Jaguar debuts three new models for 2018

Jaguar debuts three new models for 2018

By Vince Bodiford

Jaguar came to Michigan to debut three new models, which now includes a wagon. From left – the new XJR saloon, E-Pace crossover SUV, and the XF Sportbrake (wagon). Inside the E-Pace (shown), the lines are clean and understated luxury.

Lineup now includes a wagon and a small SUV

Jaguar chose Novi, Michigan to introduce three new models to the expanded 2018 lineup, including the all-new E-PACE SUV, XF Sportbrake and XJR575 sedan. The new Jaguar vehicles were showcased last week for the first time in North America in Novi at The Art of Performance Tour, an award-winning immersive consumer test drive and engagement experience.

To celebrate the North American launch of Jaguar’s new compact performance SUV, the Jaguar E-PACE is featured in urban locations in a series of ‘warped reality’ pictures by digital artist Chris Labrooy that were on display throughout the event. Jaguar has also released a short film describing some of the inspiration and detail behind the design of the new Jaguar E-PACE.

In 2015, the brand announced a new approach in the U.S. market with updated pricing and customer care strategies aimed at transforming its presence in the market ahead of launching the Jaguar XE and F-PACE. Since then, Jaguar was the fastest growing automotive brand in 2016 and the F-PACE, as well as the new XE, led to doubling of the Jaguar brand’s annual sales.

Jaguar is now expanding its 2018MY lineup to offer customers an even greater selection of vehicles, including a family of SUV vehicles, sedans and the iconic F-TYPE sports car – all backed with Jaguar EliteCare, an ownership package with five years or 60,000-mile limited warranty, complimentary scheduled maintenance, roadside assistance and Jaguar InControl Protect & Remote.

“Starting with the 2016 Model Year we set out to transform the Jaguar brand in the U.S. which has resulted in steady growth and improving brand health,” said Joe Eberhardt, President & CEO, Jaguar Land Rover North America. “Today, with the addition of three new models, led by the E-PACE SUV, we are writing the next chapter in the modern Jaguar history.”

The new 2018 Jaguar E-PACE is a five-seat compact performance SUV that packs the design and performance of a Jaguar sports car into a practical and connected all-wheel drive vehicle. With sporty design cues and trademark Jaguar driving dynamics, the E-PACE joins the growing Jaguar SUV family alongside the all-electric I-PACE Concept and the F-PACE performance SUV. Pricing for the E-PACE starts from $38,600.

“The Jaguar E-PACE offers the perfect balance between performance, luxury and playfulness, bringing a unique sense of expression to the compact SUV market,” said Ian Callum, Director of Design, Jaguar. “As we continue to expand our Jaguar vehicle portfolio, consumers can expect to have access to new levels of design, performance and engineering across our SUVs, sedans and sports cars.”

The Jaguar XF Sportbrake marks the Jaguar brand’s return to the premium station wagon in the U.S. On sale in late 2017, the XF Sportbrake offers generous interior space and delivers a near perfect 50/50 front-to-rear weight distribution. At launch, it comes powered with the V6 380hp and available in the S trim only. Pricing for the XF Sportbrake S starts from $70,450.

The Jaguar XJR575, the brand’s latest full-size super sedan, continues a heritage of luxurious refinement and interior comfort for Jaguar sedans featuring upgraded performance and unique design touches. With speeds up to 186mph, it has more power than any previous XJ and features a specially tuned 5.0L supercharged V8 engine. Pricing for the 2018 XJR575 starts from $122,400.

The Art of Performance Tour is an award-winning test drive and digital engagement experience that enables consumers to get up close and personal with the latest Jaguar models and star in a sharable short action film, The Audition. At the event, I also got behind the wheel of the Jaguar XF, XE, F-TYPE and F-PACE in a series of driving exercises, all of which were a hoot.

Toyota Tundra with Chief Engineer

TEST DRIVE Toyota Tundra 4X4 SR5 Crewmax has Michigan roots Michigander Mike Sweersis Toyota’s “Truck Whisperer”

My recent test drive of the Toyota Tundra pickup was one of longest road trips we’ve taken in a while – about 1,200 miles from Michigan to Virginia and back. We found the pickup had pleasant road manners and provided a ride quality you’d expect from a large luxury sedan. With a base price starting at $38,470 it was easy to see why this American-made full size pickup is popular in the Midwest – with its engineering roots right here in Southeast Michigan.

