2008 Kia Sorento EX 4X4

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2008 Kia Sorento EX 4X4 SUV. I could find no real difference between cars in this class. The only drawback is the badge, and then only a problem for some. It’s a Kia and some folks are anxious to spend more money to impress their friends. I mean like really, why do we need a BMW, or a Lexus badge? Does it make us more important or more successful? And if I were on the hunt for chicks I wouldn’t stop with a BMW – I would go back to the Porsche or Lamborghini I drove in my younger days. Brother John made a statement with his Daytona Ferrari.

Moral of the story is drive the car that fits your need, want, wish or dream. Live it! And if you don’t care about all that – buy the Kia and go on a European cruise with the money you save. Venice is nice this time of year. Take a friend or your wife/husband if you friend can’t make it.

General Info:

Parts –  US/Canadian 4%, Korea 86%

Assembly – Korea

Class:  – SUV

Cars: – Amanti, Borego, Optima, Rio, Rondo, Sedona, Sorento, Spectra & Sportage.

Handling & Performance:

Estimated fuel cost is not stellar at an average annual cost of $2,470 based on 15,000 miles at $2.80 per gallon. I suspect gas prices are going back there, so now’s the time to take that into consideration.

Styling:

Pretty standard… yeah but that’s the point. This is a Kia from Korea! Why don’t they look like Asian cars? Why do they look so American? Are we really the last word in design? Should we be? I for one would like to see some original thoughts and ideas and not just a clone of what American car companies think cars should look like. These are just “Knock-Offs” of what the US invented. Isn’t that illegal like my friends Rolex watch for $100 that looks and feels “EXACTLY” like the real thing for over $5,000?

Fit and Finish:

Not too bad for the money and better than some at much more money.

Cost:

Competitively priced in this class.

Conveniences and comfort:

Kia has included all the things I would expect for the money.

Consumer Recommendation:

You can’t ignore the cost savings of a product built in such a favorable labor market. Take a look – it will be worth your time and consideration.

Recognized Competition:

Kia Sorento $21-27,000, Isuzu Ascender $27-29,000, Hummer H3 $33-43,000, Saturn Vue $23-31,000, Saturn Outlook $31-36,000, Mercury Mariner $23-28,000, Mercury Mountaineer $29-35,000, Toyota RAV4 $22-28,000, Chevrolet Equinox $24-31,000, Mazda CX-7 $24-28,000, Mazda Tribute $20-28,000, Honda CR-V $21-29,000, Ford Escape $20-28,000, Ford Edge $27-36,000, Mitsubishi Outlander $20-26,000, Jeep Liberty $23-27,000, Dodge Durango $28-40,000, Dodge Nitro $22-29,000.

Good News:

Looks like, feels like, and drives like the competition and for less money. If you can get past the badge it will service your need for less.

Bad News:

Image may be a problem for some.

Standard Equipment:

3.8 liter 262 hp V6 engine, 5-speed auto trans, 4-wheel drive, 4-wheel ABS power disc brakes, power rack & pinion steering, front airbags with driver knee airbag and full length side curtain airbags, electronic stability control, traction control, tire pressure monitoring system, air conditioning, power windows locks and mirrors, audio with steering wheel controls & CD/MP3, 8-way power driver seat with lumbar support, 60/40 split folding rear seats with armrest, remote keyless entry, leather steering wheel with tilt, trip computer with compass & temperature, rear cargo cover & tie downs and under floor storage, lift gate with flip up glass, defroster, wiper washer, roof rails, fog lights, privacy glass, underbody skid plates, full size alloy spare, trailer hitch wiring with sub-harness connector.

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer ES 4-door sedan

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer ES 4-door sedan. The overall feeling is that for the money it is a well rounded sedan.

Models available included a DE at $14K, ES at $16k and the GTS at under $18K all with 2 liter 152 hp engines. It is an advanced technology engine that includes variable valve timing found on more expensive engines and it and the transmission is warranted for 10 years or 100,000 miles.

General Info:

Parts – Japan 100%

Assembly – Mizushima, Japan

Class:  – SubCompact

Cars: – Eclipse, Endeavor, Galant, Lancer, Outlander and Raider.

Observation:

What’s this thing about car owners putting black out on their cars windows? Is it legal? I don’t like being behind a tall truck or SUV when I’m not in a large vehicle. Likewise I don’t like being behind a coupe or sedan with blacked out rear windows for the same reason… it limits my view through the car to traffic in front of it. I really don’t care who is in the car but I am put at greater risk of rear end collision when I can’t see traffic ahead. So I have to change lanes or go around that vehicle.

