2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4X4 75th Edition (1154)

Overview:

This is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4X4 75th Edition. On the Dashboard handhold passenger side is proudly stamped 1941 to recognize the heritage. In fact, they should refer to Jeep as the Heritage Series. And no question about it, Jeep has been blazing trails ever since WWII.

Although it is classed as a Small SUV the first words out of Ilona’s mouth was “this is a big car”. She says that, most likely, because it sits high as an off road vehicle must. So like big trucks it sets as high as most trucks and SUV’s. It also sports big tires for the purpose intended.

I tested the Automatic transmission instead of the 6-speed manual that comes standard on the 75thEdition. Automatic 5-speed transmission adds $1,350 to the price and for me that would be the way to go. It also has a soft top that gives it more flexibility than the hard top which is a costly option. If you like the open air out in the wild it is easier to put down than removing that heavy hard top. Tradeoffs to be sure. The major negative to the soft top is the more difficult access to loading gear into the cargo area.

General Information: It is assembled in Toledo, Ohio, USA. Parts – US/Canadian 73%, Engine and Transmission – USA; Classification is Small SUV. Cars from Jeep: Cherokee, Compass, Grand Cherokee, Patriot, Renegade & Wrangler.

Handling & Performance:

1154 jeep-jamboree- on the rocksJust as you’d expect from an off road master, it is a little rougher riding on the highway but not much different around town as any other small truck. Fuel economy is not all that great but the V6 is pretty powerful and I like that. Overall it is acceptable on highway because on a long ride I found it to be very comfortable aside from the added noise because of the soft top and the knobby tires.

If you have never been on a Jeep Jamboree somewhere in the USA and you are an outdoors lover and you own a Jeep you should look into it. What a ball and the education on driving off road is fantastic and the like-minded people are fun too. That is where you really get the performance off road. Difficulty of the venue goes from 1 to 10 being most challenging. That would be like the Rubicon Trail in Northern California. Awesome. https://jeepjamboreeusa.com/tripsregister/

1154 jeep-jamboree-10-1300x300

Styling:

Jeep has remained so consistent for 75 years that the styling is simply “Jeep”. Everyone knows what that means. They wrote the book for off road look and feel and image.

Fit and Finish:

Fit and finish is as good as it needs to be for a rough and tumble outdoor capable trail blazer. Naturally it gets more refined over the years, but people who drive these things don’t want them for negotiating the speed bumps on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Jeeps are as tough and ready to rumble and as adventuresome as those who drive them.

Cost:

If you will only be using a Jeep for commuting on pristine roads of the city, don’t waste your money and frustrate the personality and performance of Jeep. BUT, if you are doing some serious outdoor trek-ing you’ll get your money’s worth.

Conveniences and comfort:

Wrangler is not loaded down with Highway gadgets like adaptive or smart cruise control or sensors to warn you of traffic around you. This Wrangler is more comfortable in the outback or woods and wilderness venues. The money is put into strong shift on the fly 4WD, heavy duty rear axle and solid front axle, fuel tank and transfer case skid plates, electronic roll mitigation and trailer sway damping. You know, practical things.

Consumer Recommendation:

If you are an RV / Motorhome advocate the Jeep is the best tow vehicle you can have, in my opinion. Ease of disconnecting the drive train is simple. Further information: One source is at  www.bleepinjeep.com

Recognized Competition:

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited $34,000, Chevrolet Traverse $40,000, Toyota 4Runner $40,000, Nissan Pathfinder $39,000, Honda Pilot $38,000, GMC Acadia $40,000, Kia Sorento $41,000.

Good News:

Amazing off road vehicle, relatively comfortable ride on road.

Bad News:

Although it has improved over the years the fuel economy is still only 20 mpg.

Standard Equipment:

3.6 literV6 engine, 5-speed automatic transmission, shift on the fly 4X4, solid front axle, heavy duty rear axle, skid plates on fuel tank and transfer case, 22.5 gal fuel tank, front airbags, stability control, 4-wheel disc brakes, traction control, electronic roll mitigation, hill start assist, trailer sway damping, sentry key theft deterrent system, security alarm, tire pressure monitor, cruise control and radio.

2016 Chrysler 200 Limited Platinum (1153)

Overview:

This is the 2016 Chrysler 200 Limited Platinum. With such cars on the market it seems nearly impossible for anyone NOT to be availing themselves of great transportation.