At the Toyota Technical Center in York Township, Mike Sweers serves as the chief engineer for both the Tundra and Tacoma. Based right here in Southeastern Michigan, we spokewith him to find out a little more about the life of a chief engineer and what goes into making Toyota trucks.

Exactly what do you do?

“A chief engineer’s responsibility is really the vehicle from the start to the finish of its life cycle. What I mean by that is as we start with the vehicle concept, looking at what the customer wants, needs, desires, and how that vehicle fits into their daily life and how we – as Akio Toyoda would say – make our customer smile. So that involves collecting data from Product Planning, Marketing and other groups.

We meet with evaluation groups so we can understand how a customer would use the vehicle in the segment. Since I’m in charge of trucks, it’s how would a full-sized truck customer use this truck instead of a compact truck customer. What do they do with them? From a daily driver, to weekends, to the guy who goes out and races his truck in the desert or rock climbs.”

So when it starts, you have nothing really?

“It depends. If it’s a brand new concept vehicle or a brand new segment, it’s different. We have to understand what we’re trying to sell. Trucks are a very well established segment. And how you treat that segment or how you break into that segment may be completely different. For Tundra, it’s more of what we call a niche truck. The opposite of that is Tacoma. We are the leader in that segment. And how we approach each vehicle is a little different.”

So what is the difference between a Tundra customer and an F-150 customer?

“A Tundra customer is really buying the truck because they know that truck is going to last. It has the lowest cost of ownership. It has the highest residual value in the market. And that supports the fact that the customer will get a high-quality product.”

What is the design process like?

“As we move into design, we get into daily activities with the engineers. How are we going to put the vehicle together? What combinations go together? We work with TEMA production engineering. We work with purchasing every day, cost planning every day. We need to make sure we’re hitting design targets. And we’re still working with styling, and the goal is that the initial sketch everyone agreed to is what we want to hit. So trying to find new ways of manufacturing and making sure we can still build the product.

What’s important to doing your job well?

To me, the key to being a good chief engineer is to be a customer. So if I have to change the oil, can I get to the oil filter without running oil all over the place? We had a van when my kids were young and I had to make everyone go inside when I’d change the oil on it because it was a 90-minute affair and an hour of that was cleaning up the oil. It would infuriate me, and that’s something I think about. Even when we go down to the plant, one thing I tell our engineers is, “If you wouldn’t want to do that job for eight hours a day, then don’t ask somebody else to do that job.”

2017 Genesis G80(1207)

2017 Genesis G80(1207)

An Automotive Love Affair

By Joe Mavilia

Overview:

This is the 2017 Genesis G80. If you are considering buying a new luxury car like BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, Audi or any other brand, ‘old school luxury cars’, think again about the hottest brand for today. Compare the cost of ownership and that will tell you why I suggest this luxury car option. The other ‘old school’ luxury cars cost a lot to buy and equally bad is that they are NOT cheap to maintain. If you are not stinking rich and have a need to impress others you can stop reading here. However, if you are like 99% of the population you will want to test drive Hyundai and Kia Cars like this Genesis. It’s really just that simple. Wise up. I can say that because my ownership of an automotive repair business in La Canada for several decades was a great lesson on the real world of cars.

Friend Richard has a quote that applies here: “It’s costly wisdom that’s bought by experience, and experience is the name everyone gives their mistakes”.
General Information:

It is assembled in Ulsan, Korea; Parts – US/Canadian 3%, Korea 87%; Engine and transmission – Korea; Classification is Large Cars. Cars from Genesis: G80, G90.

Opinion:

Electric Cars – Bah, humbug – (continued). Well, as a follow up to last week’s look at electric cars and yes I beat up on Tesla and company that would make us believe electric cars is the answer. NOT!

You may recall a couple of columns of discussion of the Hydrogen Fuel Cell option. First, about 10 years ago I test drove GM’s Hi-Wire Fuel Cell concept car. More recently I teamed up with a lessee of a Hydrogen powered SUV and was once again excited about the concept. It is progressing for sure but there are only 34 fueling stations presently. So it won’t be for everyone, but if you must be adventuresome the Hydrogen option is worth the time. At that time the Lease was about $500 a month including all fuel and maintenance.

