2012 Jeep Patriot SUV (921)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2012 Jeep Patriot SUV – unquestionably the grand daddy of off road vehicles. Forgive my bias, but I have been driving Jeeps over the past from the military years, in the Philippines, to touring New England and even to today. That, in spite of the fact that it is a part of the Chrysler Group but at the same time because it IS a part of a company redeemed by time… and good decisions in and by management, most recently by Lee Iacocca to save the company. Daimler / Mercedes-Benz also had a great affect on the Chrysler we see today. God Bless America.

General Information:

Parts from the US/ Canadian 70%, Mexico 19%. It is assembled in Belvidere, IL, U.S.A., Classification is SUV. Cars from Jeep: Compass, Grand Cherokee, Liberty, Patriot and Wrangler.

Opinion:

OK, I have a question: Where are our brave men in blue when they are ‘really’ needed to assist drivers using our highways? When there is a ladder or couch or other debris on the road I rarely see a CHP officer clearing the danger. But exceed the speed limit and the magically appear.

Another assist is needed when it comes to keeping traffic moving at a reasonable pace. – The situation: you are driving on a two lane road and there are turn-outs for slower traffic to use when they prefer to drive slower than the rest of those using the same road. Hey, there is nothing wrong with driving slower than others as long as you don’t insist on doing it a.) during rush hour b.) when holding up 5 or more cars who want to drive closer to the speed limit.

When you refuse to pull over and let others pass you, it a.) endangers others on the road when that frustrated driver tries to pass. b.) you are being an inconsiderate jerk.

I’ve never been cited for going too slow and I suspect none of you have either.

Some of those frustrated driver will make their displeasure known right there and then as they finally get the chance to pass you. Others will refer to that as ‘road rage’ which is very dangerous to all.

Try this: Be considerate and that will make us all safer on the highways and by-ways.

Handling & Performance:

Very good. Turning radius is not as good as I like to see, but if that’s all there is to criticize, most will be able to live with that.

Styling:

Classic. What else can I say, except to say thanks to Chrysler / Jeep for keeping the classic look to remind us of by-gone years past when men were men, women were women and ‘happy people’ stayed in the closet… and cars were cars, and we loved them with all their warts.

Fit and Finish:

Quite good fitting of seams and joints. There was a time when it could be said ‘it ain’t necessarily so’. Reminds me of the lyrics of a gospel song of times past as well.

Cost:

Competitive pricing with the entire field in this segment.

Conveniences and comfort:

Finally common sense prevails with a Bluetooth set up that is allowed while driving for the passenger to do – that’s a first, and it is done by voice command.

Another thing I appreciate is the speed sensitive door locking, but in the beginning I was startled by the klunk as the doors locked automatically as I drove off. It occurs to me that would be helpful if you are going through South Central Los Angeles, Watts or Compton, so you don’t have to remember to lock the doors – and trust me, that is no place to leave anything unlocked. God help the poor people who have to or choose to live there.

I’ll list options here because they are conveniences that are not high on my list of things you need – like tire pressure monitor, remote start, auto dimming rearview mirror, additional speakers, ‘autoStick transmission’ (like paddle shifters). There are a few others just as unnecessary not noted but I believe they are things that most of us don’t care to spend another $2,500 to have.

ONE exception for me is Bluetooth connectivity that should not be an option – it should be like seat belts or air bags.

Consumer Recommendation:

What a great list of competitors. I have test driven them all and my foreign car repair business in Southern California has serviced most of them over the years. On such an equal playing field, you will find your personal preferences have more to do with which you buy. Patriots will buy the Patriot, youth will buy the Asian offerings. Both groups will buy based on emotion. But that is ok, since they are equally as good. Japanese and American are the tried and true cars and the Korean brands are the new kid on the block. So far, even the new comers have had no really bad press.

The patriots who buy American are not the consumer of the long term, but the youth of today tend to be anti-American and wonder why they are out of work. If the parents throw them out, they may evolve and return to products made in America so they can work. Whatever your reasons are this is a good group of quality cars.

Save American Industry – throw your kids out or better yet don’t let them move back home after college. Then they will rethink what car they buy.

Recognized Competition:

Jeep Patriot $25,000, Dodge Nitro $24,000, Honda Element $24,000, Jeep Compass $26,000, Mazda 5 $22,000, Honda CR-V $28,000, Kia Sportage $22,000, Chevrolet HHR $21,000, Dodge Caliber $19,000, Ford Escape $27,000, Mitsubishi Outlander $25,000, Nissan Rogue $23,000, Subaru Forester $28,000, Suzuki SX4 Crossover $19,000, Toyota RAV4 $23,000, Toyota Matrix $22,000.
Good News:

Competitive, made in the USA, fair fuel economy for an SUV, classic styling dating back to the WWII Jeep – and if you are ever in the Philippines you will likely spend some time in a Jeep-ney which is their version of a taxi. To my readers who insist on a HONDA, consider this –Those Jeeps are left over from the 1940’s and they are still running, thank you! Let’s see if the Honda is still running after 72 years of hard driving.

Bad News:

None worth mentioning. I have to tell you (from experience) of time and owning an auto repair shop, there was a time when I wouldn’t buy a Chrysler product, but that is simply not true today. The great influences of Lee Iacocca and Daimler Mercedes Benz has made this company worthy.

Standard Equipment:

2.4 liter inline 4-cylinder 172 horsepower engine, continuously variable transmission, electronic stability control, 4-wheel anti-lock power disc brakes, front side and side curtain airbags, theft deterrent system, remote keyless entry, speed sensitive power locks, power windows, cruise control, power heated mirrors, removable LED rechargeable flashlight, rear window piper / washer and defroster, 115 and 12 volt outlets, heated front seats, power 6-way driver seat, 60/40 split folding back seat, audio with SIRIUS radio, audio input jack for mobile devices, climate control, information center, leather wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, tilt steering column, 17 inch aluminum wheels, fog lights and roof rails.

