2016 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk 4X4 (1141)

Overview:

This is the 2016 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk 4X4 small SUV. Happy 75th Anniversary to Jeep. The most impressive part of the Jeep product includes the memories for me that began in my Navy days. We drove the WWII Jeeps and developed a bonding that has lasted for my life thus far. Secondly I had the great opportunity to experience a “Jeep Jamboree” when I was invited by Jeep to join them on the Mohawk Trail in Northwestern Massachusetts.

Anyone who has attended a Jamboree will attest to the amazing off road capability of Jeep. For those who don’t know what they are you can find details at the Jeep Jamboree USA website:https://jeepjamboreeusa.com/tripsregister/. When my wife and I attended the Mohawk Trail there were 26 venues in the US and there are a few more today.

Jeep® Jamborees are off-road adventure weekends that bring together the outdoors, down-to-earth people, and their Jeep 4x4s. These off-road treks have a long tradition dating back to 1953 when 4×4 pioneer Mark A. Smith organized the first ever Jeep Jamboree and voyaged across the Sierra Nevada Mountains by way of the old Rubicon Trail. In 1954, Willys Motors — then manufacturer of Jeep vehicles — became involved with the adventure, and Jeep Jamborees have been an off-road tradition ever since.

General Information: It is assembled in Wentzville, MO, USA. Parts – US/Canadian 22%, Italy 62%   Engine & transmission – USA; Classification is Small SUV. Cars from Jeep: Cherokee, Compass, Grand Cherokee, Patriot, Renegade, Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited.

Handling & Performance:

All the Jeeps I have driven have been a credit to the brand ever since the early models of the 1940’s. I have a great confidence in their off road prowess.

Styling:

Traditional consistency for 75 years.

1141 Function over Form Steve JobsFit and Finish:

Obviously they have evolved since WWII and in fact are more luxury then they need to be. Jeep devotees don’t care all that much about how pretty they look. I believe they are more interested in Function over Form.

Cost:

Cheap – if off-road is your thing.

Conveniences and comfort:

Okay, so comfort is important, but so is getting places where other cars and trucks just can’t go.

Consumer Recommendation:

My next car will be a Jeep Wrangler to tow behind a Motorhome to visit many places in the US I have not yet seen. I know first-hand how handy they are off road as well as an ‘easy tow’ vehicle. I highly recommend attending a Jeep Jamboree if you own a Jeep. It is an experience of a lifetime. Our experience was in October 1995. There were 120 Jeep owners plus 18 of us from the press. Really fun and you meet some great folks.

2016 Kia Optima SX Limited (1135)

Overview:

This is the 2016 Kia Optima SX LTD Turbo Gas Direct Injected 4-cylinder engine. I’ve been testing all of the Hyundai and Kia Korean made cars and have yet to find any negative issues.

Back in March I tested the Kia Optima Hybrid and although they are the same car in many respects power or fuel economy seem to be the only difference. I liked the highway 39 mpg on the hybrid – 7 mpg better than the Turbo I tested this week. So if you want power and rapid acceleration on the road the Turbo will suit you more. Me, I like the added fuel economy more. I tend to have a heavy foot on the accelerator and didn’t get the best mileage as I found myself going faster than I needed.

The Swedes have a saying “Vee get too soon old’t und’t too late schmart” and I’ve found that to be way true. One regret in life has been I was always in too much of a hurry. Later I found I was more relaxed while driving and didn’t get to my destination all that much sooner than when rushing around. I couldn’t help but recall the story of the Tortoise and the Hare and wonder why I didn’t get the point of the story much earlier in life.

General Information: It is assembled in USA; Parts – US/Canadian 57%, Foreign 43%; Engine and transmission – USA; Classification is Midsize. Cars from Kia: Cadenza, Forte, Forte Koup, Forte 5, K900, Optima, Rio, Rio 5-door, Sedona, Sorento, Soul, Soul EV and Sportage.

Handling & Performance:

Very nice handling and fast. And if you can control the speed you’ll also get an average fuel economy of 25 mpg.

Styling:

Lovely car. Nice job Kia.

Fit and Finish:

Kia has not yet disappointed me with the quality of the cars they produce.

Cost:

Very well priced for such a well-equipped passenger car.

Conveniences and comfort:

Special safety conveniences I have put at the top of my list of those things you should have in any new car you invest in. The features are getting more commonplace and with a Kia you get a lot of bang for your buck.

Consumer Recommendations:

As you may recall I bought my daughter a Kia about 6 years ago and she liked it so much she traded the older one for a near new Kia. You can tell your kids, but you can’t tell them much is a saying I like to quote. But then my daughter goes and surprises me by helping her own daughter to buy one as well. Maybe that is what they mean by “Paying it Forward”.