Cars have captured the imagination of American youth from the turn of the 20th century as much or more than the 21st Century technology has. The major difference is that cars get people out and about while the computer age of smart phones etc. relegate people to a “Virtual Reality”. Sorry, folks, I appreciate Google and the research ability it affords but if it and other computer thing-a-ma-bobs replaces the exhilaration of getting out into nature and the adventures of exploring the real world it is a diversion I can do without.

Bottom line – Cyber world is a pretend existence but getting into your trusted car or truck and venturing outside your front door will breathe life into you. The kids of today are mesmerized by the make-believe and thus are missing so much that the world has to offer, it saddens me. To my grandkids I say, lose the iPods, iPads and all the gaming and go out and play while you still can learn something of value. You have plenty of time to vegetate on the couch watching football or some other useless pastime. Trust me on this one. You won’t be sorry.

General Information: It is assembled in Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA. Parts – US/Canadian 64%, Mexico 18% Engine and Transmission – USA; Classification is Midsize cars. Cars fromChrysler: 200, 300, Pacifica & Town and Country.

Handling & Performance:

Perfectly capable. It did well on the mountainous Crest Test and sports lots of power. However, for me I would have been just as happy with the 4-cylinder. As it was, fuel economy was still very good.

Styling:

unnamedThe 200 has the sleek design of today and I believe it is timeless.

unnamed (1)

This styling will not go the way of the Edsel or the Dodo Bird.

Fit and Finish:

Very good in class.

Cost:

Exceptional value.

Conveniences and comfort:

Good set of features as far as standard equipment and of course as priced. Me, I still prefer some important options like Smart Cruise Control, Crash avoidance and blind spot detection which are a few of the more important developments of recent years. Consumers drive demand for such enhancements to the driving experience and its safety. Demand these things and more will come and more cheaply as we well know.

Consumer Recommendation:

Shop your need always. If you are alone with lots of cash in the bank or under the mattress, buy a Ferrari and some gold necklaces and travel in real style. But if you’re normal the Chrysler is a better option. It will carry all the kids and other liabilities you surround yourself with. But you know what, you’ll have fun either way.

Recognized Competition:

Chrysler Ltd Platinum $28,000, Acura TLX $32,000, Nissan Altima  $32,000, Kia Optima Hybrid $32,000, Buick Regal $34,000, Toyota Camry $32,000, Volkswagen CC $35,000, Honda Accord $31,000.

Good News:

Affordable, attractive and comfortable transportation to reach out for adventure down the highway.

Bad News:

I can’t justify a Ferrari.

Standard Equipment:

3.6 liter V6 engine, 9-speed automatice trans, stability control, traction control, 4-wheel ABS power disc brakes, electric park brake, power steering, keyless entry and go, security alarm, cruise control, ParkView rear back up camera, LATCH reard Child seat anchor system, front, side and side curtain front and rear airbags, driver & front passenger knee airbags, air conditioning, Uconnect 5.0,  6-speakers, integrated voice command with Bluetooth, audio jack input for mobile devices, remote USB port, steering wheel mounted controls, power windows and manual 6-way driver and front passenger seats, tire pressure monitor, compass gauge, tilt and telescopic steering column, 12-volt auxillary power outlet in console.

2016 Jeep Cherokee Overland 4X4 (1152)

Overview:

This is the 2016 Jeep Cherokee Overland 4X4. I believe consumers attach themselves to a particular brand very early on in their lives. But many factors change how the car buyers move to other brands along the road. The cars they buy in their family years means they buy utility or convenience as they take care of responsibilities of children. A commuter, a family mini-van to shuttle the kids off to soccer or little league, and all the rest.

I’m guessing, like me, budget influenced your early decisions on what car to own and of course your need at the time.

But then when people get older they tend to become kids again and get back to their youth that so impressed them. They, necessarily, have a different motivation in later life. Consider that older generation who accumulate a stable of classic cars that impressed them early in their lives. One restored Chevy or Ford or Pontiac or whatever all the way to larger collections that were simply impossible in their youth.

Go to any car show, car night at drive-in restaurants, and the like and you find auto lovers proudly parading their cars with that gleam in their eyes remembering those Happy Days of youth. Then they return their show pieces to their garages, not so different from Jay Leno’s Garage which, of course, is extensive. Then they get into their daily driver for the usual, knowing they still have the exceptional parked for that next drive down memory lane.

Yes, to one extent or another many of us have an Automotive Love Affair for our own reasons. But surely it has little to do with ‘transportation’.

General Information: It is assembled in Toledo, Ohio, USA. Parts – US/Canadian 69%, Mexico 18% Engine and Transmission – USA; Classification is Small SUV. Cars from Jeep: Cherokee, Compass, Grand Cherokee, Patriot, Renegade & Wrangler.