2012 Audi A5 2.0 TFSI Quattro MT6 Coupe (920)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2012 Audi A5 2.0 TFSI (Turbo fuel stratified injection), Quattro MT6 (Manual Transmission 6 speed) Coupe was first introduced in 2007 and remains a beauty.

I’m guessing you too would have the same reaction I did when it came to giving the car back. I was looking forward to the Jeep Patriot I would be testing next, but I really warmed up to this Audi. How I feel after the test says a lot if I really want to drive it longer. It says the experience was nearly perfect.

First of all the Audi has made some marvelous advances over the years and I believe Volkswagen has been a great influence in that improvement. That fact has been the case with so many other car companies that found it necessary to join forces. Ford’s takeover of Jaguar, Daimler / Mercedes-Benz’s takeover of Chrysler and others have all been positive.

You may know that I owned a foreign car repair shop for many years. I have to tell you in those early model years for Audi I wouldn’t give you 2 cents for the car. BMW was junk then too, to be fair, and FIAT (fix it again Tony) was a frequent visitor. But Fiat was cheap to fix, while Audi and BMW were pricey to keep running. That being said, Audi has made huge improvements and I was forced to rethink my opinion of the brand.

It reminds me of how America has influenced economic policy to the world generally. When you bring peoples of the world together you get the best of each ethnic group to be better in the end to the whole. I think it has as much to do with how stagnant one view of solving problems is as compared to how diversity of thought makes us better.
General Information:

Parts from the US/ Canadian 1%; Germany 75%, Engine – Hungary; Transmission – Germany. Classification is SUV. Cars from Audi: A3, A4, A4 Avant, A5, A6, A6 Avant, A7, A8, Q5, Q7, R8 S4, S5, S6 & TT.
Opinion:

Driving demands that you pay attention all the time and keep your speed consistent. Cruise control helps a lot in this area and will help you make lane changes slower rather than quick / fast movements. Signaling also helps you hesitate in changing lanes and helps those around you to know what you intend to do.

Speed, in itself, does not cause accidents but rather erratic movement coupled with traveling at much faster speeds than the normal flow of traffic. Be aware of traffic around you constantly and be considerate of others when you are thinking of cutting in front of another car that forces them to brake. That is irresponsible driving.

Finally if you plan ahead and give yourself more time to get to your destination you will avoid stress and eliminate the chances of causing or being involved in a traffic accident. Remember, driving at break-neck speed will save very little time for all the dangerous movements needed.

Handling & Performance:

Wonderful – simply wonderful. This is one of the few cars that earned me a speeding ticket because it is so easy to exceed road limits beyond the ability of the average car. Performance cars like this Audi handle the road like a pro! For sure it makes a better driver out of all of us.

And speaking of performance, the 211 hp with a 6-speed manual transmission will take you from 0-60 mph in just 6.4 exhilarating seconds.

Styling:

Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I found most folks I spoke with felt it is one beautiful example of what a car should look like. The model I tested was painted a bright white that is striking and the interior was a linen beige color … really cool.

Fit and Finish:

Excellent.

Cost:

Well, we’re in the high rent district but the competition makes this Audi A5 appear to be a bargain in class.

Conveniences and comfort:

The A5 includes features I appreciate, but there are a few more it doesn’t include, like adaptive cruise control, sensors for blind spot detection of approaching traffic.

One negative that I’ve noticed that I wonder about is the HD Radio. It automatically kicks in but I found it to be annoyance because of static and volume and reception fluctuation. If there is a fix to that I shouldn’t have to figure out how to eliminate the odd noises and poor reception.

Consumer Recommendation:

If you are a performance motivated driver, you gotta love this Audi. Relatively speaking it is affordable. I like it better than the others noted here for many reasons there isn’t enough print space to explain. In summary, it just does what all the others can do, but better.

Recognized Competition:

Audi A5 $37,000, BMW 3-Series $45,000, BMW 6-Series $74,000, Cadillac CTS $36,000, Chevrolet Camaro $23,000, Chevrolet Corvette $50,000, Volvo C70 $40,000, Hyundai Equus $59,000, Infiniti EX $36,000, Infiniti G Convertible $47,000, Infiniti G Coupe $38,000, Lexus IS C $41,000, Mercedes-Benz E-Class $50,000.

Good News:

Well priced luxury in class, good warranty, fast.

Bad News:

Standard Equipment:

2.0 TFSI Quattro inline 4-cylinder 211 hp engine, 6-speed manual transmission, Quattro permanent all wheel drive, 18” 10-spoke wheels, power assist ABS disc brakes, stability control, speed sensitive power steering, tire pressure monitor, tilting glass sunroof, power heated mirrors, rain and light sensors, leather seating, 8-way power front seats, trip computer, climate control, audio with SIRIUS Satellite and CD, front side curtain and drive knee airbags, anti theft alarm and LATCH system. 4-year / 50,000 mile warranty with 12 year corrosion protection.

2012 Nissan cube (918)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2012 Nissan CUBE 1.8 S Small station wagon.

General Information:

Parts from the US/ Canadian n/a; Classification is Small Station Wagon. Cars from Nissan:  Altima, Altima Hybrid, Armada, cube, Frontier, GT-R, JUKE, LEAF, Maxima, Murano, Murano CrossCabriolet, NV Cargo, NV Passenger, Pathfinder, Quest, Rogue, Sentra, Titan, Versa, XTerra and Z.

Opinion:

Fuel economy is really getting important now with prices sure to rise to $8-10 per gallon if the current trend continues. Change is needed to get back to policies that will not only develop alternative energy sources, but to realize oil is still needed until those other sources are developed. What will it take to for people to demand sensible and responsible oil consumption?  Will it be that you will pay $200 or more to fill your tank with gas. And that translates to as much as $10,000 per year before folks will be convinced radical policies are not in our best interest. If prices do go to those levels that will mean Obama has been re-elected and it will be too late to fix the problem.