Handling & Performance:

Better than average handling and feel on the Crest test mountain course. The engine is responsive with 0-60 mph at 8.66 seconds. More importantly it negotiated the curves like a pro and I felt in control and safe. Drivers will appreciate the manual transmission but if you prefer an automatic is available as an option on all models.

Styling:

Aggressive.

Fit and Finish:

Very good.

Cost:

Very good for a 4-door roomy sedan and a decent array of standard features.

Conveniences and comfort:

The armrest is a bit low and more flimsy than I’d expect even at this price car. If you don’t like high trunk openings this will be a negative for you.

Consumer Recommendation:

A decent family sedan that is roomy and is a 5 passenger vehicle. The trunk is fairly large and styling is nice for any destination. And you won’t break the bank. It is among a good crowd of competitors so the good news is there are many choices; the bad news is you need to look at a lot of them because there are several good ones. Don’t leave the made in America Saturn and Chevrolet. Both real solid contenders.

Recognized Competition:

Mitsubishi Lancer $14-18,000, Saturn Ion $12-20,000, Suzuki Aerio $14-17,000, Subaru Impreza $18-33,000, Nissan Sentra $15-20,000, Volkswagen Jetta $17-23,000, Scion tC $17,000, Mazda 3 $14-20,000, Chevrolet Cobalt $14-19,000, Toyota Corolla $14-16,000, Honda Civic $15-25,000, Hyundai Elantra $14-16,000.

Good News:

Nice styling, nice ride, roomy, good size trunk and only 87 octane fuel required.

Bad News:

High trunk opening, general resale is not as good as more popular Japanese names like Toyota and Nissan.

Standard Equipment:

2.0 liter Inline 4-cylinder 152 hp engine, 5-speed manual transmission, front and side air bags and side curtain airbags and driver knee airbag, front crumple zones, child safety locks, and latch system for child seats, tire pressure monitoring system, daytime running lights, engine immobilizer with anti-theft alarm system, power steering, 4-wheel power ABS disc brakes with EBD – electronic brake distribution, front and rear stabilizer bars, air conditioning, steering wheel mounted cruise control and audio switches, height adjustable steering column,  6-way driver adjustable seat, 60/40split fold down rear seatback with center armrest, power windows, locks and mirrors, variable wipers, remote keyless entry, auto halogen headlights and 16” alloy wheels.

Options: Sun and sound package includes 650 watt Rockford-Fosgate punch sound system with 9 speakers, SIRIUS satellite radio with 6-months included and power glass sunroof ($1,500).

2008 Scion xD 5-door Wagon

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2008 ‘Preproduction’ Scion xD 5-door subcompact Wagon that replaces the xA. It should be available in showrooms early this fall and is worth looking at. It is a big improvement over the prior xA and others that were flat ‘ugly’. If I were a mother I wouldn’t claim it as my child – know what I mean – drop it at the dog shelter and forget to reclaim it. But finally, with the ‘08 release of the xD, it begins to look like a normal child.

Friend Merkel, my automotive engineer friend, notes that a new wave of interest in “Green” sensitive cars are becoming popular even in super rich communities where top of the line Mercedes, Lexus, BMW and the like were standard fare for those folks.

One has to wonder if it isn’t the new approach to flaunting wealth since they can have any car they want to drive but are becoming more conscious of waste in general that contributes to Global Warming. Me – I don’t believe in that global warming pitch from the likes of Al Gore. I think they have other agenda’s and aren’t really honest. I believe that because there are just as many scientists that insist our contribution to atmospheric problems is so miniscule as to be laughable. Stephen E. Blewett, Phd from Cal Tech, and Stanford undergrad work wrote “The Ozone Myth” that made sense to me.

Anyway I hope those Prius buyers in Palos Verdes and other upscale communities don’t believe my views and continue to buy “Green” in record numbers. Hey, what could it hurt and it would likely make us less dependent on Middle East oil. That will allow those OPEC countries to sell to China with its voracious appetite for oil at this singular time in history.

General Info:

Parts – n/a

Assembly – Japan

Class:  – Subcompact Cars

Cars: – Scion tC, xB and xD.

Handling & Performance:

The new 2008 finally sports a bit more horsepower at 128 versus 103 from the previous 4-cylinder. But you do sacrifice a few miles per gallon in a time when 10% decrease compounded with a rising cost of fuel becomes more significant to many. However you’ll need to consider part of the drop results from new government EPA mileage calculations.

Make no mistake however this rides nice but is not for the guy or gal who loves to drive and place a lot of value on performance. This is a basic commuter and it does that just fine. You just won’t expect to get all excited to get out and ‘drive’.

