2008 Dodge Durango SUV (711)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2008 Dodge Durango SUV. Ok, so SUV’s are a dirty name in today’s world, but for many it is the best vehicle to service their need. Friend Merkel did a lot of research to buy a fuel efficient family vehicle for wife FJ and young sons David and Simon. That 4-seat need resulted in choosing the Toyota Yaris with consistent performance of 38 mpg for them over the past year. FJ was on the last Olympic equestrian team and her teaching requires a big truck and at diesel fuel prices it is very costly to drive, but necessary for all the gear and pulling a horse trailer. In short, there is a need beyond “Want” that justifies individuals owning larger gas hogs.

Meanwhile Toyota will begin manufacturing the Prius in the US as soon as it is able to adjust its facilities to that production – they say about 3 months. With the slow down in truck based products all car makers will replace gas guzzlers with the growing demand for a shift to smaller cars. You likely are beginning to see the Smart Car on US highways and the shift will grow from here on out. Gas prices will not allow us to drive what we want to any longer as long as fanatic ecologists fight against smart energy like Nuclear and domestic pumping of oil estimated at a reserve of over 200 years worth in the ground. There should be a balance and those passionate ecology fighters should be placing their energy on pushing wind and other earth friendly sources of energy while we provide more domestic oil to refineries.

General Info:

Parts –  US/Canadian 75%. Mexico Engine; Transmission US.

Assembly – Newark, Delaware, USA

Class:  – SUV

Cars: – Avenger, Caliber, Charger, Challenger, Dakota, Durango, Grand Caravan, Magnum, Nitro, Ram 15, 25 & 3500, Sprinter Van and Wagon & Viper.

Observation:

e-mails I’ve received by many exclaim foreign oil use is simply “fueling” the anti American war machine. How could our leaders and “Real” Americans allow this to happen? With oil sands and shale in the US as touted by Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer we have all the oil we need for a very long time. Link follows:  http://www.business.mt.gov/govsenergypage.asp.

People tell me they are mad as hell that we over regulate every segment of our economy that seeks to delay developing alternate fuel technologies. True enough.

The minority puts great energy into fighting against off shore drilling, a teensy weensy part of Alaskan oil fields or anywhere there is an insect, bird, fish or plant that might be inconvenienced. Yet when farmers begin to switch to turning our valuable corn crops into

Bio fuel they don’t really care that the price of consumable corn takes food off tables.

Handling & Performance:

If power is important the 5.7 liter HEMI option will do the trick. 0-60 in about 7 seconds. A 4.7 liter 303 hp V8 is standard. But that power is available with fair fuel economy performance for such a big vehicle because of the Multi Displacement System (MDS) where it runs on 4 of the 8 cylinders when all 8 are not needed on the highway.

I won’t say this is a porpoise but remember the big Buick Road Master – that we lovingly referred to as a road hog. Well this reminds me of the rolling ride of yesteryear, like the shocks were shot.

Styling:

Typical design with Dodge tough guy look. It is interesting that you must be stopped to use the nav system but finding a radio station is far more difficult yet equally as distracting. I have a suggestion – put knobs back on radios.

Fit and Finish:

Outstanding, thanks to Daimler Chrysler ownership days and influence.

Cost:

Very good for serviceability level of this versatile vehicle with an exceptional features list. Once again you can save $3,000 by opting out of the Nav system and buy a portable version from Garmin or even Tom-Tom.

Conveniences and comfort:

Outstanding array of things that make life easier. The tire pressure monitor system has alerted me to impending problems on many occasions that often result in being able to take care of a problem before it hit me.

Consumer Recommendation:

There are lots of reasons why a larger vehicle is needed for many family functions. And you will have to be creative in how you travel. Your commute may mean driving a short way to the Metro Link for public transportation and save the difference in fuel cost back to the days when it was half today’s prices.

Above all, don’t panic, thinking you have to give up the big family car, truck or SUV. Just go out and buy another for those times when you don’t need that big car. I suggest you look closely at the Smart Car, Yaris and ask your Chevy dealer when the Volt will be available.

Recognized Competition:

Dodge Durango $27-38,000, Chevrolet Trail Blazer $28-38,000, Buick Rainier $32-34,000, Saturn Outlook $29-33,000, GMC Envoy $28-37,000, Subaru Tribeca $30-34,000, Toyota 4Runner $28-39,000, Hyundai Santa Fe $21-30,000, Mitsubishi Eneavor $28-31,000, Isuzu Ascender $27-29,000, Suzuki XL7 $21-29,000, Ford Explorer $26-37,000, Jeep Commander $28-43,000, Jeep Grand Cherokee $29-43,000, Mazda CX-9 $29-35,000, Kia Sorento $21-26,000, Nissan Pathfinder $26-39,000.

Good News:

Robust features list, lots of convenience and space, built Dodge tough with power to spare, Multi Displacement engine for better fuel economy and not the least of which is this vehicle is made in the USA.

Bad News:

More complicated than necessary radio controls.

Standard Equipment:

5.7 liter HEMI multi displacement 335 hp V8 engine, 5-speed auto trans, electronic stability, 4-wheel Antilock disc brakes, front and side curtain air bags, back up camera, tire pressure monitoring system, battery run down protection, variable intermittent wiper/washers front and rear, power lift gate, 27 gal. 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 Limited Edition (710)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 Limited Edition. Hearts will be breaking all over the world for those who want one and can’t have one. And I have to tell you I didn’t want to give this one back.