My point is that in over 100 year’s electric cars have done precious little to improve on the then range of 100 miles.

GM and others have put their hope into Fuel Cell propulsion for good reason. They obviously agree with me that the limitations on battery powered cars is just too great.

Look for a complete discussion on Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology and the cars they power in the near future.

Handling & Performance:

Of course I favor Hyundai and Kia Product in today’s world, because they are great cars. I was high on Japanese cars in the early days (in 1960 I bought a Datsun), but that ship has sailed and it’s old news. You just have to test drive the Korean products and look at the price tag for purchase and then visit dealerships that sell Japanese and German cars. You’ll get a pretty good idea who pays for all that fluff.

All those high-performance cars listed as competition get 20-21 mpg average combined numbers, because it’s hard to keep your foot under control. Cars like this are exhilarating to drive. Nice.

Styling:

Lovely. New. Exciting.

Fit and Finish:

Outstanding.

Cost:

Affordable

Conveniences and comfort:

All the bells and whistles of those other guys.

Consumer Recommendations:

Take my advice. Try ‘em, you’ll like ‘em. I might add the Hyundai and Kia warranties are among the best on the market. The new kid on the block has to try harder and they have come a long way in the past two decades.

Recognized Competition:

Genesis G80 $56,000, Kia K900 $23,000, Cadillac CT6 $56,000, Cadillac XTS $56,000.

Others from Germany and Japan for comparative value: BMW 6 Series $92,000, Audi A6 $62,000, Lexus LS $80,000, Mercedes Benz GLS $68,000.

Good News:

Fun, fast, luxurious class act that is priced well and great warranties.

2018 Jaguar F-Type Coupe

Test Drive:

2018 Jaguar F-Type Coupe

By Vince Bodiford

Jaguar brand conveys the idea of vehicles that are beautiful and fast – and the 2018 Jaguar F-Type delivers that promise. Photos by JAGUAR.

English exotic is a thrill to drive

The name Jaguar itself spurs the imagination and brings to mind the storied cars of today and yesterday wearing that brand – cars that are beautiful and fast. From the earliest days to today, we expect our senses to be overwhelmed behind the wheel or riding in any Jaguar. The 2018 Jaguar F-Type dishes that out in no small measure. Available in closed coupe and convertible, we chose the open-air ragtop for this test. Bottom line: it’s a pure thrill to drive.

This is not an every-day high volume car, but rather a very specialized machine that is much like putting on your Sunday best or finest watch for a special occasion. It that realm, it is indeed automotive jewelry.

Already recognized as the most dynamically capable and performance-oriented Jaguar, the F-TYPE sports car continues to evolve for 2018, with a fresh look, new powertrain options and the addition of standard technology features previously unavailable.

VEHICLE HIGHLIGHTS:

MSRP starting at $59,990 plus shipping and fees.

(Easily optioned-up to over $100k).

Fuel economy estimates range from 20-mpg city to 28-mpg highway.

Built by Jaguar Land Rover in England.

Vehicle Highs: Beautiful and Fast. Instantly recognizable as a Jaguar. Throaty exhaust note.

Vehicle Lows: Interior is a bit tight. Some center controls are out of easy driver reach.

Top Rivals: Any luxury high-performance coupe, especially the Corvette Stingray and Porsche 911.

Since its launch in 2012, the all-aluminum two-seater has firmly established itself as a strong competitor in its sports car segment and has won nearly 160 awards worldwide. The balance of seductive design, stunning performance and outstanding dynamics has always made the F-TYPE unique.

For the 2018 model year the F-TYPE offers more driver-focused technologies and a broader model range; now comprising of 24 derivatives that include an all-new turbocharged 296-hp Ingenium four-cylinder entry model, a number of supercharged V6 options and even the 200mph, all-wheel drive 575 hp V8 powered F-TYPE SVR.

“Great sports car design is about proportion and purity,” said Ian Callum, Director of Design, Jaguar. “For the F-TYPE, we looked at how we could fine-tune key details to deliver even more clarity of purpose in the overall design – for the driver, the passenger and onlookers.” No doubt, with this car those goals were achieved.

Like the exterior, the interior of the 2018 F-TYPE, evolves into a purer, more concentrated expression of the car’s original elegance and sportiness. The Jaguar interior design team focused on refining a handful of key elements to create a greater sense of harmony in the finishes, enhance the sense of balance between luxury and performance, and to introduce new material options that give the car a more exotic feel.