Think about it. . . as you recall it was Henry Ford who said “Thinking is the hardest work, which is why so few people do it”.

Handling & Performance:

This is a nice handling little wagon with a good turning radius and generally an all around nice around town car. It is also pretty good on the highway except it is a little “light on its feet” which is good for dancing but not so good on the highway on a breezy day.

CVT – Continuously Variable Transmission. Today, several car manufacturers, including General Motors, Audi, Honda and Nissan are designing their drivetrains around CVTs to replace planetary conventional automatic transmissions. The concept is not new with the first patent filed in 1886 after it was conceptualized by Leonardo da Vinci about 500 years earlier.

Of course CVT technology has been refined and improved. CVT employs a pulley based system or are Toroidal (replace belts and pullys with discs and power rollers) or Hydrostatic in design (that usesvariable-displacement pumps to vary the fluid flow into hydrostatic motors).

The benefits are that CVTs have far fewer parts that deliver a smoother ride because it eliminates “shift shock”, improved fuel efficiency, better acceleration, better control over emissions as CVTs replace inefficient fluid torque converters used in current conventional automatic transmissions. Whichever version of the CVT works best, it would appear likely to be the choice of all car makers in the future.

Styling:

Of course, we know, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but Ugly Betty comes to mind. Cube is odd looking but such design has become acceptable in today’s world. The design is not aerodynamic, and that’s ok too because we’re not trying to break the ground speed record in our transportation vehicles. Surely it is spacious, especially in that it has headroom an NBA player would appreciate. Ultimately the consumer will decide if a car has to be pretty to make it. That fact of not being pretty was echoed by virtually everyone I talked with.

The first thing people noticed, with a curious look, is the “hairpiece” setting atop the dash. Or you may see it as piece of shag carpet left over from carpeting your house in the 1950s / 60s.

Fit and Finish:

Good.

Cost:

Very good.

Conveniences and comfort:

Good. I especially appreciate the ease of Bluetooth connection and if you use Pandora on your iPhone it feeds right into the audio. On the other hand I don’t care for the visors that don’t extend to cover the side window.

I like the large swing out door to the Cargo area, which is very small, but the rear seat folds down that provides a larger area if you won’t need rear seating.

Consumer Recommendation:

Remember the Rotary engine introduced in the 1960s? Well my suggestion is that if the cube is your choice, be sure the warranty is bullet proof and covers the CVT transmission. If Consumer Guide is a credible source for you, they gave it the 2012 Best Buy Award.

Recognized Competition:

Nissan cube $15,000, Chevrolet  HHR $19,000, Ford Transit Connect $22,000, Jeep Compass $19,000,  Honda Element $21,000, Kia Soul $14,000, Scion xB $16,000, Toyota Matrix $19,000.

Good News:

Good fuel economy, well priced.

Bad News:

Some will say it is unattractive.

Standard Equipment:

1.8 Liter 4-cylinder engine, CVT continuous variable transmission, power assist ABS front disc and rear drum brakes, 15” steel wheels, front and side curtain airbags, LATCH system, traction control, dynamic control and brake force distribution, tire pressure monitor, security system with immobilizer, 6-way driver manual seat adjustment, cloth seats, 60/40 split fold down rear bench seat, leather wrapped steering wheel with cruise and audio controls, audio system with 6-speakers, iPod interface, Bluetooth hands free phone system, air conditioning, remote keyless entry, power windows and auto locking feature, intermittent wipers front and rear, power mirrors, swing rear cargo door.

2012 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium AWD SUV (917)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2012 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium AWD SUV.

The 2012 continues with minor changes after the Outback was redesigned for 2010, with a new standard audio system for all Premium trims, which includes AM/FM stereo, single-disc CD player with Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity and audio streaming, iPod capability and USB port. A new Harman Kardon display-type audio system is optional for the Premium trims. A new Alloy Wheel Package for 2.5i includes 17-inch alloy wheels and fog lights.

General Information:

Parts from the US/ Canadian 40%, Japan 35%; Engine & Transmission – Japan. It is assembled in Lafayette, Indiana, USA, Classification is SUV AWD. Cars from Subaru:  Forester, Impreza, Impreza WRX, Legacy, Outback & Tribeca.

Opinion:

Driving requires attention to just that – DRIVING -. It doesn’t include sight-seeing, sleeping or TEXTING. Sorry, I didn’t mean to yell, but if the police REALLY do a service to all those sharing the highways and byways they should watch more closely for dangerous use of our cell phones. They seem to be motivated only by ‘campaigns’, like April of 2011 was Cell Phone Awareness month. So every other month it is ok to break the law?

The first fine for illegal use of a cell phone  is just under $200… but the second offence will cost you about $450. I have no problem with that law any more than the enforcement of radical, unsafe or drunk driving or excessive speed.

Well I just observed a young woman in the #1 (fast) lane speeding up, slowing down, speeding up and slowing down over and over for miles. So I pulled along side of her to find the answer to the erratic behavior. She was texting.

Handling & Performance:

This is a perfect size for the average family for a great run about, around town, easy to park  SUV. It’s also good on the highway. AWD is standard on all Subaru’s so it adds to handling characteristics as well as providing another degree of safety. It is 170 horsepower  powerful. Nice.

Styling:

Smooth lines, which is more to my liking, than a lot of products out there. How about you? Or do you like the edgy and busy lines. Inside the wood accents give an elegant touch to an otherwise plain Jane look. Plain in a woman is my preference since you can’t really improve on perfection, but the embellishment in a car does actually add to the beauty.

Fit and Finish:

Good fit and elegant finishing touches.

Cost:

Really good and number one, in my opinion, in this class.