Well, what can you say? This is a very special car and it draws attention where ever you go. And why not. It is different in today’s world. It is Retro so it will also have huge following from all my friends from the 1970’s, as the Model A Ford sedan or 1957 Chevrolet I owned back in High School and beyond. Our youth then was somehow better because of the cars that embellished our lives. They came before girls. Go figure. And now that we’re older cars have once again taken top spot on our “Hit Parade”. You know what I mean! Of course you do.

Jay Leno has a great piece on this latest addition to his car collection at www.jaylenosgarage.com. Take a look and see his 1970 Challenger and the new 2008 version. My question to Jay is – Why the black one. The Orange is Awesome.

People looked at and admired this car whether young or old. I didn’t quite understand that except you have to assume the young admirers were attracted because the style of that era cars were memorable and compared to the cookie cutter computer generated cars of today they expressed art and style only a human can envision.

Traveling down the highway elicits every manner of interest including simple head turning, thumbs up, cameras out the window and great big smiles. People’s comments included awesome, cool, beautiful, love the color, whose car is this? is it out yet?, how much is it, and on and on.

A Mercedes Benz owner pulled over as I parked and was so impressed he was certain he’d add this to his small stable instead of the soon to be released Camaro. He was ok with the price, but I have to tell you this will sell well over sticker.

Friend Peter did a photo shoot for the Norwegian magazine AmeriCar. Der neue Dodge Challenger unter 20.000 Euro. Take a look see at  http://www.americar.de/inside/inside_artikel/id=152. Then we did another for V8 Magazine in Findland. They will be sad to hear that this limited edition may only allow a couple of them to be sent over there. They are huge fans of the American Muscle Car as are most in the world.

General Info:

Parts –  US/Canadian; engine: Mexico, transmission: Germany.

Assembly – Brampton, Ontario, Canada

Class:  – Large Cars

Cars: – Avenger, Caliber, Charger, Challenger, Dakota, Durango, Grand Caravan, Magnum, Nitro, Ram 15, 25 & 3500, Sprinter Van and Wagon & Viper.

Handling & Performance:

If you have a need for speed as I often do this Challenger will impress every racing bone in your body. It will be as natural a high as you can get legally. Acceleration G force pins you back in the seat as you feel 0-60 mph in about 4 seconds. The Crest test delivered lots of fun and no Highway Patrol interruptions. I wish those guys would tell me when they’re going to be there. Then I could take my cars over another secret route over the San Gabriel Mountains. It has a solid tight ride that is light years ahead and better than any car of the 1960’s and 1970’s.

Styling:

This is reminiscent of my Happy Days experiences and conjures up visions of Dukes of Hazard Sitcom which featured a 1969 Charger but this Challenger looks more like General Lee than the Charger Retro of 2007. It truly represents an American Muscle Car Tradition – and now that Daimler sold Chrysler back to an American company it is again an American product. Thanks to the design folks who did themselves proud to present us with such a great classic at this time of boring “Robo-Cars”. “I never felt more proud to be an American”, and I’m not even running for office.

Fit and Finish:

Excellent.

Cost:

Not likely to sell at sticker price and you can bet the sales price will find its level based on supply and demand.

Conveniences and comfort:

All good stuff, and no comment needed here since buyers of this car won’t make a buying decision based on what creature comforts it has.

Consumer Recommendation:

From my youth to today’s youth everyone, including the lady buyers, loves this car. Don’t wait, if you’re interested, because it can only go up in price. Of the recognized competition the Mustang, of course, is the closest competitor and I suspect if you’re interested in this Challenger you’ll want to test drive the Ford Mustang.

Recognized Competition:

Dodge Challenger $37-39,000, Chevrolet Corvette $46-78,000, Mercedes Benz CLK Class $46-90,000, Pontiac G8 $27-29,000, Ford Mustang $20-32,000, Mazda RX-8 $26-32,000, Chrysler 300 $25-42,000, Nissan 350Z $29-41,000.

Good News:

Beautiful, awesome, great color, fast and definitely fun to drive. This will get your heart started and give you a jolt from time to time.

Bad News:

“Green”? What green? And you can be sure this won’t be purchased as a commuter or those seeking fuel economy.

Standard Equipment:

6.1 liter 420 hp HEMI SRT V8 engine, 5-speed automatic trans with Autostick, 20” aluminum wheels, carbon fiber hood stripe, multistage air bags with side curtain front and rear, electronic stability control, all-speed traction control, 4-wheel ABS Brembo performance disc brakes, keyless system with push button starter button, cruise control, rear window defroster, air conditioning, power 8-way driver seat, halogen headlights, fog lights, heated leather seating, 13 speaker Kicker SRT high performance audio system with 6-disc DVD MP3 and 322 watt amplifier and 200 watt subwoofer and SIRIUS satellite radio including 1 year service, leather wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, manual lumbar support front seats, rear 60/40 folding seat, tilt / Telescopic steering column, power windows, vehicle information and trip computer, illuminated vanity mirror visors, power heated mirrors, Hands free communication and auto dimming mirror.

2008 Mazda 5 Grand Touring AT (709)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2008 Mazda 5 Grand Touring AT. And for those of you who have driven Mazda’s you likely have an interest in what Mazda is doing. There isn’t a cult following per se, but it is certain that people do come back to what has worked for them. Me, I’ve always liked the product even though it doesn’t have the “Toyota” name that is marketed well.

If you’re new to Mazda you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the overall quality and workmanship of the vehicles they produce. And although this is not my favorite look it is not ugly either. Ok a little homely. Just goes to show you what computers will do. I think we’ve over done Computer Aided Designs and left out the human touches. Chrysler is the most innovative of all the car makers today and mixes the CAD systems with real people to come up with cars like the PT Cruiser, Plymouth Prowler, Dodge Challenger, Charger and the 300. Bravo Chrysler and I hope you keep it up.

