2006 Hyundai Azera Limited (627)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the new for 2006 Hyundai Azera Limited 4 door sedan that will knock your socks off for a car that speaks more than the sticker price would indicate. This is a very nice automobile. Ok, so it doesn’t have the fancy badge but you won’t pay a premium for the quality either.

There are a growing number of cars that will continue to make a name for themselves as quality cars with a price point that won’t break the bank – ‘your bank’ and this is one of those cars. The model year difference is not enough to wait for the 2007 and you’ll have much more bargaining power with the 2006.

General Info:

Parts – US/Canadian 5%, Korea 93%

Assembly – Asan , Korea

Class: – Large Car

Cars: – Accent, Azera, Elantra, Entourage, Santa Fe , Sonata, Tiburon and Tucson .

Handling & Performance:

Superb for the money. The important thing here is that you’ll get features only available on cars costing much more.

Styling:

Cookie cutter to some extent but what isn’t these days. But hold onto your hat because the young lions in the design departments have been given the go ahead to put their ideas out there for the 21st century. Some have paid dividends, like the PT Cruiser from Chrysler but I have real doubts over some new ‘youth oriented’ designs by young surfer type designers in today’s world. Know what I mean.

Ford, on the other hand unveiled the new Italian designed Mustang at the LA Auto Show. The Italian designer, in broken English, explained his design to the press November 29th to a packed Media event. This first to be seen new Mustang Concept is sure to hit the showroom floors soon – because it is a winner and more importantly because Ford needs a positive shot in the arm. It is flat out beautiful and I would own one. Bravo Ford.

Fit and Finish:

Back to the Hyundai Azera that is sure to impress you as much as it has me.

Cost:

Outstanding bang for your buck Pocahontas was heard to say. And I agree with her but you can bet the price will go up when consumers begin to buy these lovely sedans.

Conveniences and comfort:

Excellent. This is a 10 in my book.

Consumer Recommendation:

You’ve gotta include this in your search for a family passenger sedan if in the $35,000 price range. You figure what to do with the other $9,000 you won’t give to its competition.

By the way, if you need confidence in the Korean car maker, consider that Toyota and other Japanese car makers are having their cars assembled in Korea . South Korea , of course. Face it; nothing exists in North Korea ‘s hold over of Communist form of Government. What a testimony to Western economic systems.

Incidentally you should be able to deal on a new 2006 model as they clear out stock for 2007 model year cars.

Recognized Competition:

Hyundai Azera $24-27,000, Ford Five Hundred $23-28,000, Buick Lucerne $26-35,000, Toyota Avalon $27-34,000, Chrysler 300 $24-40,000, Mercury Montego $24-29,000.

Good News:

Great handling and performance, nice styling and a roomy passenger sedan that is found in more expensive brands. Decent fuel economy (I got just over 25 mpg average). Very Good warranty.

Bad News:

Road noise is noticeable but didn’t deter me from recommending this for your consideration.

2007 Acura RDX TECH Sport Utility Vehicle (626)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2007 Acura RDX Sport Utility Vehicle. Hot digedy dog this is sweet. I had just returned from 4 days of golf on the Alabama Trail and if you play golf they are designed by Robert Trent Jones. Very fun but exhausting – and after 17 hours of golf and travel to get home this beauty was waiting for me at Los Angeles International airport like the luv that it is. She didn’t say a word all the way home, but you could hear her purr.

General Info:

Parts – US/Canadian 65%, Japan 25%

Assembly – Marysville , Ohio , USA

Class:  – Special Purpose

Cars: – RDX, MDX, RL, TL and TSX

Handling & Performance:

Watch that you don’t get whip lash from the variable flow turbocharger that will turn this 4 cylinder engine into much more. But it will come with a price of poor fuel economy. Performance is quick and it handles more like a passenger car which, of course, is why they refer to it as a crossover.

Fit and Finish:

Outstanding! I just love those folks who have a first rate work ethic. The Japanese continue to consider assembly important and I believe it spills over to their plants in any country.

Cost:

Competitive for the class and similarly equipped. The AT model is about $4,000 less and excludes the nav system and Cassette player.

Conveniences and comfort:

Everything you could want and need minus an entertainment system… that I particularly like. Why, because I have grandchildren and that is the best child sitter ever while you’re driving. No more will you hear – “Are we there yet?”

Consumer Recommendation:

If you don’t need “BIG” this 5-seat crossover provides the comfort of a passenger car with much of what an SUV has become so popular for.

Recognized Competition:

Acura RDX $33-36,000, BMW X3 $36,800, Nissan Murano $28-32,000, Mazda CX7 $24-28,000, Mercury Mariner $21-27,000.

Good News:

An elegant mid-size SUV, great turbo performance and car like handling coupled with all wheel drive, well appointed and quality construction.

Bad News:

Poor fuel economy and pricey albeit competitive with cars in its class.

