2007 Chevrolet Aveo LT 4-Door (648)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2007 Chevrolet Aveo LT 4-Door sedan. This is a great commuter in part because of the very good fuel economy but also because for a 4-door sedan the ‘price is right’.  I was reminding Richard and Huan (from South Korea) that the car they were riding in was built in Korea. It surprised them as much as it did me when I checked. We reflected on how the world is shrinking and how homogenous America truly is.

As I think of it, America is not only the land of opportunity; it also exports opportunity to the rest of the world. Labor in China, is vast and currently much of the labor force is at about 60-90 cents an hour. Of course it is all relative and the cost of living is comparable. In Korea, Huan says the monthly income of most workers is about $300 in South Korea so that’s about double the prevailing wage in China. In any case it is so far below wages in the US for example that it makes total economic sense to export jobs there.

As to the wisdom of exporting the assembly of vehicles in Korea for economic reasons there are, or should be other forces at work for us to reach out to the rest of the world. Use of such labor forces not only makes products more affordable it raises the standard of living in other parts of the world. Toyota has recently built a large manufacturing facility in Tecate, Mexico and provides housing and jobs for thousands. Thousands who feel no need to go across the border for work. But to balance out the intentions of Toyota (now the largest car company in the world) they have just completed a huge facility in San Antonio Texas and depending on the success of that plant they will build another there as well. The present one employs about 4,000 people.

General Info:

Parts – No information was available. Do you think they are Korean made parts?

Assembly – Bupyung Gu, IN Korea.

Class:  – Compact

Cars: – Avalanche, Aveo, Aveo 5, Cobalt, Colorado, Corvette, Equinox, Express, Express Cargo Van, HHR, Impala, Malibu, Malibu Max, Monte Carlo, Silverado 15,25 & 3500, Silverado Classic, Silverado Hybrid, SSR, Suburban, Tahoe, Trail Blazer & Uplander.

Observation:

Well the projections for the price of gas this summer are $4.00 per gallon. Ouch.

But it occurs to me that something good always comes from bad – in time. I believe people may well change their priorities and reduce their traveling by car to go somewhere that can be replaced by something closer to home. I think more people will go play softball in the local park, play board games at home and get closer to the family. I think they will get out in the back yard and plant a tree and BBQ a bunch of veggies (and a Rib Eye Steak for Richard).

Handling & Performance:

Back to the Chevy Aveo. The Crest Test was pretty convincing that it will keep up with the craziest of drivers around some of the hairiest turns in the world.

Styling:

Commuter basic – but with a reasonable amount of roominess. In fact it passed my first cargo area test – my golf clubs (oversized bag) fits just right in the trunk.

Fit and Finish:

Consistent with even more expensive cars for which you’d pay three times the price of this Aveo to notice any significant difference in attention to detail.

Cost:

Less is more in many ways. This compact Aveo is less comfortable than a large sedan, but it costs less to buy and operate and that should be the guideline for a commuter or simply a trouble free new transportation car for a young family or anyone with a limited budget. A new car ‘can’ be affordable.

Conveniences and comfort:

I must report that you will be aware of your seat bottom all too soon. I think they could have put a little more padding in the seats because after about an hour I am beginning to get a little uncomfortable. I wish car makers would pay attention to simple details. One example of out of touch little things is not providing sun visors that extend for side window use.

Consumer Recommendation:

If on a limited budget this is a great transportation car. I wouldn’t want to drive straight through from LA to Denver, but it is fine for the short hops.

Recognized Competition:

Chevrolet Aveo  $12-14,000, Hyundai Accent $10-14,000, Toyota Yaris $11-14,000, Honda Fit $14-16,000, Ford Focus $14-17,000, Kia Rio $11-13,000, Suzuki Aerio $14-17,000, Nissan Versa $13-15,000.

Good News:

Well priced is the most obvious, very good on fuel and it can carry 5 passengers.

Bad News:

It is not the most comfortable car for long hauls, sun visors will but you.

Standard Equipment:

1.6 liter inline 4 cylinder 103 horsepower engine, 4-speed auto trans, front disc rear drum brakes, power rack & pinion steering, independent front strut suspension with stabilizer bar and rear torsion beam, stainless steel exhaust, front and side airbags, rear child seat latch system, daytime running lights, power heated fold away mirrors, 15” aluminum wheels, intermittent wipers, air conditioning, rear window, tilt steering column, remote keyless entry with alarm, cruise control, power windows and locks, reclining cloth seats with lumbar support, stereo with CD/MP3 player, 60/40 rear split folding seat, remote trunk and fuel filler releases.

2007 Chevrolet Impala SS Sedan (647)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2007 Chevrolet Impala SS Sedan which is the top of the lineup for Impala. And you know when you slide into the saddle, put the pedal to the metal you sense immediately these ponies want to run. Ever ridden a horse that sweats just standing there? That’s the feeling you get in this SS. It brings back memories of the muscle cars of yesteryear, and I’m sure that’s precisely what GM wants you to feel.

