2017 Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid Ltd.

An Automotive Love Affair

By Joe Mavilia

Overview:

This is the 2017 Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid Ltd. I support Hybrid technology in today’s world. But I cannot buy the hype about “All-electric” battery powered cars. I must remind you of a bit of history. In 1903 all electric cars were available and they provided a range of 100 miles. That technology has made very modest improvement in a staggering 120 years. That tells me Tesla and others are on the wrong track with All Electric propulsion.

Consider that when you make short trips or around town All electric works fine, but not if you must go over 25 miles, remembering you must go back home another 25 miles. I have been stranded commuting 50 miles, charging all day and not being able to get back home. You see, home was uphill and that draws a huge amount of current.

The hype Tesla makes has been bought by many. Recall in late October 2016, Elon Musk made the bold prediction that his fleet of Tesla vehicles would pick someone up from their residence in Los Angeles, and drop them off in New York without the need for a single charge, and that would be done by the end of 2017. Many were skeptical about his claim, but Musk was confident since his Tesla vehicle was planned to be outfitted with powerful sensors, an updated computer system, GPS, and inertial measurement unit to aid in object detection. All Model S, X, and 3 sedans were predicted to include this updated technology. However, the CEO has walked back this prediction. In early August 2017, Musk lowered expectations by delaying the cross-country road trip.

Hybrids work today but all electric is doubtful to take over any time soon. On the other hand, you may recall my review of Fuel Cell hydrogen cars. It is still exciting and has a chance of making electric powered cars practical. If you attended the LA Auto Show this year you had a chance to see the technology up close. Be wise in how you spend your hard-earned money. Hybrid will be solid for the next 20 years. Then? beam me up Scotty.

General Information:

Handling & Performance:

I did not use a plug-in cable but the charge maintained at ¼ capacity in normal driving conditions for the entire week – because I had a gas engine. I experienced 300 miles travel using only ½ tank of gas. Had I plugged in at night to charge the batteries that performance would have been far better. Impressive. This technology has my vote.

Very nice, clean neat lines.

Very good.

2018 Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 T SE

2018 Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 T SE

An Automotive Love Affair

By Joe Mavilia

Overview:

This is the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 T SE. What is hard to believe is that 2018 came quickly in the blink of an eye. I was just getting used to 2017 and haven’t had time to get through reviews of that year and here we go again. The good news is for the consumer who can find deals on new 2017’s to make room for the 2018 models.

Christmas is just around the corner and a perfect time to kick off the new year by adding a VW to your driveway. The Tiguan is simply a cool car – perfect size for today’s usual needs, for most folks. It has good utility / Cargo area and alternatively a 4-door 5-seater for moving people. To my son – Sorry, it isn’t big enough for your 5 kids. Who does that any more anyway?

Enter Lincoln Navigator, Mercedes Benz GLS-Class, Toyota Land Cruiser, Infiniti QX80, Land Rover Range Rover, Lexus LX, Cadillac Escalade and Dodge Durango. These range in cost around $70 to 130,000. . . so much for “Cheaper by the Dozen”.

General Information:

It is assembled in – Puebla, Mexico; Parts – US/Canadian 11%, Mexico 43%; Germany 16%, Engine – Mexico, Transmission – Japan; Classification is Small SUV. Cars from Volkswagen: Atlas, Beetle, CC, e-Golf, Golf, Golf Alltrack, Golf Gti, Golf R, Golf Sportswagen, Jetta, Passat, Tiguan & Touareg.

Handling & Performance:

An absolute delight to drive.

Styling:

Classic VW styling of course.

Fit and Finish:

Excellent.

Cost:

Some would say these competitors are colluding on the pricing. Of course, that would be illegal, under Antitrust Laws of the land. More likely, in my experience, CAD (Computer Aided Design) systems are either exactly or so close to the same, you can expect car makers will come up with the same costs.

Conveniences and comfort:

This has to-be one of the more impressive small SUV’s you will drive. It is noticeably very comfy and overall a very nice car to drive.

Consumer Recommendations:

I absolutely can see myself owning this car. I enjoyed the week’s travels which means being in the seat for over 100 miles a day. If you are an out-of-doors kind of guy or gal, this is a great option for the active life. Be sure to take it for a spin and you’ll see what I mean.

