2008 Mazda Tribute HEV 2-Wheel Drive SUV (699)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2008 Mazda Tribute HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) 2-Wheel Drive SUV. I guess if you have to own a Sport Utility Vehicle it is at least responsible to make it a Hybrid like this Mazda.

I’ve always liked to drive the little Miata MX-5 and although it appeared to me to be a “Chick” car, demographically it sells equally to both male and female. Ilona and I took one to Lake Tahoe for a week with family and we actually were able to close the trunk lid – but we left the hair dryer behind. Space is not a problem for this SUV however and you get even better fuel economy than the Miata. As with most hybrid’s the around town driving is better on fuel than open road driving, so the California Freeway parking lot system – compliments of CalTrans – will be more bearable. They really have this traffic thing figured out, don’t you think?

By the way – Big TIP – watch the movie (now on DVD) “The End of Suburbia” before you buy your next car or your next house. That movie will change your entire way of thinking about the auto, world oil, and where you want to live and what you want to be driving in the VERY near future.

I know Ford has a hand in the Mazda group but how much I don’t know. But I have found only good things come out of such influences, like the Daimler / Chrysler alliance for some time which has improved both brands.

The production of this Tribute Hybrid will be only 350 vehicles and sold in select areas of California.

2008 Ford Escape Hybrid They say “The Most Fuel-Efficient SUV on the Planet”

Observation:

Hey, CHP, isn’t it time you began to cite slow drivers on the freeway who insist on traveling in the wrong lane? It’s only fair, don’t you think?

Handling & Performance:

Switching from electric to gas is very seamless in operation. At low speed and low demand for power you are in silent running on battery up to 25 miles per hour. Very cool. So around town you will sense the reduced demand and drain on the gas tank. But you won’t notice a marked decrease in performance and power when you need it.

With a 15 gallon tank you’d get 450 miles or better. I like that.

Styling:

Rather plain and simple but for $8,000 more and lots more gas you can look at the very pretty CX-9 SUV from Mazda. Look out Lexus, BMW and Mercedes to name just a few. Those luxury SUVs are way more money and … that’s it, way more money. Well done Mazda, and congratulations for the awards this CX-9 has earned.

The Tribute and CX-9 have the same parents but with a different goal. The Tribute isn’t designed to be pretty, but rather to be economical and efficient. It has accomplished its goal. Kinda like the girl next door which I’ve always found to be the better option.

Fit and Finish:

Good.

Cost:

These days the cost of fuel has to be factored into your buying equation. Hybrid economy will play an increasing role in overall cost to own.

Features and Conveniences:

The nice thing about electric vehicles is they usually have 110 volt outlets. Cool. Now you can dry your hair while you put on your make up in the morning on the way to work. And they think cell phones are a distraction?!

2008 Hyundai Azera Limited (698)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2008 Hyundai Azera Limited. These Korean’s are beginning to amaze me. If they weren’t tainted by their Northern relatives there’s no telling how high they could climb up the ladder. South Korea, of course, is a perfect example of Capitalism in action. That alone is reason enough to support their efforts. The world is ever changing and it isn’t just us who are promoting their success. Their historical enemy, Japan, also has several of their cars assembled in Korea. What a turn of events, eh?

Just when I was going to say “it’s time for Americans to support American made products including automobiles”, I test drive this Korean made luxury car. To some, it is a contradiction in terms that a 3rd world country could or should produce a luxury car. But there it is, and it is entirely the product of that country. Impressive. “The gods must be Crazy”. Fun movie, by the way.

Observation:

Well it is becoming more confusing whether to drive or fly these days. Gas at nearly $4.00 a gallon prompts you to fly in many more cases. Then just when you made up your mind to do just that, the airline industry gets caught ignoring safety for profit. Ok, so they are falling like flies. Scary thought. It makes you want to drive all the more, in spite of the fact that it is still safer to fly. Well, in any case, I still hold to the guideline that if the trip is 500 miles or less – DRIVE. It is cheaper and faster and more convenient. And if you are traveling with one or more passengers all the better. Then you have a car when you get there. Another reason for driving can’t be ignored. It is a hassle getting through security.