Dodge Charger and the New Mustang and of course the return of the Camaro all point to the perceived interest by the consumer for these kinds of cars. And the buzz in the air of auto enthusiasts says they are exactly right about that. When people talk about the driving experience of such performance cars there is excitement in their voice. I believe that is because we’ve had a streak of boring vehicles over the past couple of decades. Ho Hum just doesn’t get it and at the end of the day we really want some excitement in our driving needs. After all we spend a lot of time in our autos commuting, week ending, vacationing and just out for the proverbial Sunday drive. So they should be fun and interesting cars.

General Info:

Parts – US/Canadian 90%

Assembly – Oshawa, Ontario, Canada.

Class:  – Large

Cars: – Avalanche, Aveo, Aveo 5, Cobalt, Colorado, Corvette, Equinox, Express, Express Cargo Van, HHR, Impala, Malibu, Malibu Max, Monte Carlo, Silverado 15,25 & 3500, Silverado Classic, Silverado Hybrid, SSR, Suburban, Tahoe, Trail Blazer & Uplander.

Handling & Performance:

The first thing you notice when accelerating is that you feel the steering wheel tug at your hands. Front wheel drive does that and I have to admit I prefer rear wheel drive with such a responsive 303 horsepower V8 (the first since 1996). The ride is smooth and solid and a nice feel. There are rumors GM is considering a rear wheel drive in this cars future.

The other noticeable difference from the muscle cars of old and this is that even with all the power and performance you get decent fuel economy if you avoid jack rabbit starts.

The company touts this SS small block V8 as the fastest Impala SS in its history since unveiling in 1958.

Styling:

Classic performer.

Fit and Finish:

Very good.

Cost:

Boy, these guys must stay up nights figuring how much their cars should cost. Computers make life boring in a lot of ways and take all the fun out of cost accounting. I have to say that pricing is truly a function of cost to put these things together. Then they add a badge to push the price up for no other reason than it is in demand. There you go, ‘supply and demand’ supply side economics at work. It is that simple. Or is it?

Conveniences and comfort:

Child safety stuff on a muscle car sounds like a contradiction, but even race drivers have kids. If you go GM be sure you consider OnStar and XM radio. Two great features. And the cost for ‘Turn by turn’ an OnStar add-on is a great way to get navigation help for much less money than other screen based systems and with OnStar you talk to a real person. Novel idea don’t you think?

Consumer Recommendation:

If a muscle car isn’t necessarily your thing I suggest you look closely at the new Saturn Aura. I will be reporting on it in the next few weeks, but I drove it for a couple of days last week and also at a roll out in San Diego months ago. The Aura is a sleeper – and sure to gain favor with lots of folks especially with the enticing come out pricing.

Recognized Competition:

Chevrolet Impala $21-28,000, Saturn Aura $20-24,000, Hyundai Sonata $17-23,000, Buick LaCrosse $22-27,000, Pontiac Grand Prix $22-29,000, Toyota Camry $18-28,000, Honda Accord $19-30,000, Mitsubishi Galant $19-27,000, Mazda 6 $19-27,000, Mercury Montego $24-29,000, Ford Five Hundred $23-28,000, Chrysler 300 $24-40,000, Dodge Charger $21-36,000, Subaru Legacy $20-34,000, Volkswagen Passat $23-32,000, Nissan Altima $18-28,000.

Good News:

Improved fuel economy in a performance car, silky smooth ride to boot.

Bad News:

Curious 4-speed trans… I expected 5 or 6 speed.

Standard Equipment:

Standard Equipment: 5.3 liter 303 hp V8 engine, 4-speed automatic transmission, performance suspension, stainless steel exhaust, OnStar 1 year safe and sound (turn-by-turn can be added), 4-wheel ABS disc brake system, traction control, tire pressure monitor, dual front air bags, head curtain side air bags front and rear, auto headlights, power windows and locks, rear child seat latch system with rear child door locks, lock out protection, 18” aluminum wheels, performance tires, power mirrors, fog lights and SS rear spoiler, tilt steering wheel with cruise and audio controls, lighted visor mirrors, 8-way driver power seat, remote vehicle start, dual zone air conditioning, stereo with CD/MP3 player, XM satellite radio (3 mos included) and rear flip and fold flat seat.

2007 Saturn Aura 4-Door Sedan (646)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2007 Saturn Aura that is clearly a contender for top honors. In fact I’ll be bullish and say this is perhaps the top of the field in this class. It is built on a German Opel platform and is finally a serious Mid Size Sedan for Saturn.

Saturn’s outstanding reputation for friendly dealers has been a plus from the consumer. They have eliminated the high pressure image of “Car Salesmen”.

On the product front Saturn continues to impress me with new entrants like this Aura and the very popular Sky sports car. The roll out of the product last year was impressive too. The people at the top of Saturn and their staff are special people and have earned the reputation for advancing a first class product line.

Handling & Performance:

The Aura is quick and agile and built for a comfortable sedan ride. But it does great in the mountains and it handled the twists and turns of the Angeles Crest Highway with ease. The 252 horsepower V6 is no slouch either. Plenty of power when you need it.

