2008 Nissan Titan 4X4 PRO-4X (689)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2008 Nissan Titan 4X4 PRO-4X full size pick up truck with crew cab. I have been testing a lot of Nissan’s lately and what I come away with is I am impressed with them all.  This full size pick up truck was first introduced in 2004 and I like this size better than the huge Armada for example.

I gave this a complete test and subjected it to virtually every condition you’re likely to encounter. It performed admirably. 2,000 miles in a big loop from LA, California to Oregon, along the Columbia River Gorge through rain, snow, ice, high winds negotiating dirt roads, white out snow conditions and not once felt I needed chains. I found the ease of use of the 4-wheel drive on the fly selector super convenient and in fact necessary in such conditions that changed by the minute.

General Info:

Parts –  n/a

Assembly – Canton, OH USA

Class:  – Standard Pick Up Trucks

Cars: – 350Z, Altima, Altima Hybird, Armada, Frontier, Maxima, Murano, Pathfinder, Quest, Rogue, Sentra, Titan, Versa & Xterra.

Handling & Performance:

This Titan became my friend and I trusted it completely. It was comfortable for me and my passenger. I did all the testing in one week and although I was tired after the trip I know it would have been more harrowing in a lesser vehicle. We found ourselves complementing the Titan often. It has plenty of power but you’ll pay dearly in fuel. It is really bad but I don’t get too excited because that’s expected today for this kind of performance.

Silent running is very noticeable … and it may be the result of their advertised super silent timing chain.

Styling:

I like it a lot. You?

Fit and Finish:

I like it a lot. You?

Cost:

Pricey… but competitive with those listed here.

Consumer Recommendation:

I was equally impressed with my recent test of the Honda Ridgeline. Be sure to put that in your test drives as well. In fact you should test drive all of the listed competitors since the field is relatively small. I think you’ll agree this is a difficult choice to make. I have driven them all and they are all too close to call. I’ve owned Ford’s, Chevy’s and presently I have a Dodge and they’ve all been great trucks.

Recognized Competition:

Nissan Titan $24-39,000, Dodge RAM 1500 $21-40,000, Ford F150 $18-36,000, GMC Sierra 1500 $18-42,000, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 $18-39,000, Toyota Tundra $22-42,000, Honda Ridgeline $28-35,000.

Good News:

They advertise serious off-road performance and I have to agree, roomy crew cab, powerful engine.

Bad News:

Hugely lousy fuel consumption.

Standard Equipment:

5.6 liter 317 hp V8 engine, 5-speed auto transmission, electronically controlled shift on the fly 4WD system, switch on demand Electronic locking rear differential, Rancho off-road performance shocks, independent double wishbone front suspension, solid rear axle with multi-leaf spring suspension, four-wheel ABS disc brakes, 18 inch alloy wheels, heated power mirrors, fog lights, bed mounted driver side lock box, locking tailgate, cargo bed lamp, easygate dampened tailgate, 8-speaker audio with 6 disc in dash CD player, power rear sliding glass, power windows and door locks, remote keyless entry, cruise control with leather wrapped tilt steering wheel with audio and cruise controls, air conditioning, 60/40 split fold up rear bench seat, auto headlights, advanced airbag system, Latch system child anchors and tethers, tire pressure monitoring system, vehicle security system with vehicle immobilizer.

2008 Nissan Rogue SL 2WD (688)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2008 Nissan Rogue SL 2WD.  And it looks like it should cost a lot more money than it does. Perhaps the pricing was the biggest surprise of all for me. I can’t imagine paying thousands more for its sister the Murano for example.

One has to wonder how cars from the same company can be engineered differently in areas where they should be the same. For example the Quest had a jerky throttle and this Rogue is smooth as silk with a wonderful feel and control. Generally this crossover is more car-like, even though it has a moderately high step up. But it handles well and the 170 hp 4-cylinder engine is well matched to a continuously variable transmission for smooth power delivery.

For me, this Rogue deserves a rating of 9 out of 10 in class.

General Info:

Parts –  n/a

Assembly – Los Angeles, CA USA

Class:  – Special Purpose (SUV)

Cars: – 350Z, Altima, Altima Hybird, Armada, Frontier, Maxima, Murano, Pathfinder, Quest, Rogue, Sentra, Titan, Versa & Xterra.

Observation:

A reminder for those drivers out there who find it difficult to be sensitive to the traffic around them and they select the wrong lane for the speed they are traveling. Consider as you drive down the freeway and you are not passing traffic in the lane to your right, that’s the lane you belong in. And why is it that when you pull up alongside that person who seems to be sleeping they are in fact not sleeping but zoned out as they talk on their cell phone. Keep in mind that will not be legal without a hands free capability in the very near future.

Handling & Performance:

Outstanding handling. I could not imagine how well it handled before I actually tested it on the mountain course over the Crest between the high desert and Los Angeles. It was really exceptional and earns a 10 out of 10 which I believe you would consider to be a fair assessment. You can buy the Rogue with front or all wheel drive. My test vehicle was front drive but if I spent a lot of time in the snow I’d opt for the AWD.

