2013 Dodge Grand Caravan Crew (974)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan Crew. With the advent of consumers beating a path to buy SUV models the original high capacity vans have been a quiet competitor. I believe the reason is because of the “Off Road” capability of the SUV. But the very high profile necessary for the SUV to go off road makes it far less convenient when it comes to getting in and out of, and that is a real negative for intended cargo – people. Old and young alike need a ladder to get into or out of an SUV.

I suspect that is why “Soccer Mom’s” gravitate more to the Minivan, and wisely so. It is the man of the house, who leans to an SUV. Why… because it is a Macho Man Thing. He wants the capability of going off road, BUT in fact less than 5% will ever get off road. Mom – stand tough and tell the ‘old man’ you want convenience not appearance for daddy to puff up his chest showing he can go anywhere in that bad boy SUV. Clearly from the stats it ain’t happening daddy and it won’t likely ever be needed as a battle ready off road machine. You know that, so man up and agree with mom that convenience in getting the little ones in car seats, or walking age kids able to step up into the Van profile, is more important.

General Information:

It is assembled in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Classification is Minivan.

Cars from Dodge:

Avenger, Caliber, Challenger, Charger, Dart, Durango, Grand Caravan, Journey, Nitro & Viper.

Opinion and Observation:

I’m guessing you have wondered how safe it is to drive vs flying. Flying is the safest mode of transportation when you look at the statistics.

1.     In the US, each year there are about 40,000 deaths per year in automobile accidents vs. about 200 in air transport.

2.     Fatality rates per passenger mile traveled is illuminating in that each year in the US 1 out of 6800 drivers dies in an auto accident. The rate for airline passengers is 1 in 1.6 million.

Automotive Innovation:

History of Auto innovation: 1885 – first patent for seat belts; 1890 – Canadian Thomas Ahearn invented the first electric car heater; 1901 – invention of disc brakes by British inventor Frederick William Lanchester; 1920 – Power steering invented by Francis Davis.

Handling & Performance:

This minivan is powerful and responsive. Its low center of gravity gives it good road-ability to compensate for the softer ride for comfort that prevents it from being a “road racer”. Although I have to say, I’ve been on a race track with a race driver at the wheel of a Minivan who made me a believer that a van is able. But it is designed for kids on board that changes the performance requirements.

Styling:

Nice looking without much change over the years. Attempts have been made at being different, but it is clear to me it is difficult to improve on the basic design. The good news here is that it is not likely to go out of style and thus a good investment. However, many improvements have improved on original designs. Sliding and particularly power sliding side doors and rear lift gate are the most useful additions to the convenience of the van.

Entertainment systems and communications systems and other electronic devices like cell phone connection have helped occupy the kids from inevitable boredom for the ride. Let’s face it, that is one place where game boys can be used to help mom or dad concentrate on driving instead of bored kids.

Remember when a car trip conversation included, “are we there yet?” or “Don’t make me stop this car!”, etc.?

Fit and Finish:

Very nice job from this survivor of the auto industry attack by Asian made products and overpaid unions. Such developments in the auto industry were wake up calls for America’s domestic products.

Cost:

Great value.

Conveniences and comfort:

This is a very comfortable 7 passenger van that is also very convenient for young and old alike.

Consumer Recommendation:

If you have a need to transport lots of young and older people this is the most practical solution. SUV’s are an option but I’ve pointed out the differences you need to consider in what the purpose of use will be.

Recognized Competition:

Dodge Grand Caravan $29,000, Chrysler Town & Country $31,000, Honda Odyssey $29,000, Kia Sedona $25,000, Nissan Quest $26,000, Toyota Sienna $27,000, VW Routan $32,000.

Good News:

Powerful, great utility, comfortable, 7-seater.

Bad News:

Cruise was imprecise with 4-5 mph change in speed before adjusting to preset speed.

Standard Equipment:

3.6 liter V6 variable valve timing 283 HP engine, 6-speed auto transmission, front side and side curtain airbags all rows with driver knee airbag, LATCH child anchors, 4-wheel ABS power disc brakes, stability control, side power sliding doors, power adjustable pedals, tire pressure monitor, cruise control, keyless entry with immobilizer, power door locks, rear window washer wiper, second row bucket seats with fold in the floor seats, 8-way power driver seatpower second row windows, power quarter vented windows, Uconnect, audio with CD, MP3, Sirius XM satellite radio with 1-year subscription, leather wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, tilt and telescoping steering column.

2013 Subaru BRZ 2-door Sports Car. (973)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2013 Subaru BRZ Premium Manual 2-door Sports Car and you are gonna love this car. It is, in my opinion, among the best looking in this class and really well priced.

Subaru developed the rear-wheel drive BRZ with the fundamentals of sports car design in mind: low vehicle weight, an ultra-low center of gravity and precision steering. Utilizing Subaru’s new naturally aspirated 200 horsepower horizontally opposed (BOXER) engine design, the BRZ is a sports car that does not sacrifice everyday comfort and practicality, including up to estimated 34 mpg highway fuel economy. It has 2+2 seating and a folding rear seat to provide sufficient cargo space for four race tires and tools to track days.

