2017 Cadillac XT5 compact luxury crossover

2017 Cadillac XT5 compact luxury crossover

“An Automotive Love Affair”

By Joseph Mavilia

The new Cadillac XT5 is improvement over SRX. Interior is all comfort – shown in available Platinum edition trim.

Photos by Cadillac.

Not just a new SUV – it’s a Cadillac

Cadillac’s current marketing campaign says, “you can make a car, or you can make a Cadillac.” This new XT5 delivers on that idea.

Cadillac had a winner with the original SRX. As good as the SRX was, it’s been replaced with the all-new 2017 Cadillac XT5. It boasts fresh styling, a roomier interior, less weight, better fuel economy and user friendliness.

The styling is consistent with the current Cadillac design language, so it looks right among the other models. Present are the familiar and signature visuals that make a Cadillac a “Cadillac,” – the waterfall grill, sharp edges, aggressive raked profile. Even though the XT5 is offered as the entry level crossover SUV for Cadillac, the vehicle does not cut any corners when it comes to delivering Cadillac brand feel, with luxury both on the outside and inside.

“The all-new XT5 not only enters the most popular segment in the worldwide luxury auto market, it is the first of four new crossovers from Cadillac,” said Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen. “It’s pivotal to our ongoing growth, which is why we’ve developed XT5 from the inside out to provide customers more space, more technology, more luxury and more efficiency.”

The new luxury crossover joined Cadillac’s lineup along with the CT6 Sedan. The XT5 is the next chapter in elevating the Cadillac brand: it is bold, distinctive, sophisticated with superb driving dynamics. This new crossover perfectly reflects Cadillac’s positioning in the luxury automotive marketplace, de Nysschen said.

VEHICLE HIGHLIGHTS:

3.6-liter V6 engine.

8-Speed Automatic Transmission

Fuel economy estimates range from 19-mpg city to 27-mpg highway.

– Lightweight construction elevates efficiency and driving performance

– All-new design and structure increases interior space without adding bulk

– New V6 engine and advanced all-wheel drive

– New tech includes rear camera mirror, Apple Carplay & Android auto compatibility, new CUE system

Vehicle Rivals: All premium compact luxury crossover SUVs, especially Lincoln MKX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Lexus RX, Mercedes-Benz GL-Class.

The 2017 Cadillac XT5 is powered by the new 3.6-liter V6 engine which debuted on the ATS and CTS sport sedans and is featured on the CT6. This engine has been completely redesigned and delivers output of 310-horsepower and 271 lb-ft of torque.

The Cadillac XT5 rides on a unique chassis and structure that showcases its lightweight and agile driving dynamics. The chassis tuning is superb and unique, delivering a driving and ride experience more common many thousands of dollars up-market.

The XT5 brings a new level of sophistication to Cadillac’s evolving design language. “The XT5 has a great stance, with wheels further to the corners and overhangs reduced,” said Andrew Smith, Cadillac executive director of global design.

The XT5’s interior is based on a philosophy of clean, modern elegance and craftsmanship.

“We believe that luxury crossover customers particularly focus on interior design and materials,” Smith said. “This design direction is predicated on modern craftsmanship and the artistic integration of technology.”

Interior surfaces inside the XT5 are wider and more horizontal in orientation, emphasizing efficient use of space. Like all Cadillac models, the interior is assembled with cut-and-sewn wrapped panels, rather than molded surfaces typical of mainstream vehicles.

“Our focus for the interior was sophistication and simplicity, ensuring an economy of lines to reduce visual noise and clutter,” Smith said. “A feeling of space is the ultimate luxury, so we sought to emphasize that. We also use a greater variety of authentic materials and palette of colors to deliver expressive interiors in all trim levels.”

THE VERDICT

Cadillac scores another hit with the new XT5. Overall a high-value, luxury package that is delightful. Cadillac offers a Platinum edition for the first time in this segment, which raises the luxury quotient well above the European rivals.