Styling:

The xD looks new and improved but it also sits on a new platform this year – the Camry. Thus it is heavier, has a larger engine and adds more safety features.

Fit and Finish:

Well, this is a $15,000 car so you wouldn’t expect Lexus or Toyota brand high end price and quality. But you would expect better than average assembly that is consistent with the brand generally – and you wouldn’t be disappointed.

Cost:

Affordable is a terrible word because it tells you it isn’t expensive or to others that it is cheap without the ‘tramp stamp’. But it is targeted at the youthful driver in style and affordability.

Conveniences and comfort:

Quite good frankly for the price but the real good stuff like traction control and Vehicle Stability Control are optional.

Consumer Recommendation:

If you want more fuel economy and about the same space and power consider another Toyota product. The Yaris S is worthy of comparison even if lower priced.

Recognized Competition:

Scion xD $15,350,  VW Rabbit $15-17,000, Ford Focus $14-17,000, Chevrolet Aveo5 $10-13,000, Honda Fit $14-16,000, Dodge Caliber $14-20,000, Toyota Yaris $11-14,000, Hyundai Accent $10-14,000, Nissan Versa $13-15,000, Suzuki SX4 $15-16,000, Kia Rio5 $13,750.

Good News:

Improved design that is a real face lift, good fuel economy, 25 more horsepower than prior year and it’s a Toyota product which will influence a lot of people.

Bad News:

Sun visors don’t extend, low horsepower will strain on the hills, …for Scion is the fact there is a lot of great competition and therefore it will make your purchase decision more difficult.

Standard Equipment:

1.8 liter 128 horsepower inline 4-cylinder engine, 4-speed auto trans, front wheel drive, air conditioning, cruise control, front air bags, front side airbags with front and rear side curtain airbags, front bucket seats, 60/40 split folding reclining rear seat, intermittent wiper, 4-wheel ABS Electronic Brake Distribution brake system with brake assist, halogen headlights, audio system with CD, iPod compatibility, six speakers, power door locks, outside mirrors with turn signal, power windows with one touch driver side, rear window defogger, rear wiper, remote keyless entry, tilt steering wheel with audio controls, tire pressure monitor system. Optional: VSC – Vehicle Stability Control and Traction control.

2008 Smart Car fortwo Cabriolet

Overview:

This week you’re going to be amazed by a new car to the US but one that has been sold in 36 countries for the last 10 years. The Smart Car or Smart fortwo is sure to be a repeat of the 1960s love affair with the VW Beetle/ Bug that should sweep the country like a fire storm.

Whether you consider buying one of the three models – the Pure, the Passion or the Cabriolet you’ll be fascinated and I believe shocked that something this small can seem so big. While attending the very first introduction in the US of this smart addition to the cars we can drive today I went from major skeptic to a born again believer about this wonderfully designed two seater cars. Really, you have to check it out. On line you can go to www.smartusa.com and learn more about this little marvel.

Look for the $99 reservation option and the car will begin delivery in January.

Trust me; this will be the surprise of the century for efficient and responsible cars in the coming years until the fuel cell car is ready for our consumption. GM will head up that push for the newest. Then when they have developed it the Japanese and Germans can copy it. Thanks to American ingenuity our car makers will launch us into the future of transportation. In the meantime these more conventional modes of transportation will have to do and be all the rage.

These are the hottest thing in Europe in particular and the Romans have gobbled up over 50,000 of them to date, partly because you can park two of them in a standard parking space in the US.

General Info:

Parts – n/a

Assembly – France

Class:  – Economy

Car Models: – Pure, Passion & Cabriolet

Handling & Performance:

All the things I thought were sure to be all wrong with this little car I was convinced by the German engineers how they have adjusted to and solved the problems like ‘roll over’ concerns. The height of the car stayed the same but they widened the track from early versions to provide more stability.

Friend Merkel is still concerned with high speed on the freeway travel. But after I tested this car at speeds of 70 mph I was satisfied I’d feel comfortable driving the freeways in most metropolitan cities. Why, because you seldom have the chance to go that fast.

The European version is diesel powered and gets over 70 mpg. The US version required a gas engine and promises 35-45 mpg. They suspect the next power plant will be a hybrid since we are unlikely to see clean diesel any time soon in the US. For the rest of the world they’ll enjoy even more low cost transportation.

Styling:

Simple while complex. The engine is a modular design and with four bolts the entire module drops down for service. All fluids are maintained from a front access panel where you’d expect to see the hood.