General Information:

It is assembled in Gunma, Japan. Classification is Sport Car. Cars from Subaru: BRZ, Forester, Impreza, Impreza WRX, Legacy, Outback, Tribeca and XV Crosstrek.

Opinion and Observations:

1.     Every diamond lane should be available to all traffic during off peak hour travel just like Northern California where the lane is open to enter and exit anywhere along the route. Southern California does not allow that ease of use and worse yet they can tax you if you go over the double lines even in off hours with fines of $4-500.00. Now that is Criminal.

2.     Who were the idiots who thought up FAST TRAK on the 110 freeway? And who were the idiots who let them do it? Enter corruption from Detroit, Chicago and the east coast states where toll roads are a way of life. California has now begun to slip into the toilet. I hope no one uses the damn things including the toll roads in Orange county and elsewhere. Isn’t it bad enough we pay the highest gas prices nationally and the tax is a huge percentage of the total. In California for example state tax is about $.40 and the Fed’s impose $.18. And on top of that I have to pay tolls to use the roads I’ve already paid for. That is BS. Next election change your vote to a name you don’t recognize since the ones you recognize spend the most advertising dollars and are crooked to begin with.

3.     Finally – a reminder that you slow down because those government tax collectors (they call themselves California Highway Patrol – more like predators) are out in force raking in the money for corrupt California politicians.

Handling & Performance:

Very good fuel economy while being a lot of fun to drive. Not all manual transmissions are as easy and intuitive to shift. And the power is good enough to skip gears 1st to 3 rd to 5 th gear makes around town driving easy. Seldom do you have to go through all 6 gears. Rear wheel drive.

Styling:

I thought the speedometer design was odd in that the most common speed on the display is not where it is easily readable. It would appear it was done that way for racing which you won’t be doing much of on the highways in most countries or states. And that led to them providing a digital display of current speed where it can be seen more easily without your eyes having to travel too far off the road.

Fit and Finish:

Very good.

Cost:

Extremely well priced in class.

Conveniences and comfort:

I felt the seat belt could not be adjusted to avoid the uncomfortable feeling on my neck.

Consumer Recommendation:

This is a sport car that is worth your consideration for only $26,000.

Recognized Competition:

Subaru BRZ $25,000, Audi TT $39,000, BMW 1 Series $31,000, Ford Mustang $31,000, Hyundai Genesis coupe $24,000, Hyundai Veloster $18,000, MINI Cooper $32,000, Nissan Z $32,000, VW Golf $18,000, Scion FR-S $25,000, VW GTI $24,000, Volvo C30 $26,000.

Good News:

Priced well in class, nice looking, good fuel economy and fun to drive, stability control, traction control with on/off setting for track driving, 4-wheel ABS brake assist disc brakes, fold down rear seats, leather wrapped tilt and telescoping steering wheel with red stitching, power assist steering, navigation with voice control and 6” LCD screen, stereo with HD radio & XM Satellite, CD player in dash, 8 speakers, Bluetooth hands free phone with audio streaming, iTunes tagging capability, USB port, SMS text messaging.

Bad News:

Seat belt adjustment, speedometer small and odd presentation. Difficult entry / exit.

Standard Equipment:

2.0 liter 200 horsepower horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine, 6-speed manual transmission,

2013 Volvo S60T6 AWD R (972)

Overview:
This week we’re looking at the 2013 Volvo S60T6 AWD R. I had not been in a Volvo since 2006. I’m sorry for that because I try so hard to look at all the cars but there are more cars than there are weeks available.

Volvo has always presented the image of quality and safety and that is a popular correct need for today’s consumers. Growing up in the 50s, 60s and 70s it was enough that the car had 4 wheels and an engine that actually ran. A little bailing wire and chewing gum would keep it together and then along came Duct Tape to replace the bailing wire and chewing gum.

The first thing I noticed is that it was BLUE and I mean BLUE… bright and although it would not be the color I would select I’m guessing marketing thought otherwise. And it is reminiscent of the blue in the Swedish flag. Perhaps that’s what inspired the color for this S60. Looks great on the flag, I must admit.

General Information:

It is assembled in Ghent, Belgium. Classification is Compact. Cars from Volvo: C-30, C70, S40, S-60, S-80, V50, XC-60, XC-70 & XC-90.

Opinion and Observations:

Would someone explain why indentations were made in the surface of the highway as dividing markers… thump, thump, thump…. Ok, so it’s good to have a reminder that you are crossing over the line to change lanes. Sometimes folks drift and it is a good reminder you are going astray.

However the idiot’s who thought up the idea of carving those immovable indentations should be fired. Stupid is, stupid does. Why, because CalTrams failed to think ahead at the obvious since they are constantly changing the placement of the lanes and therefore those indentations ground out of the cement are a nuisance to millions of drivers when those indentations end up in lanes when the original lanes are moved.

Only government can be so stupid. Private industry must not make such mistakes since it cost the company … unaccountable government spends YOUR money and so they don’t give a damn. Shame on them.

Handling & Performance:

Great ride. I tested this Blue Volvo in the state of Oregon, with snow, sleet and rain which is so common to the Pacific Northwest. The all wheel drive feature gave me and my wife a great deal of comfort in such conditions. It is a powerful sedan and seats 4 large adults comfortably.