General Info:

Parts – US/Canadian 0%, Japan 95%,

Assembly – Hiroshima, Japan

Class:  – Minivans

Cars: – CX-7, CX-9, Mazda 3, 5 & 6, Mazdaspeed3 & 6, MX-5 Miata, RX-8, Tribute, Tribute Hybrid & Truck.

Handling & Performance:

I don’t know how they managed to do it, but I felt very annoyed with the touchy accelerator and brake pedals. Otherwise the 153 hp engine is very good and the gear ratios work well at all speeds. It was comfortable and easy to drive.

Styling:

Minivans are super convenient for entry and exit because of the sliding side doors, especially for those tight parking places. This however is a compact so all has been scaled down. I can’t say I’m thrilled with the look but they appear to have concentrated on function over form.

Fit and Finish:

Mazda good. Not spectacular but they are consistently good with obvious care that has always been a Japanese trait. I’m biased, I have to tell you, because I have experienced the exceptional work ethic of the Japanese when our Naval air Squadrons sea planes were refurbished in Japan. I was a crewmember and we’d take the planes to Japan from our base in the Philippines where we spent some time getting to know the people. Conclusion: People don’t start wars – power hungry politicians do it for profit.

Cost:

In the hunt but the competition is fierce and capable.

Features and Conveniences:

Standard stuff is very good and I’ve always found Japanese electronics to be user friendly and the exact opposite for German cars that have a need somehow to over complicate things. Again, although Nav and Satellite radio are options, I recommend buying them separately as aftermarket additions if you’re interested in saving money. In this case it will surely save about $2,000. In addition portable is just that – you can use them in any car. That even goes for Bluetooth devices that are “Really” cheap.

Consumer Recommendation:

Resource – www.safercar.gov

I have not tested the Honda Fit at this writing but all the competition is formidable. There are too few not to drive them all. Then I’m sure fuel economy will tip the scales for you as they will increasingly for most of us as gas prices rise. Me, I like the PT Cruiser for SUV type styling and the convenience of the Mazda 5 as a small family minivan.

Recognized Competition:

Mazda 5 $18-23,000, Ford Focus Wagon $17-18,000, Chrysler PT Cruiser $15-23,000, Mazda 3 $14-20,000, Honda Fit $14-16,000, Kia Spectra5 $15,995, Kia Rondo $16-20,000.

2009 – Toyota Matrix $16-22,000, Pontiac Vibe $15-19,000, Scion xB $15,750, Chevrolet HHR $ n/a.

Good News:

Convenient design with especially easy entrance and exit, fun to drive, comfy and spacious for the smaller size minivan.

Bad News:

Touchy accelerator and brakes.

Standard Equipment:

2.3 liter 153 hp inline 4 cylinder engine, 5-speed automatic transmission, 17” Aluminum Alloy wheels, auto headlights, halogen fog lights, rain sensing wipers, 6 passenger seating, leather trimmed seats with heated front, fold flat 2nd row seats with under seat storage and fold out table, climate control, front and rear 12 V outlets, tire pressure monitoring, 4-wheel disc brakes, front and rear stabilizer bars, variable assist power steering, rear wiper washer, power heated mirrors, power windows and locks, audio with 6 disc CD changer, leather steering wheel with audio controls & leather shift knob, tilt and telescopic column, cruise control, power moon roof, Bluetooth hands free phone system, front and side airbags, rear side air curtain air bags, LATCH rear child safety anchors, anti-theft engine immobilizer.

2008 Mazda CX-7 Grand Touring FWD (708)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2008 Mazda CX-7 and although I like this vehicle I was a little surprised at the engine noise. It reminded me of Tim Allen in the Santa Clause movie and the line “there rose such a clatter”.

Secondly, with all my preaching over the years people still insist on buying fuel IN-efficient cars, and mostly it has been because of their love affair with the automobile. And even though I have preached to my kids as well (they never listen), I have to defend my son buying a big Tahoe SUV. Why? Because he has 4 kids. Count them and the parents and all the car seats for the three little ones and I get tired just thinking of it. Then throw in all the gear for a trip to grandma’s house over the river and through the woods and you have to question the wisdom of large families. Well, you get the point. Oh, I forgot the boat. Can’t pull a boat with a Toyota Yaris that gets an impressive 38 mpg. To my son Mike I suggest he think about a second car that most of us can actually afford to drive.

Fight back, I say. Buy a fuel efficient car and push the manufacturers to change the emphasis from profits alone as motivation in making cars we must buy. Yes, these big gas guzzlers are profitable. Ok, so they were profitable. Now you can’t give them away. Why, because people are worried about where gas prices may go. Remember the world price of gas is over $8.00 a gallon. Helloooo!

With nearly half of every car on the road today being a truck or SUV the turn around won’t be easy or fun for anyone. However, don’t panic. Keep the SUV, park it most of the time until you really need it and buy a Yaris, Prius, Hyundai Accent or wait for the new Chevy Volt Electric car.

General Info:

Parts – US/Canadian 10%, Japan 85%,

Assembly – Hiroshima, Japan

Class:  – Special Purpose

Cars: – CX-7, CX-9, Mazda 3, 5 & 6, Mazdaspeed3 & 6, MX-5 Miata, RX-8, Tribute, Tribute Hybrid & Truck.

Observation:

Well it’s the LAW now that you must use a “Hands Free” device while talking on your cell phone driving the car. It’s a good law most would agree but it’s a pain in the neck to “HAVE” to use it. Come-on, lets face it, either way when you’re on the phone in the car you have to know most of us can’t walk and chew gum at the same time. So why do we think we can drive a car safely and carry on a conversation on the phone? Think back and try to recall where you just traveled while on the cell phone? Bet you experienced a blank spot in your memory banks.