2017 Honda CR-V

2017 Honda CR-V Review

The Honda CR-V is no secret. In fact, it’s currently the best selling crossover on the market. And for

2017, the CR-V has been completely redesigned, both inside and out.

Now in its fifth generation, the exterior has become increasingly sculpted, with more edges and lines than ever before. The previous teardrop shape has gone away, and it now has a much more athletic and sporty appearance. This is carried on into the wheels, which enrich the visual appeal and fit the vehicle perfectly.

On the inside, the new interior is comprised of many different colors, textures and materials, all of which work very well together. The previous generation CR-V had an attractive and functional cabin, however for 2017 they’ve made some improvements. Starting in the middle, the 7” infotainment screen on the top 3 trims looks clean and now features a volume knob, something that had gone away in past Hondas. Dual zone climate control is standard on most trims, which is always a nice way to make sure your front seat passenger stays happy.

The seats are comfortable, even on long drives. Heated seats are optional, however cooled seats are not available. Another unavailable feature is a panoramic moonroof. A standard sunroof is an option, however the panoramic moonroof is only available to North American buyers in Canada. Hopefully it makes its way into the U.S. in the next year or two.

The interior is spacious and roomy for up to 5 total passengers. In the rear seat, both headroom and legroom are ample. A USB port is available in the second row, however a rear seat entertainment system is not. The center arm rest can be difficult to lower, and don’t even try if you just had your nails done, as there’s no built-in location to place your fingers to bring it down. Oddly enough, we found closing the doors to be much more difficult than it should be. If we didn’t put some muscle into it, the door wouldn’t close all the way. It’s a small detail, but one we found to be quite annoying.

A convenient feature we’re seeing more and more is the ability to open the liftgate with the wave of your foot, which is included on the CR-V. This is truly a helpful option and after you use it once when your arms are full at the grocery store, you’ll wonder how you ever got along without it.

On the road, the 1.5L inline turbo 4-cylinder engine felt peppy and even engaging. With the CVT transmission Honda uses on all trims, driving enjoyment could have easily been lost, however with the turbo, we found ourselves forgetting about the CVT all together. The engine’s 190 horsepower and 179 lb-ft of torque could squeal the wheels from a stop or quickly accelerate during a pass on the highway. The LX trim on the other hand is powered by a 2.4L incline 4-cylinder, which produces 184 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque. Even though the numbers are similar, fuel economy is a little worse with the 2.4L, and the driving experience is definitely not as enjoyable.

Our fuel economy averaged 30mpg in combined city and highway driving, which was a hair better than the 29MPG combined Honda claims for the AWD Touring model. All-wheel drive is available on all trims, and both LKAS (Lane Keep Assist System) and adaptive cruise control are available. We thoroughly tested each of these features and were impressed with their performance. Lane keep assist systems on other vehicles don’t always read the lines on the road very well or don’t respond quick enough. The system in the CR-V however performed just as you’d expect.

The 2017 Honda CR-V starts at $24,045 and can climb to $37,000 with a fully loaded Touring model. At all price points, the CR-V is an excellent value. It’s no surprise it’s the best selling crossover in America.

2017 Dodge Challenger(1200)

2017 Dodge Challenger T/A

“An Automotive Love Affair”

By Joseph Mavilia

Overview:

This is the 2017 Dodge Challenger T/A (which stands for Trans-Am which was an SCCA racing series from the 1970’s). To me, and I suspect for many of you, it represents the ‘golden age of muscle cars’. And in the spirit of those days and the Chrysler struggle to stay alive I want to repeat a little history of the company that points to the character of the human experience that should always be remembered.

During the years that Chrysler cars and trucks (Ram) were near bankruptcy a great leader was needed and Lee Iacocca stepped up to the plate to help save the failing company.

Lee Iacocca

Then the subsequent purchase by German Giant Daimler Mercedes Benz was just what the doctor ordered in making further changes that were needed and have given vitality to a company that had been a cornerstone of the auto industry.