If you are impressed with quick passing speed on the highway, you’ll love this turbo charged 325 horsepower 6-cylinder engines performance. Impressively and effortlessly smooth.

Styling:

Distinctively Volvo. Unmistakable in a world of “generic” designs that are all too common.

Fit and Finish:

Very good.

Cost:

MSRP of $43,900 is priced at what I expected.

Conveniences and comfort:

There is a ton of great features for today’s needs… or at least wants . . . ok it’s not a ton but you know what I mean. Volvo is typically a comfortable car and this S 60 was no exception. It is a super comfortable car which is most notable on long drives and our travel around Oregon was long enough to notice there was an absence of even thinking whether or not you were comfortable.

Consumer Recommendation:

This Volvo is in good company and among some other great cars. That means your job of deciding which is the best choice for you and where to spend your transportation dollars will be challenging. Volvo has a long history and also is a company that emphasizes safety and that will resonate in a huge way with young families looking for the safest car in today’s world. Volvo has a near cult following in the area of safety and that gives the Volvo an edge in this market. Ask the crash dummy.

Recognized Competition:

Volvo S60 $43,000, Acura RL $48,000, Acura TL $36,000, Audi A4 $33,000, BMW 335i $45,000, Buick Regal $33,000, Cadillac ATS $48,000, Cadillac CTS $50,000, Chrysler 300 $36,000, Hyundai Azera $32,000, Infiniti G Sedan $39,000, Lexus ES 350  $36,000, Lexus GS 350 AWD $50,000, Lincoln MKS $45,000, Mercedes Benz C-Class $39,000, Nissan Maxima SV $36,000, Volkswagen CC $42,000, Volkswagen Passat SEL $34,000.

Good News:

Long history for safety, fast turbo, super comfortable in class and great safety and driving assist features.

Bad News:

None noted

Standard Equipment:

3.0 liter 325 HP turbo charged 6-cylinder engine, CTV – continuous variable valve timing, 6-speed auto trans, all wheel drive, dynamic stability control, with corner traction control, speed sensitive steering, ventilated 4-wheel disc brakes with electronic brake distribution and assist, 18” alloy wheels, leather seating, with aluminum inlay and sport pedals, front side and side curtain airbags, adjustable steering wheel, LATCH system, driver information system, security system with back up battery for siren, tire pressure monitoring, foglights, power glass moon roof, 7” color monitor, power seats, keyless entry and push button start/stop, power heated mirrors, Bluetooth hands free phone, climate control, 60/40 split folding rear seat, tilt steering column, audio with CD, MP3, HD Radio, USB and AUX inputs, Sirius satellite radio.

2013 Hyundai Sonata GLS (969)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2013 Hyundai Sonata GLS that like its siblings has sweeping artistic lines that are clean and aerodynamic. Seating is roomy with ‘sofa-like’ comfort. Instruments are crystal clear.

This is perhaps the most popular and talked about and newest of cars from South Korea. Economically speaking this is the proper way to re-distribute world wealth. They make money the old fashioned way —- they earn it. No one is forcing us to buy their products but for the quality and economical operation built in we do buy in large numbers. Thanks Hyundai.

General Information: Parts from the US / Canada 41%; Korea 58%. It is assembled in Montgomery, Alabama, Classification is Large cars. Cars from Hyundai: Accent, Azera, Elantra, Elantra Touring, Equus, Genesis, Genesis Coupe, Santa Fe, Sonata, Sonata Hybrid, Tucson, Veloster, Veracruz.

Handling & Performance:

Active ECO when turned on gives you different power characteristics to allow you to change the driving style to increase fuel economy by approximately 10%.

Styling:

All Hyundai models to my eye are nice looking that mimic German and Japanese offerings hugely less expensive.

Fit and Finish:

Very good.

Cost:

You’ve gotta be impressed with the great value on this lineup of competition. For me the Hyundai brand is very aggressive in grabbing their share of the market. Look closely at this option and you will notice a growing number on the highway. It used to be the Japanese dominated market growth but there is another Sheriff in town.

Conveniences and comfort:

Outstanding.

Consumer Recommendation:

The competition is tight good options for 5 passenger large sedans. It makes the process longer but interesting. And it can be fun paring the search to the one that fits your budget. But if you print your own money I like the Hyundai Equus for about $65,000.

Recognized Competition:

Hyundai Sonata $21,000, Acura TSX $31,000, Buick LaCross $32,000, Buick Regal $29,000, Chevrolet Impala $26,000, Chevrolet Malibu $19,000, Chrysler 200 $19,000, Dodge Avenger $19,000, Dodge Charger $26,000, Ford Fusion $22,000, Kia Optima $21,000, Mazda 6 $21,000, Nissan Altima $22,000, Nissan Maxima $33,000, Subaru Legacy $20,000, Suzuki Kizashi $19,000, Toyota Camry $22,000, Volkswagen Jetta $18,000, Volkswagen Passat $21,000.

Good News:

Great styling, decent fuel economy for a powerful luxury car, lots of great features and options available, it is priced very well and is a comfortable ride that looks elegant.