And while I’m on that, remember the ABC expose that pointed out that airport security strip searches grandma and they take away her nail file that got picked up in the scan process. But according to the ABC News program, if she went through the line after midnight (after closing) she’d waltz through with guys carrying back packs, or with boxes on hand trucks while security snores in careless slumber. Are these airport security people nuts, or what? An idiot is smarter than they are!

Handling & Performance:

Excellent. A joy to drive.

Styling:

Outstanding, in my humble opinion.

Fit and Finish:

Easily as good as the competition – and don’t forget the competition has endorsed Korean car manufacturers by using them to build their cars as well.

Cost:

Impressive among some tough seasoned competition. These guys came to play.

Features and Conveniences:

You can’t help but be impressed with standard equipment included for the price. This car will surely surprise you. Why, because they are still the underdog and new kid on the block. They have to try harder; they do; and they are making inroads into the industry much faster than I ever expected.

Five years ago a Korean car would not be included in this class of cars. It demands that you also include it in your search for the family car. I’m sure you’ll be as impressed as I was. What’s more important is that you must know that when a product is looking for acceptance it is usually the best time to buy – if you’re willing to take the risk on the new kid. Me – I like it and I think it will be a reasonable risk and you’ll get a lot for your money. Another thing to consider is that US and Japanese car makers trust the Koreans to assemble their cars. If that isn’t a powerful endorsement I don’t know what is.

“An Automotive Love Affair”

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2008 Suzuki SX4 FWD crossover compact
commuter. It is also available in All Wheel Drive. And continuing with the
theme of fuel efficient commuters this was a nice move up from the Chevrolet
Aveo for more comfort and power. But the competition listed is very close
and demands you look closely at all of them if you can.

Opinion and observation:

I have to mention again that speed control is the best way to prevent
accidents. But not just keeping within 10 miles of the posted limit which is
common for highway driving, but maintaining a constant speed is more
important. If you have cruise control use it for freeway driving and don’t
worry that others will pass you. When many of us do hold to a constant safe
speed others will follow suit and everyone benefits with less stressful
driving and you’ll get there within 5 minutes of what you would accelerating
and braking so much more without it. Keep the rubber side down.

Handling & Performance:

It’s amazing what you get out of 143 horsepower and a more sophisticated
engine. Handling is comfortable and no complaints on the mountain road
courses.

Styling:

The crossover design is very popular so they have built in some of the best
of consumer demand coupled with very good fuel economy that is above the
average in class. It is heavier than many but none are beautiful. Most are
plain Jane and none really light my fire but their design is more for
functionality with wedge shapes that stretch out the corners with wide
stance wheel positioning that allows maximum interior space.

The cargo area on the SX4 is very good with a convenient wide opening hatch.

Fit and Finish:

Quite good.

Cost:

Retail price is better than the average of others in class.

Features and Conveniences:

Very good complement of features made possible from a rapidly decreasing
cost of electronics. 2008 is an improvement over the 07.

Consumer Recommendation:

This is a hot group of competitors that become more important with the bleak
possibility of gas prices rising to world levels over the next few years.
That level hovers around $7-8.00 a gallon. Look closely at the competition
and consider seriously one of these as a second car and dump the gas guzzler
you are probably driving now. I like the Toyota Yaris a lot, and have not
driven the Honda Fit or Aveo5 yet, but I have tested all the rest. You’ll
want to drive many if not all if you’ve decided to cut your transportation
fuel budget.

2008 Chevrolet Aveo LT 4-Door Sedan (696)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2008 Chevrolet Aveo LT 4-Door Sedan that is very affordable for a US built car. Good show Detroit… whoops, good show South Korea. Say what, South Korea? General Motors Chevrolet is being made in Korea? Our government talks about North Korea being one of the Axis of evil and US cars being made there. Seems like a contradiction in terms. But in a larger sense it is nice to see our industry is separate and apart from those political geniuses in Washington. Just kidding, of course, politicians are anything but geniuses.

Well I guess if Japan assembles some of its cars in Korea, Detroit needs to do the same to compete with lower production costs of Japanese competitors?