Finally Kia and Hyundai have warranties that are among, if not, the best in the industry.

Recognized Competition:

Kia Optima SX Turbo $25,000, Honda Accord $25,000, Ford Fusion $25,000, Mazda 6 $26,000, Chevrolet Malibu $25,000, Chrysler 200 $25,000, Subaru Legacy $25,000.

Good News:

Great pricing for a great array of features both for safety and for comfort and convenience considerations, Turbo power for ease of passing and for many it will be more fun to drive.

Bad News:

Standard Equipment:

2.4 liter Turbo GDI (gas direct injection) 4-cylinder engine, 6-speed automatic transmission with active Eco system, 18” alloy wheels, ABS anti-locking brake system, front, side and full length side curtain airbags with driver knee air bag, LATCH (lower Anchor and Tether for Children) system, traction and stability control systems, stability management, hill start assist control, tire pressure monitor, climate control, Harman Kardon surround sound, Navigation system with 8” rear camera display, SiriusXM satellite radio, power adjustable driver and front passenger seat, heated and ventilated front leather seats, push button start with smart key and smart trunk, front collision warning system, blind spot detection system, rear cross traffic alert, rear parking assist system, lane departure warning system, autonomous emergency breaking system, smart cruise control, surround view monitor and panoramic sunroof.

2016 GMC Canyon 4WD SLE Crew Long Box (1140)

Overview:

This is the 2016 GMC Canyon 4WD SLE Crew Long Box. This truck grew on me because they are useful, especially around the ranch. Ever notice when you have a truck people know and when they need to move something they call you.

I have a Ford F350 but I continue to expect the other shoe to fall as it breaks down yet again. It seems they are notorious for sensors to fail and that means you get stranded whenever it decides to shut you down. Very annoying.

The problem is that technology has gone amuck. Computer technology can be a detriment as well as a help. Computers watch for signals that something is wrong and even if there isn’t anything wrong they override human intervention. The fact there may be nothing wrong doesn’t allow the driver to make that decision. I suspect that in most cases that is true so we’re stuck with them. Oh, for the good old days when everything was simpler. A notice flashes on the dash – “Pull over to the side of the road and turn off the engine” or some such command from the computer. If you are in a good spot you can indeed pull to the side of the road before the whole system shuts down. If not you will have to negotiate with No brakes. Woops.

If you have similar stories about GM products, particularly GMC trucks I’d appreciate hearing about them.

General Information: It is assembled in Wentzville, MO, USA. Parts – US/Canadian 61%, Thailand 15%   Engine – Thailand, transmission – USA; Classification is Midsize Pickup. Cars from GMC: Acadia, Acadia Limited, Canyon, Savana Cargo, Cutaway and Passenger, Sierra 1500, 1500 Denali, Sierra 2500 Denali HD, 2500 HD, Sierra 3500, 3500 Chassis Cab, Denali HD, Terrain, Yukon and Yukon XL.

Handling & Performance:

I tested the Turbo Diesel option on this test vehicle and it performed wonderfully.  If you are a Diesel fan, which I am, you may want to consider that option instead of the Gas V6 priced out here. That option will increase the Standard Vehicle Price by $3,700 for a 2.8 liter 4-cylinder Duramax Turbo Diesel engine.

As noted below, if you want all the options you’ll fork over about $44,000.

Styling:

Looks sometimes are more important than the real purpose of a truck, and the trend for most trucks these days is they are built to be more car-like than a truck needs to be. The consumer however is the driving force and I suspect most want a truck for more than just work. Great looking and great features win out most of the time but you’ll notice good looks come with a higher price tag.

Fit and Finish:

Very good.

Cost:

Most trucks, these days, are pricy as they become more luxury than work horses.

Conveniences and comfort:

Running boards or side steps are available but I found them to be more of a nuisance than a help. Not so on my Ford F350 that is much taller and a small step ladder would otherwise be needed if the side steps were not there. For me, on this lower to the ground, GMC Canyon they were unnecessary so be sure to check that feature out and you may find them unnecessary as well.

Consumer Recommendation:

There are many variations on the theme of building your dream truck but you’ll find the process of finding the right mix of features is very frustrating. Add one feature and it wipes out others you had already selected. You need a dealer to do it right.

Recognized Competition:

GMC Canyon $35,000, Nissan Frontier $34,000, Toyota Tacoma $33,000.

Good News:

Good looking, there are many options so you can build it pretty much as you like, want or need it to be. It’s a Jimmy and that will mean a lot to many.

Bad News:

I found that building to my own specifications was a frustrating if not impossible process.