Today the Big 3, GM, Ford and Chrysler, are not as important in the world as it was from the beginning to the mid-20th Century. It was then that the market began to shift to Asia and even Europe grew as well as consumers began to accept foreign products. Japanese products, early on, were junk. (The turnaround began in the early 1960s.) Demand and acceptance of foreign cars caused the shift away from cars ‘made in America’ and foreign cars became a movement.

Acceptance was fueled by growing costs to produce in America. Even discouraging import taxes couldn’t shake the resolve of the Japanese or deter Americans from purchasing foreign. US manufacturing labor costs were not competitive and the union workers gave the advantage to the Japanese car makers. So, I, and a huge number of ‘otherwise’ patriot Americans, were romanced by lower prices and better fuel economy.

Clearly it was the high cost then and now that give the advantage to the efficient. Now, even Japanese cars are often made in other countries as their own labor costs can be beat in Mexico, China and Korea. Both America and Japan have done what comes naturally in economics. They go elsewhere for reasonable labor cost. Result – Detroit has turned into one big Slum.

As friend Richard reminds me, “All error is self-correcting”. . . or “It is costly wisdom that’s bought by experience and experience is the name everyone gives their mistakes”. American car makers were king no more and had to compete, step up to rising gas prices by improving fuel economy and yes shuffle assembly to China and Europe. We’re back, but the cost has been huge to American companies and American Jobs. And yes Union’s played a part in that which was the undoing of all the good Union’s did for workers at the turn of the 20th century.

General Information:

It is assembled in Brampton, Ontario, Canada Parts – US/Canadian 60%, Mexico 29%; Engine – Mexico and Transmission – USA; Classification is Midsize; Cars from Dodge: Challenger, Charger, Dart, Durango, Grand Caravan, Journey and Viper.

Handling & Performance:

A 5.7 liter 372 horsepower V8 HEMI (High Energy Metals, Inc. or HEMIspherical combustion chambers in the engine) MDS (Multi Displacement System which shuts down 4 of the 8 cylinders to conserve fuel) VVT (for Variable Valve Timing) speaks volumes to car guys, but in short it is an exciting power plant that takes us back to the Muscle car days of the mid-20th Century. Those were happy days but the roar of the engines of the day also excited the passions of youth.

Today it has the same effect on the senses of sight and sound and touch as you press the pedal to the metal. The combination excites the senses in a rather magical way with a smooth acceleration and solid ride. You gotta love it.

Styling:

Muscle Car and Retro in the best sense of the words. Now, this is my Idea of going GREEN.

Fit and Finish:

This isn’t the Chrysler products your grandparents drove. It is even better and truly world class.

Cost:

Well, this is a relative value. But it is competitive in today’s world.

Conveniences and comfort:

Consumer Recommendation:

If you are adventuresome or simply want to revisit your youth this may just be the car for you. When I was in that bygone time zone I had a love affair with a 28 Ford model A Sedan – Corvette powered. This Challenger ride tickled my memory and I smiled.

My sedan was featured in the June 1956 issue of Hot Rod Magazine.

Recognized Competition:

Dodge Challenger $41,000, Chevrolet Camaro $42,000, Ford Mustang $38,000, Honda Accord $35,000.

Good News:

Excitement is not for everyone which is what you get. It is a spectacular ride as you flashback half a century to the glory days of Muscle cars. It passed with flying colors on the mountain road course. Fabulous!

Bad News:

It is only green in color – it is after all a Muscle Car. 2-door inconvenience if you need to carry more than 2 people.

Standard Equipment:

5.7 liter 392 HP V8 HEMI MDS VVT engine, 8-speed automatic transmission, front, side, side curtain front and rear airbags, active exhaust, sport suspension, sport mode, performance brakes, rain brake support, ready alert braking, stability control, traction control, power steering, hill start assist, tire pressure monitoring, keyless enter and go, sentry key theft deterrent system, 5” touchscreen display, 6 – speakers, media hub for SDE, USB and Aux ports.