Handling & Performance:

You’ll enjoy driving this Mazda CX-7, I’m sure, but you won’t appreciate giving up performance and not getting any better fuel economy than it delivers. It is a perfect size for mobility and agility in most driving situations, but not as good on the open highway as the CX-9.

Styling:

Of course the CX-7 is just a cut below the CX-9 but it can save $10,000 in purchase price if you don’t need the extra 2 seats. Both are great looking and the crossover has been a natural evolution from the SUV. The CX-7 provides good cargo space and seating for five with that sport look rolled into the SUV convenience. It comes in 3 trims; Sport, Touring and Grand Touring that I tested.

Fit and Finish:

Very good.

Cost:

In the hunt in class.

Features and Conveniences:

Good compliment of useful standard equipment and features and eliminating expensive options can reduce the price $6,000 if you can do without the voice activated Navigation system, upgraded sound and entertainment systems and a few other minor items. Reminder – buy a portable Nav system instead, and consider the kids will probably be more interested in their new iPods and game boys etc.

Consumer Recommendation:

Resource – www.safercar.gov

Look at the Hybrid versions if you are considering an SUV/ Crossover.

Saturn Vue Green Line Hybrid and coming in 2009 – Ford Escape Hybrid. Some other notables are the Mazda Tribute Hybrid, Toyota Highlander Hybrid, Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid and GMC Yukon Hybrid.

Recognized Competition:

Mazda CX-7 $22-26,000, Saturn Vue $22-29,000, Saturn Vue Green line Hybrid $25,645, Pontiac Torrent $24-30,000, Mercury Mariner $22-26,000, Chevrolet Equinox $23-30,000, Jeep Compass $17-23,000,  Dodge Nitro $20-28,000, Toyota RAV4 $22-27,000, Honda CR-V $21-28,000, Hyundai Santa Fe $21-30,000, Ford Edge $26-33,000, Ford Escape $20-27,000, Mitsubishi Outlander $20-25,000, Suzuki Grand Vitara $19-25,000, Kia Sorento $21-26,000, Jeep Grand Cherokee $29-43,000, BMW X3 $38,600, Infiniti EX $32-37,000.

Good News:

Spacious, sporty styling and popular crossover convenience.

Bad News:

Poor fuel economy and noisy engine.

Standard Equipment:

2.3 liter 244 hp 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, 6-speed sport shift automatic transmission, front wheel drive, 16” Aluminum Alloy wheels, auto headlights, heated power mirrors, 5-passenger leather trimmed seats, 8-way power driver front heated seats, rear 60/40 split fold down seats,  tilt leather wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise controls, power windows, front and side airbags, stability control and traction control, LATCH child safety system, vented 4-wheel anti lock disc brakes, fog lights, variable intermittent wipers front and rear, retractable rear cargo cover, climate control, power windows and locks, rear seat armrest, 2- 12 volt outlets, tire pressure monitoring system, keyless entry, anti-theft engine immobilizer and audio with CD and 4-speakers.

2008 Volkswagen Jetta SE (705)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2008 Volkswagen Jetta SE 2.5 which is a substantial little compact that borders on being a luxury car relative to the competition. The Audi and Acura, although listed as competition, are over priced and cost to benefit suffers. However some people are more concerned with looking rich than concerned about cost per mile they pay to chug around in traffic with absolutely no opportunity to show off their high performance automobile.

Jetta gives you a better feeling for driving a more fuel efficient, lower cost buy in commuter. Fact is the last time I tested an Audi on the highway it turned out to be an expensive experience when pushing the limits resulted in a speeding ticket. I had the same problem in Austria testing a Mercedes Benz on the wide open road where motorcycle cops are just as devious as they are here in America. But there you pay on the spot. I have always wondered if the fine ever made it from his pocket to his employer. More importantly, was he really a police officer? Why not just forget the ticket and call it a tip.

I should know better than to drive that way on a public highway anyway. Since I test drive most all cars on the race track I shouldn’t have to do any of that foolish stuff on the highway. Shame on me. Quite frankly I’m more ticked off that I got caught. Let’s be honest here.

General Info:

Parts – US/Canadian 13%, Germany 40%, Mexico 35%

Assembly – Puebla, Mexico

Class:  – Compact Cars

Cars: – Eos, GTI, Jetta, New Beetle, Passat, Passat Wagon, R32, Rabbit and Touareg 2.

Observation:

Remember discussing fuel economy and world price of gas? Well consider that in Europe where fuel per gallon is about $8.00 Europeans are more conscious of driving clean diesel fuel efficient cars that get at least twice the fuel economy as do American cars. Thus they pay the same per mile as do American drivers. My question to you who are in the know about the auto and oil companies is – why haven’t we adopted that driving philosophy in America? Write me and provide credentials and I will publish your answer.

Handling & Performance:

The average fuel economy for the compact class in the US is 29 mpg and this US version of the Jetta is below average at 24 mpg.

Styling:

This Jetta reminds me of the ever popular BMW and Acura which I always enjoy driving. But I have found many people go for “ugly”, by most standards, such as the Scion from Toyota or the Element from Honda (I’ve come to like the Element). I think the popularity of such cars is because we like to be different from the crowd. So in the scheme of things this Jetta is pretty conventional in design even if many simply say it is too much the same as the majority of cars on the road and thus boring and uninteresting. I call those “Cookie Cutter” cars, but Jetta is a rather sporty commuter and well done in my opinion.

Fit and Finish:

Jetta is thoughtfully put together and overall quite nice. I favor the bulky and solid built feeling you get from cars like this Jetta and tend to shy away from the dainty cars like Jaguar for example, which explains why Jag is a “Chick” car.