2017 Audi A3 Sedan 2.0T Quattro S tronic

2017 Audi A3 Sedan 2.0T Quattro S tronic

An Automotive Love Affair

By Joe Mavilia

Overview:

This is the 2017 Audi A3 Sedan 2.0T Quattro S tronic. Merry Christmas – you gotta wonder how many lucky folks will find an Audi under their tree. Suppose your kids asked you what car you thought they should buy – what would you suggest?

Likely most every parent would tell them to do what is best for them. Also, most people, not only youth, lean toward Flashy or high-performance cars…

Well, there is no question that German and Italian high-end Luxury cars are engineering marvels. They are fabulously fun (thrilling) to drive but practically speaking they are designed and built for the very well healed – financially.

If your budget resembles young college students or young families and even yours or mine you may want to tread lightly and cautiously when considering whether this kind of Luxury car will be your choice. I was thrilled when my kids opted for Hyundai, Kia, Chevy and Chrysler. Just say’n it is best to spend wisely and keep your hard-earned money in your bank account for that inevitable rainy day.

General Information:

It is assembled in Gyor, Hungary; Parts – US/Canadian 1%, Hungary 37%, Germany 57%; Engine – Hungary and transmission – Germany; Classification is Subcompact. Cars from Audi: A3 Cabriolet, A3 Sedan, A3 Sportback e-tron, A4, A5 Cabriolet, A5 Coupe, A5 Sportback, A6, A7, A8, Allroad, Q3, Q5, Q7, R8, RS 3, RS 5, RS 5 Cabriolet, RS 7, S3, S4, S5, S5 Cabriolet, S5 Coupe, S5 Sportback, S6, S7, S8, SQ5, TT Coupe, TT Roadster, TT RS and TTS Coupe.

Handling & Performance:

Unquestionably exceptional.

Styling:

Unmistakable Audi.

Fit and Finish:

Among the best.

Cost:

Yes, Audi, like most German luxury cars are far more expensive to buy and operate than other choices, but it is also true they are exceptionally fabulous cars to drive. But your budget is what determines at the end of the day.

It is not a bad thing that these cars are pricey. Just be aware of this fact. As an owner of an automotive repair business for many years I can say this with confidence. It’s simply a fact you need to consider. Ferrari and Lamborghini are not for everyone and that is common sense and a place where you enter at your own risk. High end Japanese and German and Italian cars are simply expensive. Exceptional engineering comes at a high price. Oh, by the way, we did drive Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche cars, but it helps when you own a repair facility.

Conveniences and comfort:

A good complement of standard features. However, you must pop for about $9,000 if you want all the high-tech features becoming more commonplace in today’s competitive world. . . many of which are standard on many, even lesser luxury classed auto products. Things like ‘lane assist, cross traffic, side assist, adaptive cruise control, Navigation, etc., you’ll pay extra for here.

Good News:

Excellent engineering for exceptional handling and performance.

Bad News:

German luxury car high cost of purchase and maintenance.

Standard Equipment:

2.0 liter Turbo 220 hp 4 cylinder engine, 6-speed auto transmission, all-wheel-drive (Quattro), 17” wheels, 4-wheel ABS power disc brakes, stability control, speed sensitive power steering, keyless push button start/stop system, tire pressure monitor, Audi concert radio sound system, xenon headlights, dual zone climate control, information system , leather seating, sunroof, heated power mirrors, Bluetooth prepared, rain and light sensors, rearview camera, multifunction steering wheel, Aux-in with USB charge, 8-way power driver seat, front, knee, thorax side and side curtain airbags, LATCH children system with safety locks, anti-theft alarm system.

2017 Nissan Rogue SL Hybrid AWD

An Automotive Love Affair
By Joe Mavilia

Overview:

This is the 2017 Nissan Rogue SL Hybrid AWD. It is, for me, a very strong contender in class because Nissan has been a favorite of mine for many years. The only bias I’m inclined to is to buy American. I like the Denali, but the Rogue is a Hybrid and the fuel economy gives it a decided edge. It also has a fantastic array of standard features for the money.