Standard Equipment:

2.3 liter 240 hp 4-cylinder turbo engine, 5-speed auto trans w/ paddle shifters, all wheel drive, 4-wheel power ABS disc brakes with electronic brake distribution, 4-wheel independent suspension with stabilizer bars, power steering, “drive by wire throttle”, front and side airbags, side curtain airbags with rollover sensor, vehicle stability assist, tire pressure monitor system, remote entry with security, immobilizer theft deterrent, child latch system, navigation system, communication system with ‘real time traffic’, leather, surround sound w/ 10 speakers and 6 disc DVD, CD, DTS, steering wheel audio controls, XM Satellite radio, climate control, driver 8-way power seats, heated front seats, power windows and locks, hands free telephone interface, multi information display, power moonroof with tilt, fog lights, intermittent wipers, heated power mirrors w/ turn indicators.

2006 Volvo C70 Convertible (625)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the reintroduced Volvo C70 Convertible for 2006. It’s been a roller coaster ride with introduction in 1998 with a fixed top and soft top convertible. They dropped the coupe in ’03 but continued the rag top in ’04, it went into hibernation in ’05 and emerged in 06. Sounds like some women I know.

Well, there is also a 2007 model with only minor changes not worth talking about. But what is worth talking about is that this is a really nice convertible. I wonder about the technical difficulties that may surface with the hard convertible top, but as is it is wonderfully easy and precise – as you’d expect from the Sweeeds.

General Info:

Parts – Sweden – 21%, Germany – 18%, US/Canadian .3%

Assembly – Gothenburg, Sweden

Class: – Sub Compact

Cars: – C70, S40,S60, S80, V50, V70, XC70 and XC 90

Handling & Performance:

Really excellent in the turns. Top down, heater on, let it snow. And this is no slouch in 0-60 mph in about 7 seconds. Speed sensitive power steering is exceptional in feel and function.

Styling:

Very special in look and feel. The added steel supports and unibody construction gives the car an exceptionally solid feel uncharacteristic with many other convertibles. The retractible hardtop is totally power driven with one button control for up and down. Fantastic.

Fit and Finish:

Excellent

Cost:

A little pricey, but this is a fine automobile.

Conveniences and comfort:

This lady is well endowed.

Consumer Recommendation:

Consider the ‘06 model because there were only minor changes in ’07 and you’ll be able to deal a little better – assuming there are any left when you go hunting. But there isn’t a lot in the category so you won’t be overwhelmed with testing.

Recognized Competition:

Volvo C70 $38,710, BMW 3 Series $31-45,000, Audi TT $34-47,000, Jaguar XK Series $75-92,000, Mercedes Benz CLK-Class $46-89,000 and Audi A4 $28-47,000.

Good News:

Beautifully designed convertible, very comfortable, handles great and even with the top down and stowed in the trunk there is a decent cargo cubby hole that will take a good sized suit case.

Standard Equipment:

2.5 liter Inline 5 cylinder 218 horsepower turbocharged engine with variable valve timing, 6 speed manual transmission, front wheel drive, independent supspension with anti-roll bars front and rear, 4-wheel power ABS disc brakes with electronic brake distribution, speed dependent power steering, 17 inch alloy wheels, dynamic stability traction control, roll over protection system with pop up rear roll bars, driver information system, extra strength steel supports, uni-body construction, front and side air bags, engine immobilizer anti theft ignition with coded keys, child seat anchors, fog lights, power retractible steel hardtop, power front seats, leather inserts seating serfaces, locking rear seat pass through, climate control, trip computer and cruise control, power windows with auto up and down, heated rear glass window

Gas Stats:

$2.43/ Gal avg.

20 City and 29 Highway MPG

Pricing:

MSRP $38,710.

2007 Chrysler Aspen (624)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the very new 2007 Chrysler Aspen SUV. I know, you ask how can they continue to produce gas hungry trucks and small busses like this Aspen? But then I say to you, “Oil / Gas Shortage”? What Oil Shortage? Is it all fabricated? That has to be everyone’s question. The price of gas at the pumps has now adjusted to the real world to a price reflected by the cost of oil worldwide. We consume so much that our price is less per barrel than Europe for example.

So why do we continue to build such big vehicles? Simple – the consumer demands them and is willing to pay the price at the gas pump.

Do we have a moral obligation to buy fuel efficient vehicles?  No because we have free will and we WILL buy these boat and trailer hauling, rough and tumble, out back 4-wheel, macho machines if we want to. It’s our money and damn it we’ll have what we want. Now, if the price of gas goes high enough you may see a change in attitude. Where is that, you say… well how about $8 per gallon that is similar to the price of gas in Europe?

Well these things don’t get much larger. In fact it occurred to me that now I think I know how Edith Ann must have felt like in that rocking chair. I’m average height and weight (ok if the truth be known my weight is more than average) but this still dwarfs the average guy or gal.

Public Service Observation:

If you “Aim” you car … you might just be a road “Redneck”. Jeff Foxworthy didn’t utter those words – they are mine.

Handling & Performance:

In the whole concept of high performance gas thirsty big trucks and SUV’s these things are more powerful and capable than ever in history. The products just get better and to those who think the old days were better they need a reality check. Nostalgia aside there is and never has been a better car than those being manufactured today. Braking, suspension, and high tech accident prevention devices are literally fantastic and functional. The drive train is simply the best ever as evidenced by routine warranties that are 100,000 miles – 5, 6 ,7 or even 10 years. They can do that because the systems are nearly bullet proof and trouble free.