Conveniences and comfort:

Good standard features and overall comfort is very good. Bluetooth was easy to set up which isn’t always the case with many of the test vehicles I drive. After getting nailed for not using hands free I’m more aware of the need to use it every time I get into the vehicle.

Consumer Recommendation:

The Outback price point is the best of the bunch as only the more expensive brands are 4WD or AWD. This is at the top of my list in this class. The field is small and when you determine what you are willing to pay for your new car it is even more manageable as you can limit the number you will want to test drive.

Recognized Competition:

Subaru Outback $25,000, Dodge Journey $26,000, Honda Crosstour $34,000, Acura TSX Sport Wagon $31,000, BMW 3 Series Sports Wagon $40,000, Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon $41,000: Land Rover Range Rover $79,000, Mazda CX-7 $34,000, Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback $21,000,  Saab 9-3 Sport Combi $30,000, Toyota Venza $29,000, Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen $20,000, Volvo V50 $29,000,.

Good News:

Decent fuel economy for AWD SUV, best price in class for what you get.

Bad News:

None noted.

Standard Equipment:

2.5 liter 170 horsepower horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine, 6-speed manual transmission, 17” alloy wheels, all wheel drive, dynamic control or as some call it, Stability Control, front side and side curtain airbags, 4-wheel ABS (anti-locking) power disc brakes, tire pressure monitor, anti-theft alarm & engine immobilizer, rollover sensor, independent raised suspension, Roof rails, privacy glass, air conditioning, audio system with CD player, Bluetooth hands free phone,  10-way power adjustable driver seat, cruise control, electronic parking brake, Leather wrapped steering wheel, tilt/telescopic column, power windows / locks, power mirrors, remote keyless entry and 60/40 split fold down reclining rear seat.

2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0 I Premium 5 Door (916)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0 I Premium 5 Door small wagon.

Subaru says that Impreza is redesigned, with all-new 4- and 5-door trims and a new, more efficient power train offering a 30 percent increase in fuel economy over the previous model. It is powered by a new 2.0-liter 148-horsepower boxer engine, and comes with a choice of a 5-speed manual transmission or an enhanced, upgraded Lineartronic continuously variable transmission. A more aggressive new design draws focus to the Impreza’s AWD heritage with powerful arches, a longer wheelbase and redesigned door and roof trim and front seats yields gains in passenger and cargo room. Interior upgrades include roomier cabins, higher-quality, soft-touch interior materials and the latest infotainment and connectivity technology, including Bluetooth, audio streaming, iPod capability and six speakers; a new navigation system is available for Premium trims.

Nice words but in truth it is pretty much as I saw it. What’s most impressive to me is the fuel economy in a car that is affordable all at the same time. Ok, so it is a fairly compact car in the sedan or small wagon that I tested. And for a small car it is truly roomy for average folks. For the ‘big’ people it is a little cramped and not suggested.

General Information:

Parts from the US/ Canadian 0%, Japan 100%; Engine & Transmission – Japan. It is assembled in Japan, Classification is Small Wagon. Cars from Subaru:  Forester,Impreza, Impreza WRX, Legacy, Outback & Tribeca.

Opinion:

Here is an echo of a prior opinion about the cost of driving is going up thanks to the CHP enforcing California legislation pointed at raising revenue for a corrupt government hunger for cash to perpetuate a level of government services we can little afford.

But the important thing to remind you of is that you too can be a victim of government hunger for more so they can waste more. Friend Richard reminds me that “the thirst when the well is fullest is the thirst that is unquenchable”. The actual quote is “Is not dread of thirst when your well is full, the thirst that is unquenchable?”

―Kahlil Gibran, Lebanese American artist, poet & author of The Prophet

Either way / either version the truth of the matter is that you too may have noticed in the past week a dramatic increase in our fellow travelers pulled over by the CHP. They are hell bent of separating you from the little money you have. . . to put a hurt on you. That my friend is how they “Protect and Serve”. What a crock that is.

So – be on your guard and don’t be a victim. The bad guys are out in force. Don’t give them a target. Slow down and starve the monster government we have in place in today’s world.

Handling & Performance:

VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control) is composed of 2 main systems used with full time 4 wheel drives. VDC is traction control that senses vehicle direction and uses brake, throttle and engine management to help maintain stability. When the wheels are spinning without traction or the vehicle is not going in the direction it is being steered, the VDC system kicks in. Direction: uses brakes to slow down wheels to reduce spin and help control vehicle direction. Skidding: yaw and steering wheel sensors use brakes to slow down spinning wheels and re-direct power to the wheel(s) with the best traction to re-gain control. Engine power: use engine output to slow spinning by reducing spark to cylinders to cut back power and help re-gain control.

Another successful refinement to antilock braking systems has been electronic brake force distribution, or EBD. It is based on the principle that not every wheel needs to put forth the same effort into bringing the car to a stop.

EBD is based on the principle that the weight being supported by the wheels of your car isn’t evenly distributed. Some wheels carry a heavier load than others and will require more brake force in order to bring the car to a stop without it going out of control. The amount of weight being supported by a wheel shifts during the braking process, so the amount of force necessary at each wheel can change rapidly. An EBD system detects how much weight is being supported by each wheel, and then changes the amount of braking power sent to each wheel on an instant-by-instant basis.

Styling:

Design definitely uses sharp edges and it seems to work for the Impreza. It is not my favorite style technique because it almost stands out too much.

Fit and Finish:

Good.

Cost:

As expected and the entire segment gives absolutely more value for your hard earned dollar.

Conveniences and comfort:

Perhaps one of the most useful features of modern cars is the simple brake release delay referred to as “Hill Start”. This feature is most useful in cars with manual transmissions. When you are ready to start and remove your foot from the brake pedal the brake stays engaged for a brief few seconds giving you the chance to release the clutch as you apply the gas without rolling backwards. Nice.