The design was the product of Mercedes Benz in Irvine California about a decade ago, so Smart marketing people plug the fact this car is finally coming home.

There was a Smart for four but it didn’t make money and was discontinued along with a sport car adaptation.

Fit and Finish:

Well done.

Cost:

The Pure is priced at $11,590, the Passion starts at $13,590 and the Cabriolet begins at $16,590. The Smart fortwo will be sold 2/3 through attached but not an integral part of Mercedes Benz dealerships. 1/3 will be stand alone dealerships connected with Penske.

Conveniences and comfort:

The Cabriolet convertible top is unique in that you can put it down and up at any speed.

Consumer Recommendation:

You can go on line at www.smartusa.com and for $99 you can reserve yours. When you are able to test drive it, the tall folks will be amazed at how it accommodates most of us.  You may want to consider as I have to buy one for those short trips around town to the market, shopping or the hardware store, etc.

Some may want to buy one for the kids – Christmas, anniversaries at a cost less than a motorcycle.

Competition:

Well there is no competition really but the closest car would be the Mini Cooper

$18-25,000, which is a 1.6 liter 4 cylinder engine that promises 30-40 miles per gallon.

Good News:

Low cost to buy and operate. Ample cargo area for two to travel, shop etc.

Bad News:

Seating for two only, travel under 70 mph.

Standard Equipment:

1 liter 3-cylinder engine, 5 speed auto trans with manual shift (no clutch) operation, 15” steel wheels, fold flat passenger seat, radio ready (radio is standard on other models), dual air bags front and side, electronic stability program, ABS brake system with Elect. Brake force distribution, child tether system, remote keyless entry, front and rear washer wiper with defroster, electric tailgate release and more.

Note: some optional items are offered that won’t add a lot for the conveniences you may want even on the base model.

2008 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 4X4

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2008 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 4X4. Cars evoke images from the past and this Wrangler lights up a couple of those memories. I recall advertisements featuring a Pamela Anderson looking gal in a T-Shirt, rock climbing shorts and wind blown hair with that natural beauty and no make up. By the way I have news for the ladies – men don’t like make up on the woman of their dreams. The second vision for me is the Mohawk Trail in North West Massachusetts where Ilona and I enjoyed the company of 100 plus enthusiastic Jeep owners and 18 folks from the press for a Jeep Jamboree.

Ok, so those aren’t the only reasons to own a Jeep, but I can’t think of better ones. Jeeps attract a kind of cult following of people with much in common. They are out of doors folks who like to brave the elements and live on the edge. These are really cool people and the range of ages is as wide as the rivers they cross in their beloved Jeeps. You can imagine them rock climbing, bungee jumping, flying a plane over the Rockies, surfing on a quiet beach at sun down not needing to impress others. These are self assured confident people and they include guys and gals that are likely professional suits during the week on Wall Street or down town LA or Seattle or anywhere USA.

I’ll bet you have similar images that conjure up the concept of “Gusto” – “You only go around once” or a Nike ad suggesting – “Just do it”. To me a car is transportation and a Jeep is an adventure. Not advertising hype but how I feel, and ‘that’s the truth’ … Lily Tomlin.

The really good news is that you don’t have to spend Rambo bucks for a Hummer to do the same things off road that the Jeep will do. Fact of the matter is you can go more places in a Jeep than you can in a Hum Vee, except Iraq I guess. On the Mohawk Trail there were places a Hummer was simply to wide to go through trees for example. Horse and buggies likely cut those trails hundreds of years ago. Hummers are more at home on Sahara Desert type venues.

If you are inclined to the rough and rugged life and decide to buy a Jeep you surely should attend a Jamboree. There are 26 venues and range from 1-10 in difficulty, 10 being the most difficult. That would be the Rubicon Trail in the Lake Tahoe, California area of America. The Jeep Rubicon and the massive boulders of the Rubicon Trail which you will climb are both made in America.

In the 1960s Japan named a city USA (Ooosa) so they could stamp products “Made in USA”. Why that is important is the lengths to which offshore competition will go to gain acceptance in the huge US market. Made in Japan has a whole different meaning today. World market manufacturing like China for example labor costs are about a buck an hour. No wonder why so many things are made there.

The problem created is a huge balance of trade that puts the US in harms way. It has topped $900 billion annually. Otherwise there is no problem since it is simply the free market working as it should. If you don’t agree, buy cars made in America.

General Info:

Parts – US/Canadian 69%, Mexico 15%

Assembly – Toledo, Ohio, USA.

Class:  –  Sport Utilities

Cars: – Commander, Compass, Grand Cherokee, Liberty, Patriot and Wrangler.