Standard Equipment:

3.6 liter 305 hp V6 engine, 6-speed automatic transmission, electric 2-speed transfer case, remote keyless entry, front, side and side curtain front and rear airbags, theft deterrent system immobilization, stability control, traction control, 4-wheel ABS disc brakes, rear vision camera, locking tailgate, rear bumper corner step, power mirrors / manual fold, 17” silver metalic cast aluminum wheels, fog lights, front recovery hooks, driver 4-way power seat, rear folding bench seat, power windows, rear window defroster, cruise control, leather wrapped steering wheel, multi color display, steering wheel controls, audio system with 8” color touch screenwith Intellegent Apple carplay capability, XM radio 9subscription sold separately), 4 USB ports, ONStar with 5 year plan, 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot with limited data trial period.

2016 Nissan Rogue SV FWD SUV (1139)

Overview:

This is the 2016 Nissan Rogue SV FWD SUV. Up until recently the Rogue was built in Japan. Now it is built in Smyrna, TN where Nissan has cranked out more than 10 million vehicles. That is really smart of Nissan because America is the biggest market for them and American’s like to see off-shore companies employ workers here. But another reason for them to do more here is that, believe it or not, Japan is more expensive than the US.

Nissan divide and hide cargo is really slick and very cars today are as innovative. This surely doesn’t fit the name. While I’m thinking of it, let’s see what the name “Rogue” means:

  1. A dishonest or unprincipled man. E.g. “you are a rogue and an embezzler”
synonyms: scoundrelvillainmiscreantreprobaterascalgood-for-nothingne’er-do-well and wretch.
  1. An elephant or other large wild animal driven away or living apart from the herd and having savage or destructive tendencies.  e.g. “a rogue elephant”.

What’s in a name? One has to wonder what prompted the naming of this SUV. But it also means a man who causes trouble in a playful way. I like that definition better.

General Information: It is assembled in Smyrna, Tennessee. Classification is Small SUV’s. Cars from Nissan: 370 Z Coupe, 370Z Roadster, Altima, Altama Sedan,Armada, Cube, Frontier, GT-R, JUKE, LEAF, Maxima, Murano, Murano CrossCabriolet, NV Cargo, NV Passenger, NV200, Pathfinder, Pathfinder Hybrid, Quest, Rogue, Rogue Select, Sentra, Titan, Titan XD, Versa Note, Versa Sedan and Xterra..

Handling & Performance:

Very capable, comfortable car with good power considering the good mileage it gets. The size, for me, is perfect. It is easy to maneuver, park and in general handling is very good. It feels more like a midsize, to me even though it is classified as a “Small” SUV. The model I tested had 3rd row seating and I guess that made it seem larger.

Styling:

Pretty traditional SUV styling and for a ‘small’ SUV it is the only one in class to give the option of a 3rd Row Seat. That option is priced at $940.

Fit and Finish:

Very good.

Cost:

Exceptionally good pricing all things considered.

Conveniences and comfort:

Nissan divide and hide cargo area is perhaps one of the most interesting features found in any manufacturers bag of tricks. It divides and stabilizes cargo in nearly 20 different configurations that are easy and quick to use. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJajzY_TMGQ is a link to a video of this feature. Nice.

Consumer Recommendations:

This Rogue should be one in the competition you test drive. Drive the Rogue first and for the money I believe you’ll return for a second look and buy it. Of those listed the Rogue is the only one to give a 7 seating capacity. All others seat 5.

Recognized Competition:

Nissan Rogue $25,000, Honda CR-V $33,000, Ford Escape $25,000, Mazda CX-5 $30,000, Toyota RAV-4 $32,000.

Good News:

Very good fuel economy, versatile seating and cargo use, well priced.

Bad News:

Standard Equipment:

2.5 liter inline 4-cylinder 170 hp engine, CVT – continuous variable transmission with sport and Eco modes, front wheel driver, 4-wheel ABS disc brakes, 17” alloy wheels, hill start assist, 1,000 lb tow capacity, front, side and curtain airbags, LATCH child safety system, dynamic control, traction control, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist, vehicle immobilizer system, security system, tire pressure monitor, 6-way power driver seat with power lumbar support, 40/20/40 folding and reclining seating, 60/40 sliding second row row seats, 5” color audio display, Sirius XM satellite radio, 6-speaker AM/FM/CD audio system, USB connection port for iPod interface and other compatible devices, Bluetooth hands free phone system, streaming audio via Bluetooth, hands free text messaging assistant, 3 12-volt power points, rear view monitor, dual zone climate control, 2nd row seat a/c vents, Nissan divide and hide cargo, power door locks and windows, intellegent key with push button start, daytime running lights, auto on/off headlights and roof rails.