Consumer Recommendation:

This is a well priced segment of the market and most are closely aligned. Observe the list of features and pay most attention to the safety features such as stability control and dynamic braking. These are particularly important when you have young drivers who will be using the car. Such technology will do much to keep inexperienced drivers out of trouble – accident free.

Recognized Competition:

Subaru Impreza $19,000, Toyota Corolla $16,000, Volkswagen Golf $18,000, Hyundai Elantra Tourning $16,000, Scion tC $19,000, Volkswagen Beetle $22 ,000: Audi S4 $47,000, Chevrolet Cruze $17,000, Hyundai Elantra $15,000, Kia Forte $20,000, Mazda 3 $23,000, Nissan Sentra $18,000, Chevrolet HHR $19,000, Kia Forte Koup $19,000, Ford Focus $21,000, Honda Civic $16,000, Honda Fit $15,000, Volkswagen GTI $24,000, Mitsubishi Lancer $16,000, Toyota Matrix $19,000, Volvo C30 $25,000.

Good News:

Very good fuel economy, important new safety controls.

Bad News:

Only fair interior space.

Standard Equipment:

2.0 liter 148 horsepower horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine, 5-speed manual transmission, 4-wheel independent suspension, 16” aluminum wheels, all wheel drive, dynamic control or as some call it, Stability Control, front side and side curtain airbags with driver knee airbag, 4-wheel ABS (anti-locking) power disc brakes with brake force distribution, tire pressure monitor, anti-theft alarm & engine immobilizer, daytime running lights, air conditioning, audio system with auxiliary input, steering wheel controls, Bluetooth hands free phone, USB port for iPod connectivity, cruise control, tile/telescopic column, power windows / locks, power mirrors, remote keyless entry, 60/40 split fold down rear seat and trip computer.

2012 Nissan Murano LE FWD SUV/Crossover (915)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2012 Nissan Murano LE FWD SUV/ Crossover.

The Murano is Nissan’s midsize crossover that received its first redesign as an early 2009 model after skipping the 2008 model year. First introduced as a 2003 model, Murano is named after the elegant sculpted glass art that comes from the islands near Venice, as a tribute to the dramatic exterior and interior styling. It combines the desirable attributes of a truck-based SUV, such as cargo capacity, ride height and available all-wheel drive, with the refinement, handling, and ride comfort of a sedan.

Crash-test results are impressive, but you’ll notice a limited rear visibility which is a notable drawback.

General Info:

Parts – US/Canadian – n/a

Assembly – Japan

Class  – SUV / Crossover

Cars – Altima, Altima Hybrid, Armada, Cube, Frontier, GT-R, JUKE, LEAF, Maxima, Murano Cross Cabriolet, NV Cargo, Pathfinder, Quest, Rogue, Sentra, Titan, Versa & Xterra.

Handling & Performance:

The 3.5-liter 260 horsepower V6 engine is powerful and delivers a respectable 19 mpg overall. The CVT (Continuous Variable) Transmission is recognized as one of the best on the market. Handling remains responsive and gave me a secure feeling.

Styling:

The interior is stylish, functional and roomy with comfortable rear seats and easy access are pluses.

Fit and Finish:

Very good and typical for Nissan and Japanese cars generally.

Cost:

Ok, so it is a bit pricey at first blush, but the ‘quality’ is in there and Nissan is perhaps the oldest Japanese made US import that has enjoyed a great REPutation for quality and carefree operation. Further, the higher price is in part due to the very complete list of standard features.

Conveniences and comfort:

This model includes nearly everything that is offered by any luxury automobile, most of which are not needed – that is if you’d rather save about $10,000 by opting for one of the competitors listed.

Consumer Recommendation:

There is a broad array of players in this segment of the market because of the long running love affair the world has with SUV’s. Lot’s to choose from is good news except that it will be a daunting task for you in select the best for your need. I’m sorry to say although I have test driven all, I’m rather indifferent with the exception that I would urge you to include the lower priced in the list here.

Why, because the lower priced brands noted here are new kids on the block, as with the Korean brands (Hyundai and Kia), or American brands hungry for a larger share of the market. Those lower priced brands are, in my opinion, the best bang for the buck in an uncertain economic world.                                                                                                                                                                                      Recognized Competition:

Nissan Murano $39,000, Acura RDX $33,000, Audi Q5 $36,000, Buick Enclave $35,000, Cadillac SRX $42,000, Chevrolet Equinox $25,000, Chevrolet Traverse $30,000, Dodge Durango $38,000, Dodge Journey $26,000, Ford Edge $28,000, Ford Explorer $29,000, GMC Acadia $33,000, GMC Terrain $26,000, Honda Crosstour $28,000, Honda Pilot$39,000, Hyundai Santa Fe $25,000, Hyundai Veracruz $28,000, Infiniti EX $37,000, Jeep Grand Cherokee $27,000, Kia Sedona $25,000, Kia Sorento $28,000, Lexus RX 350 $39,000, Lincoln MKX $40,000, Mazda CX-7 $34,000, Mazda CX-9 $34,000, Mercedes Benz GLK $36,000, Mitsubishi Endeavor $32,000, Nissan Cross Cabriolet $45,000, Subaru Tribeca $36,000, Toyota Highlander $29,000, Toyota Venza $29,000, Volkswagen Tiguan $32,000, Volvo XC60 $33,000.

Good News:

Powerful, smoothly quiet, roomy interior, nice fit and finish, easy entry / exit access and fair fuel economy given the power level. If price is not important to you, this car comes ‘loaded’ with conveniences.

Bad News:

Poor Rear visibility and with increased fuel prices many will reject it on that basis alone.

