2008 Hyundai Accent SE (713)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2008 Hyundai Accent SE three door that has some pretty good Fuel Economy numbers. Small is beautiful today more than ever. But to American buyers small meant Porsche, Ferrari, and Corvette. Today with $5 / gallon gas small has been modified in the US. Less is better will resonate more every day.

It just goes to show you how much we have come to lean on large companies to tell us what’s ok, what we want and need. Friend Richard would say “It doesn’t have to be true to be a good story”. Amen Richard, you got that right.

General Info:

Parts –  US/Canadian 1%. Korea 99%.

Assembly – Ulsan, Korea

Class:  – Compact cars

Cars: – Accent, Azera, Elantra, Entourage, Santa Fe, Sonata, Tiburon, Tucson & Veracruz.

Handling & Performance:

Manual Transmission Pea Popper that will take you to your destination without any fan fare. But you’ll reach for your wallet much less often and keep food on the table and be able to buy shoes for the kids.

One thing I have to complain about is the gearing on this car. In Korea it may not be a problem, but on the highways of the rest of the world you’ll experience 4,000 rpm way too much. I believe the solution would be a longer high gear. 4th and 5th are too close together.

Styling:

Hyundai Accent is a Smart Car with a rear seat and larger cargo area and a little less in fuel economy. I like these two little cars but not for their beauty but rather for how practical they are.

They need to do some more work on the A/C vents. I don’t like the adjustments available.

Fit and Finish:

Good.

Cost:

Pricing is very competitive in class.

Conveniences and comfort:

This doesn’t have a built in hands free blue tooth but if you don’t already know about the portable kinds you can lose the ear piece “growth” hanging uncomfortably from the side of your head. The clip onto the visor versions only cost about $40 and work through your radio and will cost less than built in versions, and of course are movable.

Basic cars like this Accent keep cost down, in part, by smaller engines and eliminating features such as cruise control. That is a bad thing. I can give up a lot but cruise is not one of those. Traveling beyond a usual commute or around town stuff cruise becomes a necessity, not a luxury. However this is really a commuter and thus you rarely need cruise.

Consumer Recommendation:

My recommendation thus far has been to hang on to your big vehicles and don’t fall into the trap of dumping your big SUV at a huge loss. A knee jerk reaction and will surely be needlessly expensive.

Encourage your friends to support candidates who represent us who will push for more domestic drilling and watch the price of gas come back down to where you can drive that truck and SUV again until our friends in government and auto industry produce more fuel efficient vehicles for us to buy. Case in point is that past house speaker Newt Gingrich was right on when he said the price per barrel will go down by using the rainy day US reserves of oil thus eliminating being held hostage by mid east oil Sheiks and speculators.  In fact just the serious discussion had pulled the rug out from under those bad guys and the price per barrel dropped $20. I have news for our elected officials, it’s raining out there!

Look out for the quick fix to the fear of high gas prices. Don’t just buy a hybrid because it gets good mileage. Consider this Hyundai and Toyota Yaris instead of the higher demand Prius and other hybrids because the perception is they are better because they use alternate energy. They don’t get a lot more fuel economy and the cost of batteries and technology repairs is still unknown. Conventional looks better every time you take a closer look.

2008 Dodge Dakota Crew Cab TRX4 (712)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2008 Dodge Dakota Crew Cab TRX4 4X4 pick up truck. Generally I like pickup trucks and have had several personally and own one now (extra large Dodge Ram Dual rear wheel Cummins Diesel with 265,000 miles, which is just broken in).  I especially like the mid-size like this Dakota and if I didn’t have a need for Large, it would be a mid-size for me.

The very first thing I had to do was hanging some clothes in the back seat and wondered what idiot placed the hangers above the rear window that totally blocks your rear view. That foo-paw wasn’t mitigated by the very thoughtful nooks and cranny’s provided for all those things we seem to need at our finger tips. They even considered a spot for a cell phone if you happen to have one of those skinny ones which I don’t. My Blackberry  that does everything with a large display 8830 wouldn’t fit.