1941 Chrysler Thunderbolt

Jeep is a Classic Car they still make.

Handling & Performance:

Like most everything else except sex, cars are even better than the older models I joined on our trek over the Mohawk Trail. There were Jeeps from World War II to current day Jeeps. If you are a Jeep owner contact Jeep to attend one of 26 places to enjoy you Jeep and be amazed at what a Jeep can really do off road.

American car makers are slowly adopting European engine designs that get so much more horsepower per liter. The Jeep engine is a 3.8 liter V6 and only develops 202 horsepower. So you have less hp and burn more fuel than comparable European engines.

Styling:

The same yesterday, today and hopefully tomorrow.

Fit and Finish:

Basic, rugged and unfinished (by Lexus standards), but that’s the way it is supposed to be.

Cost:

More than I thought they should be, but inflation and popularity has pushed the price up. And perhaps it has something to do with the professionals who buy them or simply a growing number of people returning to their pioneer roots.

Conveniences and comfort:

They used to have manually operated roll up windows but the power is ok and the radio and the air conditioning and the power steering… and, well you know what I mean.

Consumer Recommendation:

When you’re not climbing Mt. Rainer or one of the many over 14,000 foot peaks in the Rockies you’ll get a lot of youthful enjoyment from this or even the competition. But Jeep is the top of the heap – A #1.

Recognized Competition:

Jeep Wrangler $20-30,000, Toyota Rav-4 $22-27,000, Mitsubishi Outlander $20-25,000, Suzuki Grand Vitara $19-26,000, Kia Sportage $16-23,000, Subaru Forester $20-28,000,  Chevrolet Equinox $24-31,000, Ford Escape $20-27,000, Mazda Tribute $20-28,000, Saturn Vue $22-30,000, Honda CR-V $21-29,000, Nissan Rogue $20-23,000.

Good News:

It’s a Jeep with a rich history and they still make them in America.

Bad News:

Poor fuel economy.

Standard Equipment:

3.8 liter 202 hp V6 engine, 4-speed automatic transmission, 4-wheel ABS brakes, traction control, electronic roll mitigation and front sway bar disconnect, transfer case and fuel tank skid plates, sentry key theft deterrent system, cruise control, tow hooks front and rear, variable intermittent wipers, 21.6 gal fuel tank, tire pressure monitoring system, air conditioning, reclining front seats, 60/40 split folding rear seat, stereo with in dash CD player MP3 capability, SIRIUS satellite radio w/ 1 year included, temperature and compass, tilt column, sport roll bar with padding, 12 V aux outlet, soft top, fog lights and matching full size spare.

2008 Volkswagen Jetta SE (762)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2008 Volkswagen Jetta SE 2.5 which is a substantial little compact that borders on being a luxury car relative to the competition. The Audi and Acura, although listed as competition, are over priced and cost to benefit suffers. However some people are more concerned with looking rich than concerned about cost per mile they pay to chug around in traffic with absolutely no opportunity to show off their high performance automobile.

Jetta gives you a better feeling for driving a more fuel efficient, lower cost buy in commuter. Fact is the last time I tested an Audi on the highway it turned out to be an expensive experience when pushing the limits resulted in a speeding ticket. I had the same problem in Austria testing a Mercedes Benz on the wide open road where motorcycle cops are just as devious as they are here in America. But there you pay on the spot. I have always wondered if the fine ever made it from his pocket to his employer. More importantly, was he really a police officer? Why not just forget the ticket and call it a tip.

I should know better than to drive that way on a public highway anyway. Since I test drive most all cars on the race track I shouldn’t have to do any of that foolish stuff on the highway. Shame on me. Quite frankly I’m more ticked off that I got caught. Let’s be honest here.

General Info:

Parts – US/Canadian 13%, Germany 40%, Mexico 35%

Assembly – Puebla, Mexico

Class:  – Compact Cars

Cars: – Eos, GTI, Jetta, New Beetle, Passat, Passat Wagon, R32, Rabbit and Touareg 2.

Observation:

Remember discussing fuel economy and world price of gas? Well consider that in Europe where fuel per gallon is about $8.00 Europeans are more conscious of driving clean diesel fuel efficient cars that get at least twice the fuel economy as do American cars. Thus they pay the same per mile as do American drivers. My question to you who are in the know about the auto and oil companies is – why haven’t we adopted that driving philosophy in America? Write me and provide credentials and I will publish your answer.

Handling & Performance:

The average fuel economy for the compact class in the US is 29 mpg and this US version of the Jetta is below average at 24 mpg.