K in Aqua Dulce, Ca

Hi joe, I live in AD and always enjoy reading your reviews in the journal… question I’m 5’9″ and my husband is 6’2″ – how is seat comfort and head room in this car? we always have challenges in this area….. be safe in the heat, k.

Joe Mavilia :

Hi K

The headroom was commented by observers, friends and relatives. All were impressed with the overall room and especially noted how much headroom there was both front and back. I think you’ll enjoy the test drive and find that 6’2” should not be a problem.

As I think I noted, wife and I took it to Las Vegas for a river rafting trip down the Colorado. She is 5’9” as well and would complain if it weren’t a comfortable trip of several hours. We were impressed. Later I had the VW Dune convertible and that would be an interesting comparison as well but it was over $10,000 more than the Fiat and fuel economy is far better in the Fiat.

Thanks for your interest in Autolove.

2017 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible

2017 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible 1.8T Dune

By Joe Mavilia

Overview:

This is the 2017 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible 1.8T Dune. Well, where do you start. So many applications….. all except space for many people or luggage. BUT, this would be my top pick for my college son or daughter. It is fun to drive and a very capable car. It is stable, solid and feels totally safe on the curvy roads or highway speeds.

It is a fun car because it speaks Beach, travel, out of doors top down adventure. The top is a one button down and up with no hastles to be ‘topless’ in seconds. I recently completed a test of the Fiat 500 Cabrio (convertible of sorts) and the contrast is notable. The Cabrio is a slide back soft top that is more like a large sunroof. And as is often the case, there is that buffeting feel and noise that is not the case with the Beetle that is a conventional convertible.

General Information:

It is assembled in – Puebla, Mexico; Parts – US/Canadian 12%, Mexico 33%; Engine – Mexico, Transmission – Japan; Classification is Sub-Compact. Cars from Volkswagen: Atlas, Beetle, CC, e-Golf, Eos, Golf, Golf Alltrack, Golf Gti, Golf R, Golf Sportswagen, Jetta, Passat, Tiguan & Touareg.

Handling & Performance:

Excellent feel, easy rider. And for the racing buffs the Beetle posted over 205 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Ok, so it had a 2.0-liter engine (vs the 1.8) and they tweaked the engine a little more… but I have to say this stock one would do over ½ that land speed record for a VW Beetle. I truly enjoyed the ride. Try it, you’ll like it.

Styling:

Classic VW of course.

Fit and Finish:

Excellent.

Cost:

The Fiat 500 I spoke of above is under $20,000 so you’ll be the final word on whether $10,000 is worth the difference in a similar car.

Conveniences and comfort:

For the money, I think this should be equipped with Adaptive (smart) Cruise, Lane Assist, Blind Spot and cross traffic detection at the very least.

Consumer Recommendations:

Include Fiat 500 in your test drives, because it is a lot less money and worthy of consideration. But if a convertible is your thing this one is pretty cool. In my travels, I have driven a lot of V-Dubs but I’ve put my money where I speak and before we got married my wife to be and I chose a Carmen Ghia as our first car together. Then we followed that during college wrap up years with a less expensive Bug and later when our first born came along we bought a brand new 1970 Beetle. All great cars in their league. Meanwhile brother John was buying Ferrari’s – ok he’s also the better looking one.

Recognized Competition:

Volkswagen Beetle $30,000, MINI Conv. $30,000, Mazda Miata MX-5 $27,000, Buick Cascada$33,000.

Good News:

Fun, fast, solid ride, great easy to use convertible.

Bad News:

I don’t know, there probably is something we can all bitch about, but size is the only thing I can think of – IF you need more room.