Styling:

It is very much today and mirrors that kind of styling car buyers seem to want at this time. I’m indifferent to its appearance but love how it drives. Kind of like some of the women in my life I should have pursued. Rogue is available in S and SL models. And me, I guess I should have been available in other models too.

Fit and Finish:

Nicely done… 8 out of 10.

Cost:

Outstanding value. SL with all wheel drive is $1,200 more than my test vehicle. The S model is only $19,250 with front wheel drive. The SL has more standard equipment and is offered with options not available for the S. Major SL extras include an $800 moonroof, $1,800 Leather Package that contains a power driver’s seat and heated leather-covered seats.

Consumer Recommendation:

There is no available reliability data on this new entry but it comes from good stock with reliable genes. For the money this is a good value and if in your price range and budget you’ll want to test drive this one.

Recognized Competition:

Nissan Rogue $19-22,000, Saturn Vue $21-29,000, Pontiac Torrent $23-29,000, Mercury Mariner 21-26,000, Ford Escape $19-26,000, Subaru Forester $21-28,000, Jeep Patriot $15-22,000, Mazda CX-7 $24-28,000, Mitsubishi Outlander $20-25,000, Suzuki Grand Vitara $19-25,000, Chevrolet Equinox $23-29,000, Toyota RAV4 $21-27,000, Hyundai Tucson $17-25,000, Honda CR-V $21-28,000, Kia Sportage $16-23,000.

Good News:

Very well priced, great handling, comfortable ride.

Bad News:

Only average fuel economy in class, rear doors are noticeably narrow.

Standard Equipment:

2.5 liter 170 hp four-cylinder engine, continuously variable transmission, four-wheel disc brakes, four-wheel antilock braking system, electronic brake force distribution, front and rear stabilizer bars, independent strut front and MultiLink rear suspension, 17 inch alloy wheels, halogen headlights, manual rear liftgate, rear privacy glass, roof rails, variable intermittent front and rear wipers with washer, six way manual driver seat, 4-way manual front passenger seat, air-conditioning, cruise control with steering wheel mounted controls, tilt steering column, power windows and door locks, remote keyless entry, front seat center console, 4-speaker audio system with AM/FM and CD, front airbag system, supplemental side air bags, roof mounted curtain side supplemental airbags, lower anchors and tethers for children, child safety rear door locks, tire pressure monitoring system, vehicle security system, vehicle dynamic control, traction control, and vehicle immobilizer.

2008 Nissan Quest 3.5 SE (687)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2008 Nissan Quest 3.5 SE minivan. Not the prettiest girl at the prom but I don’t agree with Merkel that she is flat ugly.

I was a little put off by the jerky throttle and by weeks end I got a bit more accustomed to it. I wish they’d have done better with that. In fact don’t understand what manufactures failed to ask the press to drive cars before they are manufactured for sale.

General Info:

Parts –  n/a

Assembly – Canton, OH USA

Class:  – Mini Van

Cars: – 350Z, Altima, Altima Hybird, Armada, Frontier, Maxima, Murano, Pathfinder, Quest, Rogue, Sentra, Titan, Versa & Xterra.

Opinion:

It is my understanding from posted signs that the diamond lane applies at specified times of the day only, on some freeways around the state of California.  For example on California 14 the diamond lane applies 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Therefore, it is logical that drivers may cross over the double yellow line, as they routinely do, to and from that lane when it is no longer a diamond lane. I wonder if those of us who do interpret the intent of the diamond lane are alone in this belief. What’s your opinion?

Handling & Performance:

The Quest handled the Crest (Angeles Crest Highway) in style. It is impressive at only 235 horsepower. Surely it kept up with the craziest of those selecting that mountainous passage from the desert to the Los Angeles basin as a commuter route.

Styling:

As I said above my design engineer friend feels it is “Ugly” and I don’t buy that. A Scion is what I call Ugly.

Fit and Finish:

Very good (8 out of 10).

Cost:

Considering the vast amount of features that are standard the price of admission starts to look pretty reasonable. The options however add over $2,100 so you’ll push this MSRP up to about $36,000.

Conveniences and comfort:

If you go for the options the major cost adjustment is for the entertainment system that is almost a necessity for the family in my opinion.

Recognized Competition:

Nissan Quest $24-34,000, Buick Terraza $27-31,000, Mercury Monterey $28,595, Ford Freestar $20-30,000, Chrysler Town & Country $23-36,000, Dodge Grand Caravan $22-27,000, Chevrolet Uplander $22-29,000, Toyota Sienna $24-38,000, Hyundai Entourage $24-30,000, Honda Odyssey $26-41,000, Kia Sedona $21-26,000.

Good News:

Lots of Standard Stuff, good driving experience, great family vehicle.

Bad News:

Only Fair fuel economy, Consumer Reports says it has reliability problems.