From day one the F-TYPE has been engineered to provide outstanding agility and response without compromising the day-to-day usability and ride comfort expected from all Jaguar cars.

“We wanted the power and efficiency of the new four-cylinder engine to be matched by levels of responsiveness that would make the F-TYPE driving experience even more engaging and rewarding,” said Mike Cross, Chief Engineer, Vehicle Integrity, Jaguar Land Rover. “The result of the intensive development process is an even better balance, an even more connected feel, and enhanced ride comfort. Enthusiasts will want to drive this car: this is a true F-TYPE, with its own unique character.”

The objectives of the Jaguar vision for the F-TYPE have been very well put to metal and leather for 2018, the result quickens the pulse and warms the heart all at once.

Lastly, let’s clear up how the name is pronounced. Jaguar is said “Jag-you-are,” not “Jag,” or worse, “Jag-wire.” You say the word Jaguar with a pronounced English accent – which as it turns out, is exactly how the car is made. It is very English.

2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid Ltd

2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid Ltd

An Automotive Love Affair

By Joe Mavilia

Overview:

This is the 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid Ltd. To sum up all information below, this is a not-to-miss option in your search for a good replacement for that worn-out car in your driveway. If your budget for transportation is stressed, this Ioniq will be a welcomed relief.

General Information: It is assembled in Ulsan, Korea; Parts – US/Canadian 1%, Korea 85%; Engine and transmission – Korea; Classification is Large Cars. Cars from Hyundai: Accent, Azera, Elantra, Elantra GT, Equus, Ioniq, Santa Fe, Sonata, Sonata Hybrid, Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid, Tucson and Veloster.

Opinion:

Electric Cars – Bah, humbug. I must repeat my disdain for electric only cars. Do a little research and you’ll find that over 100 years ago, electric cars had a range of 100 miles. Of all the electric cars I’ve tested over the past 25 years they have not improved on that century old fact. The conclusion is, as GM has agreed, going down that Electric (only) propulsion system, road is not likely to bear good fruit.

Not only is today’s average range 100 miles, the frustration of planning a simple trip to the finding many hours and even days to fully charge those batteries. Ok, so you say what about Tesla. What about it? Just because they have a lot of money, you will have to pay up to $140,000 for the very expensive banks of batteries and still only get about 200-mile range. And you will always be sweating running out of charge as you climb uphill and watch the needle plunge perilously.

Handling & Performance:

This Ioniq is one of the best examples of the use of Hybrid technology. The power is so seamless it is nearly undetectable that it is, in fact, a hybrid. It was with reluctance that I felt I had to add gas as it just ran and ran and ran. Back and forth from Pasadena to Acton (100 miles) and then off to San Diego (200 miles down and back) for a little R&R (rest and relaxation) I knew the range was dependable. We were 4 total passengers and all our luggage and it purred like a kitten.

Styling:

Very Hyundai in look and is becoming more recognizable as it pops up on the highway like mushrooms in a moist forest. It is for good reason – just ask any owner and they will agree with me that it is still one of the best buys on the market – and good looking all at the same time.

Fit and Finish:

Very good.

Cost:

Very Competitive in class.

Conveniences and comfort:

I’d prefer to be able to afford a Genesis, but for the economy afforded by this Ioniq, it is hard to beat all the comforts and features for the money.

Consumer Recommendations:

I give this a big encouraging rating of 10 – mostly because gas is always at a premium and can be a huge part of our budgets – Yours and mine. I hate ‘electric’ cars, as noted above, BUT, Hydrogen cars are still in development and eventually will win the war of technology, in my view. 10 years ago, I tested GM’s Hydrogen car and was promised it would be on the market in 5 years. Wasn’t going to happen, but it will. In the meantime, Hybrid is the best option and this Hyundai is surely at the top of my list of recommendations.

Recognized Competition:

Hyundai Ioniq $23,000, Toyota Prius C $23,000, Kia Niro $24,000, Toyota Prius Prime $28,000.

Good News:

One of the hottest products on the market, great fuel economy, priced well.