Standard Equipment:

3.5 liter 260 hp V6 engine, CVT auto trans, front wheel drive, 20” aluminum alloy wheels, front side and side curtain airbags, LATCH child system, 4-wheel anti-lock power brake system, dynamic control, traction control, brake force distribution, tire pressure monitor, security system with engine immobilizer, 8-way power driver seat, 4-way power front passenger seat, heated front and rear seats, 60/40 fold flat split  seatback, leather, wood tone trim, leather wrapped heated steering wheel, cruise control, power tilt and telescopic leather wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise control switches, driver memory settings, 7” color display with rearview monitor, Bose audio system with CD and 9-speakers, auxiliary audio and video inputs, XM satellite radio, USB with iPod interface, Bluetooth, rain sensing wipers, climate control, intelligent key with push button ignition, keyless entry, power one touch windows and locks, dual panel moon roof, 3-power outlets, Xenon headlights, fog lights, heated power mirrors, power tailgate and roof rails.

2012 Buick Verano FWD 1 SL (914)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2012 Buick Verano FWD 1SL. It is Buick’s new compact sedan where they say the goal was creating an exceptionally quiet compact sedan that is even quieter than other larger cars. I believe they accomplished their goal and inside is a comfortable and refined compact. It is one of the quietest cars I’ve tested.

Verano features standard On Star safety and security technology. If you have never experienced it you should test it out and you too will be sold on the value. There is a peace of mind that alone is worth the price of admission. On Star includes a free Vehicle Diagnostics service and the navigation capability includes turn by turn voice directions with no need to look at a screen display. In practice I was traveling with a fellow journalist and were so busy talking we missed our turn and had traveled a long way before we realized we were lost in a remote and unfamiliar desert area. With the push of the On Star blue button we were connected to a live person to help get us out of trouble. They stayed with us until we were directed back to civilization.

Another time my wife and I were returning to LA from San Diego, California late at night and we were directed to an open gas station we surely would not have found by ourselves. It simply  removes the anxiety when you have nowhere to turn for that kind of assistance.

OnStar also has the capability of making voice activated phone calls without a cell phone. And a Remote Link application allows you to unlock your doors, start the car, activate lights and horn to locate it, get roadside assistance and more. Really cool.

On Star is exclusive to GM cars and trucks and there are about 6 million subscribers which makes it a viable safety net for the foreseeable future.

Handling & Performance:

Verano is powered by a 2.4-liter Ecotec 4-cylinder engine linked to a standard 6-speed automatic transmission. A turbocharged 2.0-liter engine will be offered later.

Styling:

Very “Today” in its look and feel. And apparently the design led one guy to ask if it was as fast as it looks? No, I hadn’t thought of it being fast but it does have that look.

Fit and Finish:

Excellent.

Cost:

It is very well priced for the quality, comfort, and quiet ride you get in this class segment of the market and even beyond.

Conveniences and comfort:

In addition to the unique On Star feature, the listing of standard equipment below is broad for the price. I suspect that is, in part, due to the fact that GM has been humbled as it fell from the number one car maker position in the industry, which they enjoyed for about 100 years. Thus they must try ever harder to recapture the top spot… if they ever can. In the meantime you get a lot of great features for the money.

Consumer Recommendation:

Buick division holds the distinction of being the ‘grand daddy’ of GM brands. Buick models are sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, China, Taiwan, and Israel, with China being its largest market.  Many current Buick models are shared with other GM global subsidiaries.

Recognized Competition:

Buick Verano $26,000, Acura TSX $30,000, Chevrolet Impala $26,000, Ford Fusion $27,000, Honda Accord $24,000, Hyundai Sonata $26,000, Infiniti G Sedan $33,000, Kia Optima $27,000, Lexus IS  $34,000, Nissan Altima $21,000, Subaru Legacy $25,000, Suzuki Kizashi $20,000, Toyota Camry $25,000, Volkswagon Jetta $23,000, Volvo S40 $28,000.

Good News:

Impressive fuel economy for a Racey, sporty and luxury looking Compact car that is well priced. On Star system is standard. It is comfortable and quiet riding.

Bad News:

None noted

Standard Equipment:

2.4 Liter 4-cylinder 180 horsepower engine, 6-speed automatic transmission, rear park assist, On Star turn by turn navigation, 4-wheel ABS disc brakes, stability and traction controls, front, side and head curtain and airbag sensing system, rear seat mounted airbags, daytime running lights, tire pressure monitoring, 18” allow wheels, theft alarm, leather trim front sport bucket heated seats, driver 6-way seat passenger 8-way manual adjustable seat, power windows & locks, keyless start with remote starter, climate control, cruise control, power outlets front and rear, tilt and telescopic steering column with heated wheel and controls, XM radio with 7” color touch screen, CD/MP3 player and Bose 9 speakers, aux and USB port, Bluetooth, power heated mirrors, fog lights and headlights auto on/off control.

2012 Kia Rio SX (908)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2012 Kia Rio SX that is longer, lower and wider. It is powered by a new gasoline-direct injection 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine with great fuel economy that is much needed today. It is mated to a standard 6-speed automatic transmission. It is a ‘big’ little car in that it is roomy for a small compact which by the way is true with all players in this class. It is amazing what can be done with a small car when it doesn’t have to be luxurious and big.

And although there are applications where ‘size matters’; when you must carry a lot of folks and things, but for the day to day driver efficiency and economy will be increasingly important. We’re destined to see lean times so I suggest you prepare to survive the present wasteful spending.

Yes, this is a very basic segment of the market, and while not plush it is well appointed and simply fits a niche for the cost conscious traveler / commuter.

General Information: Parts from the US / Canada 4%, Korea 90%. It is assembled in Korea; Classification is Compact. Cars from Kia – Forte, Forte Koup, Optima, Optima Hybrid, Rio, Rio5, Sedona. Sorento, Soul and Sportage.

Opinion:

Boycott toll roads. California built the first ‘freeway’ – the 110 or what became known as the Pasadena freeway to Los Angeles in 1952. Until recently the state has resisted attempts to tax folks to use any highway or byway. Now there are some attempts to not only take our tax dollars through the purchase of gas they are slipping in a back door to take additional money to use the highways.

