual in today’s world of cars because engineering is generally bullet proof these days. The Coupe was introduced in 2010 so only a couple of years old and you can be sure they will search out the reason and fix it by the time you buy one.

Cost:

Very cost competitive in class. It will take off if the obvious popularity from my week of driving it is any indication. Then the price will go up as the performance is experienced for those who opt for a sport car that is so wisely priced.

Conveniences and comfort:

The rear seat is only good for very little people that is consistent with all sub compact sport car coupes. For the driver and passenger in front it is quite comfortable. The model I tested did not have cruise control which really was a surprise and I would not buy a car without it because I do a lot of road travel where I find it a necessity.

Consumer Recommendation:

If you are in the market for a sporty car this is a must test drive.