Styling:

The styling by even the most critical is outstanding. I have to tell you my friend looked at this Aura and parked across the street was his $90,000 BMW. The color was different but the look was not $50,000 better. You could see the look on his face of revelation in consideration of comparative value. We concluded the satellite antenna was not painted to match the color of the car. Wow, interesting conclusion. Is that it? Can’t we come up with more than that? Should the antenna be mounted on the front of the car, as it is or on the back as the BMW has mounted it? Who really cares? And why is that the focus of our discussion of the differences in the car that is priced $65,000 less? I can think of a lot of things I could do with the difference.

Fit and Finish:

Quite good. Ok so we go from outstanding styling to Quite good attention to detail. Sorry, you can’t have it all and for the difference in price – you guessed it – there are some drawbacks. In this category I was disappointed with the armrests. After the great job they did with so much else why couldn’t they do a better job with making the armrests on the doors sturdier? Secondly there is no way to close the trunk without pushing it closed from the top. It gets you hands dirty or at the very least smudges the shine. It was apparent others also assumed the rubber spacer was provided to close the trunk as it fell off in my hand. The other side was tight so they failed to do the right thing here.

On the other hand the sun visors are thoughtful and slide out to cover more of the side sun. Thus the inconsistencies are baffling.

Cost:

Very competitive at a few grand less than Camry.

Conveniences and comfort:

Equal to the best and better than the perceived best for the money.

Consumer Recommendation:

If you are considering a Japanese Toyota Camry, drive this American alternative. Now that American Car Makers are #2 we’ll need to try harder as the head of Avis promoted and elevated his company.

Recognized Competition:

Saturn Aura $20-24,000, Toyota Camry $18-28,000, Pontiac G6 $27-37,000, Hyundai Sonata $17-23,000, Chevrolet Impala $21-28,000, Buick LaCrosse $22-27,000, Mazda 6 $19-27,000, Subaru Legacy $20-34,000, Honda Accord $19-30,000, Mitsubishi Galant $20-27,000, Nissan Altima $18-28,000, Kia Optima $16-20,000, Mercury Milan $19-25,000, Ford Fusion $17-24,000, Volkswagen Jetta $16-28,000, Chrysler Sebring (2008) $25-32,000.

Good News:

In the top of its class, wonderful styling, roomy inside and good size trunk, quiet smooth ride, thoughtful sun visors and decent fuel economy.

Bad News:

Does not utilize the no-rust dent resistant surfaces, cheap attention to detail in a few areas.

Standard Equipment:

3.6 liter 252 HP V6 engine, 6-speed automatic trans, steering wheel mounted paddle shifting, 4-wheel ABS power disc brakes, front and side curtain passenger sensing air bags and outboard rear side impact bags, daytime running auto headlights, Stability control, child safety latch system, remote keyless entry and remote start system, tire pressure monitor and theft deterrent system, fog lights, power heated mirrors, 18” multi spoke aluminum bright wheels, auto air conditioning, 8-way driver power seat with lumbar support, power windows and locks, stereo with 6-CD / MP3 player, rear electric defogger, steering wheel radio controls, rear seat audio controls with wireless headphones, cruise control, auto dimming mirror with compass, tilt & telescopic steering wheel.

2007 Saturn Outlook AWD XR (645)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2007 Saturn Outlook AWD XR SUV. Wow – Saturn and luxury SUV in the same sentence seems unlikely but this is it.

It will strike you I believe, as it did me, to be up there with more expensive competition. I appreciate that and am pleased to bring that thought to you as well and encourage you to take a look and support American car companies. Toyota is rapidly overtaking GM in not only the most profitable but the largest of car manufacturers. That almost seems un-American and it has been a long time coming that the US auto industry is back. Surely they will suffer from the historical arrogance that typified the attitude a generation ago.

General Info:

Parts – n/a

Assembly – Lansing, MI USA

Class: – Special Purpose

Cars: – Aura / Green line hybrid, Ion, Outlook, Relay, Sky and Vue / Green line hybrid.

Handling & Performance:

All wheel drive makes a great difference most noticeable for me, of course, on the Crest Test mountain driving.  General road ability makes the Outlook very enjoyable to drive because it hugs the road very well for a big high profile vehicle.

Unlike the paddle tip tronic shifting style manual automatic transmission feature on, say the Aura, this Outlook model utilizes the manual setting shift button on the shift lever. I thought it was fine and find the paddle style can be frustrating as you hunt for the paddles in the middle of a turn.

Styling:

Comparable with most high end luxury makes and models. Nice lines. Over 200 inches long which allows for a reasonable cargo area even with all seating rows in place? They have also provided air conditioning for the rear area seating area.

Fit and Finish:

Exceptional, although many will claim there is too much plastic. But that is consistent with most competitors and keeps the cost from escalating needlessly. Elegant look and feel of more expensive makes and models.

Cost:

Clearly it is competitively priced with even the most popular makes.

Conveniences and comfort:

Outstanding. I’m not crazy for the remote start feature but have used it in colder climates where it is nice to let it warm up while you’re in the comfort of your home.

Consumer Recommendation:

Don’t leave this out of your buying options. Saturn is a special kind of dealership experience and that too is a factor in your buying decision of a new car.