Styling:

This Jetta reminds me of the ever popular BMW and Acura which I always enjoy driving. But I have found many people go for “ugly”, by most standards, such as the Scion from Toyota or the Element from Honda (I’ve come to like the Element). I think the popularity of such cars is because we like to be different from the crowd. So in the scheme of things this Jetta is pretty conventional in design even if many simply say it is too much the same as the majority of cars on the road and thus boring and uninteresting. I call those “Cookie Cutter” cars, but Jetta is a rather sporty commuter and well done in my opinion.

Fit and Finish:

Jetta is thoughtfully put together and overall quite nice. I favor the bulky and solid built feeling you get from cars like this Jetta and tend to shy away from the dainty cars like Jaguar for example, which explains why Jag is a “Chick” car.

Cost:

Pricing is slightly over the average of the competition.

Features and Conveniences:

Wow … for the MSRP pricing this puppy is pretty well endowed. But I have to tell you standard or optional I find some things are not only unnecessary luxuries they can be down right nuisances and worse. The anti theft locks on the wheels sound good but that’s what we have insurance for. Just get a flat, when you’re in a hurry, and can’t find that special key to unlock the lugs… know what I mean?

Consumer Recommendation:

Resource – www.safercar.gov

If you want the sportier, well equipped, well assembled, this is a good choice and less money than the higher priced near luxury competition.

Recognized Competition:

Volkswagen Jetta $17-24,000, Audi A4 $29-48,000, Ford Focus $14-17,000, Chevrolet Cobalt $14-22,000, Hyundai Elantra $14-16,000, Mazda 3 $14-20,000, Honda Civic $15-25,000, Subaru Impreza $17-35,000, Saturn Ion $12-20,000, Chevrolet Malibu $20-27,000, Honda Civic Hybrid $23-24,000, Nissan Sentra $16-20,000, Kia Spectra $13-16,000, Suzuki Forenza $14-15,000, Toyota Corolla $15-20,000, Mitsubishi Lancer $14-18,000, Acura TSX $29-32,000, Scion tC $17,000.

Good News:

Nice to drive and well equipped and good utility of engine and design.

Bad News:

Plain styling, only fair fuel economy for this class and I read about reliability and good dealership service issues.

Standard Equipment:

2.5 liter 170 hp inline 5 cylinder engine, 6-speed automatic trans with paddle shifter, front wheel drive, variable assist electro-mechanical steering, 4-wheel anti-lock disc brake system, with engine braking assist, stability program, differential lock, front and side airbags and side curtain head airbags front and rear, child LATCH system and child safety rear door locks, daytime running lights, tire pressure monitoring system, climate control, power heated mirrors, intermittent front wipers with heated washers, cruise control, 60/40 split rear seat, tilt and telescoping steering column, remote keyless entry system, power central locking system, power windows, heated, height and lumbar adjusted front seats, rear seat armrest with storage and pass through, anti theft alarm with immobilizer theft deterrent system, 6-in dash CD changer with MP3 format, Sirius Satellite radio (3 mos included), power glass sunroof with tilt and slide, 16” alloy wheels with anti-theft locks.

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback Ralliart (750)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback Ralliart 5-door Hatchback. The Sportback is my favorite of the Lancer models because I like the rear styling and it is more of a family car. The Evolution is fun to drive with 291 horsepower and more a kids car. The Sportback sports a 237 hp engine but the turbo gives it a real boost. Some won’t like the head jerking touchy pedal when the turbo kicks in. As you will recall, a Supercharger is belt driven off of the engine so power boost is instant whereas the Turbocharger depends on RPM of the engine and as it increases it adds boost that is delayed. I did get used to the touchy-ness – kind-a.

The first observation I made driving this Lancer was the unlikely comparison with the Nissan 370Z that I had just finished test driving. Well I traveled the exact test mountain course I frequently drive and I was amazed it was performing as well relative to the “Ride on Rails” performance of the Z. I suspect that in large part was due to the AWD (all wheel drive) feature of the Lancer compared to the rear wheel drive Z.

General Info:

Parts – Japan 81%, Engine – Japan; Transmission – Germany

Assembly – Misushima, Japan

Class:  – Small Station Wagons

Cars: – Eclipse, Endeavor, Galant, Lancer, Lancer Evolution, Lancer Sportback, Outlander and              Raider.

Opinion:

Those pesky big rig trucks who share the highway with us all. I think intstinctively we all give them a wide berth, but I look at it with 3 reasons why those of us driving cars and small trucks should be aware of these big rig work horses.