Handling & Performance:

Outstanding … (not exceptional, but outstanding)

Styling:

Consummately Jeep.

Fit and Finish:

Very good. Jeep has been improving over the many years I have been driving them… and nearly all other cars made for human consumption.

Cost:

I’m wondering if there isn’t a good explanation for pricing in most segments of the market to be nearly identical. You might think there is price fixing going on, but my take on the reason for the closeness in pricing is that all cars today are made by way of CAD (computer aided design) systems. That leaves very little to chance in the creation to significant cost differentiation. Thus the only reason why some will be more competitive falls on how efficient the company is; how good the management is, how in touch with the consumer demand they are and of course how much advertising they do to communicate the value. Such matters are what make pricing variations possible for one company over another.

Conveniences and comfort:

Smart cruise is good on this Jeep, but I have tested cruise versions on other cars that operate more smoothly and seamlessly.

But Jeeps version does include a stop and start feature in traffic and that is very cool. You literally can set the speed and just monitor conditions while touching neither the brake or the gas pedal. It reduces stress for me and that is worth the price of admission (for me). That was one of the options that was on my test vehicle, and I always appreciate having the feature and miss it when the next car doesn’t have it.

Instrumentation and electronics generally are all very good and Bluetooth is super easy to set up.

Lane assist and blind spot detection are special and two of my favorites.

Consumer Recommendation:

Smart cruise included in the Technology Group should be considered. I believe it will one day soon be standard on all cars. It has many benefits and one of better utilizing the highway space. I’ll give the details in a future Opinion segment of the column.

Recognized Competition:

Jeep Cherokee Overland $39,000, Audi Q3 $40,000, Acura RDX $43,000, BMW X3 $40,000, Lexus NX $40,000, Land Rover Discovery Sport $47,000, Lincoln MKC $50,000, Mercedes Benz GLC $42,000, Volkswagen Tiguan $37,000, Volvo XC60 $39,000.

Good News:

Priced right for the standard features and affordable extra safety features, comfortable ride.

Bad News:

Only average fuel economy in class.

Standard Equipment:

3.2 literV6 engine with stop/start, 9-speed automatic transmission, front, side curtain front and rear and supplemental rear seat side airbags plus driver and passenger knee airbags, hill descent control, hill start assist, off road suspension, rear back up camera, parksense rear park assist system, blind spot and cross path detection, keyless enter and go passive entry, remote start system, traction control, stability control, 4-wheel ABS disc braks, leather wrapped shift knob and instrument panel, heated wood and leather wrapped steering wheel, Uconnect Nav and access, 7” color display, HD radio, SiriusXM satellite radio with 9-speakers, integrated voice command with Bluetooth, A/C dual zone climate control, power driver and passenger seats with power 4-way lumbar support, heated and ventillated front seats, 18” polished aluminum wheels, Bi-Xenon High intensity headlights, LED tail lamps, fog and cornering lightspower liftgate and heated power mirrors.

I recommend the ‘Technology Group’ that includes: forward collision warning with active braking, parallel and perpendicular park assist, adaptive (smart) cruise control with stop and go, advanced brake assist, rain sensing wipers, auto high beam headlights, lane sense lane departure warning with lane-keep assist. All this adds $1,495 to the MSRP. A bargain.

2016 Hyundai Veloster R-Spec M/T (1150)

Overview:

This is the 2016 Hyundai Veloster R-Spec M/T 3-door coupe.  This and other competitors noted below appeal to the younger driver during the ages 16 and 25 or so, in my opinion. Why 25? Because that is when cars cease to be the most important defining thing in a young life and young men especially, are more likely to be looking at marriage… kids and car seats.

General Information: It is assembled in Ulsan, Korea; Parts – US/Canadian 0%, Korea 94%; Engine & Transmission – Korea; Classification is Compact Cars. Cars from Hyundai: Accent, Azera, Elantra, Elantra Coupe, Elantra GT, Equus, Genesis, Genesis Coupe, Santa Fe, Sonata, Sonata Hybrid, Sonata Plug-in Hybrid, Tucson and Veloster.

Handling & Performance:

This Veloster features Torque vectoring which is a new technology in the differential to transfer engine torque to the wheels. Torque vectoring technology provides the differential with the ability to vary the power to each wheel. It is popular in all-wheel drive vehicles but also is employed in some newer front-wheel drive vehicles like this Veloster. This feature allows for the wheels to grip the road for better launch and handling.