Recognized Competition:

Saturn Outlook $27,32,000, Mazda CX-7 $24-28,000, GMC Envoy $27-37,000, Dodge Durango $26-36,000, Subaru B9 Tribeca $30-33,000, Hyundai Santa Fe $21-28,000, Toyota Highlander $25-32,000, Honda Pilot $27-35,000, Mitsubishi Outlander $21-25,000, Nissan Murano $28-32,000, Mercury Mountaineer $27-34,000, Ford Freestyle $26-31,000.

Good News:

Excellent FWD handling prowess, 3rd row seat for 8 passenger seating with easy entry feature and powerful V6 engine.

Bad News:

Does not utilize the no-rust dent resistant surfaces.

Standard Equipment:

3.6 liter 270 HP V6 engine, 6-speed automatic trans all wheel drive, power steering, ride & handling suspension, stability control, traction control, dual air bags, side curtain airbags, passenger sensing system, child safety latch system, power windows and locks, OnStar 1 year included, theft deterrent system, remote keyless entry, fog lights, roof rails, rear lift gate, power heated mirrors, 18” machine aluminum wheels, cloth front bucket seats, 8-way driver power seat, 2nd & 3rd row split bench seat, smart slide 2nd row feature, climate control, stereo with CD / MP3 player, rear electric defogger, cruise control, auto dimming mirror with compass, tilt & telescopic steering wheel. Options: leather heated (front), power lift gate, ultrasonic rear park assist, remote start feature, heated wiper fluid, 115 volt outlet, rear seat audio controls, touch screen navigation system, XM satellite radio (3 months included) – $5,994.

2007 Saturn Vue FWD Hybrid (644)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2007 Saturn Vue FWD Hybrid which of course is a cross breed with an Inline 4-cylinder internal combustion engine with a battery backup – of sorts.

As you read this review consider emailing me with a testimony of your experience with a Saturn, OnStar or anything else. I’ll include your comments in future issues that will surely help others to avoid costly mistakes when buying their new car.

Over the past 15 years I have been unable to review the cars new and then go back and drive that car after several years of use, so your comments could add a dimension toe my reviews that others would like to hear your experience over time. Share those feelings and we can add some balance from your views.

Observation:

Traffic enforcement – I watched with amazement that a traffic cop ignored a slow driver obstructing the flow of cars lined up behind that slow traveler. Yes it was an old man and even if the cop just gave him a warning at least he would be made aware of the dangers of driving much slower than the normal flow of traffic. If they are not admonished they surely would cause road rage and frustration of average drivers who then make poor decisions to pass. How many accidents are caused by slow drivers? I suspect it is a very high percentage. For those who fit this category of slow drivers remember when you took your driving written exam one of the questions may have been letting you know that if 5 or more cars are being held up by you, you are to pull over and let them pass. And there are posted signs everywhere that state “Slower traffic use right lane”

I encourage you to be “aware” and “courteous” by pulling over to a slower lane or turn out when others want to pass. I do it all the time especially when I’m in no hurry or just out for a stress free drive. And you know what, I feel better when I am considerate to others who are sharing the road with me. Try it – you’ll like it too.

Handling & Performance:

With the rising gas prices that yo-yo up and down and up and up and up and down and up again, it is comforting to know that I can drive over 30 miles on one gallon of gas. And the nice thing is most Hybrids don’t give up any perceptible performance.

Styling:

I rather like the size of this Vue because it fits so many, especially small young families.

I do however believe they could have done better with the interior design. I found the armrest for the driver to be obstructive in mountain driving where there are many turns. I routinely give these cars what I call the Crest Test from northern desert towns to the southern cities of Los Angeles . The arm rest was annoying and it is obvious those who test drove the car for production and design simply ignored the obvious flaw. I’m average height and weight but of course they could have used jockey’s do the testing. Well…. It’s possible.

Fit and Finish:

Quite good and the dent resistant side panels really do work which has been a feature of this one car company. As you may recall there is a price the designers must deal with which is the seams which can’t have as close tolerances as with non-flex surfaces. It is however, in my opinion a small price to pay for those who get crazy by inconsiderate drivers in parking lots or run away shopping carts that cause dings and dents on most car surfaces.

Cost:

Quite good for a hybrid. Prices seem to be coming down for this ecologically responsible auto option for us all – not just the green peace folks. Al Gore will love you. Gee I wonder if he drives a Hybrid?

Conveniences and comfort:

Very good. I continue to give high marks for OnStar communication on GM cars. I particularly like the “Turn-by-turn” feature for navigation and have used the system many times for assistance with directions, finding a gas station late at night, finding a particular store or getting out of potential trouble by making a wrong turn into a questionable neighborhood. Somehow having a real person to talk to in this day and age is comforting and rare.

I think the pull out organizer in the rear cargo area is helpful to keep groceries etc. from flying around. Very cool.

Consumer Recommendation:

Consider adding the OnStar convenience on your next car purchase.

Recognized Competition:

Saturn Vue $22,870, Mazda CX-7 $24-28,000, Hyundai Santa Fe $21-28,000, Chevrolet Equinox $22-29,000, Pontiac Torrent $22-24,000, Subaru Forester $21-27,000, Jeep Liberty $22-28,000, Toyota RAV4 $21-27,000, Honda CR-V $21-28,000, Mitsubishi Outlander $21-25,000, Nissan Xterra $20-28,000, Mercury Mariner Hybrid $26-28,000, Ford Escape Hybrid $25-27,000.

