2011 Mercedes-Benz E550 Coupe (874)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2011 Mercedes-Benz E550 Coupe. Beautiful only begins to express my feeling about this car. This one is easy to fall in love with. I’ve owned a couple of top of the line Mercedes cars over the years and so when I drove this E550-C it brought back fond memories. They are truly special automobiles. I tested an E320 Wagon throughout Germany and northern Italy, Austria and Switzerland. They are always a joy to drive.

This very sporty 2 plus two smaller folks in the back coupe is to me perfect for a young exec on the prowl. It is very exciting and faster than snot on a hot day. And yes the test car was red. Beautiful and a target for added taxes on the rich.

E Class originated from Einspritzmotor or fuel injected engine, if you’re interested.

General Info:

Parts are from Germany and it is assembled in Germany. Class is Sub Compact. Cars from Mercedes – C-Class, CL, CLS, E-Class, E-Wagon, G-Class, GL, GLK, M-Class, M-Hybrid, R-Class, S-Class, S-Hybrid, SL-Class, SLK, SLS & Sprinter.

Opinion:

This is a follow up to the State’s rebuttal of my comments about Government addiction to oil.

I am amazed at how out of touch they are with the general public. They are off in their own little world of ‘make believe’. Make believe everything is ok and make believe they are needed. Clearly they are not. The song “I get along without you very well” pops into my mind and I think of simpler days when people made things happen and the Government pretty much stayed the hell out of the way. The pioneer spirit was alive and well before the Nanny State morphed into this monster of stupid government bureaucrats who think they really matter. They do however, in that they contribute nothing and the MATTERS. It matters to our society because government is a huge burden we can ill afford. It’s a social machine gone amuck.

So to Ms. Kathleen M’s query that if $.07 per gallon goes to oil company profit and $.55 goes to Government taxes then where does the rest of the price of a gallon of gas go?

Well, to begin with I think the profit is approximately 7% to the Oil Companies, and the tax in California is $.66 / gallon not $.55. Be that as it may Ms. M., the difference is called “Cost of Sales”. The price of a barrel of oil, refinery costs, advertising, rent, and most importantly Salaries and Wages among other expenses like ‘taxes! All of that cost is what fuels our economy, and by the way, the taxes, included in those expenses, is what makes government jobs possible to begin with.

Recommended reading:

Michelle Malkin’s “Culture of Corruption”, and another book I found illuminating is Catherine Drinker Bowen’s “Miracle at Philadelphia”, the story of the Constitutional Convention, May to September 1787. Wouldn’t it be great if our schools would resume teaching Economics in school, and while they’re at it how about Reading, Writing and Arithmetic.

Handling & Performance:

This E550 will get your heart pumping. 0-60 mph in a heart trobbing 5.0 seconds – Wow! Top speed 130 mph (Electronically limited). I wonder if that is the case on the Autobahn’s of Germany. I understand the speed laws are changing there anyway, which is sad, because that was great fun to experience those speeds on a highway.

Styling:

Stunning.

Fit and Finish:

Impressive!

Cost:

$55K base and $65 with the premium package.

Conveniences and comfort:

Sumptuous.

Consumer Recommendation:

If you can afford the price of admission, this is an E-Ride.

2012 Fiat 500 Sport Hatchback (873)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2012 Fiat 500 Sport Hatchback. The first things that come to mind are the VW Bug that I owned in college. They were not pretty but they did the job and did it efficiently. Second was my owning a Fiat 124 Spider that was great fun and finally my experience with the older Fiats in Eastern Europe, in particular in Poland. Only 5 years out of Communism at that time, gas prices in Poland, and as was the case in most of Europe, right at $8.00 a gallon. The experiences gave me a healthy respect for Fiat cars.

Some will say I have joked about the acronym F-I-A-T that stands for fix it again Tony, but that is just poking fun. But in my automotive repair facility Fiat repairs would never have sustained us. For 12 years, we at G&I Automotive (for German & Italian), learned the real money to be made was from repairs of BMW, Audi, Mercedes Benz, Jaguar and Ferrari.

Friend Merkel owns several Fiats as a collector and is an automotive engineer as you may recall from his guest columns here. He loves Fiat for a lot of reasons including the engineering. He is more than happy to share his views with anyone who will listen. He’s the most knowledgeable person I know in the world about anything automotive and I’m always happy when he agrees to write a guest column for me.

A couple of cars that are not on the competition list for this 500 include the Smart from Mercedes and the MINI from BMW came to mind as well.

General Info:

11% of Parts are from the US and Canadian; 59% come from Mexico; The Engine and Transmission come from Italy. It is assembled in Toluca, Mexico. Class is Sub Compact. Cars from Fiat – Freemont, New Doblo, Qubo, Bravo, Linea, New Croma, 500C, Idea, Sedici, Palio, 500, Multipla, Palio Weekend, Doblo, Panda, Punto, Albea, 600, Siena, Stilo, Ulysse, .

Opinion:

Look for more on the Governments retort to my charge that it is Government who is addicted to OIL.

Handling & Performance:

Nimble and faster than I would have thought. This puppy can take care of itself on the highway even though it is nothing like another product from Fiat, Ferrari. Yes, Fiat owns Ferrari which is the spoiled brat of the family, but anything that beautiful generally gets all the attention.

Fiat 500 is powered by a 101-horsepower 1.4-liter engine with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic transmission. The 500 Sport adds sport-tuned suspension, 16-inch alloy wheels, the 6-speed automatic and chrome accents.

Styling:

I know many will take issue with the outward appearance but consider the Nazi product the world embraced and especially in the US – it was Hitler’s pride and joy the Volkswagen.