Standard Equipment:

3.5 liter 235 hp V6 engine, 5-speed auto trans, 4-wheel ABS brake assist / brake force distribution braking system, power assisted steering, independent strut front and multi-link rear suspension, front and rear stabilizer bars, 17” alloy wheels, auto halogen headlights with cornering lights, rear bumper step pad, dual power mirrors, dual power sliding doors, power rear liftgate, solar glass, rear privacy glass, variable intermittent wipers, rear window defroster and wiper, roof rack, rear sonar system, fog lights, 8-way power driver and 4-way power heated front passenger seats, leather trimmed interior, leather wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, XM Satellite radio with 10 speaker Bose audio, CD6 with MP3 CD-ROM playback, rear audio controls, audio aux., input jack, dual-zone auto temp control, rear heating & A/C rear controls, cruise control with steering wheel controls, power windows & locks, rear vent windows, remote keyless entry, 2nd & 3rd row reading lights, 10 beverage holders, front row folding center tray, tilt steering column, power adjustable pedals, rear view monitor 7” color screen, Bluetooth hands free phone system, full length overhead console, power moonroof with sky view glass panels, advanced air bag system, front side supplemental air bags, roof mounted curtain side air bags, tire pressure monitoring system, lower anchors and tethers for children and safety locks, engine immobilizer, vehicle security, vehicle dynamic control and traction control.

2008 Nissan Altima Hybrid (686)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2008 Nissan Altima Hybrid. Very nice. And I’m always thrilled when I can travel a long way between gas stops. I love Navigation systems and this one was easy to use. Try using one on a German car like BMW or Mercedes and you’ll know what I mean in contrast to this Nissan version. But Garmin portable Nav systems are even easier.

In the next few weeks I will report on the upscale sister car from Infiniti – the M45 and for a mere $25,000 more you can burn significantly more fuel with 16-21 mpg. I must admit it is sweet.

My son-in-law asked me what was my favorite car of all is. Know what? That is an impossible question to answer because it comes from my place in life. The answer I gave him was: you must first establish where you are. Are you married with children? Do you have an out of doors lifestyle? Will you be towing a boat, horse trailer, motorcycles? Will you need to transport elderly parents or very young children? Once you establish what you’ll be using the vehicle for you can narrow the search way down.

General Info:

Parts – n/a

Assembly – Smyrna, Tenn. – USA.

Class:  – Midsize

Cars: – 350Z, Altima, Altima Hybrid, Armada, Frontier, Maxima, Murano, Pathfinder, Quest, Rogue, Sentra, Titan, Versa & Xterra.

Handling & Performance:

Well, Nissan says it is the First Hybrid that drives like a Nissan. And you know what? I can’t dispute that claim because it is nearly impossible to detect you are driving a Hybrid. But you are and it’s a good thing. It is encouraging to experience fuel economy without sacrificing performance significantly when you get about 33 mpg. Thanks Nissan for allowing me to fuel less frequently.

Styling:

Nice sedan styling that makes it even more likely you’d forget it is a Hybrid, that makes a case for why do Hybrids have to be funny looking. They don’t. Another is the Honda Hybrids that also look just like other Hondas.

Fit and Finish:

Very good. Just what I expected.

Cost:

A lot for the money.

Conveniences and comfort:

Even without the options it is very well equipped. And I don’t think I’d opt for the expense of the upgrades when I could buy a top of the line Nav system like the Garmin for about $700, and the prices are rapidly coming down. $2,000 for a Nav system built in is just more than you need to spend and the Garmin is better than most standard equipment OEM versions, unless you want the rear view camera.

Consumer Recommendation:

There are a ton of standard equipment goodies which are personal choice items. Consider the cost savings of Nav systems noted above which can be purchased as low as $150.

Recognized Competition:

Nissan Altima Hybrid $25,070, Dodge Avenger $19-25,000, Chrysler Sebring  $19-32,000, Pontiac G6 $18-30,000, Saturn Aura $20-25,000, Subaru Legacy $20-34,000, Hyundai Sonata $18-24,000, Volkswagen Passat $24-38,000, Toyota Camry Hybrid $25,200, Mitsubishi Galant $20-27,000, Toyota Prius $21-23,000, Honda Accord $20-31,000, Mazda 6 $19-28,000, Ford Fusion $18-25,000.

Good News:

Wonderful fuel economy, nice ride, responsive power, regular sedan styling and with a 20 gallon tank you conceivably could travel 700 miles on one tank. Safety equipment is all standard.

Bad News:

Sold in only 8 states in the US in ’07, (reportedly California, Vermont, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Maine— so even today you have to question available repair facilities. No mention from Manufacturer so it is a question you will want to ask.

Standard Equipment:

2.5 liter 4 cylinder 158 hp gas engine with net 198 horsepower with hybrid, Electronic variable trans, 4-wheel ABS disc brakes with power assist with Brake force distribution, front & rear stabilizer bars, independent Multi-link rear suspension, dual power mirrors, 16” aluminum alloy wheels, halogen headlights, reclining front bucket seats, intelligent Key with push button ignition, dual zone climate control, power windows and locks, audio system with 6 speakers, cruise control with steering wheel mounted controls, tile and telescopic steering column, speed sensitive variable wipers, dual 12V power outlets, rear center armrest w/ dual cup holders, dual vanity mirrors, airbag system, front side impact air bags, supplemental side curtain air bags, vehicle dynamic control, traction control, child safety rear locks, lower anchor tethers, tire pressure monitoring system, Nissan immobilizer system and vehicle security system.