Bad News:

Noticeably absent

Standard Equipment:

2.4 liter GDI (gas direct injection) 190 horsepower 4-cylinder engine, dual continuous variable valve timing, active ECO system, 6-speed automatic transmission, electronic stability control, traction control, 4-wheel ABS (anti-lock) power disc brakes with brake force distribution, front side and side curtain airbags, tire pressure monitor, 16” alloy wheels, remote keyless entry with alarm, power windows and locks, heated mirrors, cloth seating, 60/40 split folding rear seat, tilt and telescopic steering wheel with cruise, audio and phone controls, air conditioning, audio with XM,CD,MP3 with iPod/ USB and Aux input jacks, Bluetooth hands free phone and trip computer.

2011 GMC Terrain AWD SLT-2

2011 GMC Terrain AWD SLT-2

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2011 GMC Terrain AWD SLT-2.  GM replaced the Envoy (2002-2009) with the Terrain. And before it was called an Envoy it was called a Jimmy. Owners I talk with consider the GMC line as tough well made no nonsense trucks and SUVs. I’ve always been a Chevy man and although I’ve owned many brands over the years GM cars have been my favorites. After many Cadillac’s in my driveway I fell in love with the newer models and particularly the CTS V lights my fire. It is not only beautifully stylish with sharp character lines, it is fast and wildly fun to drive.

It is time again for Americans to return to cars made in this country. Economic times have shipped steel production and too much oil supply to off shore countries. That was fine when our economy was strong, but that is behind us so going forward consumers should get back on the team and buy “Made in USA” products.

There was a time when Japan knew how important the name USA was and to improve their product sales they named a city in Japan Usa so they could say their products were made there. Now made in Japan carries weight of its own and they don’t need to apologize any longer. China is now accepted by Wal-Mart shoppers but I find more discerning consumers demanding US made quality products when money is not as much a part of the decision making process.

Opinion:

It would appear GM is back. They’ve trimmed down a bit and hopefully they have dumped the losers in product lines to be profitable again. It just goes to show you that big or more is not necessarily better. The temptation to grow larger is natural to men generally. Perhaps it is the need to diversify and be secure in our endeavors. I suspect it is just too much to ask of mortal man to know when enough is enough. Or is it ok to have high and lofty goals like putting a man on the moon.

That reminds me of what a women said she was curious to know why it is that “if they can put a man on the moon, why can’t they put them all there”.

As we have watched the auto industry grow it began with a good idea and one car turned into hundreds today. And just like GM, Chrysler and Ford new car companies have followed the same pattern of a growing number of models. If it didn’t make good business by boosting sales car makers wouldn’t do it. More is good when there is growth in the economy, but that leads to top heavy cost. That growth based expense when faced with a rapidly declining market car companies were all in danger of going under.

Ultimately it is the consumer who decides if GM or any company is worthy. It is interesting to note here that Ford has never done better following the failure of Detroit generally. In my search for answers I found people were praising Ford for not taking bail out money. That was the defining moment that people would remember when it came time to buy a car. They offered a hand to lift Ford up first. And I think the mood of the country is to return to buying American products which will lead to more sales of GM and Chrysler as well.

The real message here, for me, is that down deep inside we all recognize the need to stand for right for the sake of right and we appreciate those who lead us back to moral and ethical values that make society work. That is what will bring us back to full employment. The goal is 4%. Think 4%.

Handling & Performance:

As you likely know, all SUV’s are built on truck platforms. But they don’t handle like trucks and the features and suspension make the ride more and more car like. SUVs are also leaning to even lower profiles to improve handling even more. Therefore they are tagged ‘Crossovers’ more often even though SUV is still the most common designator.

The desire for an off road vehicle is nearly a faint memory now, because only 5% of these highly capable truck adaptations ever get “Off Road” anyway. The closer to the ground stance makes them handle better but of course you give up road clearance that makes it truly equipped for ‘real’ off road-ing use. Consumers know they have other choices if they are a part of the 5% who have a passion for driving roads less travelled.

Styling:

Design is distinctively GMC truck with a more square look. My recent review of the Audi counterpart to this Terrain has more rounded and softer lines. That reminds me of the round look of the late 50s and 60s and how that trend passed away. Square is not as aerodynamic but at freeway speeds approaching 30 mph on an average day, wind resistance is rarely a factor in fuel economy.

Fit and Finish:

Very good.

Cost:

GMC is aggressively priced. I did like the Audi, but I don’t see a $10,000 price spread in quality of the two brands.

Conveniences and comfort:

Outstanding. Very little difference from the more expensive competition.

Consumer Recommendation:

Be sure to include this GMC in your comparison shopping test drives. It will make you think twice before sending your hard earned money to Germany or Japan. Even the Korean entrant makes this GMC look all the better.

Another thing that will work in favor of GMC is that fuel economy is good compared to other AWD competitors.

Recognized Competition (MSRP):

GMC Terrain $24,250, Acura RDX $32,620, Audi Q5 $35,200, BMW X3 $38,850, Cadillac SRX $34,430, Chevrolet Equinox $22,745, Dodge Journey $22,245, Dodge Nitro $22,245, Ford Escape $21,215, Honda Accord Crosstour $29,790, Honda CR-V $21,695, Honda Element $20,825, Hyundai Veracruz $28,345, Infiniti EX $34,550, Land Rover LR2 $35,500, Lexus RX 350 $38,375,  Lincoln MKX $39,375, Mazda CX-7 $21,990, Mercedes-Benz GLK $35,500, Mitsubishi Outlander $21,995, Nissan Murano $28,520, Nissan Rogue $20,830, Suzuki Grand Vitara $19,199, Toyota Highlander $27,540, Toyota RAV4 $22,025, Volvo XC 60 $32,400.