Cruise control is one of my favorite features so I’m acutely aware of how well it works. Well it has an annoying fluctuation on a downhill slope. This is pretty rare and I’m also wondering if it were just a defective unit.

Styling:

Now, you have to ask yourself – nostalgia aside again – have cars ever been more great looking? This Aspen is among many in its field that are just drop dead beautiful.

Fit and Finish:

Superb ! The touches like the high intensity (daylight) lighting in several nooks and crannies give you the feeling you’re in a space ship. Ok, so I’ve never been in a space ship but its what I envision a space ship would look like inside.

Cost:

This is a different spin on how good a product we’re talking about, because there is no free lunch, and you’ll pay for the privelidge of owning today’s modern marvels. But relative to the competition Chrysler continues to be in there punching. The fight for your consuming dollar is brutal. Manufacturers romance the buyer with glitz and glamour and convince us we must have that car or truck to be a complete human being. It will impress your neighbors, friends and the opposite sex with clearly explained rewards.

Conveniences and comfort:

Wonderful stuff. Demand has pushed technology to the far out edge of the universe. I’m beginning to feel Navigation systems are no longer a luxury but rather a necessity. OnStar from GM is wonderful and I wouldn’t want to have a car without that capability. Unfortunately this Aspen doesn’t have it. But I have found it keeps me out of trouble on every road trip. It literally removes the stress and anxiety of running out of gas and needing to find a station of my choice and open or not. In a strange town I’m never worried because GPS and a friendly voice accessible at any time of the day or night will guide me instantly to a safe harbor.

Another more common feature is the tire monitor system and in fact it prevented a potential problem by turning on the warning icon when I began to lose pressure in one of the rear tires. I stopped at a gas station to learn I had picked up a nail in the tire. The attendant plugged it and in literally 5 minutes I was back on the road. I could have continued to drive and found myself struggling with changing the tire in a dangerous place in the middle of the night.

Consumer Recommendation:

The menu is packed with lots of choices. But if you ever thought you’d pop for a large SUV you need to act now while this introductory price is in effect. Trust me this is one of the best priced products of all the competition listed. When it earns acceptance the price will reflect that endorsement. This product is Mercedes Benz inspired from Daimler Chrysler.

Recognized Competition:

Chrysler Aspen $31-34,000, GMC Yukon $34-43,000, GMC Yukon Denali $47-50,000, Lexus LX 470 $67,000, Toyota Land Cruiser $56,000, Volvo XC90 $36-46,000, Jeep Commander $28-38,000, Land Rover LR3 $38-53,000, Lexus GX 470 $47,000, Dodge Durango $29-38,000, Nissan Armada $35-43,000, Cadillac Escalade $54-59,000, Chevrolet Suburban $36-48,000, Mercedes Benz GL-Class $55,000, Ford Expedition $29-43,000 and Lincoln Navigator $46-51,000.

Bad News:

Gas hog, soft suspension that makes it comfy also makes it rock and roll in the turns, so you won’t be road racing in this Aspen.

2007 GMC Yukon XL Denali – AWD (623)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2007 GMC Yukon XL Denali – AWD. This is a revisit from 1999 and 6 years has matured this SUV and refined it as you’d expect.

You know how some people exude confidence? Some cars, trucks, busses and trains do as well. I drove this Denali to the SEMA show in Las Vegas and was really comfortable. I would be flying back to Los Angeles and some flights scare the hell out of many of us. Well, the flight back was uneventful but the bad news is it was only slightly faster, all things considered, than the drive up in the Denali . I suppose that’s why folks drive so much and so often. It is flat out convenient. When I consider the drive from Los Angeles to Las Vegas at about 300 miles and say 4 hours it is a no brainer to drive rather than fly. Consider: 1 hour to get to the airport, 2 hours before the flight and after a 45 minutes flight it takes another 15 minutes to get to the gate. Then you spend another half hour waiting for your luggage. It’s not over yet, because you have to get to your destination by taxi, rent a car or have someone pick you up … wow! Drive, it’s easier.

Driving the Denali it went like this… set the Nav system for the address of the hotel and hit the road. That’s it – and wa-la 3 and a half hours later I was in Las Vegas at my destination and my luggage was still behind me nicely stowed. I didn’t need a cab or whatever when I got there. As a rule of thumb if the distance is about 500 miles it is a toss up whether I will drive or fly.

Denali , of course, is a GM car so it also has GPS wonderful On Star. A must in my next car. I love it more every time I use it. Now they have added Turn-By-Turn directions just as if you were using the Nav system. It works great. And the folks at On Star are really nice people. I wonder if they will still be nice when the product gets more widely accepted – and you can be sure it will.

General Info:

Parts – n/a

Assembly – USA

Class:  – Special Purpose

Cars: – Canyon, Envoy, Savana, Sierra 1500, 2500, 3500 and Hybrid, Yukon (XL and Denali ).

Handling & Performance:

pectacular. My ride to Vegas was super comfy and lots of power and weight to give that secure feeling. Like many relationships it can be a love/hate kind-a thing. I hate gas guzzlers but I love the comfort and conveniences. Smooth is no exaggeration. I was less frazzled driving than all the hoop-la getting to and from the airport on the return trip.