2016 Chevrolet Volt Premier Hatchback A Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle (1138)

Overview: This is the 2016 Chevrolet Volt Premier Hatchback plug-in hybrid. Well the Volt has survived the market changes over recent years, but I’m guessing it has more to do with the Subsidies Electric vehicles are subject to rather than because of consumer acceptance. In the meantime since 2013 the Avalanche, Aveo, Aveo5 and HHR are no longer made.

You may recall past discussions of how electric vehicles are not a new thing. At the turn of the 20th Century Electric cars were made and had about a 100 mile range. Electric cars today do no better. Hybrids however are new technology products and like this Volt are far better than all electric.

You also may know that I would never own an All Electric vehicle. They simply are not perfected. In the meantime this Volt is the best option. Fuel economy is wonderful with 106 mpg combined electric and gas engine. Gas only delivers 42 mpg which is quite good. It is a win-win combination and one you can live with.

All electric cars like the Tesla is, in my opinion, are a disaster and not recommended.

When it comes to new power plant options I’m more impressed with the Hydrogen powered engines. I believe Hydrogen will have as good a chance of replacing Gasoline engines as All Electric cars could. If there is a miraculous breakthrough in better storage batteries everything could change. But I’m more excited with the fact consumers can produce hydrogen fuel at home or anywhere. In the mid-1970s gas stations were cut in half and more adjustment nearly 50 years later is likely. Perhaps someday they would be totally eliminated if Hydrogen and / or Electric becomes the primary source of energy for our cars.

General Information: It is assembled in Detroit, MI, USA. Classification is Compact. Cars from Chevrolet: Camaro, City Express, Colorado, Corvette, Cruze, Equinox, Express / Cargo van, Impala, Malibu, Silverado 15, 25 and 3500, Sonic, Spark, SS, Suburban, Tahoe, Traverse, Trax and Volt.

Opinion and Observation – Automotive Innovation Reviewed:

History: 1948 – Daimler Mercedes Benz introduced Electric Windows; 1940 – First car to have air conditioning was a 1940 Packard; 1938 – Buick introduced turn signals; 1929 – First car radio introduced; 1923 – First Supercharger Ferdinand Porsche, Stuttgart, Germany; 1920 – Power steering invented by Francis Davis; 1903 – Windshield wipers patented; 1885 – first patent for seat belts; 1901 – invention of disc brakes by British inventor Frederick William Lanchester; 1901 – New York first state to require license plates that were called “Number Plates”. France did it in 1893; 1898 – First drive shaft invented by Louis Renault; 1890 – Canadian Thomas Ahearn invented the first electric car heater.

Handling & Performance: In 2013 I reported I could travel 35-38 miles on battery only. In 2016 I found I was getting about 50 miles. There are settings in this new model to use electric only, hold electric and use engine only or the default Normal setting is a combination where the engine would engage when electric is exhausted.

So if you commute around 40 miles and can plug in at work maximum MPG can be achieved. Of course, if work is only 20 miles from home, this car makes even more sense. A full charge takes about 4.5 hours at 240 volts and 13 hours for 120 volt service (12 amps).

Styling: Very pretty design. I like it a lot and could see myself owning this car.

Fit and Finish: Very good.

Cost: After looking at a Tesla for $100-150,000, Volt make much better sense. Volt is a very efficient low cost transportation option. Cars like Tesla are more about snob appeal. For me, the major advantage to the Volt is comfort appeal, knowing that I wouldn’t get stuck for hours for re-charging. I was always stressed over planning and constant worry about how far I would be able to travel between charges. Thus All-electric becomes very expensive and Volt becomes the better choice..

Conveniences and comfort: The Volt is eligible for single occupancy HOV lane Access in California and that is worth the price of admission for many. . . especially in places like Los Angeles.

Consumer Recommendation: You do the math, but based on a compact at about $20,000 that gets around 40 MPG and this Volt at $39,000, even if it gets 106 MPG, could be a break-even cost. Keep in mind there is a cost to the electricity used at home. In Los Angeles and other cities that allow single Diamond Lane access for cars like this Volt it can be a great benefit.

Options that I recommend include blind zone alert with lane departure alert and rear cross traffic alert.

Recognized Competition:

Chevrolet Volt $39,000, Ford Fusion Energi $37,000, Lincoln MKZ $36,000, Lexus LS $42,000, Nissan LEAF $30,000, BMW i3 $47,000.

Good News: Attractive styling, hatchback convenience, comfortable commuter with combined 106 mpg efficient.

Bad News: ?