Fiat didn’t pick up any of the Ferrari genes, but take a look at Scion – only a mother could love that child.

Fiat is offered in Pop, Sport and Lounge trim levels. Standard equipment on the 500 includes seven airbags, air conditioning, AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system, power windows & door locks, power heated mirrors and an ElectronicVehicleInformationCenter. The 500 Sport adds distinctive fascias, larger honeycomb grilles and aerodynamic updates.

Fit and Finish:

Excellent in class.

Cost:

More pricey than I thought at $17,000.

Conveniences and comfort:

Another thing you’ll notice with this Fiat 500 is how well appointed it is and features you’d expect of larger more expensive cars. Take a look at the very impressive listing of standard features.

Consumer Recommendation:

I believe Fiat 500 will be a real winner in a world of rising fuel prices. It is a welcomed addition to the US auto scene. For the rest of the world you already know the legend of Fiat in the Automotive world. Write me and I’ll give you Merkel’s Cell phone to learn more than you wanted to know about Fiat.

Recognized Competition:

Fiat 500 $17,000, Chevrolet Aveo $12,000, Ford Fiesta $13,000, Honda Fit $15,000, Hyundai Accent $12,000, Kia Rio $16,000, Mazda 2 $14,000, Nissan Versa $14,000, Toyota Yaris $13,000.

Good News:

Efficient, great fuel numbers, roomy small car.

Bad News:

A bit more pricey than competition named here.

Standard Equipment:

1.4 liter 101 hp 4-cylinder engine, 5-speed manual transmission, 4-wheel ABS disc brakes, electronic stability control, cruise control, hill start assist, sport suspension, front, side and side curtain front & rear airbags and knee air bags, power windows & locks, remote keyless entry, tire pressure monitor, sentry key immobilizer, rear window washer/wiper and defogger, air conditioning, driver seat memory, BOSE premium audio with CD / MP3 players, Blue&Me hands free and USB port, leather wrapped wheel with audio controls, tilt steering column, vehicle information, 50/50 split fold down rear seat, LATCH system, 16” aluminum wheels, Halogen lights and fog lights.

2011 Audi TT TFSI Quattro S-Tronic Coupe (870)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2011 Audi TT 2.0 TFSI Quattro S-Tronic Coupe. The TT is Audi’s sporty two-door, four-passenger Coupe and Roadster, named for the Tourist Trophy, a European motorsports event that was first held in 1905. Both the TT Coupe and the TT Roadster were redesigned for the first time for 2008 and incorporate the third-generation Audi Space Frame (ASF) technology that combines aluminum and steel in the chassis to reduce weight and improve weight distribution. The TT Coupe concept was unveiled in 1995 and arrived in production form for 2000 with very few visual changes from the concept. The Roadster was added for 2001.

The 2011 Audi TT receives new bumpers, grille, fog light grille and chrome fog lights. Inside additional aluminum and high-gloss black trim is added for the steering wheel, center console and door panels.

I reviewed the TTS in 2010 and for 2011 it receives fog light grilles with horizontal braces and 19-inch tri-spoke 5-segment wheels.

General Information:

Parts used in this car come from the US and Canada are 1%, Germany 75%; Engine – Hungary; Transmission – Germany. It is assembled in Gyor, Hungary. Classification is  Sub-compact

Cars: – A3, A4, A4 Avant, A5, A6, A6 Avant, A7, A8, Q5, Q7, R8, S4, S5, S6 & TT.

Handling & Performance:

Awesome performance as usual, and that is where the trouble begins if you don’t exercise self control. It is easy with a turbo to take the exhilaration of rapid acceleration to push the limits – speed limits. And in today’s world that is getting pretty expensive for the “E” ride experience. If you were born after Disneyland changed ticketing for the rides at its park you likely don’t know what the term “E” ride meant. Ask your mom or dad.

Styling:

Oolong Gray metallic paint. If you go to Chinese restaraunts you probably have had Oolong Tea? Good stuff but very expensive tea. This design speaks expensive too. But it is an eye catcher for sure. People always comment it is a “nice car” which translates to mean “well designed” for today’s tastes. I really like the Audi lighting. I’ll bet the guy that designed those got a raise.

Fit and Finish:

Very very good.

Cost:

Pricey, but it is in the company of very expensive cars so in that sense it is a bargain. It’s all relative I guess, and if it performs, looks and feels as good or close enough then the price is irrelevant. And if you decide on this class car you can probably afford it.

Conveniences and comfort:

All the best. The list below says it all.

Consumer Recommendation:

One must consider when buying this car, if the size is right, that the cost of operation in class is usually pricey. Friend Mark when he takes his Porsche to the Porsche – Audi dealer in town it is never cheap. If you can’t pay the price cross this one off the list. Mark can, and when we got back to LAX from a trip to Oregon and sat in the car he was noticeably impressed. He really liked this TT and he can literally buy ‘any’ car made. Glad you liked it Mark, But I have to give it back in a week. Life is simply not fair.

Recognized Competition:

Audi TT $38,000, BMW Z4 $47,000, Ford Mustang $33,000, Hyundai Genesis Coupe $27,000, Infiniti G Sedan $35,000, Lotus Elise $52,000, Lotus Exige $66,000, Mazda MX-5 Miata $23,000, Mazda RX8 $27,000, Mercedes Benz SLK $55,000, Mitsubishi Eclipse $25,000, Nissan Z $31,000, Porsche Boxster $48,000, Porsche Cayman $52,000, Saab 9-3 $29,000.

Good News:

Good fuel economy, lots of great features standard, fabulously fun to drive.

Bad News:

Pricey to own.