Good News:

Solid ride, well appointed and well equipped and priced right to aggressively go after foreign brand models.

Bad News:

This class vehicle is necessarily thirsty for fuel. The real bad news is that the price is heading north of $5 per gallon in the US.

Standard Equipment:

2.4 liter 182 horsepower 4-cylinder engine, 6-speed auto trans, 4-wheel abs disc brakes, stability control, traction control, tire pressure monitor, front side and side curtain airbags, LATCH system with safety locks, remote keyless entry, auto headlights, remote start, theft deterrent, OnStar with crash response and turn-by-turn navigation, rear parking assist, deep tinted glass, power liftgate, 18” aluminum wheels, fog lights, roof rack side rails, rearview camera, sunroof, leather heated bucket seats, leather wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, 8-way power driver seat with memory on seat and mirrors, 60/40 split reclining rear seat, climate control, tilt & telescopic column, cruise control, power windows & locks, stereo with CD & USB port and pioneer 8 speaker system, XM Satellite radio, compass and Bluetooth.

2011 Chevrolet Volt (880)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2011 Chevrolet Volt from the eyes of one of my publishers, Vincent Bodiford. Together we have owned newspapers in Colorado and Texas and now he publishes several papers in California.

Herewith is Vince’s take on the new Volt.

The 2011 Chevrolet Volt is a true long-range electric car. When Chevrolet was founded 100-years ago, cars were fueled by diesel, gasoline, steam and electric power. Gasoline eventually beat out all other fuels, but today the electric car is making a comeback.

Electricity reappeared at first in our modern hybrids – then pure-electric short-range cars. Chevrolet has bridged the endurance gap with the game-changing Volt, which runs entirely on battery-supplied electricity. When the battery runs down, a small gasoline engine starts and turns a generator, making all the electricity needed to run the motors and the systems. It’s a brilliant automotive execution of a the very same thing that makes railroad locomotives move – diesel engines turn generators to make electricity that turns the electric motors.

Solid as a freight-train and as luxurious as European sedan, the 2011 Chevrolet Volt has establishing an entirely new segment of long-range all-electric cars. The five-door, four-passenger Volt is not a hybrid – it’s a one-of-a-kind, all-electrically driven car with a range of up to 379 miles.

Handling & Performance:

The Chevrolet Volt is powered by the Voltec propulsion system, which is a 16-kWh lithium-ion battery pack and electric drive unit that provide pure electric range between 25 and 50 miles, depending on terrain, driving techniques and temperature. The 1.4L gasoline-powered engine extends the range up to an additional 344 miles on a full tank of fuel. Driving the Volt on our Freeways, we averaged about 40 miles battery range, and well over 100-mpg blended fuel economy (it sipped just 7-gallons of fuel in a week).

Driving the Volt proves electric driving can be spirited. Even though it’s a bit heavy, it easily reaches a top speed of 100-mph. At low speeds, the electric drive unit’s excellent low speed torque of 273 lb.-ft. takes it from zero-to-60 in less than 9-seconds and the quarter mile in less than 17-seconds.

Charging the Volt’s battery is simple, and can be done through 120V conventional household electrical outlet, or through a dedicated 240V charging station. The car is rechargeable in about four hours using a 240V outlet. It’s compatible with Charge-Point, and it can be charged for free at over 75 Chevrolet dealers in California.

Styling:

Futuristic in styling and technology, the Volt is bold and sleek, the performance-oriented stance conveys its electrically driven capabilities, and it looks like an upscale, midsize sport sedan. When you look at this car, it’s very technical and refined in its execution, with lots of interrelating surfaces that bring clean, crisp edges and creases.

Inside, the Volt offers the space, comfort, convenience and safety features that you expect in a premium five-door sedan – including storage compartments and 40/40 rear-folding seats. The Volt seems to express a new era of Chevrolet, with a cabin that is striking and innovative, including a front and rear dual cockpit design.

Fit and Finish:

Cost:

Pricing starts at $32,780. which takes into account a $7,500. tax credit. Our fully-equipped test car was priced at $43,390., which included $2,390. in options, including premium trim package.

Conveniences and comfort:

There is much more technology inside the Volt than its electric propulsion system. It contains virtually every modern high-tech innovation – including high-res displays, and the ability to monitor and control vehicle functions remotely. It’s packed with GPS Navigation, Bose XM-premium sound, OnStar, Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, and OnStar’s Mylink mobile app, that lets you engage with the Volt functions using a smart phone.

Consumer Recommendation:

Volt’s warranty is comprehensive but not easy to understand – including 3-year/36-K miles bumper-to-bumper, 5-year/100-K miles gasoline powertrain and roadside assistance, 8-years/100-K miles battery warranty, and 6-year corrosion protection.