Cost:

Pricing is slightly over the average of the competition.

Features and Conveniences:

Wow … for the MSRP pricing this puppy is pretty well endowed. But I have to tell you standard or optional I find some things are not only unnecessary luxuries they can be down right nuisances and worse. The anti theft locks on the wheels sound good but that’s what we have insurance for. Just get a flat, when you’re in a hurry, and can’t find that special key to unlock the lugs… know what I mean?

Consumer Recommendation:

Resource – www.safercar.gov

If you want the sportier, well equipped, well assembled, this is a good choice and less money than the higher priced near luxury competition.

Recognized Competition:

Volkswagen Jetta $17-24,000, Audi A4 $29-48,000, Ford Focus $14-17,000, Chevrolet Cobalt $14-22,000, Hyundai Elantra $14-16,000, Mazda 3 $14-20,000, Honda Civic $15-25,000, Subaru Impreza $17-35,000, Saturn Ion $12-20,000, Chevrolet Malibu $20-27,000, Honda Civic Hybrid $23-24,000, Nissan Sentra $16-20,000, Kia Spectra $13-16,000, Suzuki Forenza $14-15,000, Toyota Corolla $15-20,000, Mitsubishi Lancer $14-18,000, Acura TSX $29-32,000, Scion tC $17,000.

Good News:

Nice to drive and well equipped and good utility of engine and design.

Bad News:

Plain styling, only fair fuel economy for this class and I read about reliability and good dealership service issues.

Standard Equipment:

2.5 liter 170 hp inline 5 cylinder engine, 6-speed automatic trans with paddle shifter, front wheel drive, variable assist electro-mechanical steering, 4-wheel anti-lock disc brake system, with engine braking assist, stability program, differential lock, front and side airbags and side curtain head airbags front and rear, child LATCH system and child safety rear door locks, daytime running lights, tire pressure monitoring system, climate control, power heated mirrors, intermittent front wipers with heated washers, cruise control, 60/40 split rear seat, tilt and telescoping steering column, remote keyless entry system, power central locking system, power windows, heated, height and lumbar adjusted front seats, rear seat armrest with storage and pass through, anti theft alarm with immobilizer theft deterrent system, 6-in dash CD changer with MP3 format, Sirius Satellite radio (3 mos included), power glass sunroof with tilt and slide, 16” alloy wheels with anti-theft locks.

“An Automotive Love Affair”
By Joseph Mavilia       2008 Saturn Astra 3 Door XR

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2008 Saturn Astra 3-Door XR compact crossover
built in Belgium based on Opel’s Astra. So this is the US version of that
European car which is built well for Euro budget conscious consumers.

I found its interior equipment and features control layout to be foreign as
well and not to my liking. I won’t bore you with the details because after a
week I could get by but they just weren’t as intuitive and friendly as they
could be for US consumers generally. The guy in charge of the development
team for the US version, Don Straitiff is said to have done little to make
it more acceptable to American consumers. I’m sure it was more budget based
than thinking it was all that different from other cars sold in America.

Observation:

I was watching the news the other day and they were talking with SUV owners
at the gas pump and one young man said of the gas prices, “I didn’t see it
coming”. The DMV should take that guys license away because he has to be a
bit blind. But I would say to him, now that you are strapped with $4 gas on
the way to world market prices of up to $8 a gallon don’t panic. Don’t dump
the SUV because for the loss you’d take on selling it right now you can buy
a Smart car from Mercedes Benz that is the rage of Europe for $11,000 that
gets about 50 mpg. Drive it commuting and when you have to pull the boat or
motorcycle trailer take the truck/SUV.

Handling & Performance:

The automatic transmission has a unique Neutral Idle feature that shifts
into neutral whenever the car is stopped and idling, thereby eliminating
torque-converter drag.

It has nice handling characteristics from the front engine front wheel drive
and braking is excellent because of larger disc brakes. The European Opel
version has smaller discs that tend to squeak. It seems American consumers
are more picky about squeaky brakes.

Styling:

There is something of a European flair in the look to offset the lousy
interior controls.

Fit and Finish:

Very good as you’d expect from most European products.

Cost:

Not bad and the good news is there is a crowd of competition in this
commuter class.

Features and Conveniences:

Large cargo area for this compact and usability is enhanced with easy fold
down seats.

Consumer Recommendation:

<http://www.safercar.gov>
Because you’re in the market for a car you need to look at the hottest class
and any of these will be a better investment when it comes time for resale.
The Smart Car will do better on fuel consumption but it is only a two seater
and really doesn’t belong in the mix. But if 2 seats is ok it is the best on
gas of all listed.

Recognized Competition:

Saturn Astra $16-18,000, Honda Civic $15-25,000, Mazda 3 $14-20,000, Pontiac

every increase in gas prices.

2008 Honda Accord EXL (703)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2008 Honda Accord 2 Door EXL V6 NV (Navigation). It is assembled in Marysville, Ohio, USA using parts from the US and Canada 60%, and Japan 25%. It’s in the Compact class and Honda’s lineup includes – Accord, Accord Hybrid, Civic, Civic Hybrid, CR-V, Element, Fit, Odyssey, Pilot, Ridgeline and S2000. I’ve tested them all but I don’t have to tell you this is the best looking Accord ever. Well, it is in my opinion.