I simply refuse to use them and if we all resist the scheme to bilk us out of more of our hard earned money they will die on the vine of corruption. It is kind of like paying for public schools by all while if you truly want your kids to get a decent education you must also pay for private / church supported schools. We pay twice for the same product.

That’s my opinion, what’s yours?

Handling & Performance:

It has a good tight feel for a compact. It is zippy and easy handling and a generally great overall around town convenient car to own. Cars with lower horsepower generally have manual transmissions, but the 6-speed auto trans is well mated and therefore more responsive than I expected it to be.

Styling:

Highly sculpted, sloping shoulder lines and wedge-shaped exteriors and an aggressive look of other Kia models such as the Optima and Sportage.

Fit and Finish:

Good.

Cost:

The field is within a couple of thousand dollars and all are very affordable to buy and to operate.

Conveniences and comfort:

The basic needs are met and much more with an amazing array of modern gadgets in this class. I particularly appreciate hill assist. Basic is a relative term and although I miss climate control I find basic air conditioning like manual seats is something you set and forget. . . so I can live without those. It doesn’t have ‘memory’ settings for every occasion but I find I never use those things anyway, know what I mean?

Consumer Recommendation:

The competition is tough and capable. Toyota Yaris and the Fiat 500 made an impression on me when I tested them recently. All of the Korean contenders have been earning the respect of consumers. Kia is owned by Hyundai and they are a company worth considering.

I wasn’t crazy about the Scion models, and although the Smart is big in Europe where streets are narrow and parking is at a premium, it hasn’t gone over well in the US.

Recognized Competition:

Kia Rio $18,000, Chevrolet Aveo $12,000, Chevrolet Sonic $14,000, Fiat 500 $16,000, Ford Fiesta $16,000, Honda Fit $15,000, Hyundai Accent $14,000, Hyundai Veloster $17,000, Mazda 2 $15,000, Nissan Versa $15,000, Scion iQ $15,000, Scion xB $16,000, Scion xD $15,000, Smart fortwo $12,000, Suzuki SX4 Sport $17,000, Toyota Yaris $17,000.

Good News:

My kinda fuel economy, good consumer reviews and an all around efficient commuter.

Bad News:

Lightweight as you’d expect in the class.

Standard Equipment:

1.6 liter 138 hp 4-cylinder engine, 6 speed automatic trans, electric power steering, 17” alloy wheels, front, side and side curtain airbags, LATCH child system, power  ABS brake system, traction and stability control and management systems, hill assist, air conditioning, power windows and locks, remote keyless entry, audio with CD/MP3 and SIRIUS satellite, USB & Auxiliary jacks, manual adjustable driver’s seat, 60/40 split folding rear seats, cruise control, Bluetooth, tilt & telescopic steering column, leather wrapped steering wheel and gearshift knob, steering wheel controls, cargo cover, auto headlights, fog lights and heated power folding mirrors.

2012 Volkswagen Beetle 2.5 L (911)

[wpsgallery]

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle 2.5 L. VW is Europe’s largest automaker and as you may know it is responsible for Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini and VW cars. The Beetle only looks small and at about 3,000 pounds it is a solid automobile.

Perhaps the most interesting note about testing this car is that several people approached me to ask about it. A few parents told me their daughter wants one when she starts driving.

Since VW America landed in the US in 1955 it became the most talked about and sought after little car. And I’m sure that many like me were able to have inexpensive transportation to get them through school. In 1968 the movie ‘The Love Bug’   “Herbie” became a household word.

No matter the reasons it has drawn a passionate and almost ‘cult’ following in spite of the fact it was Hitler’s baby. It was originally simply named Volkswagen which means “the Peoples Car”. It had many other names here in America from the Bug, Beetle, V-Dub or even a Pregnant Roller Skate.

I suspect VW is the only good things that came out of World War II that has remained a stigma  on the German people even to this day. I used to work for a Jewish man who drove a Mercedes Benz and he used to say it was the German’s legacy to the Jews. If that is the case, it is also fair to say that the Beetle was the German’s gift to the common man. . . kinda like what Henry Ford did for the auto industry a few decades earlier with the Model A that virtually everyone could afford to own.

The 2012 Beetle offers two engines and transmissions: the 2.5 liter five cylinder engine mated to a six-speed automatic and the 2.0 liter TSI turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a six-speed dual clutch automatic. Also five and six-speed manual transmissions are available.

Handling & Performance:

Solid and a delight to drive. it’s a big little car that is great to zip around town as well as heavy enough to feel safe on the highway and freeway speeds.

I had a friend while in college who’d tell the story of the earliest of V-Dubs that he encountered a very windy day going skiing where the wind actually picked up the car from one lane and dropped in the next. It is certain the early VW Bugs were very light but I always wondered how strong the wind was. As Richard says, “The story doesn’t have to be true to be good”.

Styling:

VW has stayed true to the original design and I believe that is the reason it has crossed generations and retained its popularity. In fact that crossover popularity was helped by the movie “The Love Bug” as future generations of drivers grew up having seen that movie.

The third-generation Beetle is longer, wider, and roomier than even the last car. The odd roofline and long dashboard are replaced by more conventional dimensions and proportions – a great improvement in my opinion. Nice job VW.

Fit and Finish:

Outstanding.

Cost:

My test vehicle was over $23,000 but the base price is $18,995. It is worth the price of admission.

Conveniences and comfort:

Well, I’ve owned 4 VW’s including three Beetles and one Karmann Ghia in the 1960s. You got reliability and economy in the purchase price and operation, but nothing else. They didn’t get much more basic than the original. But today’s New Beetle is anything but basic. Great car around town, a great car for school driving age kids, but also great on the highway.

Consumer Recommendation:

German engineering from a company dedicated to excellence. I attended a press conference where the President of VW told us what the company’s philosophy is and I’m all in.