Styling:

Nice lines and I like the sporty touches on the interior seating stitching. Again, I believe it appeals to the younger set from my experience. Young people, mostly guys of course, are obvious when they gawk at these need for speed looking cars.

Fit and Finish:

Very well assembled and well-fitting components in this price range. As you may recall that has not always been true. Earlier cars in all brands were really pretty sloppy fitting.

Cost:

All the cars in this segment noted are nearly identically priced.

Conveniences and comfort:

Pretty basic features on the car I reviewed. But it is, overall, a comfortable car to drive. I put 100+ miles a day on a car and I notice when it doesn’t meet reasonable standards of comfort. However, the Manual Transmission will not be to the liking of many and most youthful drivers don’t even know what a manual transmission is.

It did not include conveniences I appreciate such as Smart Cruise, crash avoidance and other warning sensors that are becoming more commonplace. It does, however, include Stability Control and traction control and ABS brakes with Brake Force Distribution. No NAV but my phone and most likely yours has Nav.

Consumer Recommendations:

If you are looking for a performance / sporty car this is the best of the competition noted and recognized in the industry. However, I think it can effectively compete with more upscale sports cars like: Mazda MX5 Miata – over $25,000, Scion FR-S – over $25,000, Subaru WRX – over $26,000, Ford Mustang – over $24,000 and even the Nissan 370Z which is over $29,000.

Recognized Competition:

Hyundai Veloster $22,000, MINI Hardtop $22,000, Volkswagen Golf $21,000, Fiat 500 $21,000.

Good News:

Fast and furious fun ride, 3-door convenience for rear seating, good pricing for a sporty performance car.

Bad News:

Limited space and limited use application and thus limited to a more youthful consumer.

Standard Equipment:

1.8 liter Turbo GDI 201 hp  4-cylinder engine, 6-speed manual transmission, sport tuned suspension,  4-wheel ABS disc brakes with electronic brake assist and brake force distribution, torque vectoring control, stability and traction controls, front, front side and side curtain airbags, tire pressure monitor, 18” allow wheels, fog lights, LED taillights and rear wiper, air conditioning, 450W sound system with external amp with subwoofer, CD, MP3 with 8 speakers Siius XM radio, iPod / USB and Aux input jacks, 7” Multimedia touchscree monitor, rearview camera, remote keyless entry with alarm, leather bolster seats, steering wheel monted cruise, audio and phone controls, bluetooth hands free phone system, leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, 60/40 split folding rear seat.

2016 Hyundai Genesis (1149)

Overview:

This is the 2016 Hyundai Genesis. Hyundai designers took a minimalist approach to the dashboard and center console it is said. For me it brings a distinct airiness to the cabin. The interior driver cabin isn’t overwrought with buttons, controls or busy shapes. There’s everything you need, but it’s never in your way and never cluttering. I think you will like the simplicity and straightforward operation of the rotary-dial and other features.

This is truly distinctive to Hyundai and in sharp contrast to other brands, most noticeable in the German brands. Mercedes, Audi and BMW mimic an airplane instrument panel. This difference is clutter and confusion to most I’ve talked with. More importantly Hyundai has designed for more simple and intuitive user interface of all features.

General Information: It is assembled in Montgomery, Alabama, USA; Parts – US/Canadian 5%, Korea 90%; Engine & Transmission – Korea; Classification is Large Cars. Cars from Hyundai: Accent, Azera, Elantra, Elantra Coupe, Elantra GT, Equus, Genesis, Genesis Coupe, Santa Fe, Sonata, Sonata Hybrid, Sonata Plug-in Hybrid, Tucson and Veloster.

Handling & Performance:

I found the Genesis to be a confident and comfortable driving experience. It is fast and has a very smooth ride. Standard on every Genesis is a system that monitors and modifies engine throttle response, transmission shift points and steering to provide optimal unnamedperformance in a variety of road conditions. Drivers can select: Eco for conserving fuel, Normal for comfort, Sport for dynamic driving and Snow for low-traction road conditions.

The link is to view a video explaining HTRAC all-wheel drive if you’re considering the AWD option or even if you are not.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=UpJv81Zx1yc

Styling:

Nice job from the design staff at Hyundai. Clearly it is a beautifully styled automobile.

Fit and Finish:

Excellent.

Cost:

Competitive. The increase in demand for Hyundai products has pushed the pricing closer to its longer established competition. However, you may find American made Dodge and Chevrolet brands to be very aggressively priced to gain your business back. It is worth a “Look-See”. They came to the party with super competitive pricing.