I just love the new vibrant colors, Chrysler in particular, paint their cars and trucks. This one was a bright yellow that people would easily mistake for days of “Bay Watch” (more commonly referred to as ‘Babe’ Watch) and if there were a couple of Orange rescue floats hanging over the side and babes clad in similarly colored life guard suits … ok, I’m day dreaming again… but the point is this is a great youthful truck with a color that gives it a special life of its own. If you want boring colors a move to China, where you’d disappear into the masses and be invisible. In high school my 55 Ford pick up truck was painted a stock Turquoise Blue. You gotta love those bold innovative days when cars had personalities. Thanks Chrysler for being brave with design to bring back a rainbow to cheer up our lives.

Observation:

I had to transport an open container with liquid in it and it occurred to me that is a good lesson on how we should drive. You find yourself following at a safe distance, you approach turns more carefully and then you notice traffic doesn’t really leave you in the dust anyway. You’ll burn less fuel too – life is good!

Handling & Performance:

I tested the 4.7 liter 302 hp V8, but unless you have a need for 0-60 in just over 7 seconds go for the 4X2 3.7 liter 210 hpV6 that will get one mpg better at 15-19.

Styling:

Typical Dodge tough image which is basically true, but if you look at the Nissan or Toyota trucks they are beefy too. Why? Because Dodge is. The US sets the pace and other runners fall in behind and rarely take the exhausting lead in design. Copy cats save a lot of energy and money, so as usual we Americans do the tough work and others benefit from our multi-cultural amazing machine. We have been leading the way in how things look and feel and function for over 100 years.

Fit and Finish:

Typical Dodge bulky, large gaps but neatly symmetrical. More finely assembled German and Japanese trucks are not necessary in a truck because they are built for the four letter word, ‘work’.

Cost:

The reason we cheerfully pay the price in this country without haggling is because we’ve been Americanized over the past few generations. And the reason isn’t that we’re more polite but rather I believe we’re simply amazed and thankful that anyone could build anything as cheaply as we have since Henry Ford production line. Thank you Henry Ford for the vision. Sure it seems obvious now, but everything does AFTER someone else has thought of it. Remember the old saying, “”Ever notice how much people know when you tell them something, and how little they know when you ask them something”?

For most uses this is the perfect size and if you don’t need a 4X4 the 4X2 with the 3.7 liter V6 will save you $3,000 on the initial purchase.

Conveniences and comfort:

If you want really back to basic, save money features you can even get crank / roll up windows that are rare in today’s world. The utility rails in the box are really great and I wouldn’t have a pick up without them.

Consumer Recommendation:

Lots to choose from but one has to wonder how long that will last. This class is perhaps the most profitable being made for all car companies and they have milked it to the hilt until someone decided to drive the price of oil up unnaturally. But this is a mid-size and that makes it a good option to a full size that is much more cumbersome. As soon as the people, we consumers, wise up and demand pumping domestically and cutting off mid east oil totally prices will drop quickly. Bottom line – don’t panic. But we should all work to demand more fuel efficient vehicles by some date, say ten years from now. If we can put men on the moon and return them safely we can do the same with renewable and clean energy. Where is JFK when you need a great leader?

2008 Dodge Durango SUV (711)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2008 Dodge Durango SUV. Ok, so SUV’s are a dirty name in today’s world, but for many it is the best vehicle to service their need. Friend Merkel did a lot of research to buy a fuel efficient family vehicle for wife FJ and young sons David and Simon. That 4-seat need resulted in choosing the Toyota Yaris with consistent performance of 38 mpg for them over the past year. FJ was on the last Olympic equestrian team and her teaching requires a big truck and at diesel fuel prices it is very costly to drive, but necessary for all the gear and pulling a horse trailer. In short, there is a need beyond “Want” that justifies individuals owning larger gas hogs.

Meanwhile Toyota will begin manufacturing the Prius in the US as soon as it is able to adjust its facilities to that production – they say about 3 months. With the slow down in truck based products all car makers will replace gas guzzlers with the growing demand for a shift to smaller cars. You likely are beginning to see the Smart Car on US highways and the shift will grow from here on out. Gas prices will not allow us to drive what we want to any longer as long as fanatic ecologists fight against smart energy like Nuclear and domestic pumping of oil estimated at a reserve of over 200 years worth in the ground. There should be a balance and those passionate ecology fighters should be placing their energy on pushing wind and other earth friendly sources of energy while we provide more domestic oil to refineries.