Standard Equipment: 1.5 liter internal combustion engine, Electric Drive unit, Lithium Ion battery propulsion, front and knee front seats, side curtain and seat mounted airbags, 4-wheel ABS disc brake system, LATCH child system, thert deterrent systrem, stability control with traction control, remote keyless entry with remote start, power door locks with lockout protection, tire pressure monitor, keyless access, rear vision camera, automatic parking assist, front and rear park assist, 17” aluminum wheels, heated power mirrors with manual fold, rear window defroster, vairable intermittent wipers, climate control air conditioning, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, Leather wrapped heated steering wheel with controls, display screens, cruise control, leather appointed heated front and rear seats, 60/40 split fold rear seat, power windows, cargo cover, Mylink radio with XM and 8” screen, front bucket seats, Apple Carplay capability, wireless device charging, Bose 8-speaker audio, OnStar with automatic crash response, Navigation, two USB ports and auxilary input port, Bluetooth hands free.

2016 Mazda 6 I (1137)

Overview:

This is the 2016 Mazda 6 I and you will be impressed as I was. This is a fine automobile in a pretty broad lineup of competitors. It is among the most efficient family sedans in entry cost as well as operating costs. There is very little negative commentary, on Mazda products, on the whole.

Older folks will recall that 4-door sedans were a no-no to the youth of the 1960s generation. Those were ‘not cool’ then, but today design has blended the versatility of 4-doors without sacrificing style. The youth of today isn’t as resistant to 4-door cars.

General Information: It is assembled in Hofu, Japan; Parts – US/Canadian 0%, Japan 95%   Engine and transmission – Japan; Classification is Midsize. Cars from Mazda: CX 3, CX 5, CX 9, Mazda 2, Mazda 3, Mazda 5, Mazda 6, MX-5 Miata.

Opinion:

Safe Driving is impressed on all who frequent a race track. But professional race drivers have a special need for speed, and it is fulfilled on the track. It is, by any measure, treacherous and dangerous. I have observed friends who ARE pros on the track, tend to be exceptionally good and cautious drivers on public highways. I believe that is because they have such a stressful job on the track, they are content to enjoy off the job driving.

Conversely many non-professional drivers also can have a ‘need for speed’ but haven’t the availability of a race track to get it out of their system. Thus they do their racing on city streets and highways and that is a recipe for disaster.

Case in point is, just this morning, content to avoid the busy freeways, I took one of my alternate routes “over the San Gabriel Mountains” of Southern California to Pasadena. It is a route devoid of traffic and one that gives me a venue to test a cars performance. I wasn’t testing this morning however and when a sport car came up behind me anxious to go ahead, I pulled over to let him pass. He zipped on by and quickly faded into the road ahead of us. I enjoyed the early morning drive without any pressure of traffic congestion. As I came around one corner I was not surprised to find my young friend in a hurry had spun out on a hair pin turn and crashed into the mountain. I stopped to see if he was okay and he was, so at his request I called his dad when I got to where I had cell service.

A race track is more forgiving and if you go off course you don’t’ have to worry about running off a cliff or crashing into a mountain. At least the young man was not racing on a congested highway where he would certainly have involved others in the situation that surely ruined his and his dad’s day.

Handling & Performance:

Very good handling and power in class. Turbo would be nice but with the unwanted tradeoff of poor fuel economy. Today’s 4-cylinder engines deliver more than adequate power for my taste. It is a surprisingly agile performer. On a test track or mountain course it is sure to impress for a family 4-door sedan.

Styling:

Very nice contemporary design.

Fit and Finish:

Very well assembled. I always am gratified how much better made cars of today are. It is an evolution revolution that has eliminated squeaks and groans of yesteryears cars. Nice.

Cost:

Competitive in class

Conveniences and comfort:

Outstanding array of standard features and I particularly like the Blind Spot detection system. I was not as thrilled with the (not-standard feature) adaptive cruise control. It disengages as it slows to 20 mph and that can be disastrous as it fails to brake after that point. A near silent bell sounds to let you know if you don’t brake you will crash. Not good.

Consumer Recommendations:

Mazda has been a consistent performer with very little “Hype” in the form of advertising. Thus it is very high on my list of ones to include in your test drives.

Recognized Competition:

Mazda 6 $31,000, Subaru Legacy $31,000, Hyundai Sonata Hybrid $31,000, Volkswagen Passat $31,000, Honda Accord Hybrid $36,000, Kia Optima Hybrid $33,000, Chrysler 200$28,000, Chevrolet Malibu $32,000.

Good News:

Good compliment of standard equipment, smooth ride and good power while delivering very good fuel economy.

Bad News:

Although I’ve listed MSRP for the standard equipment, the test vehicle was equipped with Mazda Radar Cruise as an option (also known as Smart or Adaptive Cruise). I had a problem with the functionality of the option as noted and hope the company will remedy that weakness. Most other competitor’s smart cruise will function in traffic without driver intervention.