Conveniences and comfort:

There are optional equipment packages that took my test vehicle to nearly $50,000. Signature Package $3,900; Tech Package $3,500; Ultimate Package $3,500. Many interesting options but the only ones I would really want include * Blind Sport detection with rear cross traffic allert, * Smart Cruise control with Stop / Start,  * Automatic emergency braking and * Lane Departure warning and lane keep assist. These noted features are included in the pakages mentioned above. I wasn’t able to reach anyone to tell me if these features could be selected individually or not. But I will tell you those packages have other stuff you may want.

Some say the seats are not as comfortable on the long rides as in some other brands. I drive 100 miles a day and haven’t noticed this criticism to be correct.

Consumer Recommendations:

You likely will own your car for a while so you will need to consider if the options packages are worth the added cost. But you will want to check that out because they enhance the driving experience and more importantly they add greatly to safety. In fact, I might even suggest you check out a lower priced model so you can afford some of those safety features.

Finally, there are only six competitors noted here and you surely will want to include all before you make your final decision. I’ve tested them all and have my favorites but they are all impressive options.

Recognized Competition:

Hyundai Genesis $40,000, Buick La Crosse $41,000, Chrysler 300 $39,000, Toyota Avalon $41,000,Dodge Charger $35,000, Chevrolet Impala $36,000.

Good News:

It’s got style, it’s comfortable, it’s powerful and good fuel economy at a competitive price.

Bad News:

Standard Equipment:

3.8 liter 311 hp V6 GDI aluminum engine, 8-speed automatic transmission, intelligent drive mode, electronic traction and stability controls, vehicle stability management control, 4-wheel ABS disc brakes with electronic brake assist and brake force distribution, 9 airbags including driver knee airbag, rain sensing wipers, heated power folding side mirrors with turn signal indicators, 12 way power (front) leather seating, leather wrapped tilt and telescoping steering wheel, proximity keyless entry and push button start / stop, 8” touchscreen navigation system with rearview camera, 4.3” color LCD multi-information display, dual zone climate control, Bluetooth hands free phone system with audio streaming, Blue Link telematics system, 18” alloy wheels, audio system with 7 speakers, Sirius XM, Steering wheel mounted audio and cruise control, tire pressure monitor.

2017 Hyundai Elantra ECO (1147)

Overview:

This is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra ECO (for Ecology).  There is a growing appreciation for Korean cars. The new kid on the block is usually not quickly accepted, but Hyundai and Kia cars are so good they have quickly weaved their way to the top. Avis said it best a few decades ago when they advertised “We’re number 2, we try harder” when competing with number 1 Hertz. Well, being relatively new to the world market, Hyundai had to try harder and it shows. Thus, they have thoughtfully made cars backed by the best Warranty in the industry.

This Elantra features upscale interior finishes and can be equipped with a host of features more commonly found in pricier cars. The Elantra competes directly with the highly ranked Honda Civic and the lower ranked, but popular Toyota Corolla.

General Information: It is assembled in Montgomery, Alabama, USA; Parts – US/Canadian 29%, China 1%, Korea 70%; Engine & Transmission  – Korea; Classification isMidsize/Compact. Cars from Hyundai: Accent, Azera, Elantra, Elantra Coupe, Elantra GT, Equus, Genesis, Genesis Coupe, Santa Fe, Sonata, Sonata Hybrid, Sonata Plug-in Hybrid, Tucson and Veloster.

Handling & Performance:

Engines get smaller to give better fuel economy but the Turbocharger gives that extra punch when needed. Keep the pressure off the gas pedal and you can get pretty fantastic mpg up to 40. Now that’s what I’m talking about and it is simply gas injected – so no hybrid complication possibilities to drive the price up.

It can be powered with either a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine in the SE and Limited or the turbocharged, 1.4-liter four-cylinder that I had in this test vehicle. It produces 128 horsepower. That doesn’t sound like much but the Turbo is an equalizer that makes it very responsive.

Styling:

Nice. What more can you say. Some cars jump out at you ugly, but this Hyundai model lineup are all pretty nice looking cars.

Fit and Finish:

Very good and it is normal for Hyundai cars.

Cost:

Pricing starts at $17,150 and this Elantra ECO with features noted is $20,650. Outstanding value.

Conveniences and comfort:

It comes standard with a good features and my test car included some of the most important features for my money, including blind spot detection and brake force distribution. As you may recall, EBD automatically varies the amount of force applied to each of a vehicle’s wheels, based on road conditions, speed, loading, etc. for very effective stopping that makes it much safer than traditional brake systems of years past.