Options: Technology package including Nav system, XM satellite radio with XM traffic system, rearview monitor, leather appointed seats, heated front seats, 8-way power driver seat with power lumbar  support, rear spoiler, Bluetooth hands free phone system, Bose audio with 6 CD player with 9 speakers, MP3/WMA CD-ROM playback capability, Radio Data System, speed sensitive volume, heated mirrors with turn signals, auto on/off lights, leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, steering wheel mounted audio controls and remote keyless entry – ($6,400)

2008 Dodge Ram 2500 Laramie Quad 4X4 (685)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the very versatile 2008 Dodge Ram 2500 Laramie Quad 4X4. On a ranch trucks like this are commonplace because they are a necessity and not just cool to have. These are workhorses and when you’re hauling horses and hay and all the other stuff you’ll need for the lifestyle even the lousy fuel economy is a secondary consideration.

I asked Glenn how much fuel he burned in his 39 foot motor home from Medford to Los Angeles and the number is staggering at nearly $500 at today’s prices. Or, about 70 cents a mile. But that’s the cost of moving his entire home so fuel consumption is very relative.

You may recall several weeks ago I tested the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 LTZ Crew Cab with a 6.0 liter engine and is direct competition to this Dodge Ram. I found that model to be quieter and smoother in ride and engine vibration.

General Info:

Parts – n/a

Assembly – US & Saltillo, Mexico

Class:  – Special Purpose

Cars: – Avenger, Caliber, Charger, Dakota, Durango, Grand Caravan, Magnum, Nitro, Ram 15, 25 & 3500, Sprinter Van and Wagon.

Handling & Performance:

It doesn’t get much better for pulling a horse trailer and all your tack, feed and kids with their dirt bikes. It pulls all that with ease. But you don’t need the 6.7 liter turbo diesel to do that… it just gives that margin of performance I like to have.

Styling:

The look and feel telegraphs the image of one tough truck. The Japanese are making strides at penetrating this big truck market but there is no doubt it will be an uphill climb. They know how much styling plays a role in what Americans like in their trucks, but 100 years of tradition of devotees to Ford, GM and Chrysler isn’t dead. In fact I believe most will reject the off shore invasion of the Asian car and truck competition and we’ll look to the familiar All American Truck icon that is not American buying them helps your cousin, uncle, brothers and sisters with a stronger economy here at home. Think about that when you consider buying Japanese trucks in today’s world. Style also means preserving our own Lifestyle.

Fit and Finish:

Outstanding – let’s face it, US ingenuity and world leading technology has made American made cars and trucks every bit as good as intense cheaper labor in Asia.

No longer do we have to apologize for our US auto makers.

Cost:

Since I’d have to take out a second on my house to buy most trucks today I’d likely borrow a little extra so I could have the Cummins Turbo Diesel. And the added loan on the mortgage for the second largest of asset acquisitions makes total sense to do just that… unless of course they are giving no interest financing on the truck. The last company purchase we made was a Ford F-350 and that’s exactly what Ford financing did, so you should check that out first.

Conveniences and comfort:

As I mentioned above if you are an out-of-doors family this truck does it all, in style.

Consumer Recommendation:

There are a limited number of players in this class so you will surely want to test them all even if you don’t care for the brand. You may change your mind.

Recognized Competition:

Dodge Ram 2500 $35-39,000,  $27-31,000, Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD $24-40,000, Ford F-250 Super Duty $23-38,000, GMC Sierra 2500 HD $24-40,000.

Good News:

Perfect size, tough, very versatile and lots of torque to tote the entire family and all the gear, in style.

Bad News:

Poor fuel economy in a world of quickly rising gas prices.

Standard Equipment:

5.7 liter 345 hp V8 engine, 6-speed automatic trans, 34 gallon fuel tank, sentry key theft deterrent system, security alarm, power steering, tire pressure monitor/signal, multistage air bags, HD engine cooling, 4-wheel power ABS disc brakes, power adjustable pedals, 600 amp maintenance free battery, air conditioning, tilt column, leather wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, cruise control, rear power sliding window, power windows and locks, remote keyless entry, stereo with CD player, SIRIUS satellite radio with 1 year fee included, heated front seats, 6-way power front seats, rear 60/40 split fold down seat with storage compartment beneath, trailer tow wiring 4 pin connector, power heated fold away mirrors, full size spare, cargo and fog lights, 17” chrome aluminum wheels with all season tires.

Optional:

2008 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT (683)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the very versatile 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT Swivel ‘n Go minivan. This is the epitome in family vans that provides the best of easy stowing of seats for great cargo space. Then when you travel the family theme provides a table and swivel the 2nd row seats for up to 5 seating around the table for games, snacks or whatever. Or you can leave the seats in the normal positions with multiple video screens overhead. So much for boring “are we there yet” comments from the peanut gallery. In fact if they are still bored stop the car and let them out because they are hopelessly spoiled brats.