Bad News:

Standard Equipment:

1.6 liter gas injection 4-cylinder hybrid engine, 139 HP hybrid system power, permanent magnet synchronous motor (32KW), 240 V Lithium-ion Polymer Battery & hybrid starter generator, 6-speed Eco dual clutch automatic transmission, stability management and traction controls, 4-wheel ABS electronic with Brake force distribution and brake assist, with integrated regenerative braking, Blind spot detection with rear cross traffic alert and Lane Change Assist, rearview camera, front, side and side curtain airbags and driver knee airbag, 17” Eco-spoke alloy wheels, high intensity headlights, LED daytime running lights and LED taillights, power tilt and slide sunroof, proximity key entry with push button start, 7” LCD instrument cluster display, climate control and heated front seats, leather seating, with power driver’s seat with lumbar support, 60/40 split folding rear seat with rear center armrest, 7” color touchscreen audio display, AM/FM/MP3 audio system with iPod USB and Auxiliary input jacks, HD radio technology, Sirius XM, Android Auto and Apple car Play integration, BlueLink telematics system, Blue link connected care and remote package, emergency tire puncture repair kit in lieu of spare tire.

2018 Dodge Ram Harvest Edition

Ram celebrates agricultural bonds with a new model designed for America’s farm families, with special colors and features.

2018 Dodge Ram Harvest Edition

New pickup offers first special farm package

Vince Bodiford

Dodge has introduced a new Ram pickup, The Ram Harvest Edition, which is the first agricultural market-specific truck and is visually distinguished by two new colors: Case IH Red and New Holland Blue. Like those tractors, pickups are the workhorse of the ag industry.

“The Ram Harvest Edition marks the first time that Ram dealers will be able to stock trucks that exactly match the colors of two of the most popular lines of farm equipment in the nation,” said Mike Manley, Head of Jeep & Ram Brands. “Farmers have been asking for these colors, and Ram is proud to be the first in the industry to be able to offer them. The Ram Harvest Edition truck will allow farm families to get their work done while proudly showing their agricultural brand loyalty.”

The Harvest Edition is available across the Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 lineup, in all four-door Quad, Crew and Mega Cab configurations, all box lengths and all powertrains, including 5.7-liter HEMI V-8, 6.4-liter HEMI V-8 and 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel.

Harvest Edition trucks offer features that are designed to work. Among them, a ride-height increase of one inch and aggressive on/off-road tires on Ram 1500 Harvest Edition trucks are designed to help owners comfortably and confidently navigate rough farm roads and pastures.

Also included in the farm-life essentials are black tubular side steps, a durable spray-in bedliner, fold-out bumper step and mud flaps, rubber floor mats, skid plates and tow hooks (4×4) and heated seats. Ram Heavy Duty models also come with on/off-road tires and add a cargo-view camera.

Because Ram knows farmers are tech savvy, the Harvest Edition comes standard with an 8.4-inch Uconnect 4C touchscreen radio with navigation, 4G Wifi, Apple Car Play and Android Auto, which gives buyers seamless connectivity, fingertip access to smartphone map mirroring, and up-to-the minute weather maps and forecasts customizable to any location in the nation.

The Harvest Edition features a premium exterior appearance packed with bright highlights, including a chrome “Wave Mesh” luxury cross-hair grille, bright front and rear bumpers, 17-inch chrome wheels (1500 models, 18-inch polished aluminum on Heavy Duty models), chrome mirrors, chrome door handles and chrome-tipped dual exhausts (V-8 1500 models).

The Harvest package also includes body-color (or Bright Silver) wheel flares and upper facia (1500). In addition to Case Red and New Holland Blue, Harvest Edition Ram trucks are also available in Bright White and Brilliant Black. Monotone and two-tone with Bright Silver color schemes are available.

Ram 1500 Harvest Edition MSRP starts at $39,910, plus $1,395 destination charge. Ram Heavy Duty models start at $46,235.

Ram Harvest Edition trucks were unveiled today at the Farm Progress Show in Decatur, Illinois, and go on sale in the third quarter of 2017.

The Ram Certified Agriculture Dealership program equips dealers to properly address the needs of farmers and ranchers in their local communities. Monroe Dodge in Monroe is the first dealership to be certified in Michigan, and one of fewer than 200 in the nation.