Standard Equipment:

2.0 liter 211 hp turbo charged 4-cylinder engine, S-Tronic 6-speed automatic dual clutch transmission, Quattro all wheel drive system, 18” alloy wheels, Front McPherson strut and four link rear suspension, servotronic electromechanical steering, electronic stability control, 4-wheel abs disc brakes, anti-slip regulation, automatic rear spoiler, Xenon headlights, tire pressure monitoring system, multi-function leather wrapped sport steering wheel, climate control, 140 watt sound system with in dash CD with SIRIUS satellite and 9-speakers, cruise control, 2+2 seater with 50/50 split folding rear seat, front, side and knee airbags, anti-theft alarm system, anchors and tethers for children (LATCH), 10-way power seats, rain sensing wipers.

2011 Kia Forte SX (867)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2011 Korean made Kia Forte SX. Kia says they had the best quarter sales on record. Not surprising to me as this company just gets better every year. If you’re interested in what is new for 2012 you can go to kiamedia.com.

Hard to believe another car year is almost over as we begin to talk about 2012.

The promotion people at Kia remind us that the entire Kia lineup continues to be backed by its 10 year, 100,000 mile warranty. In today’s lousy economy (for way too many) this is good news and welcomed security for a product we just can’t seem to do without … of course unless you live in New York City. I love the subway system there.

Opinion:

Years ago, in the late 1940s, Los Angeles California was manipulated by government and the auto related businesses. They stripped out the public transportation system and tore up all the tracks for the ‘Red Car’ and other rail services in the area. Why? Because the tire manufactures, auto companies, gas & oil business all wanted to push their products and somehow convinced government the rail system was not the best way to move people around. Ironic, today we have begun replacing the rail system… albeit too late for what it could have been. What a shame. And shame on those government officials who allowed it. That’s how the free market system is tampered with to the detriment of the people. It’s not nice to fool with mother nature or the ‘free market capitalist system’. And yes, you guessed it… those officials were paid off to do the ‘wrong thing’. Shame on them.

Handling & Performance:

I prefer the handling of rear wheel drive cars like this Forte. And it doesn’t get much better in the performance area to make it a great commuter or simply a great car for the young family on a budget. With gas hovering around $4 a gallon this 32 highway mpg car is looking pretty good to me.

Paddle shifters come standard and they could save the pot metal or plastic as far as I’m concerned. You may like that feature but especially on this economy car it seems inconsistent.

Styling:

Basic, basic, basic which is a good thing in my opinion… and I didn’t stutter. It is basic as are all the competition listed here. Anything car makers add is just fluff and you must know you pay dearly for fluff and fancy badges to boost your ego. Sad commentary on us as a culture bent on displaying outwardly who has the most money or rather who appears to have the most money and that translates into who is more important or somehow better.

Fit and Finish:

Basically good.

Cost:

Outstanding value. If you want a BMW or other fu-fu badge, that’s a different story. But if you are a self assured person that feels a car is not what makes the person, you will save a really lot of money. I suggest you use the money you save to spend more time with the family. Take them to Europe. Trust me, you really can save that kind of money driving a car like this.

Conveniences and comfort:

Unbelievably good stuff is available for a little more money. I particularly like the push button start keyless device so you can keep it in your pocket or purse. I love it. I like Nav but leave it out and buy a portable brand for about $100. The options above the standard MSRP of $19,000 include leather package for $1,000 a power sunroof for $750 and a Nav system, push button start smart key and climate control for $1,800. The only item I would want to have is the push button start out of all these options.

Consumer Recommendation:

Your budget is vital in a car buying decision. It’s not chump change, but if you’re an average Joe who needs to commute what better way than in a “commuter” car that delivers great mileage out of a conventional power plant. Hybrids are a waste of money when you can get about the same mpg from a car like this Forte or any of the competitors listed here.

Recognized Competition:

Kia Forte $19,000, Chevrolet Cobalt $16,000, Chevrolet Cruze $17,000, Dodge Caliber $,000, Ford Focus $16,000, Honda Civic $16,000, Honda Civic Hybrid $24,000, Hyundai Accent $12,000, Hyundai Elantra $15,000, Mazda3 $16,000, Mitsubishi Lancer $17,000, Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback $17,000, Nissan Sentra $16,000, Subaru Impreza $17,000, Suzuki SX4 Sport $15,000, Toyota Corolla $16,000, Volkswagen Golf 17,000.

Good News:

Really economical transportation from purchase price to operating cost.

Bad News:

It won’t stroke your ego.

Standard Equipment:

2.4 liter 4-cylinder 156 horsepower engine, 6-speed auto trans rear wheel drive, paddle shifters 17” alloy wheels, front, side and side curtain airbags, LATCH child seat system, 4-wheel anti lock disc brakes with power assist, traction and stability controls, tire pressure monitor, air conditioning, audio with CD/MP3  and 6 speakers, SIRIUS satellite radio, USB & Auxiliary input, Bluetooth, leather wrapped steering wheel & shirt knob, tilt and telescopic steering column, manual adjustable seats, 60/40 split folding rear seats, power windows & locks &  outside mirrors, keyless entry, cruise control, .

2011 Hyundai Sonata SE 2.0T (864)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2011 Hyundai Sonata SE 2.0T 4-door sedan. The fuel economy (mpg) numbers are good and without the Turbocharger even better by 2 mpg more on the highway. Personally I prefer having the option to use the rapid acceleration provided by the Turbo when I need it. I’d miss the 2 mpg and especially so when it goes to $5 or $6 per gallon. Thanks Obama, you are a slow learner and when we get rid of you we will likely resume drilling our own oil instead of sending our money over to other countries that do NOT deserve our help. If I thought you could change arrogance like you can change ignorance through teaching I wouldn’t be so concerned about the future. But our current president is simply marching to a different drummer.