In all the good and the bad of all cars it is important to learn that not considering bragging rights these lower cost commuters are the smartest car purchases. You sacrifice little and gain much by not having to fork over 2-3 times the money to go to work every day.

And by the way the real world of tomorrow with gasoline prices of over $6.00 per gallon will be much easier to swallow if you have one of these gas stingy low cost cars. In fact, if you take this as seriously as I do, look closely at the Smart Car from Mercedes Benz.

Handling & Performance:

The Manual transmission gets a little better fuel economy at 27 City and 35 Hwy mpg and 87 octane fuel.

I found the steering to be a little too lose with a corresponding feel of the road that was too light for my taste. But the design seemed to be more aerodynamic than the actual results of less road hug than I like. However, it was more noticeable after my testing of the Cad CTS and Infiniti G series high end cars over the prior few weeks. I still hadn’t come down off that high. And as a commuter those cars were poor performers compared to this Aveo.

On the plus side I fount it to be very well geared across the entire speed spectrum.

Styling:

Plain Jane… but functional and a good inexpensive commuter. The interior is clean, neat and plastic as you might expect as I did. I wasn’t disappointed.

Fit and Finish:

Just when I was about to blame Detroit for assembly I noticed South Korea was responsible. Oh well, I suspect when wages fall in the US to more worldly levels we’ll be making cars in the US again. I expect further those factories will be right next door to buggy whip makers and harnesses for the horses we’ll need to use for economical transportation. Actually I’d rather like to try the simpler life of by-gone years, wouldn’t you?

Cost:

Sinfully low… it reminds me of the Geo Metro years not so long ago. Cars seem to go in and out of style quickly because of sagging sales performance, but in today’s world you can bet cars like this Chevy Aveo will rebound big time with 40-50 mpg fuel economy. You do the math and after paying $12 grand for the car you’ll have just enough to pay the rising taxes to cover irresponsible government spending and waste.

Features and Conveniences:

In addition to a good array of features mpg is the greatest feature, and it becomes more important with every barrel of oil brought in from the Middle Eastern Sheiks. (Can anyone tell me when are we going to drill our own oil, lower the pump price in America so Korea and China can have enough Arab oil to produce our low cost cars)?

“An Automotive Love Affair”

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2008 Nissan Frontier 4X2 Nismo Pick up truck.
My motorcycle riding 13 year old grandson said, “Wow, Cool, I want one of
those. That would be perfect for hauling my motorcycle.”

Perhaps that is the best testimony for cars of the future. It is our youth
who will be buying the cars in the coming years. And it would appear car
makers are playing into the wants and wishes of young people who influence
buying even today before they are old enough to buy one themselves.

Observation:

Letters to the editor about your opinion do matter. Years ago I sent a
letter to the editor of a Los Angeles area newspaper about my outrage at the
Gestapo tactics in a traffic sting operation in South Pasadena. My neighbor,
a Pasadena police officer got very angry that I referred to the police as
the Gestapo. I guess that’s the price of giving your opinion.

Handling & Performance:

A road less traveled is the Angeles Crest Highway were I do a lot of my test
driving. It really does highlight the handling characteristics of every car
and since it is on the same road I get a very comparative look at each
vehicle I drive.

Surely the 261 horsepower of this Frontier is more than adequate to pull the
grades comfortably and the handling of pickup trucks just seems to get
better all the time. With 4-wheel ABS disc brakes, limited slip technology
and independent suspension it isn’t like daddy’s pickup. This pickup is more
car-like in handling than a truck so it was a delight on the mountain
roadway. Of course the freeway was even better.

Styling:

Well, the kids loved it. And really so did I. I like the sporty and rugged
look. And interior is very car-like as well, and it shares a lot of features
from the more expensive and rugged Titan.

Fit and Finish:

Better than many, including other Japanese products, well known for their
attention to detail.

Cost:

As equipped (standard) the MSRP is a good value.