Ralph Mahalak Jr. of the Monroe dealership said the program educated them more on serving that industry. He said “agriculture is meaningful to many truck customers and through the Ram Certified Agriculture Dealership program, Monroe Dodge extends its commitment to the local agricultural community by equipping us to serve local farmers and ranchers.”

Certified dealers like Monroe Dodge help farmers and ranchers get the right Ram light-duty, heavy-duty and commercial trucks for their needs and help them take advantage of incentives and bonus offers, including a farm-specific package worth more than $5,300.

2017 Mazda CX 5 Grand Touring AWD

An Automotive Love Affair

By Joseph Mavilia

Overview:

This is the 2017 Mazda CX 5 Grand Touring AWD. Right off the bat I had a problem. I was traveling down the 210 Freeway toward Pasadena, CA when “BAM” the driver side rear tire blew out. I was surprised since that hadn’t ever happened in nearly 25 years of testing cars on and off the race track as well as on and off road. There was nothing unusual in road conditions so I could only conclude it was a tire failure.

Ok, so the tires were Toyo brand and I’m wondering if it were just a fluke or it had something to do with quality issues of the brand? Is there a tire expert out there to comment?

When I think of it, I have rarely had tire failures any time in my life with the exception of the early days when “Re-Caps” were in demand to save money. They did tend to fail often. But I have, when I could afford better tires, leaned to or preferred US brands like Good Year or Firestone. Bridgestone also has a good reputation.

Looking forward to your comments. Write me at joe@autolove.com.

Design styling is rather commonplace, but that is meant in the good sense of the word. I’ve never been a fan of Flashy rather than practical and thus clean and simple lines. Kind of the way I prefer the women in my life. You just can’t improve on what God made, if you get my drift.

Fit and Finish:

Very well assembled consistent with overall quality.

Cost:

Affordable and very competitive in class.

Conveniences and comfort:

Outstanding array of great safety features that are a MUST in today’s world.

Consumer Recommendations:

Mazda is a must-see product in class as it has always been super competitive.

2017 Jeep Renegade Deserthawk 4X4

2017 Jeep Renegade Deserthawk 4X4

An Automotive Love Affair

By Joseph Mavilia

Overview:

This is the 2017 Jeep Renegade Deserthawk 4X4. I’ve been looking to revisit and review all Jeeps because I have a personal reason – I’m looking to buy one. I’m looking more to the Wrangler to tow behind a motorhome. If you have experience with that application your thoughts would be appreciated.

In the meantime, this new DesertHawk keeps with the tradition of the Jeep image. I have attended “Jeep Camps” and “Jeep Jamborees” and that has influenced my decision to renew my opinion of the product and is why it fits into my travel plans..

General Information:

It is assembled in Melfi, Italy. Parts – US/Canadian 22%, Italy 62%, Engine and Transmission – USA; Classification is Small SUV. Cars from Jeep: Cherokee, Compass, Grand Cherokee, Patriot, Renegade, Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited.

Handling & Performance:

Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words and on my Jeep Jamboree in Northwest Massachusetts on the Mohawk Trail I found this picture explains what is possible because I did it.

Styling:

Jeep stayed true to what make Jeep a classic all the way from WWII military days up to today and it remains an image of can-do and wanna do.

Fit and Finish:

Built for the out of doors so it is necessarily basic and as good as it needs to be.

Cost:

2017 MSRP of this Renegade is under $27,000.

Conveniences and comfort:

For the road ahead, it has many more features than necessary for the rough and tumble guys and gals who choose the out-of-doors lifestyle. But it incorporates most of the mechanical safety features that will give added safety to operation and keep the average driver out of trouble.

Consumer Recommendation:

I always recommend that you consider attending one of the 26 venues around the country where they hold Jeep Jamboree’s. They are rated according to level of difficulty of the venue from 1 to 10, where 10 is the most difficult. Visit the link for more – https://jeepjamboreeusa.com/tripsregister/

… and for real action try this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5AWZvB1FuU

Most people will likely never be in the most difficult venue like Rubicon (10) but the video will give you an idea of what these Jeep’s can actually do.

Recognized Competition:

Jeep Renegade $28,000 (Italy), Chevrolet Trax $28,000 (Canada), Fiat 500X $28,000 (Italy), Nissan Juke $28,000 (Japan), Honda HR-V $27,000 (Mexico), Mazda CX-3 $27,000 (Japan).