Good News:

Very good fuel economy, ecologically responsible, dent resistant technology, OnStar availability with “Turn-by-turn” feature and a thoughtful cargo organizer.

Bad News:

Design flaw in the arm rests but not much else to complain about. Sorry.

Standard Equipment:

2.4 liter inline 4-cylinder 170 hp engine, hybrid system with electric motor generator unit, regenerative brakes, 4-speed auto trans, 4-wheel independent suspension, 100,000 mile oil change interval, extended hybrid component warranty, OnStar 1 year service, dual front airbags, passenger sensing system, daytime running auto lights, traction control, child safety rear door locks, rear window washer wiper, theft deterrent system, air conditioning with filtration system, power windows and locks, steering wheel audio controls, compass and temperature indicators, cruise control, fold flat passenger seat back, 70/30 split folding rear seat, remote keyless entry, fold away rear cargo organizer and dent resistant body side panels.

2007 GMC Acadia FWD SLT-1 (643)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2007 GMC Acadia FWD SLT-1 SUV. Your guess is as good as mine what they meant by SLT. Sounds a little nasty so I emailed GM to ask and no reply received to publication date. If you know what the acronym stands for please email me. It must be descriptive of the character of this Sport Ute in some way.

As to the definition of the new edition name Acadia (in French Acadie) was the name given by the French to a territory in northeastern North America which includes parts of eastern Quebec, the Maritime provinces and modern-day New England stretching as far south as Philadelphia. Why I haven’t a clue.

General Info:

Parts – n/a

Assembly – Lansing , MI USA

Class:  – Special Purpose

Cars: – Acadia, Canyon, Envoy, Savana & Cargo van, Sierra 1500, 2500 HD, 3500, Classic     1500, 2500 HD, 3500 and Hybrid, Yukon , Denali and Yukon XL.

Rumor has it:

Ok, this has nothing to do with rumor. It is factual that by some accounts you are 60 times safer on the battle fields of Iraq than you are on the highways and by-ways of America in your car or truck. That’s correct – in 2005 there were 39,189 fatal crashes or 3,300 deaths per MONTH. It has taken 5 years to kill that many soldiers in our much publicized war to free that Middle East people. Since most all of us have to travel by car we don’t really want to think about it – but it’s true. This statement is based on numbers of deaths only and you can make a case that based on the percentages of numbers of people who drive versus the number of people serving in Iraq the percentage view indicates it is more dangerous on the streets of Iraq . But you know what I mean. In any case that doesn’t include drive by shootings and road rage – in L.A. alone.

Buckle up and try to keep the rubber side down – it’s a battle out there.

But on another front we’re hearing more bad news about our beloved car maker Honda. Just when you think someone is beyond unethical behavior you learn Honda is being accused of engineered odometers to cheat us consumers. If true – shame on Honda. Wow, could it be my trust was misplaced? Burst my bubble Honda. I don’t trust governments – but from Honda and my wife – I expect more.

Handling & Performance:

This is not much of a mountain goat but on flat terrain it is a nice road car. It is quiet and luxurious and it is a high and wide riding SUV that is comfy.

Styling:

They have designed it to be quite striking and expensive looking. Well, it isn’t cheap but not bad for a heavily equipped solid riding luxury SUV.

Fit and Finish:

Excellent

Cost:

It is a good value in a class of equally good product.

Conveniences and comfort:

Perhaps the most interesting if not the best adaptation of the navigation systems of today is GM’s turn-by-turn feature as an add-on to OnStar. Just press the blue button give them the address you’re going to and they locate you and your destination and record the route that is then played back on your journey just before you’ll need to make a turn. It is totally hands free and somewhat more personalized. Of course that was an after thought to the very helpful OnStar real person service system to help you with a host of services. They’ll find a gas station or restaurant or almost anything you need. In an emergency they’ll be there to help as well.

Consumer Recommendation:

Although it doesn’t show up in the recognized competition I would put Chrysler Pacifica in this class and feel it is very similar to this Acadia . Add the Pacifica to your list of SUVs to your search.

Recognized Competition:

GMC Acadia $29-37,000, Dodge Durango $26-36,000, GMC Envoy $27-37,000, Mercury Mountaineer $27-34,000, Toyota 4Runner $28-38,000, Honda Pilot $27-35,000, Nissan Murano $28-32,000, Hummer H3 $29-38,000, Hyundai Santa Fe $21-28,000, Subaru B9 Tribeca $30-33,000, Ford Explorer $25-35,000.

Good News:

Large spacious and comfortable stylish adaptation of the Sport Utility that looks like more money than you’ll pay.

Bad News:

High profile and soft suspension reduces handling in the curves, only fair fuel economy even if not less than others in class. Manufacturers need to do better with fuel performance.

2007 Jeep Patriot Sport 4X2 (642)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2007 Jeep Patriot Sport 4X2 SUV with genes from the very beginning of “auto time” for one of a handful of the most recognizable of car products on the market.