Features and Conveniences:

I find the cargo tie down devices included as standard equipment listed as
High Utility Bed Package has a super convenient “channel System” with
adjustable tie down cleats. I’ve used them before on the Titan and recommend
them even if they are not provided as standard equipment on the truck you
eventually buy. And of course the Factory applied spray on bed liner is a
big plus as well.

2008 Infiniti G35 AWD Sedan (694)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2008 Infiniti G35 AWD sedan. I really enjoyed the G37 sporty version better, but if I were in need of a more functional back seat this would appeal to me more. For one, you sacrifice very little in performance and get 4-door convenience for less money.

Some say the badge is not up to other luxury cars but I disagree. Over the years I’ve found Infiniti to be as good as the competition it goes head to head with.

General Info:

Class: – Midsize cars.

Cars: – EX, FX, G35, G37, M and QX56.

Handling & Performance:

Performance wise this sedan is close to the G37 and of course a better all around car. The G37 provided a bit more hair raising speed but not as wild and crazy as the Corvette Z’s for example. If I need to get my heart started the Vette is the “E” ticket ride. But the G35 is still impressive with 0-60 in about 5.4 seconds.

It provides a confident handling feel and thus not only encourages spirited driving, it makes the whole driving experience more comfortable. Hard to place a value on that but I find it indispensable when comparing all the cars I drive. I have come to consider that a major element in the buying decision for me. We all spend entirely too much time in our cars so it may as well be a pleasant experience.

That reminds me, I need to look into one of those new comfortable mattresses that I slept in at a hotel in Vancouver, Washington recently.

Styling:

Generally the lines of the G35 follow those of the sport coupe G37 – which is a good thing.

Fit and Finish:

Infiniti quality is evident the first time you sit inside and your senses are aroused by the attention to detail and the overall look and feel.

Cost:

The competition is brutally capable but the G35 is in the hunt with correct pricing for the crowd.

Features and Conveniences:

Very good standard equipment package.

Consumer Recommendation:

This is one of the most closely matched groups of cars I’ve seen in a good long time. Virtually each one lights my fire. I’m particularly drawn to the Cad CTS; I love that car. I believe the final decision for most if you drove them all would still come down to personal preference and experience with a specific brand. My experience owning a foreign car repair facility for many years colors my thinking I must admit. Audi and BMW were expensive repair nightmares; Chrysler also used to have quality issues; Volvo and Saab are quality conscious but boring (to me). The German cars generally are all expensive to maintain and repair. So the CTS continues to come out on top for me because I have owned eight Cadillac’s over the years and always had good experience with cost to benefit. Good luck in your search; this one will be a tough decision.

2008 Infiniti G37 Coupe Journey (693)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2008 Infiniti G37 Coupe Journey. The all-new 2008 Infiniti G37 is also available in Coupe and Coupe Sport 6MT. Powered by a larger and more powerful 3.7-liter 330-horsepower engine that produces 270 lb-ft of torque, the G37 is lower, longer and wider than its predecessor. Observation:

We often hear negative things about the auto industry but it really takes a bad rap. Car salesmen are untrustworthy, many would echo, dealer repair is a rip off, etc. all the way to the top where salaries are way too high. But these same folks are the salt of the earth, grass roots people and average Americans as well. Now, if you’re interested in the really bad people look to companies in the news like Enron and Bear Sterns.

In any case, when you’re a Goliath you attract a lot of attention. But you know what; unlike the brokerage houses car makers ACTUALLY make a product. And as bad as they seem sometimes you need to consider the car you’re driving. Pretty fantastic, eh? Also consider all the small businesses they support – Thanks, GM, Chrysler and Ford. Consider all the mom and pop aftermarket businesses that have been spawned and sprout up over night because of the car. And finally, consider they have done it for the past 100 years.

Handling & Performance:

If you don’t like to feel the road you won’t like the ride in this G37, but you can’t NOT like the power, acceleration and handling characteristics of this car. I like the feel much better than the BMW (especially the 3-series that competes directly with this G37).

I knew this was a special performer the minute I drove it for the first time. Then when on the Crest Test some wise ass didn’t like that I passed him / her and hot on my tail after speeding up significantly faster than before my pass. So I left that one in my dust with much more performance than either of us expected. When you’re the new kid on the block everyone must challenge you. Guess I would have done that too as I was growing up IN HIGH SCHOOL… Sorry didn’t mean to yell.