2018 Kia Soul Crossover

Kia Soul is a unique shape on the road. Inside, it’s hip and functional at the same time. Photos by Kia

By Vince Bodiford

Kia brings back the hamsters to promote popular model

If you go inside major automotive manufacturing facilities – including all brands built in the North America and imports – one thing that stands out is that regardless of the car being made, Kia makes the machines being used by the people making those cars. Automation and machine systems of every kind are made by Kia for use by every manufacturer to build their cars.

Although relatively new to the American market since its introduction in 1994, Kia Motors has been in the transportation business for some time now producing Korea’s first domestically made bicycle in 1951. Skillfully devised, highly functional and affordable describe the company’s products. The new Kia Soul is all of that and more.

In an era of “all cars look alike” the Kia Soul by no means looks like anything on the road – except for another Kia Soul. That is important to many carbuyers who are seeking a departure from the cookie-cutter SUV and crossover choices. Kia Soul is a very unique design and character that is edgy, youthful and sporty.

The 2018 Kia Soul enters its fifth model year as a carryover with minor enhancements. Kia’s iconic urban passenger vehicle offers a fun, funky and functional approach to everyday driving. From a quality standpoint, Soul has ranked #1 in the J.D Power Initial Quality Study in its category for three consecutive years.

Made famous by those forward thinking Kia hamster commercials, we were all introduced to the Soul by a brand campaign that paired it with hip-hop and pop music and an energetic vibe thus giving the Soul instantaneous “cool.” The 2018 Kia Soul has a turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine which is spunky and fun to drive. Our test car came in the Wild Orange exterior hue, which was bright and exuded emotion, and coupled with the 18″ Alloy wheels our Kia Soul was definitely our style.

Kia Soul’s handling, braking and overall maneuverability were excellent for a boxy package. As expected with a short wheelbase, the Soul is afforded the ability of fitting in tight parking spaces which is essential to city driving and commuting. While others hunted endlessly for parking spots to accommodate their vehicles I was able to quickly get in and out without a worry.

More importantly, the Soul’s rectangular silhouette makes cargo issues almost non-existent. The interior was surprisingly spacious and had no problem accommodating me and passengers with plenty of leg and headroom. Not only was the vehicle comfortable and convenient, it was well-packaged in part to the optional panoramic sunroof, infotainment center (simple and intuitive) and the Technology Package which offered the pleasure of navigation with an 8″ display. SiriusXM was enjoyable as always since it was paired with a Harman Kardon premium audio system that comes with the Technology Package. Energy vibrates in tandem with speaker lights which respond to your musical vibes or can be set as mood lighting.

All these features are icing on the cake when you consider that the 2017 Soul is also equipped with Blind Spot Detection, heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, Traction Control, Electronic Stability Control and Vehicle Stability Management. The touchscreen display was reactive and far from sluggish as I moved seamlessly between functions at a whim. USB charging and connectivity ports are abundant for your personal tech devices. It’s amazing that a value car can tender some of the same features found on premium luxury vehicles.

The 2018 Kia Soul is an enticing financial decision with a starting price of $16,100 for the base car. Nicely equipped, our test vehicle was priced at $27,620. It is also available in an all-electric plug-in EV model.

2018 Chevrolet Silverado Anniversary Pickup

Chevy celebrates truck centennial with special edition

2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the first production Chevrolet truck. A century and more than 85 million trucks later, Chevrolet has become one of the most recognizable brands in the world. To celebrate the Chevy Trucks Centennial, the brand is honoring the owners who have made Chevy Trucks a part of their lives for the past century with a celebration featuring two new Special Edition trucks, the national rollout of the Truck Legends customer loyalty program and more.

To see how far the trucks have come over the years, this week road-tested a new Silverado High Country 4WD crew-cab pickup. It is the best-driving pickup from Chevy that I’ve ever tested. With double-cab pricing that starts at $28,085 and MPG estimates ranging from 18-mpg to 24-mpg, it gets high marks for towing and hauling. This truck even offers WiFi and GPS navigation – features that were the stuff of science fiction when the first Chevy trucks hit the road 100 years ago.