Standard Equipment:

2.5 liter 4-cylinder 184 hp engine, Front Wheel Drive, 6-speed auto transmission, 19” alloy wheels, rain sensing windshield wipers, heated power mirrors with turn signals, Rear Spoiler, leather trimmed sport seats, Heated front seat, power windows and locks, leather trimmed sport seats, 8-way power drivers seat, with power lumbar support and seat memory, 6-way power front passenger seat, auto dim review mirror, 7” color touch screen display, Bluetooth hands free phone and audio, rearview camera, keyless entry system, LATCH child safety system, Smart city brake support, tire pressure monitor, Blind spot detection system, 4-wheel disc brakes, power assisted steering, stabilizer bars, auto on/off headlights, daytime running lights, fog lights, power moonroof, active driving display, leather wrapped steering wheel with mounted controls, cruise control, power auto door locks, power windows, USB audio input, dualzone auto climate control with rear seat vents, 60/40 split fold down rear seat, Bose 11 speaker sound system, power ABS brake system with electronic brake force distribution, stability control, traction control, hill launch assist, front, side and front and rear side curtain air bags, rear cross traffic alert.

2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution GSR 4-door Sedan – Final Edition (1136)

Overview:

This is the 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution GSR 4-Door Sedan. It’s always sad when a brand is gone, but models are sold at the pleasure of the consumer. Sometimes the market isn’t broad enough to justify the model. A lot of devoted hearts will be crying because those who loved this high performance sports sedan and latched onto it won’t see it after this 2015 year model. The market segment, in my opinion, appealed to youthful drivers probably more than middle to late year adults. It was the youth who would ooh and aah over the Evo’s I have tested over the years.

The first generation was in 1992 and it was intended to be marketed only in Japan originally. Mitsubishi decided, however, to export the eighth generation Evolution to the United States in 2003 after witnessing the success Subaru had in that market with their long-time direct rival, the Subaru WRX.

When GM dropped the Oldsmobile and the Pontiac it was a heart breaker for many. I’m sure the reason that it was a difficult business decision for GM, and it ended a brand that was a century old. I’m sure when I’m 100 folks will want to get rid of me too.

Although the Evo, as a high performance car that is ‘fast and furious’, it isn’t as comfy as most would prefer. How else can you explain how smooth and quiet sells so well!

General Information: It is assembled in Kurishiki, Japan Parts – US/Canadian 0%, Japan 96%; Engine and transmission – Japan; Classification is Compact Cars. Cars from Mitsubishi: iMiEV, Lancer, Mirage, Outlander and Outlander Sport.

Handling & Performance:

All Evo’s use two litre, turbocharged engines and all-wheel drive systems. That spells performance in my book. No question they have provided a thrill a minute for drivers who have a need for speed.

Styling:

It has matured over the years and this Evo has become more sophisticated and pretty.

Fit and Finish:

Good.

It is expensive but not so much if performance is your goal.

Conveniences and comfort:

It is well appointed with most of the safety driving features but is not as comfortable as I look for in a car. The features I missed on this car was Blind Spot Warning and Adaptive or smart cruise control.

Consumer Recommendations:

This may be a good investment if it becomes a classic in 25 years and if you have the time and patience to wait that long.

2017 Kia Sportage SX AWD (1134)

Overview:

This is the 2017 Kia Sportage SX AWD SUV or as some refer to it, CUV for Crossover Utility Vehicle. As if time isn’t passing fast enough a 2017 model year is on the scene. Really. Can’t they wait?

Although it is ahead of its time according to the calendar, it isn’t even significantly different from the 2016 in wheel base and overall length. The styling in this very popular segment of the market is mostly clones of one another. The differential in all brands is more importantly a matter of company philosophy in my opinion. That, in itself however, will determine the quality at the end of your day. It will be YOU who must maintain your vehicle for a long way away from the showroom floor. So selecting the long relationship you will have with that most useful of assets, should be made carefully.

There is something special about a “Brand New” car that no one else has driven. Is it worth the new car cost depreciation between that showroom floor and the street just feet from the highway because that is where it will spend the rest of its life? That is the consumer’s decision to make. All the same, I’m guessing, most of us have been happy with a used car that someone else did in fact drive and care for or abuse. But it also was they who had to suffer the sometime necessity of getting the bugs out. Nothing and no one is perfect.  .  . not even my hero Hyundai and Kia as a company.