Power? You want power – 6.2 liter 380 horsepower V8 is just fine thanks. Auto engineer friend Merkel would sneer at that data. Why, because real engineered cars like many European cars get 100 hp per liter Merkel will roar. I know, but – but – but …

Some of the competition

No complaints. Very clean and pretty.

Fit and Finish:

Very good. I noticed the seams were neat and components were tightly assembled, especially in comparison with the Chrysler Aspen the following week where I noticed some poorly fitting plastic cladding. The Aspen is making its debut and of course the Denali has been around long enough to get all the bugs out.

Cost:

The MSRP is $49,615 but when you add some neat stuff the price quickly jumps to $57,000. The high price tag extras (Options) are things like Navigation system with CD, DVD and MP3 for $2,100, 20 inch Chrome Aluminum wheels (great looking by the way) for $2,000 more and Rear seat entertainment system ( a must when you have kids on a long trip) for about $1,300 and finally the power sliding sunroof for another $1,000. I have little use for this option. Hey, it’s only money – right?

Conveniences:

Pop for the extras and enjoy the ride … but there are some things that are real nice and don’t add a lot to the cost, like the rearview camera system for $195. Then there is the heated steering wheel for $150 – “Say what?”  I’m with you – what’s that all about.

There are several features included in the MSRP that I like: tire pressure monitor, ultrasonic rear park assist, power liftgate and of course remote keyless entry. I can live without the Remote Vehicle starter feature – but if you live in Minnesota you may find it useful in winter. Rain sensing wipers are kind of cool, but I can usually tell when it starts to rain and my fingers know to turn on the wiper. XM Satellite Radio is very cool and worthy of consideration.

Consumer Recommendation:

If you’re in the market for a large SUV this new entry for 2007 must be seen.

Recognized Competition (MSRP range):

GMC XL Denali $47-50,000, BMW X3 $37,000, Toyota 4Runner $28-38,000, Jeep Grand Cherokee $27-43,000, Land Rover LR3 $38-53,000, Lexus GX 470 $47,000, Dodge Durango $29-38,000, Nissan Xterra $20-28,000, Infiniti FX $38-50,000, Chevrolet TrailBlazer $25-37,000, Ford Explorer $25-35,000, Honda Pilot $27-35,000.

Good News:

Solid and comfortable ride for up to 8 people and still space for luggage.

Bad News:

Less than stellar fuel economy – in fact they state on their window sticker (Fuel Economy) “Not Applicable to this vehicle”. I have news for them – it’s applicable to me.

Standard Equipment:

6.2 liter 280 horsepower V8 engine, 6-speed automatic transmission, all wheel drive, self leveling rear shocks, locking differential, dual front and side airbags (all rows), OnStar system (1 year safe and sound), 4-wheel ABS disc brakes, stability control, theft deterrent, child security locks, power windows, locks and adjustable pedals, remote vehicle starter, remote keyless entry, tire pressure monitor, ultrasonic rear parking assist, running boards, heavy duty trailering equipment, 18 inch polished aluminum wheels, power liftgate and liftglass, power folding mirrors with auto dimming and turn signals, rain sensing wipers, heated washer fluid system, leather, 12-way power front seats, 2nd row power seat release, 3 passenger 3rd row seat, audio with MP3 compatible 6-in dash CD player, XM Satellite radio service, (3 months), auto tri-zone air conditioning and driver information center. Options: Navigation system, 20 inch chrome aluminum wheels, rear seat entertainment system, power sunroof, rearview camera system and heated steering wheel. ($8,775).

Gas Stats:

$2.23/ Gal avg.

2007 Hummer H3X (622)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2007 Hummer H3X that rounds out the entire line of Hummers we’ve reviewed. I rather liked the scaled down Toyota FJ, but there is nothing like the real thing and this is the real article. The FJ, however, is also scaled down in price and is about $10,000 less than the H3X.

Me… I would opt for the Hummer … nothing like it on the planet and if you’re even more way out the original H1 or Alpha version will cost more than three times the price of this H3X. And there is no doubt it will set you even further apart from the mainstream.

General Info:

Parts – n/a

Assembly – USA

Class:  – Special Purpose

Cars: – H1-Alpha, H2 and H3.

Public Service Observation:

Ever notice how some driver’s gas pedal foot is lighter while they are on their cell phone and they speed up when they finish their call. It will usually be a man who is guilty of that fluctuation of speed because guys can’t multi task as well as women. She not only can talk on the cell phone, she can put on make up, brush her hair and discipline the kids in the back seat – and all that at 70 miles per hour. You gotta just love those gals.

Handling & Performance:

Undoubtedly among the most comfortable of the SUVs I’ve driven. Fuel consumption is much better than prior models and it burns 87 octane regular gasoline. This puppy will take you from 0 to 60 mph in about 10 seconds which is not too shabby for this hunk.

Styling:

Hummers are clearly the most recognizable of SUVs and the most unique on our highways today. It has that unmistakable look which exudes a feeling of invincibility. That alone will attract many macho guys to this rugged looking sport Ute. The H3 is 17 inches shorter than the H2 but hardly noticeable unless they are side by each.