It was my pleasure to review the car in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Hopping on and off the ferries to the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington State we had the opportunity to cozy up to this lovely automobile. It took us effortlessly, in part because of a great navigation system, to romantic historic places like Port Angeles and Port Townsend, Victoria BC and Orcus Island where the film Free Willie was made. Friend Glenn, the FX guy, was the rescue diver on the filming. Lucky guy because that is an enchanting island. From a mountain top on Orcus you get a 360 degree panoramic view and can see many of the Canadian San Juan’s and Vancouver as well. I highly recommend the journey in any make auto, but this Accord helped to make our trip special. The rain forest was very cool too where we stopped on our drive down the coast to Astoria and the Columbia River.

General Info:

Parts – US/Canadian 60%, Japan 25%,

Assembly – Marysville, Ohio, USA

Class:  – Compact

Cars: – Accord, Accord Hybrid, Civic, Civic Hybrid, CR-V, Element, Fit, Odyssey, Pilot, Ridgeline, S2000.

Handling & Performance:

Sweet, smooth, powerful, quiet are just some adjectives to describe this lovely car.

Styling:

Bravo Honda. This is a car that Honda has a right to be really proud of. Nice job guys.

Fit and Finish:

Excellent.

Cost:

Worth the price of admission.

Features and Conveniences:

If you read my column from time to time you’ll know that the most useful feature in today’s cars is the Navigation system. I wouldn’t buy a car without one. However, I will remind you that Garmin and other portables like Tom-Tom can save you money and do essentially the same thing. Yesterday I added Navigation to my Blackberry now with a Traffic Alert feature. Now I can keep from getting lost even when I’m walking. At my age I can’t waste time and it even helps me find a different route if the one I’m on is not doing well.

Consumer Recommendation:

Resource – www.safercar.gov

I suspect if you’ve read this far you know I’m impressed with this Honda Accord. I did test the Hybrid version as well as the Civic / Hybrid and these are wonderful cars. I could own this car but I can’t own all the cars I’ve liked over the past 16 years of testing. But the Honda has never disappointed me. This car is the top of the heap of all those listed below and is priced to make the decision easy. Don’t misunderstand me, all listed here are good cars but when I look at the beautiful styling I can’t help but fall in love. It has a great “bod”, nice lines, clean, silky smooth ride and comfortable to be with… the car as well as my Polish best friend. A Pole and Italian in a Japanese car. Isn’t America great?

Recognized Competition:

Honda Accord $20-31,000, Chevrolet Monte Carlo $21-28,000, Pontiac Grand Prix $22-29,000, VW Passat $24-38,000, Kia Optima $17-21,000.

2009 – Toyota Camry $19-29,000, Mitsubishi Galant $21-27,000, Hyundai Sonata $19-27,000, Chevrolet Malibu $21-26,000, Buick LaCrosse $25-33,000, Saturn Aura Hybrid $24,930, Saturn Aura $21-26,000, Pontiac G6 $20-31,000, Ford Fusion $19-25,000, Mercury Milan $20-26,000, Mercury Sable $24-31,000, Nissan Maxima $29-32,000, Subaru Legacy $21-35,000, Chevroldt Impala $23-30,000, Ford Taurus $24-31,000, Mazda 6 $19-28,000, Nissan Altima $20-29,000, Dodge Avenger $19-25,000, Nissan Altima Hybrid $26,650.

Good News:

This is a 10 for me in all respects Dudley Moore and it doesn’t talk back.

Bad News:

I had no complaints.

Standard Equipment:

2008 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring SUV (702)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2008 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring front wheel drive SUV. This is ‘hot’ but unfortunately not ‘green’. We keep getting pushed and pulled by the acknowledgment that we must do something to cut our travel budget but we like all the comfort and gadgets available in today’s cars.

This CX-9 has a couple of neat features I got used to really fast and then felt naked when they were not on the next test vehicle. The keyless entry smart card device is like so many fobs that allow you to keep the key in your pocket or purse and get in the car, start and drive the car and then stop, exit and lock the car without ever having to reach for the key (no actual key) fob.

One time however I drove several hundred miles thinking the key was in my pocket but someone had parked the car for me and put the keys on the windshield wiper recessed beneath the hood. If the key fob had blown out of fell through the engine compartment I would have had a problem.

The second fabulous feature is the Blind Spot Monitoring System. Now this is REALLY cool and the best innovation in a while and I wouldn’t buy the car without it because it is only $200.

General Info:

Parts – US/Canadian 10%, Japan 85%,

Assembly – Hiroshima, Japan

Class:  – Special Purpose

Cars: – CX-7, CX-9, Mazda 3, 5 & 6, Mazdaspeed3 & 6, MX-5 Miata, RX-8, Tribute, Tribute Hybrid & Truck.

Observation:

Since I have the opportunity to test all cars on a race track I’m acutely aware when some highway drivers insist on using our commuting lanes for their own personal raceway. High technology solutions are not far off to curtail dangerous driving habits of the few who display inconsiderate behavior at our peril. Soon satellite tracking will be able to sense erratic and dangerous drivers, ID them and suspend their drivers license. I’m not for George Orwell’s vision of big brother watching everything I do, or fail to do but the highways are public and some things we do in private are not appropriate to do in public. What can be done on the race track has no place on our highways.

An interesting phenomenon with the race drivers I have come to know well is that they have a great respect for public highways and simply do NOT do on our highways that which they routinely do on a race track for a living. They are the most polite drivers when they get off the job.

Handling & Performance:

Noticeably smooth acceleration and braking. I really like this car and it is powerful as well. And it has to be powerful to pull the two ton plus weight. Yes, that’s what makes it everything that it is – pretty, agile, 0-60 in just 7 seconds and lots of great features. But you can’t be thrilled with the fuel consumption in today’s fuel prices fast approaching world price for gas. You get what you pay for.

Styling:

Beautifully done. It is just smashing and I could own this car if I could justify the fuel sucking that pulls at my wallet. And let’s face it, no matter how pretty she is you get tired of being sucked dry.