Yes it is basic and yes it gets great fuel economy and no it doesn’t cost a lot of money to own it. Come on – we all know there is no free lunch. Someone has to pay for the goodies and gadgets. In this case you will have to push them to take your money for options like power windows and door locks. Basic is not a bad thing in transportation.

General Info:

Parts – n/a

Assembly – USA

Class: – Special Purpose

Cars: – Commander, Compass, Grand Cherokee, Liberty , Patriot and Wrangler.

Rumor has it:

Daimler-Chrysler may be selling the Chrysler division and the word is that Toyota may be the buyer. Good news for consumers and Toyota would be smart to do just that. I would hope, however, that Toyota would bring as much to Chrysler as Mercedes Benz has. But whoever is responsible Chrysler has done some pretty great things over the past several years. Bold design in their products such as the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger and the warmly embraced PT Cruiser are examples of a great car company. The Plymouth prowler is classic and I wish it would be resurrected.

Handling & Performance:

Very adequate because I didn’t miss those jack rabbit starts and I surely didn’t miss frequent stops at the gas pump, but I did miss not having cruise control since I do a lot of highway driving. Basic cars however do NOT need to give up good steering or responsive well performing engines and transmissions. Having traction and stability controls is a great inclusion in the standard equipped base model of this Patriot.

Styling:

Basic Jeep. You’ll see the unrefined look as you do in the Wrangler and styles of early day Jeeps. That’s not a bad thing and in a sense this Patriot is just a larger Wrangler and roomier and more basic than the Liberty which is smaller but gussied up a little more than this Patriot.

Fit and Finish:

Good in class.

Cost:

The equipment list is short and sweet and to the point so if you don’t need it you don’t get it. But you don’t pay for it either.

Conveniences and comfort:

You will have to be willing to drive a car with hand crank roll up windows, manual seat adjustment, no navigation system, no leather seating and no power seat adjustment. Sun roofs are unavailable as well.

Consumer Recommendation:

If you’re not turned off by now you, like me, are a Jeep devotee. The Patriot may not have all the bells and whistles of many up-scaled SUVs but it does have some very important things like controls for traction and stability (roll over protection) that come standard.

Sometimes owning a car is more than simply the name or even a perception of quality. Often it is a tradition or historical strength that evolves over a long time that draws people to own a car, truck or any other motorized vehicle. Many years ago I attended a Jeep Jamboree outing that converted me to Jeep. I met devoted Jeep owners who were rugged individualists certain about the image of Jeep and the tradition and track record of a true off road vehicle. I drove every Jeep they made at the time over terrain I would have never imagined a car could negotiate. I gained confidence in the product. And after the mud, boulders and other obstacles we battled for several days as a group of 120 owners and journalists I took to the highways of New England for a week of other historic sites. And then there were the flashbacks of my Navy days and the Jeeps we drove.

Recognized Competition:

Jeep Patriot $14-21,000, Dodge Caliber $14-20,000, Chevrolet HHR $16-19,000, Pontiac Vibe $16,710, Toyota Matrix $15-17,000, Honda Element $19-23,000, Mazda 5 $18-21,000, Suzuki SX4 $18-16,000, Kia Spectra 5 $15,995.

Good News:

Bare bones basic equipment without the high cost of having it all, very good fuel economy and a consistent image.

Bad News:

Bare bones basic equipment so you’ll give up several creature comforts (but eating is still allowed).

Standard Equipment:

2.4 liter 172 horsepower 4-cylinder engine, 5-speed manual transmission, 4-wheel ABS disc brakes, traction control, stability control, air conditioning, tilt steering wheel, Second row folding seat, and radio with CD player.

2007 Chrysler Pacifica Touring FWD (641)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2007 Chrysler Pacifica Touring FWD SUV. Brother John just drove down from Oregon for a family event in their Pacifica so I asked how they like it.

“It’s been a great car and we take it on most all family trips, unless we’re pulling a trailer then we use the Dodge Ram 3500 diesel”.  John and I owned an automotive repair shop in La Canada, CA for 12 years after 8 years of brake system manufacturing. I trusted John’s opinion when it came to the mechanical stuff  and I always bought the cars John endorsed and this is the best testimony I could ever give for readers to test drive this Chrysler.

General Info:

Parts – US/Canadian 83%, Engine and Transmission – US.

Assembly – Windsor, Ontario, Canada

Class:  – Special Purpose

Cars: – 300, Aspen, Crossfire, Pacifica, PT Cruiser, Sebring and Town & Country.

Observation:

… and speaking of privacy glass I can’t help but wonder what weirdo is housed in that blackened car I see on our highways. Are they ugly or simply very insecure, criminals and gang bangers. Surely if they were celebrities they would be in a limo. Oh well – I guess it doesn’t matter anyway since I never have time to people watch at 70 mph.

Handling & Performance:

Performance is brisk and responsive but I did notice subtle acceleration surges that annoyed me. And I was not impressed with the fact that the parking brake light stayed on (on one occasion) even though I had fully released the brake. The brakes are also a bit on the grabby side but with only 3,000 miles on the car both of these issues would go away with a few more break in miles.

Styling:

I think it is first class styling and is one of the most beautiful SUV’s on the market at “Any” price.