Standard Equipment:

1.8 liter TSI (meaning it is a Gasoline Direct Injection as for a distinction between the TDI that designates Diesel Direct Injection) 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, 6-speed auto transmission, four wheel independent suspension, front and side airbags, 4-wheel ABS disc brakes, stability control, intelligent crash response system, LATCH child safety system, tire pressure monitor, 16” alloy wheels, auto headlights, fog lights and cornering lights, power heated foldable mirrors, intermittent wipers, power convertible roof, climate control, multifunction steering wheel, leather trimmed steering wheel, brake lever and shift knob, Dune cloth and leatherette seating with yellow piping and stitching, heated manual front seats, split folding rear seat, rearview camera, park distance control front and rear, keyless entry with push button start/stop, 6.5” touchscreen, AM/FM/HD radio with CD player, USB and Aux-in, 6-speaker sound system, Bluetooth mobile telephone connectivity, Sirius XM satellite radio, cruise control, multifunction display with trip computer, power windows and door locks.

2017 Fiat 500 Lounge

2017 Fiat 500 Lounge Hatchback

By Joe Mavilia

Overview:

This is the 2017 Fiat 500 Lounge Hatchback. Until you drive a while in Fiat’s ‘moccasins’ you really have no basis for consideration of its character and performance. If you are in the market for economy and performance all wrapped up in one car, this is a must-see option. Of course, you might say it is only for two people, but that isn’t necessarily true.

Even over the road trips are comfortable for two or acceptable for 4 adults for local short transportation. The ride is smooth and comfortable and I think you too will be pleasantly surprised. What is amazing is that you don’t have that ‘small car’ feeling. It is robust and sure footed.

This is a great commuter with fuel economy of around 33 mpg overall, and it will actually carry four adults with plenty of leg and headroom.

General Information:

It is assembled in Toluca, Mexico; Parts – US/Canadian 19%, Mexico 52%; Engine – USA and transmission – Japan; Classification is Micro Compact. Cars from Fiat: 124 Spider, 500, 500c, 500e, 500L and 500 X.

Handling & Performance:

My wife and I took this Bug-like (in the tradition of VW Bug of historic popularity) on a TREK to Las Vegas for a rafting trip down the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. We were amazed at how it never took a back seat to any car or truck on the highway. Not only did it keep up….. it led the way.

Very impressive performance, for sure, but handling is remarkably the same as larger cars. It is very stable and solid from closing the doors and trunk to the feel on the road. Frankly I would never have imagined it wouldn’t simply be like some other small cars. But it is an incredible little car.

Styling:

Fiat is the 7th largest car company in the world and wouldn’t have achieved that fact unless the consuming public found its products attractive. This Lounge is ‘retro’ with a solid painted dash reminiscent of period cars of the mid to late 20th century.

Fit and Finish:

Very good.

Cost:

Amazing if you think about it. How can they make a capable car like this for 18 grand?

Conveniences and comfort:

This car sports most of the features found on larger luxury brands and it is comfortable for a short trip with 4 adults. But you will not be carrying much luggage at the same time.

Consumer Recommendations:

I believe you will be impressed, so be sure to include it on your test drives. Let me know what you think when you drive it.

Recognized Competition:

Fiat 500 Lounge $18,000 (seats 4), Smart for two $19,000, MINI 2-door $22,000 (seats 4), VWGolf $19,000 (seats 5).

Good News:

Very affordable commuter, zippy performance, great fuel economy and generally a fun experience.

Bad News:

Not for those needing space for more than two with baggage.

Standard Equipment:
1.4 liter 4-cylinder engine, 6-speed automatic transmission, front and side seat mounted and side curtain airbags and driver knee bag, stability control, cruise control, 4-wheel ABS power disc brakes, Tire pressure monitor, Remote keyless entry, audio system with Sirius XM radio, USB, Aux ports and 12 volt power outlet, electronic information center, Uconnect, integrated voice command with Bluetooth, rear park assist, hill start assist, power windows and locks, engine immobilizer, 5” touchscreen display, LATCH child system, climate control, leather wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, tilt steering column, leather trimmed bucket seats / front seats heated, rear 50/50 split fold down seat, 15” aluminum wheels, fixed glass roof with sun shade, fog lights, power heated mirrors, rear window wiper / washer, tinted glass windows.