Fit and Finish:

As the Hummer has matured and evolved from the H1 (Alpha) to the H2 and H3 they have become much more refined. While on a road trip to Yosemite National Park several guys stopped to take a look. One asked if it was on the same platform as the Chevy Tahoe, but it is, in fact, built on the much smaller Chevy Colorado frame.

Cost:

Of the many SUVs the price of admission to the H3 family has to be uniqueness but still the price is very competitive.

Conveniences and comfort:

The first Hummer I drove was the original H1 and it was extremely basic. Rough and tumble and as close to the GI Hummer (HumVee jargon for HMMWV that stands for High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle) as any production civilian vehicle can get. They are still in service in the military today but surely a novelty for civilian use.

Consumer Recommendation:

If you are in the market for an SUV you will want to test drive this one. I’m into different and would lean strongly toward the H3 over most of the competition that are more into “Fluff” than being as capable off road vehicles.

Recognized Competition:

GMC Envoy $26-38,000, BMW X3 $37,000, Toyota 4Runner $28-38,000, Jeep Grand Cherokee $27-43,000, Land Rover LR3 $38-53,000, Lexus GX 470 $47,000, Dodge Durango $29-38,000, Nissan Xterra $20-28,000, Infiniti FX $38-50,000, Chevrolet TrailBlazer $25-37,000, Ford Explorer $25-35,000, Honda Pilot $27-35,000.

Good News:

Unique styling, improved but still unacceptable fuel economy, solid comfy ride, elegantly appointed and easy to use features,

Bad News:

Fuel thirsty hog and the spare tire mounting reduces rear visibility.

Standard Equipment:

3.7 liter 242 hp inline 5 cylinder engine, 5-speed manual (4-speed automatic is optional), air conditioning, power windows and locks, 8-way power leather seats, with driver and passenger heated seats, leather wrapped steering wheel, shift knob and boot, audio with CD and MP3 player, front and side airbags, traction control, full size spare tire with cover, 18” wheels, chrome tubular side steps, chromed door handles, mirror caps and fuel filler door, and stability control. Options include the following: Roof rail airbag system with rollover sensor, power sunroof, 4-speed auto trans, OnStar with turn-by-turn navigation, XM Satellite radio (first 3 mos) and Navigation system.

2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GT (620)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GT sport car convertible with a small rear seat. It will work for children and smaller people in a pinch, but it is really a two seater. Mom at 86 years old was able to wiggle into the back for a short trip.

She felt confined but didn’t complain all that much. If it had been the new and popular Pontiac Solstice (new in 2006) and sister Saturn Sky new for 2007 a third passenger would have been out of the question.

This Eclipse just gets better every time I test it, which has been a couple of years ago. You’ll love it as much as I did if you’re into performance. Perhaps the most memorable sport car (albeit only a two seater) for me keeps coming to mind and that is the Nissan 350Z. But neither of us would be likely to kick this Eclipse out of bed.

General Info:

Parts – U.S./Canada 51%, Japan 34%.

Assembly –   Japan

Class:  – Mini compact

Cars: – Eclipse, Endeavor, Galant, Lancer, Montero, Outlander and Raider.

Public Service:

I recently attended the National Energy Symposium at the California State Capitol. It was fascinating at the very least. But it was also interesting that one of the panelists, Petros Ioannou, Ph.D. stated that “efficiency is the key to solving the energy problem”. He pointed out that use of such devices as Adaptive Cruise Control conserves a significant amount of fuel. Dr. Ioannou is Director of the Center of Advanced Transportation Technologies , USC Viterbi School of Engineering in Los Angeles .

He also discussed his departments extensive research on transportation technology, where they concluded that accidents contribute to significant waste and pollution. Ok, so dah, is that what they get the big bucks to tell us? While waiting in traffic because of an accident we came to the same conclusion and it didn’t cost the tax payers nearly as much to discover that well kept secret. He suggested the use of GPS devices could assist in the quicker removal of obstructions from accidents.

Well Doctor, I’ve got a better solution – equip Highway Patrol cars with “Snow Plow” blades on the front of their cars so they can simply push the car off the highway to allow traffic to pass and clean up the mess after rush hour. As for the people, they can wait for the ambulance which, by the way, would be able to get to the accident site much quicker if traffic is moving. Sorry Doc, but most of us have a keen sense of the obvious.

Handling & Performance:

Outstanding and impressive with this way cool powerful V6. 0-60 in just 6.5 seconds is all you’ll need, and more than most of what the competition offers.

Styling:

This is the nicest design look and feel of any previous attempts.

Fit and Finish:

Very good.

Cost:

Pricey if you consider a Sky or Solstice sell from $16-23,000. But I’m always reminded there is no free lunch and the quality of construction and performance difference is significant. What I don’t know is if that difference is worth the $7-14,000 price differential.

Conveniences and comfort:

You’ll notice this one fits like a glove. Some will complain it is confining. But I like the feel a lot. My first impressions were after stepping off United flight 527 from Sacramento in the dark. I sank down into a comfortable seat, observed the beautiful blue and white gauges as I zipped down the freeway enjoying 9 speaker audio that capped off the day just beautifully. And I wondered more about those “Brain-iacs” at the Capitol conference.