Consumer Recommendations:

The Elantra is a good option in this segment of the market. You may want to also test drive the Sonata that is a step up from the Elantra. If your budget can take another leap up, the Genesis is pretty special. I’ll tell you more about the Genesis after testing it next week.

Recognized Competition:

Hyundai Elantra $23,000, Chevrolet Cruze $24,000, Honda Civic $25,000, Mazda 3 $24,000, Kia Forte$22,000.

Good News:

Great pricing coupled with exceptional fuel economy. Turbo fast and comfy ride.

Bad News:

Some electronics / technology frustration but it is minor compared to the usually intuitive interface with the user.

Standard Equipment:

1.4 liter Turbo GDI engine, 7-speed eco-shift dual clutch automatic transmission, drive mode ECO, Normal and Sport, electronic traction and stability controls, ABS electronic brake assist and brake force distribution, front, side curtain air bags, driver knee airbag, blind spot detection with rear cross traffic alert, rearview camera, 15” alloy wheels, audio system with 7” touchscreen and 6 speakers, Sirius XM, android audio and Apple CarPlay support, dual zone climate control, Bluetooth hands free zone, Steering wheel mounted audio and cruise control, leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, heated front seats, 60/40 split folding rear seat, proximity key and push button start and smart hands free trunk.

2016 Volvo S60 T5 Inscription FWD (1146)

Overview:

This is the 2016 Volvo S60 T5 Inscription FWD 4-door sedan. Volvo has always been a great conservative family car and increasingly it has become a car of distinction in design as well as quality.

You’ve got to admire the marketing departments who develop how the consumer perceives the brand. Family and friends tell me they see the Volvo brand as a car that implies responsible owners and drivers. Surely the serious family person is more concerned on how a car fits the need of the family as opposed to driver’s desire to look cool. How often do you hear someone say “you’d look good in that car”? Better you’d consider how good you make the car look.

General Information: It is assembled in Chengdu, China; Parts – US/Canadian 1%, China 60%, Japan 10%; Engine – China; Transmission – Japan; Classification is Compact. Cars from Volvo: S60, S80, S90, V60, XC60, XC70 & XC 90.

Handling & Performance:

Simply put Volvo is always a delightful driving experience and one of my favorites. And this car delivers better than average performance as well as fuel economy which is among the best in class.

Styling:

Volvo, for as long as I can remember, has given the impression it is a safe car to drive. Today Subaru is trying to establish the same perception for their brand. It works for me. I want a car from a company who emphasizes safety.

Volvo styling is also very identifiable on the highway. The grill has that diagonal chrome strip on it that is unique to Volvo. That is also the case with very large Volvo commercial trucks and that diagonal effect is unmistakably Volvo.

Fit and Finish:

Volvo is very attentive to the finer details of assembly. Well done.

Cost:

Competitive in class.

Conveniences and comfort:

I’m a real stickler on ease of use of any feature and I was mildly disappointed that the electronics were not as intuitive as they could be, of course, in my opinion. I know I could adapt but I’d rather see improvement by the company.

This is just a general comment and surely only a suggestion to Volvo to look at other brands more closely to make things more user friendly and intuitive.

I also think they could have done a better job with storage, or cubby-holes and catch-all’s for the driver in particular.

But something that doesn’t need improvement is the Adaptive or Smart Cruise Control. That feature is among the best on any car. This is one of the better adaptations of the feature in that you can literally stop and start in traffic without touching the gas or brake. It is smooth and sure. For me it takes the stress out of driving.

Consumer Recommendations:

When you consider the cost of auto ownership most people look closely. Owning an automotive repair shop for more than a decade I can say we didn’t see all that many Volvos in for repair. But below is an interesting list of cars we did see a lot of for repairs.

Consider a list of the 10 most expensive cars to own and drive

Good News:

Very good fuel economy, solid comfortable ride, distinctively attractive styling and among the best smart cruise control features available.

Bad News:

2016 Dodge Charger SXT RWD Blacktop (1144)

Overview:

This is the 2016 Dodge Charger SXT Rear Wheel Drive Blacktop 4-door sedan.

Mike Mavilia has the same model as I’m reviewing so I asked him to give his take on his own Dodge Charger. He will have a Video link photo on the website version of this review at www.atthewheel.com.