General Info:

39% of Parts are from the US and Canadian including the engine; 60% come from Korea including the Transmission. It is assembled in Montgomery, Alabama, USA. Class is Midsize. Cars from Hyundai – Accent, Azera, Elantra, Elantra Touring, Entourage, Equus, Genesis, Genesis Coupe, Santa Fe, Sonata, Sonata Hybrid, Tucson & Veracruz.

Opinion:

Do you ever wonder why private enterprise works so well and government is so inefficient at virtually everything it does, except killing guys like Osama bin Laden clandestinely with highly efficient military men and women?

I traveled all over eastern Europe shortly after the fall of Communism and I observed older folks in the family throughout Poland for example who hated the fall while their kids were loving it as they embraced capitalism and have now turned Poland, the Czech Republic into thriving economies in less than two short decades. The actual turnaround was evident just 5 years after that collapse of a stupid socialistic 40 year experiment was proven terribly wrong.

I am reminded of the drastic differences between Marxist Socialism and having to actually work for what you want or need to accomplish in your life. You know, “From each according to his abilities and to each according to his needs”. Karl Marx was a bloody idiot as are all those today that haven’t lived it or at least studied history enough so they don’t STILL think it is a good idea. Those who voted for Obama’s stated hope and change – translated to mean – let’s try Socialism again because we’re smarter and can make it work. Then we can have equality so we’re all equally poor. God Bless the American dream and the great American experience that provided opportunity to those willing to work hard and provide for themselves.

God bless dad who emigrated from Sicily and passed on a work ethic common in those days.  Otherwise I wouldn’t be enjoying the benefits of freedom, nor would I be responsible to pay it forward for my kids. Dad let me work for him to pay back the $50 it cost to buy my first car – a 1934 Chevrolet Coupe, with a rumble seat in the back. I have lots to be thankful for.

Handling & Performance:

Outstanding with turbo power that is the future for gas or diesel powered engines. And the engine employs variable valve timing that is usually found only on more expensive cars.

Styling:

Great job on giving the Sonata the look of ‘today’ and not unlike even more expensive top luxury brands. I suspect that is the major reason why there is such a ‘buzz’ in the air from reviewers and car buyers how much they like this Sonata. The cars rep is growing in part because it is a South Korean product that is also getting good press.

Fit and Finish:

Very good, especially for the money, this is a well put together car.

Cost:

You’ll hear a lot about the real value of the Korean made cars and it is all true. Much like the early days of Japanese products the price was destined to go up quickly. If you’re in the market this is the perfect time to take advantage of the new kid on the block.

Conveniences and comfort:

Hyundai delivers a lot for the money which is the consensus of review columnists I talk with. I can’t say enough about the keyless start system. You literally do not have to take the key fob out of your pocket or purse.

Consumer Recommendation:

There are so many nice cars in this class to choose from and that gives you even more bargaining power considering a lousy economy if, of course, you are among the lucky ones with a job.

Recognized Competition:

Hyundai Sonata SE $23,000, Acura TSX $30,000, Buick LaCrosse $27,000, Buick Regal $26,000, Chevrolet Malibu $22,000, Chrysler 200 $19,000, Dodge Avenger $19,000, Dodge Charger $25,000, Ford Fusion $20,000, Ford Taurus $25,000, Honda Accord $21,000, Kia Optima $20,000, Mazda 6 $20,000, Mitsubishi Galant $22,000, Nissan Altima $20,000, Nissan Maxima $31,000, Subaru Legacy $20,000, Suzuki Kizashi $19,000, Toyota Camry $20,000, Volkswagen Jetta $15,000.

Good News:

Made in the USA, ‘still’ priced well, fast, good fuel numbers.

Bad News:

Can’t recall anything.

Standard Equipment:

2.0 liter 274 horsepower inline 4-cylinder turbo gasoline engine, continuous variable valve timing, 6-speed auto transmission with Shifttronic pedal shifter, sport tuned suspension, 4-wheel anti lock disc brakes with force distribution brake assist, 18” wheels, electronic stability control, traction control, tire pressure monitoring system, keyless push button start system, power windows, locks & mirrors, power driver seat with lumbar support, 60/40 split folding rear seat, tilt and telescoping leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, climate control, audio with XM, CD/MP3, trip computer, iPod / USB / Aux ports, steering wheel cruise, audio and phone controls, fog lights and Bluetooth phone system.

2011 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4WD Crew Cab 2HY Hybrid (877)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4WD Crew Cab 2HY Hybrid. I own a 1985 Silverado and got to wondering how this new Silverado will look in the year 2037. Will it hold up as well, better or the same as my 1985?

As to this new 2011 Silverado, the first thing you notice after you close the door is how quiet it is and the seats are like easy chairs at home. Then as I drive down the highway, I notice how solid it feels. It is light years better than the 1985 I have. I also think of my 1955 Ford Pickup and back then we were happy to sit on a milk crate as seating, so it was a luxury having a bench seat with coil springs. Literally you look under the seat which is hollow and you could see the coil springs holding up the seat covering and providing some seat cushion. That was real luxury. Those were also the days when Crank up windows were the norm and there was also a hole in the grill where you inserted the ‘Hand Crank’ to start the engine when the starter failed. Even further back to the Pre-electric Starter days, which WAS before my time, was when dad had to start his cars with a hand crank. Ringing any bells?

I’m sure any of you who remember “Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride” and other “E” Ticket rides at Disneyland will relate to my comment above.

General Info:

Parts – US/Canadian 61%; Mexico 34%.

Engine – Engine – Mexico, Transmission – US.