Observation:

e-mails I’ve received by many exclaim foreign oil use is simply “fueling” the anti American war machine. How could our leaders and “Real” Americans allow this to happen? With oil sands and shale in the US as touted by Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer we have all the oil we need for a very long time. Link follows:  http://www.business.mt.gov/govsenergypage.asp.

People tell me they are mad as hell that we over regulate every segment of our economy that seeks to delay developing alternate fuel technologies. True enough.

The minority puts great energy into fighting against off shore drilling, a teensy weensy part of Alaskan oil fields or anywhere there is an insect, bird, fish or plant that might be inconvenienced. Yet when farmers begin to switch to turning our valuable corn crops into

Bio fuel they don’t really care that the price of consumable corn takes food off tables.

Handling & Performance:

If power is important the 5.7 liter HEMI option will do the trick. 0-60 in about 7 seconds. A 4.7 liter 303 hp V8 is standard. But that power is available with fair fuel economy performance for such a big vehicle because of the Multi Displacement System (MDS) where it runs on 4 of the 8 cylinders when all 8 are not needed on the highway.

I won’t say this is a porpoise but remember the big Buick Road Master – that we lovingly referred to as a road hog. Well this reminds me of the rolling ride of yesteryear, like the shocks were shot.

Styling:

Typical design with Dodge tough guy look. It is interesting that you must be stopped to use the nav system but finding a radio station is far more difficult yet equally as distracting. I have a suggestion – put knobs back on radios.

Fit and Finish:

Outstanding, thanks to Daimler Chrysler ownership days and influence.

Cost:

Very good for serviceability level of this versatile vehicle with an exceptional features list. Once again you can save $3,000 by opting out of the Nav system and buy a portable version from Garmin or even Tom-Tom.

Conveniences and comfort:

Outstanding array of things that make life easier. The tire pressure monitor system has alerted me to impending problems on many occasions that often result in being able to take care of a problem before it hit me.

Consumer Recommendation:

There are lots of reasons why a larger vehicle is needed for many family functions. And you will have to be creative in how you travel. Your commute may mean driving a short way to the Metro Link for public transportation and save the difference in fuel cost back to the days when it was half today’s prices.

Above all, don’t panic, thinking you have to give up the big family car, truck or SUV. Just go out and buy another for those times when you don’t need that big car. I suggest you look closely at the Smart Car, Yaris and ask your Chevy dealer when the Volt will be available.

2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 Limited Edition (710)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 Limited Edition. Hearts will be breaking all over the world for those who want one and can’t have one. And I have to tell you I didn’t want to give this one back.

Well, what can you say? This is a very special car and it draws attention where ever you go. And why not. It is different in today’s world. It is Retro so it will also have huge following from all my friends from the 1970’s, as the Model A Ford sedan or 1957 Chevrolet I owned back in High School and beyond. Our youth then was somehow better because of the cars that embellished our lives. They came before girls. Go figure. And now that we’re older cars have once again taken top spot on our “Hit Parade”. You know what I mean! Of course you do.

Jay Leno has a great piece on this latest addition to his car collection at www.jaylenosgarage.com. Take a look and see his 1970 Challenger and the new 2008 version. My question to Jay is – Why the black one. The Orange is Awesome.

People looked at and admired this car whether young or old. I didn’t quite understand that except you have to assume the young admirers were attracted because the style of that era cars were memorable and compared to the cookie cutter computer generated cars of today they expressed art and style only a human can envision.

Traveling down the highway elicits every manner of interest including simple head turning, thumbs up, cameras out the window and great big smiles. People’s comments included awesome, cool, beautiful, love the color, whose car is this? is it out yet?, how much is it, and on and on.

A Mercedes Benz owner pulled over as I parked and was so impressed he was certain he’d add this to his small stable instead of the soon to be released Camaro. He was ok with the price, but I have to tell you this will sell well over sticker.

Friend Peter did a photo shoot for the Norwegian magazine AmeriCar. Der neue Dodge Challenger unter 20.000 Euro. Take a look see at  http://www.americar.de/inside/inside_artikel/id=152. Then we did another for V8 Magazine in Findland. They will be sad to hear that this limited edition may only allow a couple of them to be sent over there. They are huge fans of the American Muscle Car as are most in the world.