If paddle shifters, tiptronic or manual auto shift (whatever you care to call it) is your thing the Infiniti guys finally got it right with long enough paddles for effective use. That was most noticeable in the mountains where lots of turns in the middle shifting can be distracting in many other applications. Nice touch and kudos to Nissan.

Styling:

Sometimes you gotta wonder what these design folks are thinking when they design anything. That’s the first thing I thought when I sat in the car, closed the door and then proceeded to adjust my seat. I was frustrated by the fact my hand wouldn’t fit between the door and the controls. Huh? What’s this all about? I had to open the door to adjust the seat settings.

Friend Merkel asked me just yesterday, “Don’t these guys drive the cars before they put them out for sale?” I’ve thought that same thing often and wonder why they don’t have us test them BEFORE they actually pump them out like cookies. Go figure.

Fit and Finish:

Outstanding.

Cost:

Priced about 5 grand less than the 3-series BMW similarly equipped. Now that’s aggressive sales.

Features and Conveniences:

More than you need and just enough in today’s world. Today it is arguable that you need traffic warning alerts, lane monitors that beep at you when you drift into the next lane and laser sensors that keep you from getting too close to the car in front of you with intelligent cruise control.

Hey, before you know it these smart cars will be driving themselves and we’ll just be along for the ride.

Consumer Recommendation:

If you’re looking at BMW in particular, you’ll want to test drive this Infiniti coupe. Very nice and I prefer it over the German options.

2008 Cadillac CTS (692)

Overview:

This week I have to tell you how much I enjoy driving Cadillac products. We’re looking at the 2008 Cadillac CTS which is one of my favorite of all cars. However I did find a little annoyance with the radio that was not as intuitive as I would expect. GM must be looking to the German cars instead of the Japanese makes for ideas of what people like. But they’ve done such a great job in design they should use their own judgment on electronics, or at least look to the Japanese for simple use of gadgets and creature comforts. The Germans simply do a lousy job in this area as they overcomplicate everything.

Since 2003 this car has been a top seller for Cad and by all indications it will continue to impress all car lovers. This is one dynamite car for all seasons and any reasons you can imagine. You’ve gotta fall in love with this Cadillac. Thanks GM and Bravo.

Observation:

I have a question; are people who buy Cadillac’s and other luxury cars more intelligent than others? I asked that because only those cars seem to have automatic one touch up and down Windows. And conversely less elegant cars seldom have automatic up-and-down window features. Are they afraid people who buy average cars are less responsible and will hurt themselves in those automatic windows? Okay, so those window switches are a tad more expensive but that doesn’t totally explain or answer my question.

Handling & Performance:

Unbelievably agile and athletic, some would say. Test drive it and you too will be blown away. Rear wheel drive makes this a very well-balanced car without too much weight on the front end.

Styling:

I love what they have done with the Cadillac design and it remains consistent since 2003. The sharp edges and pronounced lines are simply beautifully done. Inside, the elegant wood trim, wood accented steering wheel, and shift knob are subtle touches of class Along with the analog clock in the middle of it all. Another nice touch is the stitching on the leather textured dash.

Quite frankly it is a testimony to the fact that the most beautiful and capable cars can indeed come from American carmakers. They appeal to so many people around the world because America is made up of so many people from around the world.

Fit and Finish:

Outstanding!

Cost:

Not bad for what you get.

Features and Conveniences:

There are all the gadgets and goodies that you can want on automobile and arguably more expensive than they should be. The options packages are very, very cool. I particularly liked the fact that when I was running low on fuel the system would ask if you wanted to find the nearest gasoline station and then it would give you directions to the one of your choice.

Consumer Recommendation:

If the styling and design of this car makes it one of your dream cars and you haven’t yet driven the automobile that experience will make up your mind for you.