The 1918 Chevrolet One-Ton truck was powered by a four-cylinder engine rated at 36 horsepower. Its top speed was 25 mph. Today, there are three engine choices and a range of models, cab sizes, and bed choices.

“The Chevy Trucks Centennial is a huge milestone for us, and is equally important to our customers,” said Sandor Piszar, Chevrolet Trucks Advertising and Marketing director. “That’s why we are celebrating 100 years of Chevy Trucks. It’s important that we share this celebration with our loyal customers who have helped us achieve this accomplishment.”

From the beginning, Chevrolet Trucks has focused on making the best possible vehicle to meet every customer’s needs. After building specialized trucks to serve its factory, Chevrolet introduced its first trucks to customers in 1918. They included the half-ton Light Delivery and the 1918 One-Ton truck. Both were offered with an open chassis behind the windshield that allowed customers to choose between purchasing or building a specialized body for their vocation.

A century later, customer choice continues to drive Chevy Trucks. Chevrolet is still the only manufacturer to offer customers a three-truck portfolio — featuring the Colorado, Silverado and Silverado HD — and a full line of special editions, giving customers more options for the perfect truck to fit their needs and personal style.

The latest additions to the Chevrolet Trucks portfolio of special editions, the 2018 Silverado and Colorado Centennial Editions feature design elements inspired by Chevy Trucks throughout history, including a distinctive Centennial Blue paint color and exclusive heritage bowtie emblems and 100 year badges inspired by colors and design cues found on early Chevrolet Trucks.

“The Silverado and Colorado Centennial Editions are a result of collaboration between Chevrolet Design, Engineering and Marketing, to commemorate the history of Chevy Trucks,” said Rich Scheer, Chevrolet Trucks director of Exterior Design. “Both vehicles offer our most enthusiastic fans a way to demonstrate their love for Chevy Trucks and celebrate the Chevy Trucks Centennial with us.”

2017 Nissan Armada Platinum 4WD

An Automotive Love Affair
By Joseph Mavilia

Overview:

This is the 2017 Nissan Armada Platinum 4WD. The last time I reviewed an Armada was in South Carolina for a golf outing with a group of friends. When you have 4 guys with luggage and golf bags you need a large vehicle. Armada fit the bill – just dandy.

Today the Armada remains large despite some who think no one should be allowed to drive such large cars… it just isn’t politically correct they tell me. Really, there are also some who think everyone should drive electric cars or at the very least “Green”. Time will bear out what is the most efficient mode of transportation. Who knows it may be ‘tele transporting and we won’t need cars at all. In any case, a free market is the best way to determine the matter best. Only few will choose the least efficient way to do anything.

As to Electric Technology I remind you that in 1903 electric cars performed as well as today’s electric cars. What does that tell you? Pursuing that technology appears a path going nowhere.

So, when you need a large vehicle I trust you will chose the best one for the need. And the next time I have a large group with golf clubs and luggage you can bet it won’t be in a Prius.

With 22 models of Nissan you should be able to find something that fits your want or need.

Opinion:

Everyone has one (an opinion), so voice yours – it’s your constitutional right in America and not so much everywhere else in the world. How’s that for UNIQUE, especially since America only represents 5% of the world population. God bless America. Go ahead, speak up, speak out – That’s my opinion. What’s yours?

General Information: It is assembled in Los Angeles, CA. Classification is Standard SUV. Cars from Nissan: Altima, Armada, Frontier, GT-R, JUKE, LEAF, Maxima, Murano, NV Cargo, NV Passenger, NV 200, Pathfinder, Quest, Rogue, Rogue Sport, Sentra, Titan, Titan XD, Versa Note, Versa Sedan, 370 Z Coupe and 370 Z Roadster.

Handling & Performance:

Special for a large car / SUV. It performed spectacularly during my “over-the-Crest” Test mountain curvy road route.

Styling:

Armada hasn’t changed much over the past years, and that is fine with me.

Fit and Finish:

Nice, very nice.

Cost:

You get what you pay for, so if you need a large SUV for lots of folks, kids, dogs, cats, soccer teams or golf buddies this Armada should be on your shopping list.