Consumer Recommendation:

If you have little guys the back seat will work for quick trips or if you duct tape the little buggers you can drive further. If no children you’ll likely use the back seats for storage overflow from a small trunk. But this is a great option to a two seat sport car. Really nice and a must drive in your selection search. This is arguably the best of the competition in this class.

Recognized Competition:

Mitsubishi Eclipse $20-28,000, Hyundai Tiburon $16-21,000, Ford Focus $13-18,000, Ford Mustang $19-32,000, Infiniti G35 $31-34,000, Honda Civic $15-24,000, Subaru Impreza $18-33,000, Nissan 350Z $28-40,000, Chevrolet Cobalt $13-21,000, Scion tC $16,400, Mazda MX5 $20-26,000, Volkswagen GTI $22,000, Mazda RX-8 $26-31,000.

Good News:

Fun fun fun to drive, powerful, smooth and tight drive train and quick suspension for that driving on rails feeling.

Bad News:

A little pricey, small trunk and confining interior feel.

Standard Equipment:

3.8 liter 260 horsepower V6 front drive engine, 6-speed manual trans with overdrive, dual front and side air bags, engine immobilizer, anti-theft system, daytime running lights, power assisted 4-wheel ANS disc brakes, power steering, traction control, air conditioning, power cloth top with rear glass window, power tonneau cover, power windows and locks, cruise control, Rockford Fosgate audio system with 6-indash CD player, MP3 playback, steering wheel audio controls, clock, compass and outside temp on display, 6-way power driver seat, keyless entry, 17” alloy wheels, power mirrors, integrated rear spoiler and fog lights.

2007 Dodge Caliber R/T FWD (619)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2007 Dodge Caliber R/T Front Wheel Drive SUV.

Yet another sport utility. Do you think these guys know something they’re not telling us? Is there something about $4 buck a gallon gasoline they don’t understand? Did someone just find an oil reserve that will eliminate the need for middle east oil? Why else would we play into the hands of those bent on our destruction?

“Suppose you were an idiot; and suppose you were a congressman; but then I repeat myself.” – Mark Twain.

You gotta just love that man who recognized at the turn of the 20th century what is still true today as we forge forward into the 21st century.

Anyway, Chrysler has (along with all manufacturers in the auto industry) at least improved the fuel economy of cars and trucks like this SUV “looking” vehicle. Powered by a 2.4 liter I 4-cylinder engine will get 26 highway mpg but you can push that up to 32 mpg highway if you opt for the 1.8 liter inline 4-cylinder.

Public Service Reminder:

Keep the traffic flow moving by slowing down to no more than what the general speed flow is. If everyone is traveling at 50 mph in heavy traffic and you insist on doing 75 you not only get there no sooner, you will be a hazard to everyone on the road. At the very least you will cause a ripple effect when forced to brake down to the average speed of those around you. That will bring everyone far behind to a screeching halt to avoid collisions if they’re lucky. Guess what? It will have been your fault. Keep the pace and be safe in consideration of all who must share the road with you.

Handling & Performance:

Quite a nice comfy ride. You won’t break any speed records but you will go 0-60 mph in just under 10 seconds. Compared to a Corvette Z06 that does 0-60 in under 4 seconds I guess it seems slow. But for every ass there’s a seat, I’ve heard it said, and these two cars have nothing else in common either. The Vette was just used as a reference point of perhaps the fastest production car on the highway today.

Styling:

I like the styling, but it would have been nice to include a roof rack as standard equipment considering the limited cargo space inside. Seating is provided for 5 people and I’m sure that will be a buying consideration for larger families.

Interestingly enough this Caliber comes with a large speaker system in the rear tail gate that swings down with the gate open so you can have music at “Tailgate” parties or anywhere radio broadcasting, CD music etc may be wanted at outside venues.

Fit and Finish:

Good.

Cost:

Actually pretty competitive and when I drive economy cars it never ceases to amaze me that manufacturers can build a piece of machinery as cheaply as they do.

Conveniences and comfort:

Overall this is a well thought out interior with very convenient storage cubby holes with today’s drivers in mind. What a novel idea – considering what the consumer may want. Sometime you’ve got to wonder if they really think about how the product will be used.

Consumer Recommendation:

This is a passenger car we used to call a station wagon. I know it looks like an SUV but it isn’t in the true sense of our perception of the 4-wheel drive, tow a boat, go off the road and basically indestructible. If you really will need to tow a boat, the 1,000 pound rating isn’t likely enough.

Recognized Competition:

Dodge Caliber $14-19,000, Ford Focus $13-18,000, Scion xB $14,000, Chevrolet HHR $15-16,000, Mazda 3 $14-19,000, Subaru Impreza Wagon $18-27,000, Toyota Matrix $15-19,000, Scion xB $14,030, Chrysler PT Cruiser $14-29,000, Volkswagen Golf $16-20,000, Suzuki Aerio SX $14-17,000, Kia Rio 5 $13,700, Pontiac Vibe $16,630.

Good News:

Well priced, decent fuel economy and comfortable.

Bad News:

No roof rack.

Standard Equipment:

2.4 liter 172 horsepower inline 4-cylinder engine, continuously variable transaxle transmission, dual air bags, solar glass, 4-wheel ABS disc brake system, rear window defroster, rear fold flat seat, 60/40 split reclinine seat, theft deterrent system, intermittent front wipers, rear window wiper/ washer,  sliding sun visors w/mirrors.