When we were kids we had to endure a long journey from the back seat without iPods, game boys, DVD players for current movies and cell phones to keep us occupied. Of course I’m not sure that was all that bad. We had to rely on family interaction with road games kids today have little interest in or time to enjoy. I think I’d have to go with the old except I want to keep my cell phone and the Nav system.

General Info:

Parts –  US/Canadian 73%

Assembly – Windsor, Ontario, Canada

Class:  – Special Purpose

Cars: – Avenger, Caliber, Charger, Dakota, Durango, Grand Caravan, Magnum, Nitro, Ram 15, 25 & 3500, Sprinter Van and Wagon.

Handling & Performance:

0-60 at about 9 seconds out of 251 horsepower that pulled the Crest mountain course with ease. I found myself passing traffic because it was smooth and responsive. And because these minivans are low to the ground there is much less tipping sensation than high profile SUVs.

Styling:

Creative thought for the most innovative and versatile of minivans today. Next thing you know they’ll put pull outs and overhead bunks. I suspect I could do without the power seat stowing feature however even though there is a manual over-ride in cash you lose power.

Fit and Finish:

Very good – an 8 on scale of 1-10. I hope the quality remains with the new ownership of Chrysler now apart from Daimler / Mercedes Benz control and influence. Time will tell.

Cost:

MSRP is good and options make this truly a great family van for the 21st century.

Conveniences and comfort:

Very creative Swivel 2nd row seats with table for interaction with 3rd row passengers. Games, coloring book, snack table etc., all quite convenient. All the entertainment system options make this van hard to beat.

Consumer Recommendation:

Great family vehicle with outstanding features for any occasion and use. You’ll fall in love with this versatile minivan.

Recognized Competition:

Good News:

Great family van, decent fuel economy, powerful, handles well with lots of entertainment options for the traveling family, 2nd row seats swivel 180 degrees to face the 3rd row seats.

Bad News:

2nd row seats must be removed if extra cargo area needed.

Standard Equipment:

2008 Honda Element 5-Door 2WD SC (682)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2008 Honda Element 5-Door 2WD SC. I asked Ilona (sig other) why she wanted such an ugly car. “I think they’re cute and I like the look”. OK! And isn’t that the way it should be. If we didn’t have different needs and wants there would still be only one car for everyone – Ford Model A of 100 years ago. Even Communist China has more variety than that.

Ilona was intrigued by the fact that you could open the doors and hose out the interior for simple clean up. Ok, I thought, the inside of her present car was a mess so this might do the trick. I tried not to say too much that would be misinterpreted – know what I mean. If she is happy that makes me happy.

General Info:

Parts –  US/Canadian 70%, Japan 20%.

Assembly – East Liberty, Ohio, USA

Class:  – SUV

Cars: – Accord, Accord Hybrid, Civic, Civic Hybrid, CR-V, Element, Fit, Odyssey

Pilot, Ridgeline & S2000.

Handling & Performance:

Well, I can’t say I haven’t warmed up to the homely cars that dot our highways. But Scion trips over the edge however. Back to the Element and how it handles. I like it. The Crest Test continues to be impressive in the Element because of its lower center of gravity that helps it hug the highway better than other conventional SUV’s.

Element was never intended to be a high performance car but it is anything but slow, and the acceleration is smooth and steady. I really found the car enjoyable to drive and a refreshingly different Sport Ute.

Styling:

Although they have added carpets it was in large part the simplicity of the rubber floors and wide opening doors that attracted Ilona to the Element. With an aging mom who has difficulty climbing up into other SUV’s this still has the major attributes of the class while giving you all the other strong points of the Mini Van.

I rather like the contrasting cladding that makes the Element even more distinctive and the theatre rear seating makes for great visibility of the road in front for those back seat drivers. The rear is also unusually roomy for the tallest of passengers and it is outstanding for 4 large adults. I think, however, I would have moved the rear seats up just a bit and given a little more cargo area.

Fit and Finish:

I don’t believe it was designed for tight fitting seams but it works for this economically priced utility. In other words it is not as refined as other SUVs intentionally.

Cost:

Well priced.

Conveniences and comfort:

Wide opening clamshell doors front and rear. Without center posts on the side doors you get unobstructed entry, which is especially handy for older folks or handicapped passengers.

Consumer Recommendation:

I have to tell you I was mildly surprised on the first attempt at testing this vehicle when I was met with a dead battery from an electrical problem, and the second try found a delay because of a radio failure. So much for myths of Japanese superiority. In this global community it is painfully apparent we’re all the same after all. We are human and subject to error equally. American car makers early on made lemons an art form in cars. But the whole industry is a study in change and part of the great experiment we all endure and most enjoy.