Assembly – Silao, GJ, Mexico

Class  – Standard Pick up Trucks

Cars – Avalanche, Aveo, Aveo 5, Camaro, Cobalt, Colorado, Corvette, Cruze, Equinox, Express, Express Cargo Van, HHR, Impala, Malibu, Malibu Hybrid, Silverado 1500, 2500HD, 3500 HD, Hybrid, Suburban, Tahoe, Tahoe Hybrid, TrailBlazer, Traverse & Volt.

Opinion:

OK, so what’s your take on the diamond lane ‘off hours’ times? You know, that’s when it is posted that it is a diamond lane between the hours of 5AM to 9AM. In other words it functions as a HOV lane during heavy traffic hours. Does that mean outside of heavy traffic hours the double yellow lines can be ignored? If it is not a diamond lane then entry and exit should be allowed with a simple turn signal anywhere along the road. That is what is happening currently by many but that is because they obviously possess ‘common sense’.

What is your opinion?

What is the CHP opinion?

What is the Law?

What should the Law Be?

In Northern California as an example there ARE no double lines of any color separating diamond lane from others. Off heavy commuting hours you can use (enter and exit at will) any time any where. Now that is smart and something we apparently can’t expect from CALTRANS. I call that brain dead.

  • ·       Another thing that chaps my hide is the messages on signs on the highway. Not that they are there, but rather how some moron says, such as, “Slow down or move over for workers, IT’S THE LAW?” Well screw those arrogant bastards. Who the hell do they think they are? Who hired these idiots? Where did they learn to communicate?  . . . Oh excuse me. Right – Public Schools! That’s where students are dumbed down and learn very little. Civil people would write it something like “Please watch for your road workers and slow down in construction zones. Safety First. Thanks”.

Handling & Performance:

Fast was a real surprise, especially since it is a Hybrid. Kinda cool that you can creep along in slow traffic without the engine even engaging. That is a great capability for driving in LA traffic where freeways resemble parking lots more than highways.

Styling:

It’s a truck. No doubt about it. Hard to conceal that fact.

Fit and Finish:

Excellent.

Cost:

More pricey than I expected, but the price includes features that are all standard and including in the pricing.

Conveniences and comfort:

You get a lot and it’s all standard but it will cost you. They just save you the trouble of choosing options packages. Personally I prefer having the choice, plus it gives you the opportunity to bargain with the salespeople.

Consumer Recommendation:

Good News:

Super comfort, fast, fair fuel economy for a work truck and great features.

Bad News:

A little pricey.

2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe (863)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 R-Spec M/T. This car is in fantastic company to compete with, and they are mostly more expensive. The Coupe was a 2010 finalist for Motor Trends ‘car of the year’ and it is the most sporty of Hyundai’s offerings to date. Although it is pitted against muscle cars like the Camaro, Mustang and Challenger I see it more comparable to Infiniti G Coupe, Mitsubishi Eclipse and Mazda RX-8.
I did experience an electrical anomaly that was unsettling. While driving it dropped to a maximum of 2,000 rpm and wouldn’t run over 20 mph. Odd but after shutting down and restarting it was back to normal. It didn’t repeat the problem and appeared to be an electrical glitch that I reported to the company. I experienced the same problem with a BMW with the same result. It either has something to do with the ‘drive by wire’ accelerator or in the computer somewhere. I will let you know as soon as I get an answer. I never did get a reply from BMW.
General Info: 3% of Parts are from the US and Canadian; 86% come from Korea including the Engine & Transmission. It is assembled in Ulsan, Korea. Class is Sub-Compact. Cars from Hyundai – Accent, Azera, Elantra, Elantra Touring, Entourage, Equus, Genesis, Genesis Coupe, Santa Fe, Sonata, Sonata Hybrid, Tucson & Veracruz.

Opinion:

Wow! The Gestapo is at it again. In the Midwest they are downloading your cell phone data onto police computers without probable cause. This isn’t a suggestion, they are actually doing it. The direction is scary that law enforcement would go along with obvious intrusion on our right to privacy. It is the 4th amendment that guards against unreasonable searches and seizures and the government is testing us to see what they can get away with.
Benjamin Franklin is quoted as saying, “those who would give up liberty for security deserve neither”. How insightful.
Speak out against such abuse of power that corrupts before it is ‘absolute power’ that corrupts absolutely. Of course you can’t be stopped if you are an illegal alien without probable cause but you can be stopped while driving and demand you turn over your personal information that is kept on your cell phone. That data includes all your personal mail, texting messages and GPS co-ordinates for the past year so your every move is recorded. Wow!

Handling & Performance:

The Coupe is fast and a fun driving experience which comes standard.

Styling:

The Coupe is a sleek and a pretty looking sport car. The RED paint on the one I tested makes it a magnet to attract the ticket writers.

Fit and Finish:

Good, but I did report to the company there was an annoying squeak I couldn’t find, which was reminiscent of the “Good old days” when cars always creaked and groaned as normal and expected. I’m sure it is a glitch that is unusual in today’s world of cars because engineering is  generally bullet proof these days. The Coupe was introduced in 2010 so only a couple of years old and you can be sure they will search out the reason and fix it by the time you buy one.

Cost:

Very cost competitive in class. It will take off if the obvious popularity from my week of driving it is any indication. Then the price will go up as the performance is experienced for those who opt for a sport car that is so wisely priced.

Conveniences and comfort:

The rear seat is only good for very little people that is consistent with all sub compact sport car coupes. For the driver and passenger in front it is quite comfortable. The model I tested did not have cruise control which really was a surprise and I would not buy a car without it because I do a lot of road travel where I find it a necessity.