  • They are bigger than us.
  • They can’t stop on a dime and certainly not as fast as you can
  • They haul up to 50 times the load volume of smaller trucks that are only a third to a quarter the footprint of the 18 wheeler. Therefore they take up a lot less space on the highway to do the same work.

The point is don’t pick a fight that you’re sure to lose.

Handling & Performance:

Very good. Lots of power with the Turbo.

Styling:

Bold grill work that I like. Some take exception that it is too big and is a copy of Audi’s signature feature.

Fit and Finish:

Good.

Cost:

In the hunt for an all wheel drive car but it has some stiff competition.

Conveniences and comfort:

Cruise controls are flat and although they look good I prefer raised controls.

2008 Kia Sorento EX 4X4 (743)

2008 Chrysler Town & Country Limited (742)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2009 Chrysler Town & Country Limited with uconnect web (Autonet). Time and technology keep marching on and this Swivel and Go configuration with a table and chairs that swivel to face each other is a mini-motor home.

With the ever growing dependence we have on computers this is a VERY cool feature and continues to show why Chrysler has been a leader in not only the futuristic designs forward and back to the future, it continues to lead in useful features. This adaptation of Wi-Fi in the car adds yet another creature comfort for how we live our lives in today’s world.

As equipped it reminds me of great in-flight first class seating and entertainment and comfort with the added capability of wireless computer connectivity. I would have thought the airlines would have done this first. But they are sure to follow.

General Info:

Parts –  US/Canadian 71%. Engine & Transmission – US.

Assembly – Windsor, Ontario, Canada

Class:  – Special Purpose Mini Van

Cars: – 300, Aspen, Aspen Hybrid, Crossfire, Pacifica, PT Cruiser, Sebring and Town & Country.

Opinion:

For those who travel Cal State highway 14 to and from LA and the Antelope Valley you are aware of the rush hour travel patterns. Cal Trans has painted lines in compliance with the legislation surrounding Diamond Lanes. In our governments infinite wisdom the Diamond lane is effective between the hours of 5AM and 9AM and for the commute in the evening from 3PM to 7PM. Outside of those hours, and on the week end you may use the HOV lane any time.

I’ve been asked if you can cross the double lines for entry and exit when it is NOT considered a Diamond lane. It makes sense to me so I discussed it with the CHP and according to California VC 21655.8A we are cautioned against doing that. I’m waiting to discuss this issue further with my contact at Media Relations and will report on what I find. If you have some input on this issue e-mail your questions and comments to me.

In the meantime if you ignore big brother I’m sure you know the fines are stiff for violations of the present law. I think the law should be changed, what do you think?

Handling & Performance:

This front wheel drive mini van is agile and it did marvelous over the Crest mountain course and never struggled for power. I found ride and comfort is very good and although the fuel economy isn’t as good as we’d all like, this is a special purpose vehicle for the family and we overlook that in these cases.

Styling:

Unique and classy. I love all the features and the lighting inside is special. I must say I totally enjoyed this week’s ride. It looks great inside and out and is functional, especially for those who are on the go. It is perfect for changing lifestyles in that we will be staying close to home in this economy and it fits the out of doors application so well.

Fit and Finish:

Good. Some say the vehicle is disappointing when it comes to fit and finish and it could be better, but all things being equal it suits me just fine. Chrysler’s advanced convenience features are the highlight of this mini van in most opinions I’ve seen.

Cost:

Competitive in class and is at the top of the list for me being uniquely configured to be the best of the family vans listed.

Conveniences and comfort:

The table stows nicely under the floor and although it is tight quarters in that use, the swivel captain’s chairs add a capability found only in the Town and Country. Nice job Chrysler.

The Autonet is as simple as any other internet connection at a hotel, for example. Your computer will find the wireless connection called Autonet and you select that and log on. Pretty neat.

Consumer Recommendation:

I find this an outstanding mini van that is more versatile than the competition listed. It is a great family van that provides so much convenience and comfort as equipped. 2nd and 3rd rows have separate entertainment facilities for DVD and the computer Wi-Fi unique to the Town & Country is sure to be a hit. If your family is on the go a lot it gives much and it only takes a small amount in reduced fuel economy.

Recognized Competition:

Chrysler Town & Country $26-37,000, Kia Sedona $21-27,000, Hyundai Entourage $ n/a, Nissan Quest $26-36,000, Honda Odyssey $26-41,000, Toyota Sienna $25-38,000, Dodge Grand Caravan $24-28,000, Volkswagen Routan $25-38,000,

Good News:

Uniquely equipped for a special family van, advanced Wi-Fi & entertainment including TV.