Handling & Performance:

If you have a need for speed as I often do this Challenger will impress every racing bone in your body. It will be as natural a high as you can get legally. Acceleration G force pins you back in the seat as you feel 0-60 mph in about 4 seconds. The Crest test delivered lots of fun and no Highway Patrol interruptions. I wish those guys would tell me when they’re going to be there. Then I could take my cars over another secret route over the San Gabriel Mountains. It has a solid tight ride that is light years ahead and better than any car of the 1960’s and 1970’s.

Styling:

This is reminiscent of my Happy Days experiences and conjures up visions of Dukes of Hazard Sitcom which featured a 1969 Charger but this Challenger looks more like General Lee than the Charger Retro of 2007. It truly represents an American Muscle Car Tradition – and now that Daimler sold Chrysler back to an American company it is again an American product. Thanks to the design folks who did themselves proud to present us with such a great classic at this time of boring “Robo-Cars”. “I never felt more proud to be an American”, and I’m not even running for office.

Fit and Finish:

Excellent.

Cost:

Not likely to sell at sticker price and you can bet the sales price will find its level based on supply and demand.

Conveniences and comfort:

All good stuff, and no comment needed here since buyers of this car won’t make a buying decision based on what creature comforts it has.

Consumer Recommendation:

From my youth to today’s youth everyone, including the lady buyers, loves this car. Don’t wait, if you’re interested, because it can only go up in price. Of the recognized competition the Mustang, of course, is the closest competitor and I suspect if you’re interested in this Challenger you’ll want to test drive the Ford Mustang.

2008 Mazda 5 Grand Touring AT (709)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2008 Mazda 5 Grand Touring AT. And for those of you who have driven Mazda’s you likely have an interest in what Mazda is doing. There isn’t a cult following per se, but it is certain that people do come back to what has worked for them. Me, I’ve always liked the product even though it doesn’t have the “Toyota” name that is marketed well.

If you’re new to Mazda you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the overall quality and workmanship of the vehicles they produce. And although this is not my favorite look it is not ugly either. Ok a little homely. Just goes to show you what computers will do. I think we’ve over done Computer Aided Designs and left out the human touches. Chrysler is the most innovative of all the car makers today and mixes the CAD systems with real people to come up with cars like the PT Cruiser, Plymouth Prowler, Dodge Challenger, Charger and the 300. Bravo Chrysler and I hope you keep it up.

Class:  – Minivans

Cars: – CX-7, CX-9, Mazda 3, 5 & 6, Mazdaspeed3 & 6, MX-5 Miata, RX-8, Tribute, Tribute Hybrid & Truck.

Handling & Performance:

I don’t know how they managed to do it, but I felt very annoyed with the touchy accelerator and brake pedals. Otherwise the 153 hp engine is very good and the gear ratios work well at all speeds. It was comfortable and easy to drive.

Styling:

Minivans are super convenient for entry and exit because of the sliding side doors, especially for those tight parking places. This however is a compact so all has been scaled down. I can’t say I’m thrilled with the look but they appear to have concentrated on function over form.

Fit and Finish:

Mazda good. Not spectacular but they are consistently good with obvious care that has always been a Japanese trait. I’m biased, I have to tell you, because I have experienced the exceptional work ethic of the Japanese when our Naval air Squadrons sea planes were refurbished in Japan. I was a crewmember and we’d take the planes to Japan from our base in the Philippines where we spent some time getting to know the people. Conclusion: People don’t start wars – power hungry politicians do it for profit.

Cost:

In the hunt but the competition is fierce and capable.

Features and Conveniences:

Standard stuff is very good and I’ve always found Japanese electronics to be user friendly and the exact opposite for German cars that have a need somehow to over complicate things. Again, although Nav and Satellite radio are options, I recommend buying them separately as aftermarket additions if you’re interested in saving money. In this case it will surely save about $2,000. In addition portable is just that – you can use them in any car. That even goes for Bluetooth devices that are “Really” cheap.

I have not tested the Honda Fit at this writing but all the competition is formidable. There are too few not to drive them all. Then I’m sure fuel economy will tip the scales for you as they will increasingly for most of us as gas prices rise. Me, I like the PT Cruiser for SUV type styling and the convenience of the Mazda 5 as a small family minivan.