Recognized Competition:

Chevrolet Volt $40,000, Chevrolet Malibu Hyrbid n/a, Ford Fusion Hybrid $29,000, Honda Civic Hybrid $24,000, Honda Insight $18,000, Infiniti M Hybrid $54,000, Lexus CT 200h $29,000, Nissan Altima Hybrid $27,000, Nissan LEAF $33,000, Toyota Camry Hybrid $27,000.

Good News:

Even though it is technically a hybrid with a gas engine it really is all electric propulsion and fuel economy is about 90 mpg., as opposed to a hybrid that gets more like 40 mpg. However the difference in cost of the Volt will require over 10 years to break even as compared to a Hyrbid that gets about 40 mpg.

Bad News:

There are limited recharging sites but like anything, users will find out where all are. The cost is high, but there is a tax credit available that reduces the differential or added cost of the Hybrid competition.

Standard Equipment:

2011 Kia Sportage EX AWD

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2011 Kia Sportage EX AWD crossover / SUV. Here is yet another Korean made SUV that has been earning its place in the US market. I recommended a Kia Sorento for my daughter Jen and it has served her well in toting the kids to and fro with school and sports. Price is what moved her to a Korean car and I haven’t been sorry I pushed her in that direction. Simply put she got more for her money. Secondly and equally important the economy has dictated much of what we do to save money.

Guess what… every time you buy a foreign made car or a US car that is made in a foreign country you are “OUTSOURCING”. Dirty word. Not at all. You do it because you must. You support other economies because they don’t have unions. We do in America and they have outlived their usefulness in ‘today’s world’.

As to this Kia – The price is right and the product has stood the test of time now for long enough now to give us confidence that it is here to stay.

Handling & Performance:

These newer SUVs are lower to the ground and although they are not as well suited to off road use they are better on the highways. But this Sportage sports AWD – All Wheel Drive – which gives it sure footing in all road conditions. A short turning radius and smaller size makes it agile and well suited to zipping around town and easier when it comes to parking. The 176 horse engine is perfect for this size car with average to good fuel consumption.

Styling:

The Sportage is new for 2011 with a modern, clean design that features a high beltline, sweeping angles and more pronounced wheel flares than its predecessor. The second-generation Sportage debuted as a 2005 model with a sportier and more elegant design than its more rugged predecessor and more interior room due to a longer wheelbase and wider stance. The Sportage was first introduced in 1995 and in 1997 Sportage adopted the automobile industry’s first knee airbag to augment its high level of standard equipment. For the 1999 model year, Kia added a 2-door Sportage convertible with a removable soft-top over the rear seat area with a fixed hardtop over the front seat area.

Fit and Finish:
Very good.

Cost:
As expected Korea has come to play and are slightly more price competitive. But it is slight and the competition is fierce with only two US products – Chevrolet and Jeep.

Consumer Recommendation:
Unless you intend to do a lot of off roading this Kia fits in well with the competition. Jeep remains the only option here in class for off road use. I had done a lot of off road stuff with Jeep and remain impressed with the performance in that venue. The liberty therefore would have an edge over the rest of the field for me.

Conveniences and comfort:
I like most of us, love gadgets and gizmos. But they are not only fun they are functional and help us to enjoy the driving experience. One such new feature on the scene these days is ‘voice activated’ control. You know how many Nav systems require you are stopped to input a destination? Well enter ‘voice activation’ and wa-la you just tell it where you want to go and it will make that happen at full speed. This is really cool. Then if you want to change the radio station you can do the same thing. You push a button on the steering wheel and the system asks for a command and you tell it what you want to do.

Recognized Competition:
Kia Sportage $18-25,000, Chevrolet Equinox $23-30,000, Ford Escape $21-27,000, Honda CR-V $22-30,000, Hyundai Tucson $19-26,000, Jeep Liberty $23-28,000, Mazda Tribute $20-29,000, Mitsubishi Outlander $21-29,000, Nissan JUKE $19-25,000, Nissan Rogue $21-26,000, Subaru Forester $20-28,000, Suzuki Grand Vitara $19-27,000, Toyota RAV4 $22-28,000.

Good News:
Competitive, great around town car, good fuel economy.

Bad News:
None.

Standard Equipment:
2.4 liter inline 4 cylinder 176 hp engine, 6-speed auto trans, power steering, power 4-wheel ABS disc brakes, all wheel drive, front and side curtain airbags, traction control, stability control, up & downhill brake assist, rollover protection system, tire pressure monitoring, LATCH system (child safety), dual zone climate control, power windows and locks, power mirrors, keyless entry, audio with CD/MP3/ 6 speakers, SIRIUS satellite radio, USB & aux audio inputs, power front seats with lumbar, 60/40 split folding rear seats, cooling glove box, cruise control with trip computer, tilt leather wrapped steering wheel with audio, cruise & Bluetooth controls, roof rails, fog lights, auto headlights and privacy and solar glass.

2011 Saab 9-5 Aero Sedan (2011)

Overview:

This week we’re looking at the 2011 Saab 9-5 Aero Sedan. As you likely know, the makers of the original Saab also built aircraft. The instrument panel on this Saab is reminiscent of the instrumentation you find in an aircraft cockpit as to look and feel. Sweet.