2017 Volkswagen Golf TSI Wolfsburg Edition(1194)

2017 Volkswagen Golf TSI Wolfsburg Edition

Overview:

This is the 2017 Volkswagen Golf TSI Wolfsburg Edition. VW brings us closer to owning a practical-minded car while still having a luxury car-like experience. This car will impress you with an upscale and well-equipped interior, and turbocharged engine that’s both peppy and fuel-efficient.

Sedans for VW like the Jetta and Passat are more popular in the US, but Golf is tops throughout the rest of the world. For forty years Golf has become one of the best-selling cars of all time. Why is that important? Because you know it will be around when others go the way of the Dodo bird – consider Suzuki, Mercury, Saab, Hummer, Pontiac, Saturn, Isuzu, Oldsmobile, and Plymouth. Try to find parts for those makes or someone who is willing to work on them. Beware.

General Information:

It is assembled in – Puebla, Mexico; Parts – US/Canadian 7%, Mexico 44%; Engine – Mexico, Transmission – Argentina; Classification is Compact. Cars from Volkswagen: Beetle, CC, e-Golf, Eos, Golf, Golf Alltrack, Golf Gti, Golf R, Golf Sportswagen, Jetta, Passat, Tiguan & Touareg.

Opinion / Observation:

Some noted an error in my discussion of Toll Roads recently. The point I tried to make was that, in the Eastern part of the US, you “pay to use” highways (Toll Roads). Meanwhile California’s pioneer spirited people developed ‘free’way systems.

Now we see Toll Roads popping up in California. What could be the purpose if not for raising tax revenues. I refuse to use them and suspect many others avoid them as well. Why, because our gas tax is huge and so the crooked government has found a way to double dip into our wallets. We already pay for our roads at the pumps. If that doesn’t just chap you hide I’d be surprised.

Someone must be making a lot of money out of the ‘Toll Road’ scam against California travelers.

Handling & Performance:

Golf is a solid performer especially with the Turbo engine. Handling of course is easy largely because of size.

Styling:

Design is typical VW today and is much like the VW Beetle of the 1960s – basic transportation look and feel.

Fit and Finish:

Very well assembled that is expected and delivered.

Cost:

There is so much value for the money in cars like this Golf. I wonder if my kids are listening.

Conveniences and comfort:

For the money, you get most of the modern-day technology that is needed in my view.

Consumer Recommendations:

Flip a coin on which one you buy. The important thing is – does this segment of the car market fill your need? Surely it is a car that covers most people’s needs in the US.

Recognized Competition:

Volkswagen Golf $24,000, Mazda 3 $23,000, Toyota Corolla $23,000, Chevy Cruze $23,000, Hyundai Elantra $21,000.

Good News:

Turbo Fast, fun to drive and fuel efficient to boot.

Bad News:

None worth mentioning.

Standard Equipment:

1.8 liter TSI (meaning it is a Gasoline Direct Injection as for a distinction between the TDI that designates Diesel Direct Injection) 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, 6-speed auto transmission, four wheel independent suspension, front and side airbags with side curtain bags, 4-wheel ABS disc brakes, stability control, intelligent crash response system, LATCH child safety system, tire pressure monitor, 16” alloy wheels, auto headlights, power heated foldable mirrors, rain sensing front wipers with heated washer nozzles, power tilting and sliding sunroof, air conditioning, multifunction steering wheel, leather trimmed steering wheel, brake lever and shift knob, heated manual front seats, split folding rear seat with armrest and pass-through, leatherette seating surfaces, front and rear reading lights, rearview camera, front assist includes emergency braking, blind spot monitor with rear traffic alert, keyless entry with push button start/stop, 6.5” touchscreen, AM/FM/HD radio with CD player, USB and Aux-in, 8-speaker sound system, Bluetooth mobile telephone connectivity, Sirius XM satellite radio, cruise control, multifunction display with trip computer, App-Connect for smartphone, integration and interface, remote emergency assistance (subscription required).