2008 Mazda CX-7 Grand Touring FWD (708)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2008 Mazda CX-7 and although I like this vehicle I was a little surprised at the engine noise. It reminded me of Tim Allen in the Santa Clause movie and the line “there rose such a clatter”.

Secondly, with all my preaching over the years people still insist on buying fuel IN-efficient cars, and mostly it has been because of their love affair with the automobile. And even though I have preached to my kids as well (they never listen), I have to defend my son buying a big Tahoe SUV. Why? Because he has 4 kids. Count them and the parents and all the car seats for the three little ones and I get tired just thinking of it. Then throw in all the gear for a trip to grandma’s house over the river and through the woods and you have to question the wisdom of large families. Well, you get the point. Oh, I forgot the boat. Can’t pull a boat with a Toyota Yaris that gets an impressive 38 mpg. To my son Mike I suggest he think about a second car that most of us can actually afford to drive.

Fight back, I say. Buy a fuel efficient car and push the manufacturers to change the emphasis from profits alone as motivation in making cars we must buy. Yes, these big gas guzzlers are profitable. Ok, so they were profitable. Now you can’t give them away. Why, because people are worried about where gas prices may go. Remember the world price of gas is over $8.00 a gallon. Helloooo!

With nearly half of every car on the road today being a truck or SUV the turn around won’t be easy or fun for anyone. However, don’t panic. Keep the SUV, park it most of the time until you really need it and buy a Yaris, Prius, Hyundai Accent or wait for the new Chevy Volt Electric car.

Observation:

Well it’s the LAW now that you must use a “Hands Free” device while talking on your cell phone driving the car. It’s a good law most would agree but it’s a pain in the neck to “HAVE” to use it. Come-on, lets face it, either way when you’re on the phone in the car you have to know most of us can’t walk and chew gum at the same time. So why do we think we can drive a car safely and carry on a conversation on the phone? Think back and try to recall where you just traveled while on the cell phone? Bet you experienced a blank spot in your memory banks.

Handling & Performance:

You’ll enjoy driving this Mazda CX-7, I’m sure, but you won’t appreciate giving up performance and not getting any better fuel economy than it delivers. It is a perfect size for mobility and agility in most driving situations, but not as good on the open highway as the CX-9.

Styling:

Of course the CX-7 is just a cut below the CX-9 but it can save $10,000 in purchase price if you don’t need the extra 2 seats. Both are great looking and the crossover has been a natural evolution from the SUV. The CX-7 provides good cargo space and seating for five with that sport look rolled into the SUV convenience. It comes in 3 trims; Sport, Touring and Grand Touring that I tested.

Fit and Finish:

Very good.

Cost:

In the hunt in class.

Features and Conveniences:

Good compliment of useful standard equipment and features and eliminating expensive options can reduce the price $6,000 if you can do without the voice activated Navigation system, upgraded sound and entertainment systems and a few other minor items. Reminder – buy a portable Nav system instead, and consider the kids will probably be more interested in their new iPods and game boys etc.

2009 Mitsubishi Galant Ralliart 4 Dr. Sedan (706)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2009 Mitsubishi Galant Ralliart 4-Door Sedan. After writing about the stylishly exciting Dodge Challenger everything else seems a bit boring. But at about 15 average miles per gallon using the Challenger as a commuter is not practical for most of us. This Galant IS practical and realistic for general driving needs.

The Ralliart model is the top of the Galant line at over $27,000 and sports a 258 hp V6, and a lot less fuel performance than the other trims. The ES and Sport Edition with a more fuel efficient Inline 4-cylinder 160 hp engine knock down between 20 and 30 mpg. The Sport V6 and Ralliart both have the 3.8 liter V6 engine that gets 230 and 258 hp respectively.

Handling & Performance:

I tested the Ralliart model so the 258 hp is plenty powerful enough. I don’t want to be able to burn the tires off the rims but I do expect good performance over the mountains and be able to accelerate quickly enough to be safe on Los Angeles highways. It’s a jungle out there and people can be brutal so you want to be able to get out of your own way in those situations. This Galant won’t let you down.