I never keep a car very long, but then I don’t change wives like some so it balances out. But in this car world I’m not so sure I wouldn’t keep my present car, and save my money for a “Fuel Cell Hydrogen” car likely to be available in 5 years. That will be a real significant change in our personal transportation. Everything else today is a choice between relatively homogenous capable transportation with no real flair for difference. That’s where Ilona has me… at least she bought something as different as you can find in today’s world. But then I should have expected that… men look to the hottest muscle car they can find, buy a suit that is like every other man, while women can’t be seen at a party in the same dress – shudder the thought.

Recognized Competition:

Good News:

Roomy, different, capable and fun to drive.

Bad News:

Disappointing fuel numbers, Ug-leee to many (ok – looks aren’t everything. It has a great personality).

Standard Equipment:

2.4 liter 166 hp 4-cylinder engine, 5-speed manual trans, 4-wheel power assist ABS disc brakes, electronic brake distribution, rear double wishbone suspension, drive by wire throttle, variable assist rack and pinion power steering, front & rear stabilizer bars, front and side airbags and side curtain airbags with rollover sensor, tire pressure monitoring system, remote entry, immobilizer theft deterrent, latch system for child seats, audio with MP3/wma playback, steering wheel audio controls, XM satellite radio (3 months fee included), air conditioning, removable flip up rear seats with 50/50 split, power windows and locks, adjustable steering column, cargo tie downs, 12 V outlets, cruise control, 18” alloy wheels, halogen headlights, intermittent front and rear wiper washers, rear privacy glass, power door mirrors, side cargo doors, clamshell tailgate.

2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 4WD LTZ Crew Cab (679)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 4WD LTZ Crew Cab with a 6 foot 6 inch bed. A longer 8 foot bed is available.

I’m critical about a lot of things including the cars that are being produced for our consumption. I like testing them and trying to keep up with the technology trends is especially interesting to me. Perhaps the most exciting thing on the horizon is the technology I reported on about 4 years ago when GM introduced the Fuel Cell car that was named the High Wire.

That gave me the opportunity to learn from other automotive journalists who specialize in evolving technologies like hydrogen powered cars. It is exciting to me because I have a not so private opinion that our car manufacturers are NOT stupid as my good friend Merkel thinks they are. At a very minimum I understand him to say they can do much better with the cars they produce. I believe he and others who think GM is in the tank are not looking at the entire picture and they get stuck in the trees and can’t see the forest.

From afar you can see more clearly and my belief is, from all the data and trends the emerging hydrogen technology is about to pop. Ok, so maybe it will be another five years but the energy world will be rocked by that change and it really isn’t very far away.

The LA Auto show was replete with announcements about their Fuel Cell cars and that gives hope to people concerned about world energy problems. It is estimated that China will eclipse the USA in energy demand in just two years. Wow. What do you think that will do to oil prices? Well, American ingenuity, and GM leading the charge, means we can leave fossil fuel energy to China and other third world countries while America moves on to cutting edge high tech alternate power sources as it continues to lead the world.

So what’s that got to do with the Chevrolet Silverado for 2008? A lot, because it is a GM car and until the world leader in hydrogen technology gives us the fuel cell cars, they continue to give us state of the art trucks like this Silverado. They deserve our support on three fronts: They are American as Midwest apple pie, they are developing the technology and thirdly they produce arguably the best cars and trucks for the money on planet earth.

Cars: – Avalanche, Aveo, Cobalt, Colorado, Corvette, Equinox, Express, HHR, Impala, Malibu, Monte Carlo, Silverado 15,25 &3500, Silverado Hybrid, Suburban, Tahoe, TrailBlazer & Uplander.

Handling & Performance:

I had the opportunity to put a lot of miles on this truck and it is truly impressive. It has to be one of the smoothest crew cab trucks ever – not only because of the ride but the Allison auto trans is wonderfully smooth shifting.

The ride was a little bumpy without a load but with only a few golfers, their luggage and golf club bags it smoothed right out. The powerful 6.6 liter Duramax Diesel engine with an Allison 6-speed automatic transmission (optional) is awesome and impressed the two construction contractors sharing the ride to Scottsdale, Arizona. From Acton, California to Scottsdale is nearly 400 miles. With travel in and around Scottsdale we put on 900 miles and burned 50 gallons of diesel fuel at $3.45 a gallon. Doing the math we got about 18 miles per gallon. Consumer reports says 13 mpg overall but my travel was nearly all freeway driving. Not good, but for a truck of this capability doing what it’s made to do that mileage isn’t bad. A golf trip 400 miles away is not its highest and best use. But if you want to haul a house you have 660 foot pounds of torque to do it with. Argh, argh, argh! I can just hear Tim Allen grunting his approval.

Styling:

Tough and rugged looking. Very nice.

Fit and Finish:

Very good.

Cost:

In class it is competitive at $39,590 which buys you a standard equipment package, and options added on my test vehicle amounted to $10,200 of which about $8,400 was for the Duramax Diesel and Allison Transmission.

Conveniences and comfort:

Extra smooth ride and about the quietest diesel engine on the road. In fact I’ll bet you wouldn’t even know it was a diesel if you took a ride and weren’t told.

One of the options is a Cargo management system that is worth the $95 cost. It makes tying down cargo really easy. I liked that a lot.