Fit and Finish:

Very good.

Cost:

Of all in class this is one of the most affordable and delivers a lot of value for your purchasing dollar.

Conveniences and comfort:

No complaints at all.

Consumer Recommendation:

You may recall that one of my personal vehicles is a Dodge Ram 3500 with 265,000 miles. I tell it like it is and although I had some things to pick on them about, Chrysler sits in my driveway and OVERALL they are good products fairly priced.

And if I haven’t mentioned it, I have a new best friend. My diesel mechanic Darrin (first time I’ve used him thanks to my neighbor Buddy B.) but I was very pleased. I let him figure the problem out and my contacts at Chrysler did some research and came up with the same diagnosis that fixed the issue. If you want to know more about his repair shop in Burbank contact me and I’ll be happy to share his company and phone. The easiest way is to email me at joe@atthewheel.com.

Recognized Competition:

Chrysler Pacifica $24-36,000, Mazda CX-7 $24-28,000, Lexus RX 350 $37-39,000, Audi Q7 $40-60,000, Ford Freestyle $26-31,000, GMC Envoy $27-37,000, Buick Rendezvous $25-29,000, Cadillac SRX $37-43,000, Volvo XC-90 $36-49,000, Nissan Murano $28-32,000, Subaru B9 Tribeca $30-33,000, Acura MDX $40-48,000, BMW X5 $46-55,000, Saturn Outlook $27-32,000, Infiniti FX $38-50,000, Dodge Durango $26-36,000.

Good News:

Quick, great styling, well priced, roomy family SUV, decent fuel economy.

Bad News:

Jerky acceleration and grabby brakes.

Standard Equipment:

4.0 liter 253 horsepower V6 engine, 6-speed automatic transmission, front air bags and side curtain bags in all rows, driver side knee bolster air bag, Electronic Stability Program, 4-wheel ABS power assist disc brake system, auto stick trans, cruise control, information center, theft deterrent, load leveling, tire pressure monitor and warning signal, climate control with air filtration, power windows and locks, tilt steering wheel, wheel mounted audio controls, stereo with CD changer, 200 watt amplifier , 6-passenger seating, 10-way driver and 4-way passenger power seats, remote keyless entry with security alarm, sunscreen glass, power heated mirrors and rear window wiper washer. 2007 Dodge Caliber R/T AWD (640)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2007 Dodge Caliber R/T All-Wheel-Drive crossover. The R/T comes with AWD. Other models are front wheel drive propelled. It is roomy with lots of head room as well.

Great family vehicle in all respects.

General Info:

Parts – US/Canadian 63%, Mexico 22%, Engine – US, Transmission – Mexico.

Assembly – Belvidere, Illinois, USA

Class: – Compact Cars

Cars: – Avenger, Caliber, Caravan, Charger, Dakota, Durango, Magnum, Nitro, Ram 15, 25 & 3500, Sprinter Van, Sprinter Wagon and Viper.

Handling & Performance:

Performance is quite good but you will hear the engine that powers this compact. I wonder when they’ve done so many things so well, why they didn’t quiet the mechanical a little better. Here in the US gas will fuel the power plant but it will be offered in Europe and other foreign markets with turbo diesels where more than half of the cars are diesel. Now that is Smart. But even the US gas burner version will get pretty good mileage. I would like to see Americans buy more diesel products and push a movement to “Clean Diesel” model availability in the US.

My ranch truck with 265,000 miles is a diesel and most diesel owners will tell you that is just getting broken in. It is a very popular Dodge Ram 3500 dual real wheel and will haul a house if called upon. It is awesome and even with 15 large bales of hay stacked up it will still pull that house.

I prefer more road steering feel but this Caliber is a little loosy goosy feeling. I did get used to it but still prefer more feel.

Styling:

In keeping with Chrysler bravado in design this Caliber also makes an original and contemporary statement. I like it. How about you?

Fit and Finish:

Quite good and exceptional in class.

Cost:

Like most Chrysler products this Caliber is verrry affordable. I’m always impressed mostly because price hasn’t increased in proportion with the quality and design improvements of this American car company.

Conveniences and comfort:

The console has lighted cup holders that are really very cool and it makes me wonder why that nice touch isn’t seen on any other cars.

I found the ignition location annoying.

Standard in the R/T is a unique Chill Zone storage area for keeping up to 4 – 20 ounce bottles or cans cool.

Consumer Recommendation:

In my opinion this Caliber is the best of the bunch listed here, so it is a must drive inclusion in your search. Try it, you’ll like it.

Recognized Competition:

Dodge Caliber $14-20,000, Mazda 3 $14-20,000, Honda Civic $15-25,000, Ford Focus $14-17,000, Pontiac Vibe $16,710, Chevrolet Cobalt $13-20,000, Nissan Sentra $15-18,000, Hyundai Accent $10-14,000, Acura RDX $33-36,000, Subaru Impreza Wagon $18-27,000, Kia Rio5 $13,750, Toyota Matrix $15-17,000.

Good News:

Perky performance, nice styling, well priced, versatile roomy family alternative and good fuel economy.

Bad News:

Poorly positioned ignition, noisy engine.