Styling:

Cookie cutter styling that is uninteresting and common in today’s world. But the lines are clean and this is a decently comfortable commuter and family car. Not all cars can be different from the pack. Cars like the PT Cruiser, Plymouth Prowler, Corvette Z06, Chrysler 300 and of course the Dodge Challenger are several of the cars that stand out and come to mind.

Fit and Finish:

Good

Cost:

Competitive in class. The other two trims (ES and Sport Edition) are just over $20,000.

Features and Conveniences:

Many new cars have Bluetooth connectivity for your cell phone. But if you don’t have that built in you can buy a battery operated portable version under $100. I’m sure prices will come down further as they become more popular with the demand of law. And you can also have them tied into your radio system for a few more bucks. The technology is common on high end pricey brands, so the portable versions will take off with the mandatory hands free cell usage in cars beginning July 1, 2008.

If you are contemplating a change in your family’s cars the Galant can fill the need for economy. Then you can pamper your passion for your Hummer (soon to be history) or other SUV (now a very cheap purchase option). You can have the gas guzzler and simply drive it less frequently.

In fact my suggestion is that you look more closely at adding a third family car to include a Smart Car for about $11,000 that gets about 50 mpg of regular gas. Those are all the rage in Europe and experiencing a supply backlog for orders in the US. Remember if you want to cut the cost of fuel, doubling miles per gallon is like paying $2.00 a gallon of gas in your present gas burner getting 25 or even fewer miles per gallon.

2008 Volkswagen Jetta SE (705)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2008 Volkswagen Jetta SE 2.5 which is a substantial little compact that borders on being a luxury car relative to the competition. The Audi and Acura, although listed as competition, are over priced and cost to benefit suffers. However some people are more concerned with looking rich than concerned about cost per mile they pay to chug around in traffic with absolutely no opportunity to show off their high performance automobile.

Jetta gives you a better feeling for driving a more fuel efficient, lower cost buy in commuter. Fact is the last time I tested an Audi on the highway it turned out to be an expensive experience when pushing the limits resulted in a speeding ticket. I had the same problem in Austria testing a Mercedes Benz on the wide open road where motorcycle cops are just as devious as they are here in America. But there you pay on the spot. I have always wondered if the fine ever made it from his pocket to his employer. More importantly, was he really a police officer? Why not just forget the ticket and call it a tip.

I should know better than to drive that way on a public highway anyway. Since I test drive most all cars on the race track I shouldn’t have to do any of that foolish stuff on the highway. Shame on me. Quite frankly I’m more ticked off that I got caught. Let’s be honest here.

Observation:

Remember discussing fuel economy and world price of gas? Well consider that in Europe where fuel per gallon is about $8.00 Europeans are more conscious of driving clean diesel fuel efficient cars that get at least twice the fuel economy as do American cars. Thus they pay the same per mile as do American drivers. My question to you who are in the know about the auto and oil companies is – why haven’t we adopted that driving philosophy in America? Write me and provide credentials and I will publish your answer.

Handling & Performance:

The average fuel economy for the compact class in the US is 29 mpg and this US version of the Jetta is below average at 24 mpg.

Styling:

This Jetta reminds me of the ever popular BMW and Acura which I always enjoy driving. But I have found many people go for “ugly”, by most standards, such as the Scion from Toyota or the Element from Honda (I’ve come to like the Element). I think the popularity of such cars is because we like to be different from the crowd. So in the scheme of things this Jetta is pretty conventional in design even if many simply say it is too much the same as the majority of cars on the road and thus boring and uninteresting. I call those “Cookie Cutter” cars, but Jetta is a rather sporty commuter and well done in my opinion.

Fit and Finish:

Jetta is thoughtfully put together and overall quite nice. I favor the bulky and solid built feeling you get from cars like this Jetta and tend to shy away from the dainty cars like Jaguar for example, which explains why Jag is a “Chick” car.

Cost:

Pricing is slightly over the average of the competition.

Features and Conveniences:

Wow … for the MSRP pricing this puppy is pretty well endowed. But I have to tell you standard or optional I find some things are not only unnecessary luxuries they can be down right nuisances and worse. The anti theft locks on the wheels sound good but that’s what we have insurance for. Just get a flat, when you’re in a hurry, and can’t find that special key to unlock the lugs… know what I mean?