If your thing is to have the most expensive car in your driveway go to this link.
http://www.bankrate.com/finance/auto/10-most-expensive-cars-to-own-and-drive-1.aspx#ixzz3xX9RQ6Kz
… But – you won’t find Volvo on that list. But you will find quality and safety in a Volvo.

General Information:

It is assembled in Ghent, Belgium; Parts – US/Canadian 1%, Belgium 30%, Sweden 20%; Engine – Sweden; Transmission – Japan; Classification is Small SUV. Cars from Volvo: S60, S80, S90, V60, V90, V90 Cross Country, XC60, XC70 & XC 90.

Opinion / Observation:

While driving in the fast lane on a highway of two or more lanes in each direction, and folks are passing you on the right you might consider moving out of the fast lane into one more suited for your chosen rate of travel. Another way to put it is “if you are not passing cars on your right that might be the correct lane to be in… or if people are flipping you off it’s a good indicator that you might be day dreaming or putting on your makeup or other activities that distract you from driving responsibly.

A Picture is worth a thousand words. Take a look at this video.

https://www.facebook.com/brightside/videos/458527041161845/

Handling & Performance:

Always a delightful driving experience. It is one of the few cars that just get it done in luxury without all the pomp and ceremony of some ‘bloviating’ brands. I have my list of over-inflated opinions of the products being sold, and I’m guessing you have yours.

Styling:

It just gets better looking every time I test drive one, usually every couple of years.

Fit and Finish:

Very well assembled. Historically Volvo has been known for its quality.

Cost:

Competitive in class.

Conveniences and comfort:

With optional On Call services you can create a wifi hotspot in the car to connect smartphone, laptop etc., to the internet. However, without On Call services you can still use your smartphone with Bluethooth / wifi to connect to all Sensus Connect functions.
You can disconnect from home and reconnect on the road. Very cool.

Consumer Recommendations:

Consider going on line and input the link above for the list of the 10 most expensive cars to own and drive. For me, the initial cost is only the beginning and you truly must consider the cost to keep it running. In youth I heard the joke about going to buy a new car (in the top 10 list of the most expensive to buy) and the salesman brought out a very old ratty car to test drive. When asked why he simply said “because this is the car you’ll be driving most of the time”. Seriously, check out the competition an steer clear of trouble down the line.

Warranty is marginally best on the Volvo and the Lincoln and fuel economy is very close across the board..

2017 Audi A6 Sedan 3.0T Competition Quattro

By Vince Bodiford

Overview:

This is the 2017 Audi A6 Sedan 3.0T Competition quattro. Did I ever mention I love this car? Well I do, but you must not consider German luxury cars unless you can truly afford the price of admission and the price of repairs, both of which are not for the faint-hearted. (meaning you must have a budget as big as your appetite) – no beer budgets allowed, Armand de Brignac Brut Rose Champagne is more like it.

General Information: It is assembled in Neckarsulm, Germany; Parts – US/Canadian 1%, Germany 58%; Hungary 18%. Engine – Hungary and transmission – Germany; Classification is Mid-size. Cars from Audi: A3 Cabriolet, A3 Sedan, A3 Sportback e-tron, A4, A5 Cabriolet, A5 Coupe, A6, A7, A8, Allroad, Q3, Q5, Q7, R8, RS 5, RS 5 Cabriolet, RS 7, S3, S4, S5, S5 Cabriolet, S5 Coupe, S6, S7, S8, SQ5, TT Coupe, TT Roadster, and TTS Coupe.

Opinion / Observation:

Drivers – on the highway today drivers range from polite to complete jerks, as you well know. My advice is to be aware and stay clear of those bad drivers. Those are the ones who tailgate, pass and cut you off and if they are especially having a bad day, they may apply the brakes to scare the crap out of you.