2007 Saturn Sky (618)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2007 Saturn Sky sports car. Remember the song with lyrics that go something like “Blue Sky’s smiling on me, nothing but blue skies do I see…” And that’s what I’m driving as I speak, and it’s blue. But there are a few clouds in this Sky even if the overall feeling is very positive and rain isn’t likely.

Of course, you know its sister – Pontiac Solstice but because this is the better looking sister it will surely be hot – hot – hot. This one will be asked to the prom first – count on it. It has nice edges that flow beautifully where Solstice is more rounded and not near as exciting to the passionate eye.

I can offer a suggestion for the 50% of car buyers who want or need an SUV. If you are young at heart and on a beer budget, buy the very fun Retro Chevrolet HHR for car #1 and you’ll have enough money for this heart warming Sky for pure driving fun and short week end romantic getaways.

Public Service:

Another look at the Diamond Lanes. Some smart diamond lanes allow all traffic to use them during lighter traffic hours. Thus it becomes the #1 fast lane. The Highway Patrol advises you can’t cross over the lines however, even though technically it isn’t a Diamond lane in off peak times. It’s a stupid rule and shouldn’t be enforced by our Robo-Cops.

Handling & Performance:

If you like the exhilaration of driving through the mountains with the wind blowing through your hair, this is wun-der-ful. Even critics will have to give this Sky high marks for a chassis and suspension that allows for great road-a-bility. It has a solid, comfortable, wide track, road hugging ride that makes it totally fun to drive.

The 5-speed trans shifts well but I like to skip shifts where ever possible and you can’t do that very well with 177 horsepower. The Red Line model produces 260 horsepower for an MSRP of $28,295. That model includes standard equipment upgrades like traction and stability control. Good stuff.

Styling:

This has to be one of the highlights at the debutante ball. Everyone I’ve spoken with love the look, but if you are 6 feet tall and over forget this one. I suspect you can’t please everyone about everything, but I believe they could have made it for all – short and tall.

Tall folks will say: not enough leg room and the gauges are blocked from view by the steering wheel that will not adjust up far enough for them.

But even average build people will add:  poorly placed cup holders, not nearly enough space for things like sun glasses, paper, pens or road maps. There are pouches in front of each seat, but they blew it for not giving the interior more thought.

Fit and Finish:

You’ll find seams fit better than prior Saturn’s. Engineers tell me they have eliminated the polymer siding (dent resistant material with all new Saturn cars) which they credit for reduced gaps. It seems the dent proof siding flexed so as to require wider space. Consumers perceived that as an indication that the car was put together poorly.

On the oops side, little things like the metal name plate on the door opening is not glued down well enough which is all too common in much of the assembly details. These are not expensive things to have been done right and which points to a project “Unfinished”.

Cost:

Properly priced in my estimate, but it appears they are in such demand they carry a premium over MSRP of as much as $5,000. Tell me it isn’t so.

Conveniences and comfort:

I continue to wonder why manufacturers don’t have journalists or other real people drive these cars before they hit the production line. Hello! Anybody home? Automotive engineer, Art Center College of Design professor and author and friend Merkel Weiss noted a few things but generally he liked the car. For those of you who know Merkel know how rare that fact is.

He feels the convertible top is bulky with larger components than necessary. A shiny black plastic piece on top of the dash glares and serves no evident purpose. The fuel tank could have been designed to allow more trunk space – Miata did it! Everything on the interior is plastic and junk. Merkel, don’t hold back, tell me how your really feel.

Agree Merkel, it is an unfinished symphony.

The seats are very comfortable for the average man or woman, with side cushions that hold you perfectly in those side “G” force corners through the mountains.

The sun visors are only partially useful as they don’t rotate to the side window.

Consumer Recommendation:

Test drive the Sky, Solstice, HHR and PT Cruiser if you want to cover all the family needs while conserving cash. For a more rugged off road capability test drive the Toyota FJ and you will have driven three of the hottest cars for 2007.

Recognized Competition:

Saturn Sky $25-28,000, Mercedes SLK $43-62,000, Mini Cooper $17-25,000, VW New Beetle $17-22,000, Nissan 350Z $28-40,000, Honda 2000 S $34,050, BMW Z4 $36-42,000, Pontiac Solstice $21-26,000, Mazda MX-5 Miata $20-26,000.

Good News:

Special styling, eye candy for the car lover.

Bad News:

Poor attention to detail in several areas.

Standard Equipment:

2.4 liter inline 4-cylender 177 horsepower engine, 5-speed manual transmission, front engine rear wheel drive, hydraulic rack and pinion steering, 4-wheel independent suspension, 4-wheel ABS disc brakes, stainless steel exhaust, dual air bags, tire sealant and inflator kit, theft deterrent system, daytime running lights, cloth convertible top, fog lights, 18 inch painted aluminum wheels, air conditioning, power windows and locks, remote keyless entry with alarm, cruise control, audio with CD, tilt steering wheel, rear window defogger, remote trunk release, map lights and driver information center.

Gas Stats: $2.75/ Gal avg.