Standard Equipment:

2.4 liter 172 horsepower 4-cylinder engine, continuous variable transaxle auto transmission, dual front air bags and front and rear side curtain airbags, 4-wheel power assist ABS disc brakes, power windows, solar control glass, rear window defroster, theft deterrent system, rear window wiper washer, power mirrors, speed sensitive power locks, cruise control, 12 volt and 115 volt aux power outlets, air conditioning with Chill Zone storage, front passenger fold flat seat, rear fold flat seat, with rear 60/40 split reclining seat, stereo with CD player, leather wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, tilt column, illuminated cup holders, lift gate and fog lights.

2007 Dodge Nitro SLT 4X2 (639)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2007 Dodge Nitro SLT 4X2 SUV. What do you think? Well, take a look at the price before you answer that. And don’t consider the recent news rumors of Daimler Chrysler wanting to sell the Chrysler division. Don’t also look at the staying power of Chrysler over the years when others thought it would die.  Mercedes says they aren’t making money. But the accountant in me says, so what?! Who’s fault – Mercedes or Chrysler? What’s going on behind the scenes is what interests the auditor in me.

In any case none of that is in defense of Chrysler and I do feel all things work to good… and we may find another influence on Chrysler could be even more beneficial than was Mercedes-Benz on them. Hard to imagine, but it could be.

I believe the affiliation has been very good and that isn’t about to go away any time soon.

General Info:

Parts – US/Canadian 76%

Assembly – Toledo, Ohio, USA

Class: – Special Purpose

Cars: – Avenger, Caliber, Caravan, Charger, Dakota, Durango, Magnum, Nitro, Ram 15, 25 &           3500, Sprinter Van, Sprinter Wagon and Viper.

Observation:

Even notice no matter how fast you drive there are always others who are compelled to travel even faster. This fact supports the need for traffic control measures (tickets that cause monetary punishment). Of course the problem is that if you continue to speed up others do as well and as you ratchet up faster and faster one or more will exceed their ability to control the car and then – CRASH! And if there is a coming together of two drivers exercising poor judgment the real problem is the innocent often are pulled into the whole mess.

I test most cars on a race track so I don’t feel the need to prove I’m Mario Andretti on our public roads. Perhaps the State should set up track days for those who’d like to put their driving skills to the “Real” Test without endangering others. The cost of providing such facilities would be less costly to society in the long run. For the older generation you’ll recall drag racing in the 1950s and 1960s that gave an outlet to blow off steam.

Handling & Performance:

The accelerator is not as smooth as I like and I experienced a leap forward at the slightest touch of the pedal. The brakes were a little grabby on the other end as well. But I did notice I adjusted to the over sensitive feel of both acceleration and braking by the end of the weeks testing. Another explanation for the sensitive controls could be the newness of components.

Styling:

Square-ish – but that seems to be the in thing these days. Fashion and all that – because we get tired of any design in time and the car makers change to meet consumer expectations. I must admit I do appreciate variety and options.

Fit and Finish:

Very good for a product in this price range.

Cost:

Quite good. I liked the ride overall and warmed up even quicker when I saw the price.

Conveniences and comfort:

For the life of me I couldn’t find a valid use of the slide out floor in the rear cargo area. I’m sure they must have had some in mind and I’m told it allows you to put stuff on the shelf when pulled out and slide it in. I think it’s a wasted expense (that I as the consumer must pay for) – no thanks.

On the whole the standard equipment is outstanding. I say that because the cost of such things these days is very low and manufacturers should include a lot because everyone wants gadgets and goodies. And portable Navigation systems are getting so cheap a factory installed system is not needed at the high prices they ask.

Consumer Recommendation:

Surely this is a must drive for those about to make a purchasing decision. The Nitro surely gets high marks in the class.

Recognized Competition:

Dodge Nitro $19-27,000, Mazda CX-7 $24-28,000, Saturn Vue $17-24,000, Ford Edge $25-31,000, Pontiac Torrent $22-24,000, Chevrolet Equinox $22-29,000, Mitsubishi Outlander $21-25,000, Hyundai Santa Fe $21-28,000, Acrua RDX $33-36,000, Jeep Liberty $21-27,000, Kia Sorento $20-26,000.

Good News:

Well priced, good number of creature comforts and technical safety features like stability control and traction control are standard and very good to have. It is also roomy.

Bad News:

The ride is a little soft with touchy brakes and accelerator. For a 4X2 the fuel economy is not as good as I expected. Not terrible but I expect better.

Standard Equipment:

3.7 liter V6 engine, 4-speed auto trans, front and side air bags, LATCH child anchor system, traction control, electronic stability program, 4-wheel ABS power assisted disc brakes, theft deterrent system, remote keyless entry, speed sensitive power locks, cruise control, rear window defroster, tire pressure monitoring display, power windows & locks, 115 A/C and 12 volt outlets, air conditioning, leather wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, stereo with CD /MP3 player with 6 speakers, front passenger fold flat seat, tilt steering wheel, stain resistant cloth seats, rear split 65/35 folding seat, information center, overhead console, load and go slide out rear floor, compact spare tire, fog lights and power heated fold away mirrors.