TEST DRIVE

2017 Nissan Rogue Compact SUV

By Vince Bodiford

Driving the Nissan Rogue, it is easy to notice and appreciate many mid-year improvements on the already popular compact crossover SUV. Nissan’s top selling vehicle in the U.S, it received extensive enhancements for the 2017 model year – creating what Nissan says is the most efficient, convenient and confidence-inspiring Rogue ever. Now Rogue offers a number of additional enhancements for mid-year.

The major revisions to the second-generation Rogue are highlighted by updated styling, convenience, NVH refinements, technology and safety features. In addition, Rogue Hybrid, featuring the first-ever hybrid powertrain for Rogue, boosts estimated fuel economy to 33 city – an increase of up to seven mpg over non-hybrid Rogue models.

VEHICLE HIGHLIGHTS:

MSRP starting at $23,820

Offers: Active offers for August, see Nissan dealer for details.

2.5-liter EFI engine.

Xtronic Automatic Transmission

Fuel economy estimates range from 26-mpg city to 33-mpg highway.

Vehicle Highs: Improved fuel economy, larger cargo area and useful storage, improved interior.

Vehicle Lows: Would benefit from a bit more power, transmission is bit noisy on hard acceleration.

Vehicle Rivals: All compact crossover SUVs, especially Toyota RAV4, Honda CRV.

Exterior features include a new front end design with Nissan signature design cues, available Motion-Activated liftgate, and new available Safety Shield technologies such as Intelligent Cruise Control and Forward Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection.

Among the interior enhancements found in the refreshed Rogue are a D-shaped steering wheel and leather-booted sport-mode shifter, and available heated steering wheel, memory for driver’s seats and mirror, and remote engine start. The result is a premium look and feel throughout the roomy Rogue cabin.

Adding a new sense of luxury to Rogue, the Platinum Reserve Interior Package is highlighted by premium tan leather-appointed seats with special quilted leather inserts. It is available on Rogue SL models only.

The new for this year is the Midnight Edition treatment that includes black 17-inch Midnight Edition aluminum-alloy wheels, black mirror caps and available Midnight Edition floor mats. It also adds black roof rails, black cross bars, black splash guards, rear bumper protector and illuminated kick plates.

Rogue offers optional 3-row/7-passenger seating, along with great passenger and cargo flexibility with its EZ Flex Seating System, and Divide-N-Hide Cargo System. The cargo system provides 18 adjustable variations between the cargo and occupant areas (two-row models) and creates a flat cargo area with the 2nd row seat folded down. When more space is needed for carrying taller or bulkier items, lowering the floor board creates a deeper cargo well.

The Rogue Hybrid utilizes Nissan’s Intelligent Dual Clutch system. It uses a compact Lithium-ion battery and electric motor to provide supplementary power through its one-motor/two-clutch system. The first of the two clutches is a dry clutch installed between the 4-cylinder engine and the electric motor. The system also includes an Idle Start/Stop system.

The Rogue Hybrid’s 2.0-liter engine and 30kW electric motor, connected to the advanced Xtronic transmission, produces fuel economy of up to 33 mpg city, 35 mpg highway and 34 mpg combined for front-wheel drive models.

The Rogue Hybrid has a net system horsepower rating of 176 hp. This compares to 170 horsepower for the standard Rogue model’s 2.5-liter internal combustion engine.

Both powertrains are matched with an Xtronic transmission with Sport and Eco Mode switches. Also standard are Vehicle Dynamic Control and 4-wheel disc brakes with Anti-lock Braking System. The Rogue is available with an All-Wheel Drive system or front-wheel drive.

Available Rogue technology features include NissanConnectSM with Navigation, Mobile Apps, and Services, with 7.0-inch color touch-screen display, Nissan Voice Recognition for navigation and audio, SiriusXM Travel Link and SiriusXM Traffic Around View Monitor with Moving Object Detection, radar-based Blind Spot Warning and Intelligent Cruise Control, and Forward Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection.

Rogue is offered in three well-equipped gasoline engine-equipped grade levels, and two for the hybrid. Rogue is assembled in Smyrna, Tennessee, Kyushu, Japan and Busan, Korea.

THE VERDICT

A bit more expensive than its rivals, the Rogue makes up for it in content and fresh styling. It is a strong contender in the compact import crossover SUV segment.