Conveniences and comfort:

If there is something else you can think of that you need in an automobile, like the kitchen sink I’m sure they can add it for you. Yep, if it had any more features you’d call it HOME.

Consumer Recommendations:

We all have our favorite car makers so perhaps the following information could be helpful. Oh, if you will be hauling 7 or 8 people buy LARGE – it will take as many as 7 cars off the road.

2018 Chevrolet Traverse

The 2018 Chevrolet Traverse is noticeably longer than prior model, inside easily accommodates third row passengers. Chevrolet Photo.

Newly styled and longer model ‘hits the sweet spot’

Introduced earlier this year and arriving at dealer showrooms now, the all-new Chevrolet Traverse fits nicely between the smaller Equinox and the full-size Tahoe. It’s in that medium-sized “sweet spot” for many SUVs, and this one offers great fuel economy and an available third row seat – all in a package that starts at $30,975.

Wrapped in bold and refined styling, the redesigned Traverse offers technologies to help keep passengers of all ages and lifestyles comfortable and connected. For our test drive this week, the Traverse spoiled us with comfort and content. Traverse delivered nicely with great third-row legroom, maximum cargo room and passenger volume.

“The all-new Traverse offers the ultimate in style and convenience for the segment, with the versatility customers need and a thoughtful, spacious design they’ll love,” said Alan Batey, president of GM North America and brand chief, Global Chevrolet. “It’s the midsize SUV designed to help keep you safe, comfortable and connected.”

The 2018 Traverse is the fourth updated crossover or SUV from Chevrolet within a year, joining the Trax, Bolt EV and 2018 Equinox, further strengthening the brand’s crossover and SUV lineup. Traverse estimated fuel economy ranges from 18-mpg to 27-mpg.

“Nobody in the industry offers a broader, fresher lineup of SUVs and crossovers than Chevrolet,” said Batey. “From the all-electric Bolt EV to America’s longest-running nameplate, Suburban, we’ve got something for every customer and lifestyle.”

The 2018 Traverse has a new look inspired by Chevrolet’s full-size SUVs, with purposeful proportions complemented by premium cues such as chrome accents, LED signature lighting and available D-Optic LED headlamps.
Chevrolet is adding two new trim levels for the 2018 Traverse — the sporty RS and luxurious High Country — to offer customers more choices for a personalized appearance.

The new RS package includes unique, blacked-out exterior cues with a black chrome grille, black bowtie, 20-inch wheels and more.

The High Country trim features premium content and technology, including a unique interior trim featuring Loft Brown leather appointments with suede accents, 20-inch polished wheels, High Country badging, D-Optic headlamps, standard twin-clutch AWD and power-fold third row seats.

“The all-new Traverse blends Chevrolet’s characteristic SUV cues with capability and refinement,” said John Cafaro, executive director, Global Chevrolet Design. “Inside and out, it offers style with a purpose.”

With available seating for up to eight and a longer wheelbase than the prior model, the Traverse has few peers when it comes to capacity and roominess. In fact, the new Traverse offer best-in-class passenger volume as well as max cargo room, while greater storage options and larger bins throughout the ergonomically optimized cabin are designed to enhance convenience and versatility.

We found that loading the Traverse is a breeze with a new Chevrolet bowtie logo lamp feature illuminating the ground to show where drivers need to place a foot to activate the available hands-free power liftgate. This is super cool.

A new 3.6L V-6 and nine-speed automatic transmission (tested) form the standard propulsion system, expected to offer nearly 10 percent more horsepower than the current model and a GM-estimated 25 mpg highway (FWD). The combination also supports an estimated 5,000-pound trailering capacity when properly equipped.

Sporting the new RS trim, the Traverse will exclusively feature a 2.0L turbocharged engine that provides a unique driving experience, with more maximum torque than the V-6. It is also paired with the nine-speed automatic transmission.

Both engines feature new intelligent stop/start technology that determines the best times for fuel-saving engine-stop events, based on a variety of driving factors. New Traction Mode Select is standard on all models and allows the driver to make real-time adjustments to the vehicle’s driving mode to account for varying road conditions.

Overall, this test drive revealed a strong contender in the mid-size SUV segment, and there is clear distinction between this and the Equinox and the Tahoe.