Consumer Recommendation:

If you are in the market for a sporty car this is a must test drive.
Recognized Competition:Hyundai Genesis Coupe $27,000, Audi A4 $32,000, Audi S5 $54,000, Audi TT $38,000, BMW 1 Series $36,000, BMW 3 Series $35,000, BMW 5 Series $45,000, BMW Z4 $47,000, Cadillac CTS $35,000, Chevrolet Camaro $24,000, Dodge Challenger $25,000, Ford Mustang $26,000, Infiniti G Convertible $46,000, Infiniti G Coupe $37,000, Jaguar XF Series $52,000, Lincoln MKS $41,000, Mazda RX8 $27,000, Mercedes-Benz E Class $49,000, Mitsubishi Eclipse $29,000, Nissan Z $31,000, Scion tC $19,000.

Good News:

Fast, fun driving experience, fair fuel economy, and very nice looking.

Bad News:

A couple of glitches that were unsettling.

Standard Equipment:

3.8 liter 306 horsepower V6 engine, 6-speed manual transmission, rear wheel drive, 5-link independent rear suspension, Track suspension strut brace, Brembo braking system, Anti Lock with brake force distribution brake assist, 19” wheels, torsion limited slip differential, electronic stability control, traction control, black leather with cloth insert seats, driver lumbar, special trim, air conditioning, keyless entry with alarm, leather wrapped steering wheel & shift knob, power windows, locks & mirrors, audio with XM, CD/MP3, trip computer, iPod / USB / Aux port, steering wheel audio controls, fog lights, Bluetooth phone system.

2011 Mazda CX9 Grand Touring AWD (862)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2011 Mazda CX9 Grand Touring AWD SUV. I must say it has been a delight driving this SUV. It is amazing how much car you can get for the money. Consider 1967 a nice Chevrolet Malibu was about $2,500 plus. Well in today’s dollars that pretty basic car would be over $40,000. And that Malibu got about 7-12 miles per gallon of gas. So relatively speaking a $30,000 purchase price and 16-22 mpg for this Mazda SUV is a great improvement. And with seating for 7 it is very versatile for a larger family.

As you surely know by now, many Japanese cars are assembled in the US. Not so with this Mazda, and for those of you who have visited Hiroshima after 1945 it is a modern city where several cars are made today. I was there in 1960 and must admit one has to wonder if radioactivity is such a big deal. An Atom Bomb dropped there in 1945 hasn’t been a problem at least as far back as 1960. At least I’m not glowing.

General Info: 10% of Parts are from the US and Canadian; 85% come from Japan including the Engine & Transmission. It is assembled in Hiroshima, Japan. Class is SUV AWD. Cars from Mazda – CX-7, CX-9, Mazda2,3,5,6, MAZDASPEED3, MX-5 Miata, RX-8, Tribute, Tribute Hybrid & Truck.

Opinion:

Unless you are happy paying $5-6- or 7.00 / gal of gas, you’d better start yelling at congress to ‘drill-baby-drill’. The USA is #1 in world oil reserves, Russia is a distant second and the Middle East is 3rd. Our reserves are said to be 200 years worth of oil. I for one am tired of pouring our money into the coffers of middle east ‘sheiks’ and tribal elder idiots to bring them out of the stone age. It’s time for us to shore up our own country. How about you?

Consider further transportation in 200 years will be far different than gas burning engines. Six years ago I tested the Hi-Wire Hydrogen powered car and it was then estimated it would be about 5 years before it would be available commercially. We aren’t that far away from that reality and it is not so far-fetched we’ll power our cars one day on sea water unless we’re not already using ‘molecular transportation’ systems by then to ‘beam us up Scotty’.

Hey, some studies on technology are telling us in 50 years we’ll be able to download our brains onto computers. Come on, lets face it, we have nothing to fear but fear itself and some will try to scare you into believing the planet will ‘implode’ if we extract oil from the earth. I don’t think we’re that stupid.

The current federal government administration is continuing the policies of the past which serves only to push gas prices up. It is clear they want to FORCE you and me to buy greenerwhich means -30-35 mpg in today’s world. Say what bro? What about our free market capitalist system? You know, the one I learned about in college Econ 101.

Quit trying to dictate how we should live or spend my money. We rebelled against the tyranny of King George and now they’re trying to manipulate us again because they think they know better. I say, throw the bums out and Exile them all to an Island with Qaddafi and other pin head dictators and set ourselves free once again. The rest of the world is expressing the desire to have what America had more of just 50 years ago. Those countries are now being toppled like domino’s in their quest for freedom and liberty which is a natural desire of all people. Right here in the USA today’s leaders are as bad as other control freak dictators around the world and need to be replaced with common sense folks. Telling me what to do is simply un-American. The French would say, “Off with their Heads”.

Handling & Performance:

Wonderfully comfortable and capable. You can’t want for much more and it is AWD safe. Ok, so the fuel economy is not the best, especially with today’s prices between $4 and $5/ gallon, but if you have a need for seating for 7, this is likely the most economical transporation.

Styling:

Among the more stylish of SUVs. Nice job Mazda.

Fit and Finish:

Excellent.

Cost:

About average in the field.

Conveniences and comfort:

The features included standard for the pricing noted for this CX-9 is tops. What we pay for creature comforts continues to be less of the cost of the entire package as free market technology roars forward. In spite of 22 mpg max common for this class SUV it is still the best we have if you are like my son with 4 kids requiring seating for 7. Can you imagine going on vacation or just taking the kids to school WITHOUT a vehicle of this size? Of course not.

Consumer Recommendation:

Once again if you ever doubted this class SUV is in high demand just look at all the brands. And capitalist companies do what comes naturally – they give the consumer what they want and need.