Mike’s opening comments:

Since the rebirth of the Charger in 2006, Dodge has continually injected new life into this American Classic. This eye catching 4 door sedan has a sporty interior, ample seating, 4 powerful engine options ranging from the 292 horsepower V6 to the 707 horsepower supercharged V8. It’s not the only sedan on the market with Performance and Style, but when you look at the alternatives it sure does stand out. Other domestic considerations may be the Ford, Chevy, Buick or Chrysler, but none with attitude as is the personality of Charger.

General Information: It is assembled in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. Parts – US/Canadian 64%, Mexico 26%; Engine – USA – Transmission – Germany; Classification is Large cars; Cars from Dodge: Avenger, Challenger, Charger, Dart, Durango, Grand Caravan, Journey and Viper.

Handling & Performance:

Listed as the base engine, the 3.6 liter, 292 horsepower V6 has enough power to maneuver the highways while still allowing for satisfying fuel economy. The V6 does not have the unique “purr” of the V8 but acceleration between the two is only slightly noticeable. The smooth shifting of the 8 speed automatic transmission has sporty low gears and transitions to a very quiet cruiser at high gears.

If you are looking for power, then look no further! The supercharged 6.2 liter 707 horsepower Hellcat Charger must be driven to be believed. Its upgraded performance package doesn’t stop at the engine. The most important features of a vehicle with this much power is the ability to handle the turns and stop when needed because of its enhanced tight suspension and responsive upgraded disc braking system.

Safety features of note that have been available since 2011.

Rain Brake Support: The system uses the ESC pump to occasionally push brake pads lightly against brake rotors in rainy conditions in order to keep rotors dry

Ready Alert Braking: the system anticipates situations when the driver may initiate an emergency brake stop and uses the ESC pump to set brake pads against rotors in order to decrease the time required for full brake application.

Styling:

A performance car persona with attitude.

Fit and Finish:

Very good.

Cost:

Competitive in this segment of the market.

Conveniences and comfort:
The interior options are plentiful and allows you to tailor your ride with a sporty yet comfortable driving experience. Those in need of super tech, the feature rich touch screen display with Navigation, Bluetooth and additional apps to enhance your daily drive may be a must-have to some.

Consumer Recommendation:

Surely you will want to include all of these offerings when you make such an important buying decision. I know you will have your favorites but you could surprise yourself and find others may trump your usual brand preference. In this class all the big three are represented . . . so some who prefer to “Buy American” will lean that way.

Recognized Competition:

Dodge Charger $31,000,  Buick LaCrosse $32,000, Chevrolet Impala $31,000, Chrysler 300 $33,000, Kia Cadenza $34,000, Ford Taurus $37,000, Toyota Avalon $38,000.

2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit 4X4 (1143)

Overview:

This is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit 4X4. I make no apologies for being devoted to Jeep. It has proven itself to me for many years. I have tested other off road vehicles but they just don’t measure up. I tested all the Hummer models but the memory that remains is how I was got stuck in the original $100,000 Hummer and an old Chevrolet Blazer.

The clincher that reinforced my trust in Jeep came with the Jamboree and Jeep Camps I attended. It was there I learned how amazing Jeeps perform over unbelievable terrain that we were able to traverse.

General Information: It is assembled in Wentzville, MO, USA. Parts – US/Canadian 62%,Mexico 20%  Engine – Italy; Transmission – Germany; Classification is Standard SUV. Cars from Jeep: Cherokee, Compass, Grand Cherokee, Patriot, Renegade & Wrangler.

Handling & Performance:

All the Jeeps have a great off road prowess and on road comfort and performance except for the only fair fuel economy, thanks to 4X4 capability. You can’t have both off road 4X4 and high economy. But 28 Highway mpg isn’t bad.

Styling:

Styling is a very traditional Jeep with a rich history for 75 years. The brand has matured from a warrior vehicle of WWII to an out-of-doors adventure vehicle owned by men and women who love the challenge of rough and tumble adventure.

Fit and Finish:

Very well assembled… thanks in part to the Daimler Benz years of ownership and influence. That speaks to how much better we are when we share and work together. Another example of that fact can be seen in how much Jaguar advanced under the ownership and influence of Ford for a time.

Cost:

Grand Cherokee is a little pricey, but it is the top contender of the brand. If off-road is your thing this is just too pretty to get into the weeds. But it is capable if you need it to go where others simply can’t go.

Conveniences and comfort:

When comfort is important the Grand Cherokee is the cat’s meow with the benefit of off-road capability when needed.

Consumer Recommendation:

My next car will be a Jeep Wrangler to tow behind a Motorhome, because I know first-hand how handy they are off-road as well as an ‘easy tow’ vehicle. As a reminder – I recommend Jeep owners consider attending a Jeep Jamboree. It is an experience you won’t regret as you meet some great folks.