2008 Honda Accord 4-Door EX (691)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2008 Honda Accord. Completely redesigned for 2008, and offered in both sedan and coupe versions, but the coupe, of course, has more aggressive and emotional styling to differentiate it from the sedan. The Accord was first sold in the U.S. in 1976 as a compact car and has grown larger and more luxurious, moving into the midsize category in 1998. Remember the Civic that preceded the Accord? That was a pea popper so this Accord was much awaited for and the first breakthrough in reasonable size for US consumption in the 1960s and 1970s.

The good news about the Accord is that I found myself comparing it to the Infiniti M45 I had just tested at about double the money of the Accord. I had to keep coming back to that fact and remember the Accord shouldn’t even compare with the Infiniti, but it did. Yes I did miss all the high tech gadgets on the M45 but it didn’t take long to adjust to not having them. All the while I couldn’t shake off the reality that this car is not only good looking it is socially responsible.

If I were spending your money I’d buy a Ferrari, but since it’s my money I’ll pop for the Accord passenger car.

Observation:

On the Crest from the high desert to the LA basin I find a great opportunity to observe the public going to work by a ‘road less traveled’ as most desert dwellers go around the mountain. I note that about 500 cars per hour traverse that 35 mile stretch from California 14 to the 210 freeway in La Canada. There is little doubt this piece of highway is potentially treacherous but drivers hone their driving skills each day to avoid the brutal trek around the mountain that adds much time, gas and miles on the car.

I chatted with a young man who had just been cited for speed by a CHP motorcycle officer. The young man went by me as I pulled to the right lane for slower traffic and it all seemed safe and without erratic movement or great speed – “Thank you for your opinion”, said the woman on the other end of the phone line at the CHP office in Pasadena. I had called out that officer as making a bad stop and citation. I said I’d like to appear on behalf of that young man who was cited unfairly and she hung up on me. So much for “public servants”. Guess she didn’t like talking to the press. So much for justice and the American way. If you care to know who the “Napoleonic officer” is send me an email.

Handling & Performance:

Very comfortable ride and my first impression was that the difference in ride feel and quality was nearly imperceptible from the Infiniti. I also did not want for power from the 190 horse Accord. I have to admit I enjoyed double the horsepower performance from the M45 but you can live without it – trust me – and you’ll save on fuel cost too.

Styling:

Nice clean lines. You gotta love this sedan. By the way, did you ever wonder what the designer looks like who crafted an UGLY car?

Fit and Finish:

Very good. Not exceptional, but very good.

Cost:

As equipped this is under $24,000 and for the ride and safety features built in it is in the top 3 of the listing below. Then there is the cost to operate and as the price of gas pushes up to nearly $4.00 per gallon I like the Accord even more.

Features and Conveniences:

Standard equipment is good, but austere by luxury car standards. But you get what you pay for and after testing the super equipped Infiniti M45 for at least $20,000 more I could live just fine without almost all of it.

Consumer Recommendation:

I found I would own this Honda-car after consideration for my general need at this time in my life. I’d buy a good inexpensive Nav system and be a happy camper. The only option would be to consider the Hybrid version. But for the money difference between this Honda Accord and other higher priced classes the cost savings is pretty compelling that it would be better to put a down payment on that second home.

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2008 Infiniti M45 Sedan and it is a very streetwise car that is easy to get used to even if the payment would be tough to take for most of us. But I have to tell you all the neat toys will suck you in. Like what’s not to fall in love with – the Keyless fob in your pocket or purse and you press a small button on the door handle to open the doors, and then start the car with the fob still in your pocket or purse. Or could it be the other 21^st century gadgets like satellite traffic alerts, cruise control with a distance sensor to monitor the car in front of you so it can apply the brakes or accelerator to maintain a pre-set speed. Another new innovation is a sensor to detect drift from lane to lane. Clearly it won’t be long before our cars drive themselves and we’ll just be along for the ride.

Although the Navigation system is very nice, I still think I would buy a portable Garmin for much less money. On the other hand, the tire monitor is best purchased as optional equipment if it is not standard, especially with the very popular low profile tires. It doesn’t take much to peal them right off the rims if they are run low. By the way, aftermarket tire monitor systems are available.

In short, people who must have the latest and greatest electronic wizardry will buy this Infiniti M45.