The 2.8-liter V6 is the same engine found in the Cadillac SRX, and comes with the new XWD all-wheel drive that is termed “Cross Wheel Drive” and is capable of sending 100% of the torque to the rear wheels or front wheels, which is a departure from prior AWD applications. The front-wheel-drive only versions are powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and will be available in the fall. The car was developed by General Motors and uses the basics of the chassis found in the Buick Regal and LaCrosse.

Opinion:

HUGE California Traffic Ticket Fines Effective 01/06/2011
California is broke and they want to collect money from you, that is nothing more than taxation. If safety were the reason for the fine increases they would have been set long ago in the interest of safety. This is clearly a move to take money from the people to save government jobs. SO, be careful and don’t give those ^%#*&@&’s the chance to rip you off. While private sector jobs are being lost government jobs are not.

I remind you –

These folks are not your friend. When you get on the highway be wary of this ‘taxation without representation’ move by the Gestapo-like police. Our public servants are beginning to look more like the enemy and we pay them twice what the average worker gets in the private sector.

Herewith, some of the fines to be coldly imposed on you:

VC 22507(B)     $1876       Violation of disabled parking provisions, second offense.
VC 22507(A)       $976       Violation of disabled parking provisions, first offense.
VC 22500            $976       Parking in a bus loading area.
VC 16028(A)     $796         Failure to provide evidence of financial responsibility (insurance)
VC 22454(A)      $616        Passing a school bus with flashing red signals.
VC 21453(A)     $436         Failure to stop at a red signal.
VC 27360            $436        Mandatory use of passenger child restraints.
VC 22350           $328         Unsafe speed, 16 to 25 miles over the limit.
VC 23123(B)      $256        Driving while using a wireless phone not hands free, each subsequent offense. VC 12814.6    $214           Failure to obey license provisions.

If you do get fined, the following information is from a company who claims you can “Beat your California traffic ticket” or your money back. www.ticketbust.com or call 800-850-8038. If you have used them please share your experience – my email joe@atthewheel.com.

More information at http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=947063

Handling & Performance:

The all wheel drive system has a new twist and thus they term it the XWD system, which is a fully-automatic, on-demand system that is capable of sending up to 100 percent of the engine torque to the front or the rear wheels whenever it is required. Of course it is totally transparent to the driver and no intervention is needed to take advantage of this feature.

Styling:

“Nice looking car”! I hear comments like that on occasion and did with this Saab. I agree. It has the best design lines ever for Saab.

Fit and Finish:
Excellent.

Cost:

The Saab costs much more than the average price of others in the midsize class but is far less than most other luxury cars I see as comparable.

Conveniences and comfort:

The Electronic Parking Brake is the way Saab has chosen to apply the parking brake and it is found on other expensive cars. I can live without that kind of feature. It reminds me of a radio with a button instead of a dial. They both do the same thing but one is simple the other is a malfunction waiting to happen. I fail to see the purpose since I feel if it isn’t broken why fix it?

Leave your key fob in your pocket or purse except to open the doors or trunk. I prefer being able to leave the key in my pocket all the time.

Another handy feature is the parking assist and also a new adaptation that sounds a bell when you drift close to your lane divider lines. Of course you can see where all these features are leading us. It is like we’re given small pieces of the puzzle and one day the cruise sensors will allow the car to drive you down the road all by itself and instead of sounding a bell the computer will simply correct the drift to the side or get too close to the car in front of you. All of this at 70 mph. Great stuff.

However, some will tell you that by the time that happens, someone else will develop a ‘Transporter’ and Scotty will beam you up, and we will no longer need cars, oil drilling or crashes and car insurance.

Consumer Recommendation:

If this group is in your price range Saab is worth including in your search and I think you’ll agree it is really worth your consideration.

Recognized Competition:

Saab 9-5 Aero $39-50,000, Acura TL $35-44,000, Audi A6 $45-59,000, BMW 5-Series $45-62,000, Cadillac CTS $35-62,000, Chrysler 300 $27-45,000, Dodge Charger $25-38,000, Hyundai Genesis $33-43,000, Infiniti M $47-60,000, Jaguar XF Series $53-80,000, Lexus GS $46-55,000, Mercedes Benz E-Class $49-88,000, Volkswagen Passat $27,915, Volvo S60 $37,700, Volvo S80 $37-41,000.

Good News:

Wonderful handling and comfortable ride, fast turbo performance.

Bad News:

Fuel economy is 4 mpg less than the average in midsize class and I was not real happy with the visibility.

Standard Equipment:

2.8 liter V6 300 horsepower turbocharged engine, 6-speed automatic transmission, XWD all wheel drive system, electronic rear limited slip differential, 4-wheel ABS disc brakes, electronic parking brake, 18” alloy wheels, electronic stability control, tire pressure monitor, keyless entry with start/stop button, tilt column and leather wrapped steering wheel with shift and audio controls, cooled glove box, 8-way power driver seat, power windows and locks, power heated mirrors, auto-dim rearview mirror, split folding rear seat with pass through to trunk, stereo with CD player and 9 speakers, USB port, satellite radio, headlight washers, Bluetooth for phone, heated front seats, cruise control, fog lights, rain sensing wipers, dual zone climate control, front side and side curtain airbags, rear side airbags, child security door locks and theft deterrent system.