2006 Chevrolet HHR (617)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2006 Chevrolet HHR – GM’s answer to Chrysler’s PT Cruiser. It’s similarly priced and Chevy lovers now have an option to the Chrysler to own a retro styled car / truck – or what is SUV styling in today’s terms.

I drove this HHR to San Diego – actually Coronado for a stay at the Hotel Del Coronado for a little more nostalgia staying in a room that was built in 1888. Wow! Elton John would likely break into song and say “It’s still standing”! And indeed it is still standing even if the floors seem to go up and down where they shouldn’t.

And you know what, driving up to this world famous luxury hotel I felt as much at home in this Retro Chevy HHR as I would in a Cad or Jag or even a Bentley or Rolls Royce. Somehow the HHR seemed to fit the surroundings more appropriately than any of those.

General Info:

Parts – US

Assembly – Ramos Arizpe, Mexico

Class:  – Special Purpose

Cars: – Astro, Avalanche, Aveo, Aveo5, Cavalier, Cobalt, Colorado, Corvette, Equinox,     Express, Express Cargo Van, HHR, Impala, Malibu, Malibu Maxx, Monte Carlo,                Silverado 1500, 2500, 3500 and hybrid, SSR, Suburban, Tahoe, Trail Blazer and          Uplander.

1940 Chevrolet Sedan Delivery.

Public Service:

Boycott toll roads. It’s not what California has been all about. In the east and much of the rest of the country the people have been duped into accepting them. In the Newport Beach area of California Highway 73 is highway robbery.

In contrast Coronado and San Diego are linked by a huge bridge that was built as a toll bridge to accommodate the largest of war ships to pass under and to handle to ever growing number of commuters to and fro. Since its construction and opening in 1967 the cost of construction bonds have been retired and it is now toll free.

If you know the 73 roadway will return to a toll free California Highway please email the information to me. I’ll share that information with our readers.

Handling & Performance:

You’re not going to pull a big boat with this HHR but it is a great commuter with very good mileage numbers. I did a lot of highway driving miles and it is very comfortable. It’s a little slow off the line, but when you get rolling it is just fine. You won’t zip by traffic in a passing situation because it’s a bit sluggish at 143 horsepower where 0-60 mph is 8.5 seconds. You can get up to 85 mph in a quarter mile in about 17 seconds. It won’t do very well at the drags, but then you won’t suck up very much gas either. The standard engine is 2.2 liters but a 2.4 liter for 172 horsepower is available. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard and I tested the optional 4-speed automatic transmission.

Styling:

Retro is the thing for a lot of us whether old or young when it comes to car design. Take a look at the 1940 Chevrolet Sedan Delivery and you’ll see where the inspiration came from. Put some more windows, rake the front hood and wa-la you are in the 21st Century. Some things simply can’t be improved upon and this and the PT Cruiser are testimonials to that fact.

Fit and Finish:

I’m a little disappointed in the way components feel on the interior. Pushing some control buttons cause the plastic support to give a bit which is not as solid as it should be.

Cost:

This is where this car shines and you’ve got to wonder how they can build cars this inexpensively. In a world of $45,000 cars and SUVs being so common it is refreshing to be able to buy this HHR for as low as $16,000.

Conveniences and comfort:

Unlike the 1940 version this retro has comfortable bucket seats and electronics for a good sound system, auto trans, power seats and air conditioning. You’d have to spend a ton to restore the ’40 and for a few shekels you can own a new car for trouble free driving for a long time.

I noticed the arm rests are not very comfortable. OK, so I have boney elbows – how about you?

Storage compartment nooks and crannies are good.

Consumer Recommendation:

For the best comparison to the HHR retro Sedan Delivery / SUV test drive the PT Cruiser from Chrysler.

I could own this car and when I gave it more thought I concluded that for the same money as one high end SUV I could own this HHR as well as the Saturn Sky, 2-seat sport car, and have the best of all worlds. Think about that.

Recognized Competition:

Chevrolet HHR $15-16,000, Mazda 5 $17-19,000, Subaru Forester $22-28,000, Toyota Matrix $15-19,000, Scion xB $14,030, Chrysler PT Cruiser $14-29,000, Suzuki Aerio SX $14-17,000, Kia Spectra 5 $15,900, Pontiac Vibe $16,630, Honda Element $19-23,000.

Good News:

Good fuel economy, wonderfully retro styled and fantastic pricing for a daily driver.

Bad News:

Some cheaply made components, skimpy horsepower and discomfort from door armrests.

Standard Equipment:

2.2 or 2.4 liter ($650 more) inline 4-cylinder engine with 143 and 172 hp respectively, 5-speed manual transmission, touring suspension, power front disc and rear drum brake system, dual air bags, theft deterrent system, rear child seat latch system and door locks, daytime running lights (auto control), 16 inch aluminum wheels, dual breakaway power mirrors, intermittent front wipers, rear wiper, air conditioning, stereo with CD, MP3 playback and auxiliary input jack, reclining front bucket seats, power driver seat, 60/40 split folding rear seat, fold flat front passenger seat, tilt steering wheel, rear window defogger, power windows and locks, remote keyless entry, and cruise control.

Gas Stats:

Gas Stats: $2.80/ Gal avg.