Consumer Recommendation:

You can select from 20 base trim levels. The standard equipment is great and unless you must have the highly valued Diesel package, I suspect you’ll be very happy with the gas V8 version. And if you look at the price of diesel fuel these days you’ll choke on over $4.00 per gallon in some places.

Recognized Competition:

Chevrolet Silverado 2500 $24-40,000, GMC Sierra 2500 HD $24-40,000, Dodge Ram 2500 $26-43,000, Ford F-250 Super Duty $22-38,000.

Good News:

Great work horse with ultimate diesel power plant and 660 ft. lbs of torque, comfortable ride, LTZ well equipped package, Consumer Reports says, “First year reliability of the diesel has been above average”.

Bad News:

Poor fuel economy and diesel version uses highest priced fuel.

Standard Equipment:

6.0 liter 353 hp V8 gas engine, 6-speed automatic transmission, torsion bar front suspension, multi leaf rear spring suspension, 4-wheel ABS with dynamic rear proportioning brakes, dual air bags, theft deterrent system, auto headlights, OnStar system (1 year included and Turn-by-turn navigation available), tire pressure monitor system, chrome rear bumper, 17” aluminum wheels, front tow hooks, cargo box illumination, tinted glass, fog lights, dual zone air conditioning, rear window defogger, 60/40 split rear seating, stereo with CD/MP3 format, XM satellite radio (3 months included), driver information center, intermittent wipers, tilt steering wheel, cruise control, carpeted floor and mats, battery run down protection, 24 hour roadside assistance. LTZ trim option includes 10 way power heated bucket seats with driver memory, leather seating, power fold and heated mirrors with turn signal and driver side auto dimming, Bose premium speaker system, heated washer fluid system, remote vehicle start, HD trailering equipment, locking rear differential, steering wheel radio controls, power windows and locks, auto dimming mirror with compass and temp display, rear audio controls, leather wrapped steering wheel , remote keyless entry, illuminated vanity mirrors, electronic shift transfer case.

Options:

Adjustable pedals $365, Easy lift tailgate package $95, 6.6 liter Duramax Diesel engine $7,195, Allison 6-speed auto transmission $1,200, Power sliding sunroof $795, Power sliding rear window $200, brake controller $200, Cargo management system $95, Radiator cover $55.

2008 Honda Ridgeline 4-Door (678)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2008 Honda Ridgeline 4-Door. I was able to put about 1,000 miles on the truck because of a wedding I needed to attend. 4 people, luggage for a week and a walker for grandma with space to spare. I couldn’t have been more impressed. I’d take this truck anywhere and for Honda’s first and only truck they forgot to make it look like a truck.

That would be a good thing and this truck is sure to be a smash hit. No pun intended. You will begin to see them on the roads in increasing numbers. You can count on that.

General Info:

Parts – US/Canadian 75%.

Assembly – Alliston, Ontario, Canada; Engine – USA, Transmission – Japan.

Class:  – Special Purpose – Truck

Cars: – Accord, Accord Hybrid, Civic, Civic Hybrid, CR-V, Element, Fit, Odyssey, Pilot, Ridgeline & S2000.

Observation:

Noticed a sign on the freeway that said “Report Drunk Drivers – Call 911”. It occurred to me the message was to say don’t be silent when you know the law is being broken. So I suggest Cal Trans post another message… “Report Illegal Aliens”  – because they are breaking the law and endangering all including my friends who are Mexican Americans as I am an Italian American and proud of both heritages.

Handling & Performance:

I’m not thrilled with the fuel economy but it is a very spunky V6. It is extremely comfortable and not truck-like at all. The ride is ultra smooth in large part because it weighs 4,500 lbs.

Styling:

Very thoughtful storage compartments in a not so original design attempt. The unique truck design without the traditional pick up truck separation of bed from cab is patterned after the Chevrolet Avalanche that camouflages the fact it is really a pick up truck. It works great. Nice job GM. The most sincere form of flattery is when people copy you.

Fit and Finish:

This truck is car like in how nicely it is assembled with close seams and not at all truck like.

Cost:

At first blush it appears pricey but once you look at the standard equipment you’ll see why it is priced as it is. There are three trim levels – RT $27,700, midrange RTS $30,075 and RTL $31,490—or $34,640 with a moonroof, XM satellite radio and a navigation system. In any case it is quite competitive in class.

Conveniences and comfort:

Outstanding perfect array of features that puts you at the top of the comfort curve.

Consumer Recommendation:

In the truck segment this is a must see. It is, of course, a Honda-car with a good record of reliability.

Recognized Competition:

Honda Ridgeline $28-35,000, Nissan Titan $24-39,000, GMC Sierra 1500 $17-41,000, Dodge Ram 1500 $21-40,000, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 $17-38,000, Ford F-150 $17-36,000, Toyota Tundra $22-42,000.

Good News:

Fantastic storage compartments, in-bed trunk, fun to drive, take anywhere truck.

Bad News:

Poor fuel economy.