Of the manufacturers listed here I’m impressed with the Korean and American for price and I have driven all of them. The Japanese – Mazda and Mitsubishi are top condenders and next on my list.

Recognized Competition:

Mazda CX-9 $35,000, Acura MDX $43,000, Audi Q5 $43,000, BMW X5 $52,000, Buick Enclave $44,000, Cadillac Esclade $66,000, Chevrolet Traverse $31,000, Dodge Durango $31,000, Dodge Journey $30,000, Ford Flex $34,000, GMC Acadia $36,000, Honda Pilot $40,000, Hyundai Veracruz $30,000, Infiniti QX56 $62,000, Jeep Grand Cherokee $39,000, Kia Borrego $40,000, Lexus RX350 $40,000, Lincoln MKX $41,000, Lincoln Navigator $60,000, Mitsubishi Enedavor $34,000, Nissan Murano $38,000, Subaru Tribeca $36,000, Toyota Highlander $35,000, Toyota Highlander Hybrid $43,000, Toyota Sequoia $60,000.

Good News:

Well priced, great safety and comfort features and powerful. Great ride that is also great looking.

Bad News:

Only fair fuel economy.

Standard Equipment:

3.7 liter 273 horsepower V6 engine, 6-speed automatic transmission, active torque split all wheel drive, 20” aluminum alloy wheels, roof spoiler, rain sensing wipers, heater power mirrors, 7-passenger seating, tilt & telescopic steering wheel with audio and cruise controls, speed sensing door locks, power windows with remote opening, leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, leather heated 8-way driver seat with memory, heated power front passenger seat, 4-wheel ABS vented power disc brakes with electronic brake force distribution, stability control, roll over protection and roll stability control, blind spot monitoring system, tire pressure monitor, auto headlights, fog lights, power lift gate, 60/40 split fold down 2nd & 50/50 3rd row seats, Bluetooth, audio with CD and 6-speakers, climate control, keyless entry with start system, trip computer, dynamic stability control, front and side airbags, anti theft engine immobilizer and alarm, LATCH child safety system.

2011 Subaru WRX Sedan (861)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX 4 Door Sedan which was a fun car to drive. It still remains, in my mind, a kids car which is likely a strength in demand. It is priced at about $25,000, however, and that may be a little rich for young budgets. Do young people buy their own cars these days? Nothing is more obnoxious to me to see a teen driving a new BMW… and probably will attend the University of Spoiled Children. The WRX is manufactured in the US at a plant in Lafayette, Indiana that employs about 3,500 auto workers. It is the only plant outside of Japan for Subaru, and produces the Impreza, Legacy and Tribeca. Currently because of the earthquake in Japan parts shortages have forced limited production at the plant. But the workers will not be laid off as the facility also builds the Camry for Toyota.  General Info: parts come from Japan. It is assembled Lafayette, Indiana. Class is compact AWD. Cars from Subaru – Forester, Impreza, Impreza WRX, Legacy, Outback & Tribeca. .

Opinion:

You will get a kick out of this… remember when I suggested recently that you should not use a cell phone while driving? Well, execution is not always easy, and although I have a portable hands free device I left the office while having a conversation on my cell, got in the car, started it and drove off. I didn’t get 5 blocks when a CHP motorcycle cop coming in the opposite direction on a city street spotted me and turned around to cite me. I handed him my License and registration etc and didn’t argue or plead for mercy but rather fessed up and said I know better. I cheerfully accepted the $159 first time citation and re-avowed to only use a Cell Phone while driving with my Bluetooth device. The officer pointed out April was Cell Phone awareness month so their QUOTA’s are higher than usual. Be more careful than me.My Bluetooth device is portable because I’m in and out of a different car every week, but you can get one built in and they link up to your cell as soon as you get in the car so you don’t have to remember or get distracted as I did. Those of you who have received a citation for cell phone use in the car while driving likely already know the second citation is about $400. You can bet your ass I won’t give them a second chance to increase the tax I pay. Handling & Performance:This WRX is turbocharged  for impressive acceleration and all wheel drive coupled with a wide track stance and low center of gravity make it a superb handling car. The deep exhaust sound adds to the draw to youthful drivers.  Styling:The design is youthful, racy looking replete with air scoops, rear spoiler and aluminum sport touches on pedals and foot rest. The seats are nicely highlighted with special sport trim & stitching. Generally, the curves and edges are just a little too busy for my taste. The wheels are sporty but for me it also detracts from the quiet look I prefer. But the kids are going to love owning one. The low to the ground stance will require the boys to pull up their pants from around their knees to get in (a belt might help). Don’t you just puke when you see how today’s youth clothe themselves? Hey, we weren’t much better in trying to make a statement that we too had worth – you know duck tails, t-shirts with cigarettes rolled up in the sleeve. Yea, we were cool too. Fit and Finish:Good.  Cost: A little pricey, but Subaru quality, AWD and turbo performance make it a good value. Conveniences and comfort:I appreciate innovative touches like the brake delay feature so when on a hill it allows you remove your foot from the brake and not roll back, without having to use the hand brake. Nice touch. Consumer Recommendation:Let the kids work and buy their own car. It builds character. Recognized Competition:Subaru Impreza WRX $26,000, Audi A3 $30,000, BMW 1 Series $29,000, Chevrolet Cobalt $25,000, Chevrolet Cruze $22,000, Honda Civic $20,000, Hyundai Elantra Touring $19,000, Mazda Speed3 $24,000, MINI Clubman $25,000, MINI Cooper $23,000, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution $34,000, Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback $28,000, Volkswage Golf $24,000, Volkswagen GTI $25,000. Good News:Fast, fun, great features with AWD handling and pretty good fuel numbers and most important it is made in America. Bad News:A little pricey. Standard Equipment:2.5 liter 265 horsepower turbocharged horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine, 5-speed manual transmission, continuous AWD, Vehicle dynamic stability and traction controls , front and side airbags, power windows and locks, seating for 5, 4-wheel independent sport tuned suspension MacPherson struts, coil springs stabilizer bar, double wishbone with stabilizer bar, power 4-wheel disc brakes with brake force distribution, power moon roof, leather, audio with CD player, 6-speakers, XM Satellite radio, Bluetooth hands free calling, iPod control capability, USB port.  Gas Stats:$4.19/ Gal avg. 2011 Chevrolet Cruze 1 LT (858)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze 1 LT 4-door sedan. OK, so I’m a Chevy man in part because my first car was a 1934 Chevrolet Coupe with a Rumble Seat and at 15 that was the ‘cats meow’. First loves are long lasting. By the way, please explain to the kids what a Rumble Seat is. And when you do I’ll bet you too will hum a little song that advertised Chevy back when unless you remember the words… “See the USA in your Chevrolet, America is asking you to call…” take a listen at this link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBH-pQ0QS6E. … and to see a video back in time with Dinah Shore 1952. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGZvQoPxhNs.