2011 Fiat 500 Merkel

Overview:

This week we’re visiting with car aficionado Merkel Weiss and his observations of the New 2011 Fiat 500 and a sprinkling of inside information you only hear from auto industry insiders. Frequent readers of this column will recall Professor Weiss taught several of the best auto designers while at Art Center College of Design over the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

You may know that Fiat is huge in the rest of the world. I bought a shiny new 124 Spider back in 1969 and we loved it. Fiat has always provided efficient transportation across all of Europe. Under Communism and beyond into Capitalism in Poland after 1992 Fiat seemed to me to be over 50% of every car I saw on the roads from north in Gdansk on the Baltic Sea to Krakow and Bytom in the South of the country. Why, because even back then 50 mpg was common and that little car seated 4 adults. Today Poland is a thriving democracy and I suspect they are driving larger cars as well. Herewith some of the New information and expectations for Fiats re-entrance into the US market from Merkel Weiss.

Opinion:

THE FIAT 500 ENTERS THE WORLD STAGE

I attended the Fiat Gala held at a Chrysler dealership on S. Figueroa near the Los Angeles Convention Center. It was packed with the typical Los Angeles socialite crowd that usually makes me want to run away and hide. But this time was different. I visited with a few in the know friends surrounded by new, Mexican built, pre-production Fiat 500s everywhere. There were people there that actually knew about the car.

Friend Rex was able to speak with factory reps who said that, contrary to what we had
been led to understand in the automotive press, there were a few things done to the
European car to “Americanize” it, but the US version is fundamentally unchanged. We got some
new cupholders along with reinforced bumpers that add a little more to the overall length. But the good news is that although it may well sit on softer springs, this car is still very much the car we were all hoping it would be. It’s lovely.

The Fiat 500 is a completely modern little car that is about as charming and Italian as anyone could have hoped for. It was designed by Frank Stephanson (stef-an-sun), the very same guy who designed the Mini Cooper when he was at BMW. He also did some good work at Ferrari as well.

The new Fiat 500 is a nicely constructed car. The paint and panel gaps are all very
respectable and the interior is charming. Seating is good in front but rear seating is another story. Short rides would be ok back there but forget long trips. Rear head room is severely compromised.

There is no word yet on the US introduction of the diesel engine. The turbocharged engine will allegedly make its appearance in the Abarth model. There will also be a roll back roof convertible, and a 4-door wagon type, reminiscent of the old 500 Giardinera.

As I was leaving the event I ran into the head of Fiat, Sergio Marchionne. He was speaking softly to a small crowd of journalists who were taking notes on small tablets. I walked up and stood there silently when someone said: “Mr. Marchionne, what do you think of the new GM IPO?” Everyone looked confused for a second and I instinctively blurted out the price was initially $24 but is now pushing well over $30. Marchionne turned to me and I instinctively reached over to shake his hand and introduced myself. I spent a few minutes of uninterrupted conversation with this very savvy guy.

Marchionne is frank and open with his observations and has been quoted in the Italian press that he says Italian factories are underperforming, especially the Sicilian one, producing only a small fraction of the efficient production of their Polish facility. He said the Italian auto workers union needs to make some serious adjustments to their contract. He has further stated that Fiat would do way better financially without Italian plants. I’m confident he was using the Italian plant closure threat as ammunition to get his stalled labor agenda moving again. Italian politicians, clearly labor supporters, jumped down his throat claiming that he spoke as a Canadian (which he is) as opposed to an Italian.

Meanwhile, back in Germany, Volkswagen led by Engr. Dr. Ferdinand Piech, grandson of the great Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, indicated VW would like to purchase Alfa Romeo, and he would be patient in that quest. Marchionne, however, announced recently that Alfa is not for sale and in fact they will produce a whole new line of Alfas to be sold as Chryslers and some Chryslers will be sold in Europe as Lancias.

Piech’s exploits are nothing short of amazing and his conquest of Porsche was simply epic. They already own Bugatti, Lamborghini, and others, totaling some 13 companies in all. He also said he will pass Toyota in sales and be the #1 car company in the world. And VW has begun to do exactly that.

In further developments, Ferrari will offer an IPO of its own shortly. One can only imagine the feeding frenzy on that one. I don’t want to say, so much for Alfa Romeo not going to Volkswagen, because Ferdinand Piech is about as clever as clever gets. In the past, whatever he has wanted, he has eventually gotten, from small companies like Skoda to large ones like Porsche.

So there we are. Given a background of the free world economy just hanging on
with no real recovery in sight, and the Italian labor situation on the edge of major disaster, up walks a quiet Canadian Marchionne with the Fiat 500 that is met with great reviews and promise of moving Fiat into even more profitable years ahead.

Standard Equipment:

1.4 liter 16v 94 horsepower 4-cylinder engine, 6 speed manual transmission, 15” steel wheels, 4-wheel ABS disc brakes with electronic brake distribution, air conditioning, power windows & locks with keyless entry, audio with CD/MP3, front and side and side curtain airbags, traction control & stability control, 50/50 split folding rear seat, tilt steering column, two 12 v dc power outlets, rear window washer wiper / defroster, cruise control & power heated mirrors.