I’m biased because I work with Hyundai in another area of the company. That experience has influenced my decision to recommend their products. No they are not perfect but they are special when it comes to a manufacturing company. I have to clarify that a bit because they are a relatively young car maker, which explains why they are as good as they are. The new kid on the block has to give more to gain your confidence and thus your business. For the consumer that should be a big factor in their buying decision.

This Kia’s warranty is among the very best available in today’s world. The quality will be obvious to you on the very first test drive. And as important is the great list of features at competitive pricing that make the driving experience a very good one.

General Information: It is assembled in Korea; Parts – US/Canadian 1%, Korea 96%; Engine and transmission – Korea; Classification is Small SUV. Cars from Kia: Cadenza, Forte, Forte 5, K900, Optima, Rio, Rio 5-door, Sedona, Sorento, Soul, Soul EV and Sportage.

Opinion:

It has been my observation over the past few years that the most aggressive and fast drivers on the highway today drive Honda cars. I simply wonder why. But they must be either very lucky or stealthily pilot their Honda’s invisibly to pass undetected by the CHP. Why? Because, according to Insurance.com, they are not in the top of the list. In fact they are 131 out of over 300 more ticketed brands and models. They are just a little over the average for all cars. Subaru WRX is number one and that is easy for me to believe. Not because I’ve been ticketed while driving / testing one, but rather because they are not only fast cars, they handle as if they were on rails at a Six Flags Magic Mountain ride.

Another observation is that for the most part today’s drivers are better than they have ever been. That is partly because of the vast improvement in the technology that makes them hug the road and stop even when the driver is day dreaming. I’m sure you have also noticed, however, that some drivers just don’t get it – that driving a car is a great responsibility. Example: if you are not passing traffic on your right that is the lane you belong in. The fast lane is on the left and traffic is more orderly when you find the correct lane that suits your driving and speed habits. There is nothing wrong with driving slower than others but it is appreciated when you do it in the correct lane. Just say’n.

Handling & Performance:

Handling and performance is “As good as it gets”.

Styling:

Pretty car but ordinary in the whole scheme of things.

Fit and Finish:

Very good which is a characteristic of Asian car makers in particular. Those who are old enough to remember the phrase “Made in Japan” know that it wasn’t always so.

Cost:

All things considered this Kia is Very Competitively priced.

Conveniences and comfort:

Perhaps the most desirable and important features on the automotive market for me is the Blind Spot Detection system.  #2 for me is the Smart Cruise with Crash avoidance capability. Those features are very timely since without them you can’t safely text while driving. Just kidding of course.

Consumer Recommendations:

Do include these Korean cars in your search for one of the most utility of assets you will ever purchase. You won’t regret it, I promise.

Recognized Competition:

Kia Sportage SX $34,000, Honda CRV $34,000, Mazda CX-5 $31,000, Ford Escape $32,000, Hyundai Tucson $26,000.

Good News:

Great features especially the safety systems.

Bad News:

Only fair fuel economy.

Standard Equipment:

2016 Dodge Charger SXT(2002)

2016 Dodge Charger SXT Review

BY Mike Mavilia

Overview:

Since the rebirth of the Charger in 2006, Dodge has continually injected new life into this American Classic. This eye catching 4 door sedan has a sporty interior, ample seating, 4 powerful engine options ranging from the 292 horsepower V6 to the 707 horsepower supercharged V8. It’s not the only sedan on the market with Performance and Style, but when you look at the domestic alternatives it sure does stand out. Other domestic considerations may be the Ford Fusion, Chevy Impala or the Buick LaCrosse, none with the the attitude of the Charger.

Road Test:

Listed as the base engine, the 3.6 liter, 292 horsepower V6 has enough power to maneuver the highways while still allowing for satisfying fuel economy. The V6 does not have the unique “purr” of the V8 but acceleration between the two is only slightly noticeable. The smooth shifting of the 8 speed automatic transmission sure is nice when commuting in heavy traffic. When needed, the well tuned transmission still has sporty low gears to and transitions to a very quiet cruiser at high gears.

The most important features of a vehicle with power is the ability to handle the turns and stop when needed. No matter which model Charger you choose the driving experience is definitely enhanced with its tight suspension and responsive braking.

Convenience and Comfort:

The interior options are plentiful and allows you to tailor your ride with a sporty yet comfortable driving experience. A good mix of 12 volt and USB power outlets throughout the car makes it simple to power several devices at one time.
The redesigned center console shifter gives Charger a distinctive level of sophistication. The electronic shifter with AutoStick mimics the operation of a traditional linkage shifter, while allowing for smoother and more efficient shifting.
Those in need of super tech, the feature rich touch screen display with Navigation, Bluetooth and additional apps to enhance your daily drive are a must. The size of the display is just the right size for all the features and apps right at your fingertips. With the ability to add premium paid services through the UConnect system allows you to remote start the car, turn on the heat or AC as well as warm up your seats directly from a mobile device. .
Seating is very comfortable and spacious enough for 5 full sized adults. The front bucket seats are well formed and keep you in place when taking corners..