My take on the 100 plus miles a day I drive is that ‘speed’ doesn’t kill, ‘stupid’ does.

Handling & Performance:

Audi’s are always Special when it comes to ability and for some it is flat out fun and exhilarating to drive such cars. When I challenge test cars it is over what I call the Crest Test. Some may not know about Angeles Crest Highway, California route 2, that crosses the San Gabriel Mountains between La Canada and the High Desert to the North.

It is a very curvy route for 40 miles climbing to about 5,000 feet. I’m always confident the ride in an Audi will be the safest and for the uninitiated it may also be the scariest all at the same time.

Styling:

Design is traditional Audi that is very identifiable on the road or more importantly, for some, is how it looks in the driveway.

Fit and Finish:

Excellent, as is the case in this segment of the market.

Cost:

Why does it cost so much – let me count the ways: $67,600 plus options on this test car included Driver Assistance package for $2,550, Silver metallic paint $575; Cold Weather package $500; Destination charge $950 for a total of $72,175. But that is only for the cost side of the story. Performance and wonderful features don’t come cheap. You get what you pay for.

Conveniences and comfort:

Outstanding by any measure as equipped.

Consumer Recommendations:

This is my kind of competition – I hate too many options to choose from whether selecting a car or what to eat at a restaurant. It just occurred to me that must be the reason why Hot Dog Stands do so well… very few choices.

Bad News:

A special driving experience will cost you a bunch.

2017 Audi A4 allroad 2.0T Quattro(1185)

2017 Audi A4 allroad 2.0T Quattro S tronic Review

Overview:

This is the 2017 Audi A4 allroad 2.0T Quattro S tronic. Originally based on the A6 wagon, the Allroad has been based on the smaller A4 since 2011. But in a land where the SUV is king, can a compact wagon really be competitive?

Americans used to love wagons as the family vehicle of choice for decades before minivans and SUVs came along and put an end to their dominance. That’s a shame because unless you need to sit up high, wagons are fantastic with all the handling and performance characteristics of a good sedan along with the ability to carry a bunch of extra stuff.

Audi used to sell some of the best wagons in the U.S., but like so many other brands, it’s gone almost exclusively to SUVs now — almost. There’s still one Audi wagon left in the lineup and that’s the 2017 Audi A4 Allroad.

Other players include the Volvo V60 Cross Country and Subaru Outback and BMW’s 3 Series wagon in the U.S.

General Information:

It is assembled in Ingolstadt, Germany; Parts – US/Canadian 2%, Germany 53%; Engine – Hungary and transmission – Germany; Classification is Small Station Wagon.

It is too soon to know, but reflecting on “Smart Cruise” as a relatively new application in the Auto industry, the questions remain – how much can we trust the technology?

Like a newborn, we must watch them closely until they mature. So, driver intervention is critical.

All of these cutting-edge devices are experimental. Consider the new Autonomous Cars. At the present, there is a small current application such as simple people movers. Examples include ‘trams’ that move Disneyland’s visitors from parking to the entrance. That application appears to be fine, but at this point it doesn’t replace drivers on the highways. Another example is the automation in manufacturing where repetitive product movement works very well.

In the meantime, be very careful not to rely too much on technology to control your car on the highway.

Handling & Performance:

Special.

Styling:

Very similar styling but pricing will impact many in deciding how each differentiates the best look.

Fit and Finish:

Excellent in all of the offerings to choose from.

Cost:

Audi is at the upper end of the price point followed closely by BMW. Volvo and Subaru offer better pricing.

Conveniences and comfort:

Outstanding by any measure.

Consumer Recommendations:

This is my kind of competition – I hate too many options whether it comes to selecting a car or what to eat at a restaurant with a book of choices.

Recognized Competition:

Audi Aa allroad $52,000, BMW 9 Series $45,000, Volvo V60 $39,000, Subaru Outback $37.