Bad News:

Fuel economy could be better and quality is questioned by some.

Standard Equipment:

4.0 liter 251 hp V6 engine, 6-speed automatic transmission, front and side curtain airbags in all rows, LATCH child anchor system, rear parking sensor and rear view camera, electron stability program, tire pressure monitoring, high intensity automatic headlights, power lift gate, power sliding side doors, remote keyless entry with engine immobilizer and remote start, power adjustable pedals with memory, rain sensing windshield wipers, cruise control, climate control with 3 zones, bucket seats and fold in the floor seats, 8-way power driver seat and 6-way passenger seat, heated 2nd row seats, 2nd & 3rd row window shades, 2nd row power windows.

2008 Nissan Versa SL HB (730)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2008 Nissan Versa 1.8 SL HB (hatchback). Small but it even works for taller drivers with good head and leg room, but the non-telescoping wheel may require a less than perfect reach.

Overall I grew to like this car. The size is good and the rear seat is adequately roomy. My next test car – Honda Fit – on the other hand in the next size down (small wagons) is rather limiting and yet a similar price point. This Nissan is much more serviceable.

General Info:

Parts – n/a

Assembly – n/a

Class:  – Midsize

Cars: – 350Z, Altima, Altima Hybrid, Armada, Frontier, GT-R, Maxima, Murano, Pathfinder, Quest, Rogue, Sentra, Titan, Versa and Xterra.

Observation:

Well, it worked. Not so long ago the Highway 14, I-5, the 118 and the 210 freeways were closed because of fire. Then again November 15th they were closed again. I wrote in my column back then there were emergency numbers you should remember and put in your cell phones to be equipped to find alternate routes when that happens again. I had to get to Pasadena on that day and called the CHP number and “wa-la” I found the Crest was open and went with a crowd of folks doing the same thing. I was in time for the birthday party and was happy to have had another route open to get there.

Sand Canyon was also closed on that day, which is the only other escape route to and from the San Gabriel Valley and the Antelope Valley.

Once again for your information the numbers to call are: Cal Trans for automated road conditions and closures 800-427-7623 and the CHP emergency road number is 323-259-2010. Try the Cal Trans number now so you will be familiar with the automated system. It works pretty well.

Handling & Performance:

Fun to drive and easy to maneuver and park. On the road it rides smoothly and comfy on long commutes. Although you only get 122 horsepower it does 0-60 in an acceptable 9 seconds.

Styling:

Hatchback design will turn some off, but it is sporty and the hatchback is well concealed.

Fit and Finish:

Very good.

Cost:

Good value for the money, especially when you consider the cost of operating.

Features and Conveniences:

Medium sophistication level of tech stuff but lots of it. Well done.

Consumer Recommendation:

Resource – www.safercar.gov

Consider a 2008 model if you’re in the market since you’ll get the best buy since most car retailers are overstocked and happy to see you. Kind of like the stock market and housing. If you’ve got the cash or credit this is a great time to buy these kinds of assets. A dealer friend says he’s experiencing up to 50% discounts on many cars.

Recognized Competition:

Nissan Versa $13-16,000, Volkswagen Rabbit $16-18,000, Kia Spectra 5 $15,995, Kia Rio5 $13-14,000, Suzuki Forenza Wagon $15-16,000, Suzuki Reno $14,000, Toyota Matrix $16-22,000, Pontiac Vibe $16-21,000, Chevrolet Aveo5 $12-15,000, Scion xB $15,750, Chevrolet HHR $19-25,000, Scion xD $14,650, Hyundai Accent $11-15,000, Ford Focus $15-18,000, Saturn Astra $17-20,000, Dodge Caliber $16-25,000, Chrysler PT Cruiser $18-24,000, Honda Fit $15-19,000, Toyota Yaris $12-16,000,Suzuki SX4 Sport $13-17,000.

Good News:

Well priced, great fuel economy, fun to drive and ease of parking, good storage cubby holes, molded in door water bottle slots and decent size trunk. You’ll never find a better time to buy if you are able to.

Bad News:

The economy sucks.

Standard Equipment:

1.8 liter 122 hp 4-cylinder engine, continuously variable auto transmission, stabilizer bars front and rear, power assisted front disc rear drum brakes, power steering, 15” alloy wheels, halogen lights, air conditioning, 6-way driver adjustable seat, audio with 6- in dash CD player, tilt steering column, variable intermittent washer/wipers front and rear, cruise control with steering wheel controls, power windows and locks with remote keyless entry, 60/40 split fold down rear seat, cloth seats.