Good News:

Spacious interior with plenty of leg room for up to 5 passengers. Feature rich and touch screen head unit. Smooth ride with enough horsepower to accelerate with ease.

Bad News:

The only thing that i wish Dodge had done differently with the Charger was the direction in which the shifter is moved to change it from automatic to manual shifting. Rather than pulling the shifter towards you leaves you accidently changing from auto to manual when turning. My natural instinct is to hold the shifter when in manual mode to allow for quick shifting on a curvy road, which is difficult to remember not to use it as a
Another note is the direction to downshift. Most people would tell you that when in manual mode, you would pull the shifter down to downshift and push up to upshift. Not the case here, and it takes a little while to get used to. .

Standard Equipment:

Engine: The Gas 6.0L V8 truly is the right engine for this truck.
Transmission: The 8-speed automatic transmission makes city or highway driving smooth sailing!
MPG: 19 city / 31 highway is adequate for a daily driver.
Curb weight: At near 4,000 lbs. Accelerating and braking are never an issue
Horsepower: 325 hp
Fuel tank capacity: 18.5 gal
Tire size: P235/55R19
Wheel size: 17″ diameter, 7″ width

2016 Kia Optima Hybrid EX (1133)

Overview:

This is the 2016 Kia Optima Hybrid EX. It is a midsize family sedan and the overall feeling of reviewers and myself is that there is little to complain about with this car as in the past. Both my daughter, who traded her previous Kia – a Sorento SUV for the Optima, and granddaughter own the Optima. Although I talked my daughter into her first Kia she took it from there after driving the Sorento for over 4 years. Once the kids were grown she didn’t need an SUV any longer and the Optima fits her need better now

General Information: It is assembled in USA; Parts – US/Canadian 1%, Korea 96%; Engine and transmission – Korea; Classification is Midsize. Cars from Kia: Cadenza, Forte, Forte 5, K900, Optima, Rio, Rio 5-door, Sedona, Sorento, Soul, Soul EV and Sportage.

Handling & Performance:

Excellent in all respects. And the kicker is that I am convinced this Hybrid will get 500 miles from a tank of gas. Impressive. I’m not a fan of electric cars but with the Hybrid you have the confidence you won’t get stuck when the charge runs out. The engine provides not only that confidence, it also is fast when you need it. You’ll notice, as I did, this car is smooth – really a nice ride.

Styling:

Clean lines and has that luxury brand look, but at a fraction of the price of those (you know which I mean) with the expensive badges.

Fit and Finish:

Typical of Kia cars that are well designed and assembled. Well fitted seams and no squeaks or groans.

Cost:

Competitive.

Conveniences and comfort:

Very good although I prefer more cargo area. It is just adequate for my taste, but that is so because it is a Hybrid. I like the tradeoff. In summary I find this to include the most user friendly interface with the occupants. The sound system is very good.

Consumer Recommendations:

Luxury comes in many forms. Name brand cars sport a badge developed over many years but this new comer is gaining momentum in the industry. Rightfully so.

I missed the “Blind Spot Warning” feature and it points out how impressive and useful this option is. I would encourage you to add that on your next purchase.

Recognized Competition:

Kia Optima Hybrid EX $33,000, VW Jetta Hybrid SEL $32,000, Ford Fusion Energi $35,000, Honda Accord $33,000, Toyota Camry Hybrid XLE $31,000.

Good News:

Competitive pricing, great looking car, smooth fast ride, very good in safety, comfort and convenience considerations, very good fuel economy, very nice sound system and lastly the Nav system scree is perfect and easy to use.

Bad News:

Cargo only adequate.

Standard Equipment:

2.4 liter 4-cylinder hybrid engine, 6-speed automatic transmission, 17” alloy wheels, electronic parking brake, 4-wheel ABS disc brakes, dual front, side and full length side curtain airbags, LATCH (lower Anchor and Tether for Children) system, traction and stability control systems, stability management system, hill start assist control, tire pressure monitor, climate control, power windows and locks and power heated folding outside mirrors with turn signal lights, Infinity audio with 8 speakers, SiriusXM satellite radio, Navigation system with 8” rear camera display, Bluetooth wireless technology, leather trimmed seats, 10-way power driver seat with memory, 4-way power passenger seat, heated and ventilated front seats, heated outboard rear seats, remote keyless entry push button start with smart key, heated leather wrapped steering wheel, power folding mirrors, 10 year / 100,000 limited powertrain warranty.