Notes regarding the competition listed below: Acura MDX, BMW X5 and Land Rover LR4 seat 7 – others seat 5.

Recognized Competition:

Jeep Grand Cherokee $53,000, Cadillac SRX $53,000, Acura MDX $53,000, Mercedes Benz GLE $53,000, Volkswagen Touarag $64,000, Lincoln MKX $57,000, BMW X5 $57,000, Land Rover LR4 $62,000, Lexus RX $50,000.

Good News:

Equipped well for off road if you must while providing on road comfort and great safety features, competitively priced and decent fuel economy,

2016 Dodge Dart Rallye (1142)

Overview:

This is the 2016 Dodge Dart Rallye 4-door sedan. Son Michael just bought a Dodge Charger and was observing the Dart would appear to be a scaled down version of the Charger. Same seats as his charger and other similarities. Just a little smaller.

Over the past years Chrysler cars and trucks (Ram) have emerged from near bankruptcy to a very impressive American car company. Surely the history of great leaders like Lee Iacocca and the subsequent purchase by German Giant Daimler Benz, speaks to the many changes that have given vitality to a company that was a cornerstone of the auto industry.

Today the Big 3, GM, Ford and Chrysler plod on in a world where they have spawned other competitors in Japan and most recently Korea. They further have embraced the need to join the global market and manufacture reciprocally in Mexico, Canada, Europe and Asia. Wisely done.

General Information: It is assembled in Wentzville, MO, USA. Parts – US/Canadian 59%, Mexico 20%; Engine – USA – Transmission – Republic of Korea; Classification is Midsize; Cars from Dodge: Avenger, Challenger, Charger, Dart, Durango, Grand Caravan, Journey and Viper.

Handling & Performance:

By all measure this Dodge Dart is a good representation of Chrysler in a very active segment of the market. It gets impressive highway fuel economy and is a nice midsize family sedan and comfortable commuter. In this price range however it lacks some of the features I have been touting for some time now. I can’t imagine ever buying another car without such features as “Blind Spot Warning”, “Smart Cruise Control” and would consider strongly justifying other new high tech safety features, like lane departure and crash avoidance.

Styling:

Very “today” in design that is attractive if consumer demand is how we measure such things.

Fit and Finish:

Very good assembly and it is comparable with all other brands in its market segment.

Cost:

Very well priced. All companies are joined at the hip in pricing which leads one to consider there is collusion or price fixing. However technology is so commonplace in manufacturing that all companies come up with the same design constraints and cost accounting is precise.

As important is the fact that marketing information and social media buzz give instant feedback on what is hot and what is NOT where the consumer is concerned. And finally changes can be instant so there are no Edsel boners of years past.

Conveniences and comfort:

Basic for the most part characterizes this level of transportation. But in terms of safety and comfort basic is far and away superior to what I grew up with in the mid-20th Century where Basic really meant something. 4 wheels an engine and transmission hanging on a frame covered with little more than a hunk of sheet metal and a rag top. Comfort meant you had a windshield, a basic heater and a push button radio to drown out the road noise. In the 1960s you may even have had the money to afford air conditioning. Wind wings were would soon be no longer needed. Only old guys and gals will relate to much of what I just said. Awe, nostalgia. Don’t you just love it.

Consumer Recommendation:

If you are on a tight budget, as so many of us are these days, you will want to include this very nice and capable transportation car in your search for a very affordable family sedan.

Recognized Competition:

Dodge Dart $25,000,  Mazda 3 $24,000, Chevrolet Cruze $25,000, Hyundai Elantra $22,000, Kia Forte $21,000, Acura ILX $29,000.

Good News:

Very good fuel economy, basic needs but very comfortable and well appointed.

Bad News:

n/a

Standard Equipment:

2.4 liter inline 4-cylinder engine, 6-speed auto transmission, 4-wheel ABS disc brakes with brake assist, electric power steering, stability and traction control, Roll mitigation, hill start assist, keyless entry, tire pressure monitor, speed sensitive power locks, front, front seat side airbags, front and rear side curtain airbags, rear seat side aibags, driver knee bolster airbag, radio with single disc CD player, Uconnect voice command with Bluetooth, 6 speakers, steering wheel mounted audio controls, cruise control, air conditioning, audio jack input for mobile devices, 60/40 rear seat with trunk pass through, manual 6-way driver and passenger seat adjustment, power windows, tilt and telescopic steering column, auto headlights and daytime running lights.