The new Cruze compact sedan replaces the Cobalt, intended to deliver style, roominess and upscale amenities while remaining fuel-efficient and inexpensive. It appears to have achieved those goals. It is offered with either a 1.8-liter Ecotec 4-cylinder engine or a 138-horsepower 1.4-liter Ecotec Turbo, which is the model I tested. Both come with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. Eco trim expects to produce 40 mpg highway. OnStar comes standard on the Cruze.

General Info:

Parts – US/Canadian 45%; Mexico 15%, Austria 19%
Engine – Engine – Austria, Transmission – Mexico.
Assembly – Lordstown, OH, USA
Class – Compact
Cars – Avalanche, Aveo, Aveo 5, Camaro, Cobalt, Colorado, Corvette, Cruze, Equinox, Express, Express Cargo Van, HHR, Impala, Malibu, Malibu Hybrid, Silverado 1500, 2500HD, 3500 HD, Hybrid, Suburban, Tahoe, Tahoe Hybrid, TrailBlazer, Traverse & Volt.

Opinion:

Road conditions – Bob raised the concern and now I can’t help but notice that roads are horrible in many areas, yet you see new surfacing in areas that are not as bad. What’s that all about Cal Trans? Are there relatives and friends in those areas that are chosen to spend our tax dollars?

One observation is a case in point. I don’t drive down Wilshire Blvd in LA very often, but if you have you can attest there are potholes you could repel down and get lost in. That is flat dangerous (no pun intended) and if someone gets hurt big lawsuits are likely for the negligence of Cal Trans Management.

PS on another note – A big kiss to those hard working CHP officers writing tickets to fill the state treasury. Of course they are more interested in saving their own asses as they rip off the poor folks of the little money they have for food for their families. How about a salute as you pass one of these lovable enforcers.

Handling & Performance:

Now that’s what I’m talking about when it comes to fuel economy which is fast becoming a critical cost component. And I’m always thrilled to see these kind of MPG numbers from non-green cars. Put the pedal to the metal however and those numbers will be pushed down significantly. Europe has been producing high mileage cars for years, because gas prices there have been double those in America.

When I visit the pump more often than I’d like I avoid ‘jack rabbit’ starts and rapid acceleration generally.

Styling:

Some say it is a plain Jane but for my money it is pretty darn nice looking. Anyway I think the girl next door was always the best.

Fit and Finish:

Excellent in this price range compact sedan.

Cost:

Outstanding.

Conveniences and comfort:

OnStar – if you’ve never experienced this system you will agree it is worth the price of admission. I’ve been in remote areas of Kings Canyon National park in California and have been able to talk with a real live person. They knew exactly where I was as if they were following me. It is a navigation system with turn by turn instructions available when cell based systems won’t work.

Consumer Recommendation:

This is a broad segment of the market that is not only affordable to buy and operate it is nice looking to boot. This is a great inexpensive, good looking family car and commuter.

Recognized Competition (MSRP):

Chevrolet Cruze $18,000, Dodge Avenger $19,000, Dodge Caliber $17,000, Ford Focus $17,000, Honda Civic $16,000, Honda CR-Z $19,000, Hyundai Elantra $15,000, Jeep Compass $15,000, Kia Forte $15,000, Mazda 3 $16,000, Mitsubishi Eclipse $19,000, Mitsubishi Lancer $15,000, Nissan Sentra $16,000, Scion tC $18,000, Subaru Impreza $17,000, Toyota Corolla $15,000, Volkswagen Golf $18,000, Volkswagen GTI $24,000, Volkswagen New Beetle $19,000.

Good News:

Fast, comfy, very good fuel economy, good size trunk and roomy back seat and ITS MADE IN AMERICA! Sorry I didn’t mean to yell.

Bad News:

The Jury is out to see if GM can get it back together. What do you think?

Standard Equipment:

1.4 liter 138 hp inline 4 cylinder turbocharged engine, 6-speed auto transmission, front side and side curtain airbags front and back, stability and traction controls, 4-wheel front disc and rear drum ABS brakes, power door locks and child security with rear LATCH anchors, theft deterrent & alarm, remote keyless entry, 6-months OnStar directions and connections with auto crash response and turn/turn navigation, tire pressure monitor, 16” wheels, power mirrors, stereo with CD and XM with 6 speakers, 8-way manual adjuster seats, air conditioning, 60/40 split folding rear seat, tilt and telescoping steering column, cloth seating, power windows.