Standard Equipment:

3.5 liter 247 hp V6 engine, 5-speed auto transmission with heavy duty cooler, 4-wheel drive, 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS electronic brake distribution and brake assist, 4-wheel independent suspension, front and rear stabilizer bars, variable assist steering, dual front and side air bags, side curtain air bags with roll over sensors, vehicle stability assist, tire pressure monitoring system, remote entry with security, immobilizer theft deterrent system, child latch system, Navigation, leather trimmed seats and steering wheel, Audio sound system with 6- in-dash CD player, XM satellite radio, steering wheel audion controls, climate control, heated front seats with 8-way driver seat with lumbar, multifunctional center storage console with sliding armrest, split fold up rear seat with under seat cargo, fold down rear armrest, power windows, power sliding rear window, cruise control, homelink, temp gauge, 12 V outlets, power moonroof with tilt, power door mirrors, dual action tailgate, composite cargo bed, in Bed trunk, prewire trailer connection 4/7 pin.

2008 Chrysler Town & Country 2 WD (672)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2008 Chrysler Town & Country 2 WD and although outwardly you won’t see much difference in design it is the optional configurations that will strike you as it did me. Innovation which has been the rule rather than the exception from Chrysler products is a real plus. It is perhaps the best company over the past couple of decades to think (and I hate the term) outside the box.

The Mini Van generally delivers the best in family transportation, in my opinion, and although they project the image of a vehicle for “Soccer Moms” they are just the best family vehicle on the market.

General Info:

Parts – US/Canadian 73%.

Assembly – Windsor, Ontario, Canada

Class:  – Special Purpose

Cars: – 300, Aspen, Crossfire, Pacifica, PT Cruiser, Sebring and Town & Country.

Observation:

Well, we all know where the CHP is when we make a mistake but what I want to know is where they are when dangerous debris is on our highways. Seems to me that is much more important – how about you?

Handling & Performance:

Typical mini van with double sliding side doors and a rear liftgate. It is a low profile vehicle that handles much better than those vans of a generation ago, and the engines and transmissions are much more sophisticated.

Styling:

Clean and sleek with all the bells and whistles to carry a good size family with options that make this a great vacation / holiday travel companion. The DVD player options – two of them – with headsets – provide the ultimate in tools to occupy several people. The optional swivel chairs and table between 2nd and 3rd row seating gives unparalleled versatility in making travel convenient and comfortable. The entertainment system is fantastic for those long trips.

Fit and Finish:

Excellent.

Cost:

Not to bad for all the capability in this class van around $30,000.

Conveniences and comfort:

Chrysler came to play and is a serious contender for the best of the best. They are perhaps the most innovative of car companies. My test vehicle was the Stow and Go version but I reviewed the Swivel and Go version and it is truly impressive. Really cool with captains chairs in the second row that swivel around to the rear so the 2nd and 3rd rows can interact with a table between them. The kids (or adults) can enjoy a home like environment for games or conversation over tea and crumpets.

Consumer Recommendation:

If you’re in the market for a family vehicle, you won’t beat this one. SUV’s have been more popular but times, they are a changing. I don’t believe these will go the way of the Station Wagon of the mid 20th century. The Mini Van has evolved to meet the SUV but with the added convenience of sliding doors and low thresholds that are friendly to kids and older folks.

Recognized Competition:

Chrysler Town & Country $22-36,000, Buick Terraza $27-31,000, Dodge Grand Caravan $22-27,000, Hyundai Entourage $24-30,000, Mazda 5 $18-22,000, Saturn Relay $22-28,000, Kia Sedona $21-26,000, Mercury Monterey $28,595, Ford Freestar $20-30,000, Nissan Quest $21-34,000, Chevrolet Uplander $21-29,000, Honda Odyssey $26-39,000, Toyota Sienna $24-38,000.

Good News:

There is a great selection of competition to choose from which makes bargaining easier, great optional configurations, comfy and convenient for old and young alike with wonderful interior lighting.

Bad News:

I didn’t see much worth mentioning but I wish they’d do better with fuel economy.

Standard Equipment:

3.8 liter V6 engine, 6 speed automatic transmission, front and side airbags, ESP electronic stability program, anti lock brakes, power pedals, auto headlights, tire pressure monitor system, dual power sliding doors, power liftgate, child seat anchor system, rear window defroster, rear intermittent wiper washer, stow’n go 2nd row bucket seats, 3rd row 60/40 bench seat, 2nd row power windows, 3rd row power vented windows, removable floor console, dual glove boxes, overhead storage and surround lighting, removable rechargeable flash light, 8-way power driver seat, 12 v and 115 v outlets, analog clock, am/fm with CD / MP3 radio with steering wheel audio controls and 6-speakers, cruise control, leather wrapped steering wheel, remote keyless entry with engine immobilizer power locks, quad halogen headlights, fog lights, sunscreen glass, power heated fold away mirrors and roof rack.

Optional equipment:

dual DVD entertainment system, hard disc drive, single disc DVD player, 2nd and 3rd 8-inch monitors w/DVD player, wireless headphones, video remote control, Sirius satellite digital radio, 1 year service included and rearview backup camera ($2,395).