About half of the cars they produce in Europe are ‘clean diesel’ and faced with $8.00 a gallon fuel you know efficiency is important. I might suggest you look into VW products with TDI (Turbo Diesel) power.

VW says ‘Efficient TDI Clean Diesel Models Go on Sale in 2012, Expected to be the most Fuel-Efficient Beetle Ever’.

Recognized Competition:

Volkswagen Beetle $23,000, Chevrolet Cruze $21,000, Fiat 500 $18,000, Ford Focus $18,000, Honda Fit $18,000, Hyundai Veloster $17,000, Kia Forte Koup $18,000, Mazda 3 $19,000, MINI Cooper $23,000, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution $34,000, Nissan Sentra $20,000, Subaru Impreza $19,000, Suzuki SX4 Crossover $16,000, Toyota Yaris $16,000.

Good News:

It’s a VW that equals quality and reliability, great ride, fair fuel economy.

Bad News:

None noted.

Standard Equipment:

2.5 liter 170 horsepower, 6-speed automatic transmission front wheel drive, panoramic sunroof with power tilt and slide, leather wrapped muti-function steering wheel, keyless access and push button start, trip computer, Fender premium audio with touch screen and Sirius satellite, 18” alloy wheels, tire pressure monitor, air conditioning, cruise control, two power outlets, fog lights, power windows locks and mirrors, LATCH child seat anchors, manual 8-way adjustable front seats, front side and side curtain airbags, 50/50 split folding rear seat, 4-wheel ABS power disc brakes, speed sensitive power steering, anti-slip regulation, brake pressure distribution, stability control.

2012 Buick Regal GS (910)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2012 Buick Regal GS. Wow, is this an international production?! A US manufacturer, a car that is assembled in Canada, the engine and transmission is from Germany and 15% of parts are from Mexico. Well, hopefully we have taken the best of many countries to put out a great product. And it would appear they have given this careful thought… or not!

Remember the old Buick’s of the 1950s and 1960s? One model was called a Road Master, but of course we kids called it a Road Hog. Yep, it was huge, bulky and albeit a classic today over half century later, today’s Buick’s are classy looking but I doubt it will ever be a classic since, it like most of the field play it safe. And when they aren’t safe, we call them Scion on the cheap end or Lamborghini on the obscene pricing end of the spectrum. Both approaches are over the top.

Opinion:

Henry Ford, father of the automated production line that revolutionized the auto industry was because he was a thinker. That led to the concept made manifest and is now so much of the production line is being manned by robots. Hey I have to ask my union friends – do those robots pay union dues?

Perhaps it will be computers and Robotics that will help to end the union’s curse on America. My guess is that top management would agree that curse has been the major reason for the need for a bail out by tax payers. Whether you agree with the bail out or not we who study the industry know why the need was there. It still is and we need to give a lot of thought on how we can eliminate the cancer.

I wonder what Henry Ford would think of the growing union stronghold, or should I say Stranglehold. It was Henry who said “Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is probably the reason so few engage in it”. Well, someone out there will think of a way before a total melt down.

Think about it!

Handling & Performance:

Regal is a pleasure to drive with responsive power for a four cylinder. My test vehicle had a 6-speed Manual transmission but some may want to opt for the 6-speed automatic.

Styling:

Beautiful. Nice job GM.

Fit and Finish:

Excellent assembly. Is it Man or Machine?

Cost:

You get what you pay for and this is a lovely automobile and I’d say it is priced right, all things considered. However, after just coming out of a Nissan Versa it gave me pause to reflect on saving $17,000 if I bought the Versa. Would I rather have that in the bank for a rainy day? I’ll have to think about that.

Conveniences and comfort:

Very comfortable and I finally got my sun visors that extend. That’s a pet peeve of mine since nothing irritates me more than moving the visor to the side window and it only covers half of the blinding glare. Overall the Regal has a perfect array of standard features.

Consumer Recommendation:

This is a tough one to pick out the best since the field is very competitive but as for me, I gotta tell you the Cadillac CTS remains one of my all time favorite cars in today’s world. GM looks good in this battle.

Recognized Competition:

Buick Regal $35,000, Acura TSX $30,000, Audi A4 $33,000, BMW 3 Series $35,000, Cadillac CTS $36,000, Chrysler 200 $27,000, Honda Accord $24,000, Hyundai Sonata $26,000, Infiniti G Sedan $33,000, Lexus ES 350 $37,000, Lexus IS $34,000, Lincoln MKZ $35,000, Mazda 6 $19,000, Mercedes C-Class $35,000, Nissan Maxima $32,000, Subaru Legacy $25,000, Toyota Camry $30,000, Volkswagon Jetta $23,000, Volvo S60 $31,000.

Good News:

Fair fuel economy coupled with great styling luxury packed sedan priced well.

Bad News:

Nothing I can put my finger on, but the shifting mechanism could be a bit tighter. When you test drive it, you’ll see what I mean. And finally, although fuel economy is fair, when gas prices go to $8.00 a gallon you’ll be looking for something that gets 40-50 mpg.

Standard Equipment:

2.0 Liter Turbo Ecotec 4-cylinder 182 horsepower engine, 6-speed manual transmission, ONStar with turn by turn navigation, 4-wheel ABS disc brakes with Brembo front brakes, stability and traction controls, front, side and head curtain and airbag sensing system, rear seat mounted airbags, daytime running lights, LATCH system with rear child lock security, tire pressure monitoring, 19” allow wheels, power heated mirrors with turn signals, 2 – 12 V outlets, 1 – 120 volt outlet, 8-way power driver and passenger heated seats with 4-way power lumbar, dual zone climate control, Bluetooth, cruise control, leather wrapped steering wheel, remote entry with push button start, power windows & locks, 60/40 split folding rear seat, tilt and telescopic steering column, stereo 9 speaker audio with CD/XM, USB port.