If you want the sportier, well equipped, well assembled, this is a good choice and less money than the higher priced near luxury competition.

“An Automotive Love Affair”

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2008 Saturn Astra 3-Door XR compact crossover
built in Belgium based on Opel’s Astra. So this is the US version of that
European car which is built well for Euro budget conscious consumers.

I found its interior equipment and features control layout to be foreign as
well and not to my liking. I won’t bore you with the details because after a
week I could get by but they just weren’t as intuitive and friendly as they
could be for US consumers generally. The guy in charge of the development
team for the US version, Don Straitiff is said to have done little to make
it more acceptable to American consumers. I’m sure it was more budget based
than thinking it was all that different from other cars sold in America.

Observation:

I was watching the news the other day and they were talking with SUV owners
at the gas pump and one young man said of the gas prices, “I didn’t see it
coming”. The DMV should take that guys license away because he has to be a
bit blind. But I would say to him, now that you are strapped with $4 gas on
the way to world market prices of up to $8 a gallon don’t panic. Don’t dump
the SUV because for the loss you’d take on selling it right now you can buy
a Smart car from Mercedes Benz that is the rage of Europe for $11,000 that
gets about 50 mpg. Drive it commuting and when you have to pull the boat or
motorcycle trailer take the truck/SUV.

Handling & Performance:

The automatic transmission has a unique Neutral Idle feature that shifts
into neutral whenever the car is stopped and idling, thereby eliminating
torque-converter drag.

It has nice handling characteristics from the front engine front wheel drive
and braking is excellent because of larger disc brakes. The European Opel
version has smaller discs that tend to squeak. It seems American consumers
are more picky about squeaky brakes.

Styling:

There is something of a European flair in the look to offset the lousy
interior controls.

Fit and Finish:

Very good as you’d expect from most European products.

Cost:

Not bad and the good news is there is a crowd of competition in this
commuter class.

Features and Conveniences:

Large cargo area for this compact and usability is enhanced with easy fold
down seats.

Because you’re in the market for a car you need to look at the hottest class
and any of these will be a better investment when it comes time for resale.
The Smart Car will do better on fuel consumption but it is only a two seater
and really doesn’t belong in the mix. But if 2 seats is ok it is the best on
gas of all listed.

2008 Honda Accord EXL (703)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2008 Honda Accord 2 Door EXL V6 NV (Navigation). It is assembled in Marysville, Ohio, USA using parts from the US and Canada 60%, and Japan 25%. It’s in the Compact class and Honda’s lineup includes – Accord, Accord Hybrid, Civic, Civic Hybrid, CR-V, Element, Fit, Odyssey, Pilot, Ridgeline and S2000. I’ve tested them all but I don’t have to tell you this is the best looking Accord ever. Well, it is in my opinion.

It was my pleasure to review the car in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Hopping on and off the ferries to the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington State we had the opportunity to cozy up to this lovely automobile. It took us effortlessly, in part because of a great navigation system, to romantic historic places like Port Angeles and Port Townsend, Victoria BC and Orcus Island where the film Free Willie was made. Friend Glenn, the FX guy, was the rescue diver on the filming. Lucky guy because that is an enchanting island. From a mountain top on Orcus you get a 360 degree panoramic view and can see many of the Canadian San Juan’s and Vancouver as well. I highly recommend the journey in any make auto, but this Accord helped to make our trip special. The rain forest was very cool too where we stopped on our drive down the coast to Astoria and the Columbia River.

If you read my column from time to time you’ll know that the most useful feature in today’s cars is the Navigation system. I wouldn’t buy a car without one. However, I will remind you that Garmin and other portables like Tom-Tom can save you money and do essentially the same thing. Yesterday I added Navigation to my Blackberry now with a Traffic Alert feature. Now I can keep from getting lost even when I’m walking. At my age I can’t waste time and it even helps me find a different route if the one I’m on is not doing well.

I suspect if you’ve read this far you know I’m impressed with this Honda Accord. I did test the Hybrid version as well as the Civic / Hybrid and these are wonderful cars. I could own this car but I can’t own all the cars I’ve liked over the past 16 years of testing. But the Honda has never disappointed me.