Fit and Finish:

Excellent.

Cost:

A little pricey but a cool car to drive.

Features and Conveniences:

Blind Spot Monitoring System: Perhaps the most innovative adaptation in a long time is the sensors on the mirrors and audible sound when you click the turn signal. If there is a car in the intended lane change to close for a safe move you will see an icon on the mirror light up and a warning sound that the lane is occupied. Very smart. You gotta just love it. A side benefit is that it encourages you to signal before you turn. In fact it is absolutely addictive. You quickly begin to depend on the assist and confident feeling you get from that welcomed sound of impending doom if you fail to see blind spot traffic. And no matter how good the visibility is in any car there is always that nagging spot just off the rear bumper that can ruin your day.

Keyless entry smart card is a neat credit card size device that only needs to be on your person when you want to operate the car, but you need not take the device out of your pocket or purse.

Consumer Recommendation:

Resource – www.safercar.gov

Ok, if you and I were making tons of money selling global warming to others we too could afford to drive this gas guzzler. Know what I mean Al Gore? If this is your price range and fuel cost is not a consideration today or tomorrow this is a great crossover that easily equals or exceeds the best out there in class. As I said, I could own this car over most of the competition. It is today and it is state of the art in electronics. Test it and I think you’ll agree. On the other hand I would look first at more fuel efficient cars. But that’s me.

Recognized Competition:

Hyundai Veracruz $27-36,000, Mazda CX-9 $29-35,000, Cadillac SRX $38-45,000, GMC Envoy $28-37,000, Subaru Tribeca $30-34,000, Mercury Mountaineer $27-33,000, Infiniti FX $38-50,000, Mercedes M-Class $44-87,000,  Acura MDX $40-48,000, Nissan Murano $26-36,000, Saab 9-7X $40-46,000, Lincoln MKX $36-38,000, Jeep Grand Cherokee $29-43,000, BMW X5 $46-55,000, Lexus RX 350 $38-39,000, Volkswagen Touareg 2 $39-68,000.

Good News:

Handles well with smooth controls, comfortable, nice styling, quality finish and great feature innovation.

Bad News:

Poor fuel economy.

Standard Equipment:

3.7 liter 270 hp V6 engine, 6-speed automatic transmission, 20” Aluminum Alloy wheels, auto headlights, leather heated 8-way power front seats w/3 position memory, tilt & telescope leather wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise controls, power windows, front and side airbags, rear side air curtain air bags, stability control and traction control, vented 4-wheel anti lock disc brakes, fog lights, rain sensing wipers, heated power mirrors, Bluetooth hands free operation, 3-12 volt outlets, audio with CD player, climate control, 7 passenger seating, LATCH rear child safety anchors, tire pressure monitoring system, keyless entry smart card and anti-theft engine immobilizer.

2008 Hyundai Veracruz Limited (701)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2008 Hyundai Veracruz Limited. I’ve been testing Hyundai since they joined the market fight in the US. I’ve tested all of them now with this week’s test of the new Veracruz. It will surprise you. It did me, but it shouldn’t have since I had a good feeling about cars from Hyundai when I told my kids to look closely at the Santa Fe when I first tested it in 2003. And I’ve been happy with all models since then.

General Info:

Parts – US/Canadian 7%, Korea 80%, Transmission parts from Japan.

Assembly – Ulsan, Korea

Class:  – Special Purpose

Cars: – Accent, Azera, Elantra, Entourage, Santa Fe, Sonata, Tiburon, Tucson and Veracruz.

Observation:

World price of gas at the pump http://europe.theoildrum.com/node/2653 in June 2007 will put car buying decision into perspective. The majority of the world is paying from $4.00 to over $8.00 per gallon of gas. When will we ever learn that it is up to the consumer to make a change in the oil company’s attitude about building more refineries to lower the price of gas? They pushed us into cheap gas to get us hooked and then they stick it to us. Sounds like the Columbians learned from the oil companies. What’s your drug of choice? Seems to be oil for most of us. Count on gas going to world levels in the next year or two at the most. Be smart and make the change now.

Handling & Performance:

Handles as well as all the others I’ve tested in class but all are pitifully bad when it comes to fuel economy.

Styling:

Classy and nearly indistinguishable from the best – correction – oldest badges on the market. It is implied that because they are the oldest they are the best. Not necessarily true and Hyundai and other new comers are making that point clear. And they have an advantage because they are the underdog and we all know we tend to pull for the underdog.

Fit and Finish:

As good as the rest – generally.

Cost:

Veracruz is priced from a few to several thousand less than most of the competition but I’m sure Hyundai has not reached the level of acceptance by consumers to overlook the badges it is pitted against. When you’re spending this much money most folks would be willing to pop for a few thousand more and buy a Lexus or other brand that has been around much longer.

Features and Conveniences:

Some features can get away from you if you’re not careful. I pushed the close button on the power lift gate and it went down, but as I reached in my pocket for the key fob I must have pushed the lift gate button by mistake. Well, of course it lifted up and I thought there was an eerie open feeling when I looked in the rear view mirror and thought this thing has great visibility. I was lucky my computer didn’t fall out. They need to fix that glitch as it shouldn’t open or at least warn you that it is open while in a drive position.

Consumer Recommendation:

Resource – www.safercar.gov

Buy a fuel efficient car. Don’t wait until it’s too late.

Recognized Competition:

Hyundai Veracruz $27-36,000, Mazda CX-9 $29-35,000, Cadillac SRX $38-45,000, GMC Envoy $28-37,000, Subaru Tribeca $30-34,000, Mercury Mountaineer $27-33,000, Infiniti FX $38-50,000, Mercedes M-Class $44-87,000,  Acura MDX $40-48,000, Nissan Murano $26-36,000, Saab 9-7X $40-46,000, Lincoln MKX $36-38,000, Jeep Grand Cherokee $29-43,000, BMW X5 $46-55,000, Lexus RX 350 $38-39,000, Volkswagen Touareg 2 $39-68,000.

Good News:

Generally priced much better than competition.

Bad News:

Challenging longer established badges with greater prestige, equally as bad fuel economy as others in this class, so you may be buying a dinosaur as fuel prices soar.

Standard Equipment:

3.8 liter 260 horsepower V6 engine, 6-speed automatic transmission, front wheel drive, electronic stability control, traction control, anti locking brake force distribution system, front and side airbags, tire pressure system, backup warning system, climate control, power tilt and slide sunroof, audio with CD player and XM satellite, steering wheel audio controls, smart key system with alarm, power front seats, power tailgate, windows and locks, power mirrors, leather seating, power adjustable pedals, power steering wheel and driver memory settings.

2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata (700)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata that has grown up nicely over the past several years. It has always been one of my favorite little affordable sport cars. I always felt it to be a “chick” car and demographics tell us half of all Miata’s are owned by women.

Consumers, generally, give it a high rating for style which I believe is because it is middle of the road and safe. More radical lines are typical of all the other competitors noted below.

General Info:

Parts – US/Canadian 0%, Japan 95%

Assembly – Hiroshima, Japan

Class:  – two seat sport car.

Cars: – CX-7, CX-9, Mazda 3, 5 & 6, Mazdaspeed3 & 6, MX-5 Miata, RX-8, Tribute, Tribute Hybrid & Truck.

Assembly – Hiroshima, Japan I stood at Ground Zero in 1960 where the first A-Bomb was dropped. It was a moving experience and you can’t help but have compassion for these common folk irrespective of their governments attack on Pearl Harbor. No one wins in War … ok, so Japan won economically. Our tax dollars at work, eh?

Observation:

As gas prices rise you will see consumers avoiding travel to several stores to do their shopping and that is already apparent in the growth of Superstores where one stop shopping eliminates the need to jump from store to store. And since gas prices will NOT go down this trend will continue to be even more important. The only thing that can change this need to save on fuel will depend on some huge breakthroughs in new energy sources. Not likely in your lifetime. If you are inclined to bet ace’s, straights and cinches you will look closely at fuel consumption in everything you buy – and miles per gallon will be the overwhelming factor in your automobile decision making process.

Handling & Performance:

Men usually want heavier and more powerful performers but this MX-5 is no slouch. More importantly the raw power of a big V8 Vette, for example, gains little in the handling experience. Taking the curves in the Miata is quite good and was totally impressive as it hugged a mountain road testing course I like to use. It is not geared as well as it could be to compensate for the smaller engine and you’ll notice, as I did, that it runs at 3500 rpm more than it could.

If you want to cruise effortlessly at 1200 rpm quiet operation over those same mountain roads you’ll want to look at the Vette. Of course that is if double the money doesn’t bother you. If 4 second 0-60 performance is your thing, indeed the Vette is the answer and this MX-5 probably won’t be for you.

Styling:

Miata has been styled consistently and identifiably over the years. Simple but good enough to be copied by the likes of BMW.

Fit and Finish:

Mazda Miata is better every time I drive it. Early on it was a bit tinny but that is no longer the case, surely never truer than with this 2008 model.

Cost:

Mazda is beginning to push the price limits for the Miata in my opinion, but demand pushes price as much or more than increased cost of upgrading quality and features. I would have to say it is more a factor of acceptance of the consumer. And Mazda made a conscious decision NOT to ramp up the car to be more like the BMW Z4 or even the Honda S2000.

Features and Conveniences:

Improved much over the years, but with that has come a marked increase in selling price. There is a small trunk that is good for such a small car because of the smart storage of the top apart from the trunk space.

You’ll find limited convenient storage spaces which needs improvement to remove that frustration.

Consumer Recommendation:

Resource – www.safercar.gov

Some very interesting competitors that make this a tough decision, but the process is quite simple. Drive each if you’re in the market for a small car. If price is a major factor you’ll do well to limit your test driving to Miata, Sky, Solstice, Eclipse and New Beetle. All very nice. Sky and Solstice will be hard to beat and Beetle is separate and unique.

Recognized Competition:

Mazda MX-5 Miata $21-27,000, Audi TT $35-46,000, Nissan 350Z $29-41,000, Ford Mustang $20-32,000, Saturn Sky $26-31,000, Pontiac Solstice $22-32,000, MINI Cooper $18-25,000, Chrysler Crossfire $35-39,000, Mitsubishi Eclipse $20-28,000, Honda S2000 $34-37,000, Volkswagen New Beetle $17-26,000, Volkswagen Eos $29-38,000.

Good News:

Fun to drive.

Bad News:

A bit more pricy than I expected, pea-popper engine to some, road noisy enough to remove ability to use blue tooth hands free devices and loud running gear sounds.

Standard Equipment:

2.0 liter 166 horsepower I 4-cylinder engine, 6-speed manual transmission, rear wheel drive, 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, 17” aluminum alloy wheels, manual convertible top, glass rear window with defogger, fog lights, air conditioning, power windows and locks, heated leather seats, leather door trim and shift knob and steering wheel with tilt and audio controls, tire pressure monitoring system, anti theft alarm and engine immobilizer system, double wishbone suspension and rear multilink suspension, stabilizer bars, limited slip differential, power mirrors, Bose audio with 6 disc CD player, keyless entry, dual front and side airbags.
